Just We have had the worst restaurant meal this lunchtime for many years at No.4 Abbeygate. A new Chef is most definitely needed and much needed staff training is also necessary too. Lovely polite youngsters working there however they are not well trained. If you order two courses they should immediately bring another knife and fork or soup spoon however this did not happen so sitting there with my soup for several minutes waiting for a spoon. Still no further cutlery for main course so I am sitting there with just a fork and my husband no cutlery when main course arrived. Then we had to wait again for them to go and get cutlery. No offer of any horseradish with the roast beef meals so I had to call a waiter back and ask for it. Now to our main gripe the actual food! (Photo attached of the plates sent back at end of the main course.) My husband had a nondescript pate to start with although toasted bread was lovely, I had the leek and potato soup that closely resembled thick wall paper paste and had no flavour it dropped off the spoon in globules gross. Again the bread was good so dipped it but had to leave most of the soup as horrid. We both had the roast beef main course and most of the meal was burnt as you can see in the photo. The beef was so tough we could not eat it, the roast potatoes were like rubber they seemed to have been recooked several times I actually cannot even imagine how they managed to get them so bad no potato just this thick rubbery skin with nothing inside it đ¤˘, the cauliflower cheese looked ok but when you touched it, it disintegrated it was like mush, the roasted carrots were burned, the other boiled/steamed vegetables were terribly over cooked and the Yorkshire puddings were over cooked/burnt and they were just like crisps on a positive note the parsnips were ok. We have eaten at No 4 several times over the last few years and never previously had any complaints so goodness knows why they have gone downhill like this. It was all so bad we ended up laughing it was the real talking point of the day. We did tell them how bad it was when they removed the plates and the young waiter came back and said the manager had knocked the drinks off the bill. My husband said he could think of better ways to spend ÂŁ47 (without drinks) which considering what we actually ate is so very true.

I stay away in Hotels regularly, first time in Bury St Edmunds. Ordered a delivery, the Lamb Dansak was so tasty, right amount of spice, the Best Iâve had in years. The food was delivered on time and was hot and remained so as I enjoyed eating it.

Went here with my girlfriend tonight. I ordered the âreturn of the macâ which was meant to be macaroni cheese. It turned up and it was quite literally boiled pasta with grated mozzarella on top with dry burnt bacon bits (this was ÂŁ17!), my cheesy chips was melted burger cheese and stale fries. My girlfriend ordered Korean bbq tacos and said it was very sickly. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!

Day trip to Bury St. Edmunds and called here for lunch. Great menu choices and nice environment too. All staff were pleasant, particularly our server who was friendly and helpful. Drinks and food orders taken and served pretty quickly. Great choice for lunch.

Multiple visits, usually very pleased with the dining experience. This time, not so much. Service was fine, the Bone Dry Riesling was excellent, although heavy mark up. I must say the small plates were pretty, well presented but over priced. Tinned anchovies ÂŁ10 for 4, you can buy a whole tin for ÂŁ7. If the description included the term âtinnedâ I wouldnât have ordered them. The biggest disappointment was the Quail, beautifully presented but terrible texture and cold. The waitress did ask me what was the issue with the dish, I told her, but that was the end of that. ÂŁ135 for a selection of cold dishes, apart from the chips which were nuclear. Shame really, wonât be returning anytime soon. Initially a âquirkyâ dining experience however once you become a regular it seems to lose its appeal.
