The best restaurants serving Other european-cuisines food in East of England

In desperate need of WiFi from 11-4 so I could attend a course while on holiday. Had 2 labradors with me. Staff so helpful - opened conservatory for me, and gave me and dogs the space for all that time. Hugely, hugely grateful. Thank you so much for your warm erkcomw and help!

Came with friends as it was recommended. Friends traveled from Chelmsford, us from Sudbury so this was fairly central. 1st hurdle is finding the carpark! Signage is zero! A drink in the bar before seated for dinner. Dining room was fairly empty (3-4 other tables seated) and bright. No music or background noise. We all felt the other tables were listening to our conversation. We’re not noisy, (60-70yr olds) but felt very exposed. Table was laid with cutlery and side plates. No nibbles or bread offered before or while waiting for our order. Scallops were enormous disappointment. About 10 tiny scallops served on a nice sauce. Never have we had tiny (1cm size) scallops in a restaurant, should be serving 2-3 decent sized scallops with roe. These were the tiny ones sold frozen in bags at supermarket. Steak choices, Rump or fillet. No sirloin or ribeye. and boys ordered extra side or spinach to make it a mansize meal. The girls both ordered prawn /seafood pasta. Pasta papadelle was over boiled and stodgy, prawns were tiny (shrimp sized) and minimal. £33 for pasta is extortion. I left 50% of mine as it was inedible. Didn’t have desserts as meal was disappointing enough. Sad as this is marketed as fairly high-end but it isn’t. Beautiful refurb of the building but not a great dining experience.

We arrived at just gone 7pm on a Tuesday evening as strangers, hungry and weary from a 6hr drive from Cornwall. We left just before 9pm not only well fed but feeling as if we'd spent the evening sat with good friends having been treated to the most amazing meal. The food was divine, fresh, cooked to perfection and the setting was wonderfully cosy and personal. Excellent value for money. We were fortunate to find this place once, and we will most certainly return, nothing short of a complete gem. Thank you Dave and Coleen for looking after us so beautifully.

Fui con amigos. La comida es bastante decente. Pero han subido el precio y los tamaños de las porciones son mucho más pequeños, ya sea subiendo el precio y manteniendo el mismo tamaño de porción o manteniendo el mismo precio y dando menos. Dos mesas a nuestro lado también notaron la diferencia y todos decían que no volveríamos aquí de nuevo. También añaden un cargo por servicio, pero esto debería ser opcional. Como dije, la comida es bastante decente, pero tuvimos que pedir más comida después de pedir una parrilla mixta. ¡Y no soy un gilipollas gordo que come mucho!

In short the service was adequate; the food was good quality, but very expensive and inconsistent portion sizes and accompaniments compared to our last visit due to the following issues:- - The waiter gave us 2 sauces instead of the standard 4 which accompanied the meals selection. So we had to ask for the missing sauces. The salad portion was smaller, compared to the last visit. If we hadn’t had visited before we were would have been none the wiser. - On our first visit although the radiators were initially cold, but halfway through our meal they were switched on and the temperature in the restaurant was comfortable. But with respect to this last visit to the restaurant, the radiators were stone cold for the whole duration of the lunchtime meal. We had to resort to wearing our winter coats and yet not one member of staff thought to ask whether the room temperature was warm enough at any point during our lunchtime meal. Our children were too polite to put their coats on, even though they were shivering, despite my husband and I insisting on them putting their coats back on. - We asked for a container to take away the rice, couscous and chicken, because we were too full to finish the meal, and when I checked the container they had put half of the chicken and none of the rice or the couscous in the takeaway box. - They expected us to give them a £15 tip, by making excuses that they had no cash, and then they delayed giving us the change. Despite this situation we gave them an adequate tip even after they eventually returned the change, which was mainly out of pure embarrassment. We were return customers, but after that disappointing experience that was the final and last visit, due to the cold, inconsistent and inhospitable dining experience.

Lovely birthday dinner. The staff are professional, courteous and helpful. All our meals were first class. A good wine selection. Nothing was too much trouble. We were made feel comfortable when we had drinks in the bar after dinner. When we were in the bar in the afternoon the service was excellent.

We booked our wedding 4 months ago at the loft. We were supposed to do a tasting and suggested a date. We called, emailed and even contacted them on social media for 5 weeks and no one got back to us. In the end we had to find another venue for 40 people and 7 weeks to go. We have asked for our deposit back and they are avoiding all communication. Be VERY careful before booking at this venue

Really poor experience. Forgot our food. Then asked the lady food the arrived no apology and given burnt pancakes that I couldn’t eat was then made to pay even though I had said they were bad. Manager didn’t want to speak. Would never go back.

I am surprised to hear the great reviews for superb afternoon tea . Unfortunately it was not the same for us. Went for a Mother's day gift afternoon tea. Standard but would not return. Sandwiches were dry, bacon inside was mostly the fat . Small cakes were not homemade either. Service was perfect, very attentive throughout. Lovely friendly staff. Shame the food was a letdown. We have had much better afternoon teas .

Absolutely fantastic food and great service, the best place to eat by far in Saffron Walden. Highly recommend. Will definitely be visiting again soon.

The Grill room always has a nice atmosphere. My Mum and I find it to be A La Carte but relaxed which is a nice mix. The food is delicious, we’ve never had a bad meal. I had the Potato Gratin with baby parsnips (vedgy option) this time and it was delicious. The Chef very kindly did my Mum a chicken option, as she couldn’t eat the other options and she really enjoyed it. Presentation and portion size is very good. Reasonably priced for the quality. When we stay at the hotel we always eat in the Grill room and if we were more local we’d eat here more often.

Called in today for coffee. My friend bought a coffee with oat milk, which was lacking in coffee taste and tasted like hot milk, I took it back and the response was not what I would expect. A series of unhelpful and unsympathetic waitresses each passed the issue on to someone else and finally the manageress intervened. She claimed my friend complains every time she comes in about the coffee not being hot enough, and referred to an incident well over a year ago (we sent back a £15 salad on the grounds that it consisted of hardly anything at all other than lettuce ). The manageress then stormed upstairs and told my friend that she complained too often, mentioned the salad incident and suggested she never comes back again. How absolutely rude !!! I was left speechless. I have been there with this friend many, many times and she has only made the two complaints, apart from regularly having to ask for extra hot coffee as it's usually lukewarm. I have subsequently discovered on Trip Advisor that many people have reported similar or identical experiences, citing the rude and aggressive attitude of the manager and most of the decidedly unhelpful and indifferent staff. One bad review can be ignored; when it's multiple negative comments there's a sure sign something needs to change. Don’t bother with the place unless you don’t care being served warm coffee and overpriced basic food.

Lovely breakfast so welcoming, definitely worth a visit as Four in a Bed winner. Matt and his team were lovely.

We stayed for 1 night. Understandably the restaurant was closed and strict Covid protocols were in place. However the room looked appealing so we booked. Sadly the facilities were not as we hoped for the price and we felt disappointed. Lots of promise to be a great place with some easy changes.

Visit this shop on a weekly basis with the family for take away - the staff are always so polite and friendly! The food is good value for money and plentiful! Nice to see them remaining open during lockdown whilst following the social distancing!
