The bistro has reopened recently after having supposedly been refurbished! No signs of refurbishment only reduced stock in the delicatessen and toilets still backing up. We sat and had a cup of tea (literally) such a small cup it was similar to childs cup in its lack of capacity, a tea bag in the cup which after removing tea bag left half a cup although there was a small refill jug of hot water it was a messy process putting tea on the saucer and topping up what was left of the tea. The wall light next to the table was literally hanging off the wall exposing the wiring and fixings. Unfair charge for such a basic beverage so we will be going back to the Bell Hotel instead.

When in Sandwich…. Yes, we totally went there to experience the home of the humble bread and filling. So this café is not exactly the very place where the sandwich was invented, but the staff were lovely and we’re happy to share a story about its origins. The sandwiches we had - the Earl of Sandwich roast beef, the cheese and ale chutney and the tuna mayo - were all lovely and fresh with generous amounts of ingredients.

As a family of 5 we staggered into this delightful cafe on a boiling hot day in August 2020 and were hugely impressed with the service and freshly cooked food. Everything was fresh and hot and despite the fact that they were understaffed when we went in (and it was the end of the Government eat out to help out scheme) they were incredibly friendly and professional despite some very rude other customers. Good old fashioned food and great value for money. If I lived nearer then I would definitely be a regular customer!

Found this cafe. Popped in because it was quiet and there was a vegan option on the menu. There was no non dairy milk available; fair enough. I ordered the vegan burger. Told ten minutes later no vegan cheese, would I like ordinary cheddar (no). Ok, told it will come with vegan mayo. Another ten minutes of waiting told mayo had curdled. I said we will go to the cafe two doors down as I didn’t fancy a dry burger. Requested a refund (no alternatives having been offered). The chef (owner?) came striding out of the kitchen to berate me, in front of other customers, for not wanting her dry offerings. She was actually shouting and swearing. A truly dreadful experience.

Visited the cafe a few days ago and was utterly dismayed that dogs are permitted to enter the indoor cafe. On this occasion a couple with a large lurcher type dog did not control it, albeit that it was on a lead. While they were ordering at the counter it went to an adjacent table and inflicted its presence on those diners. It then came across and placed it nose. literally, on ours - bearing in mind its snout was level with the table. The owners were completely unconcerned about this but did endeavour to pull to one side when requested. I have no wish to share my mealtimes with someone's dog no matter how much they think it is OK to share its presence with all comers. Utterly disgusted and we will not be revisiting while dogs are permitted in the general eating areas. If you want to permit dogs, their presence should be restricted to a separate dining area.
