Excellent service but below average food for the price. The scallops hadn't been cleaned properly and were gritty, and the steak sandwich was boring - chips undercooked and the onion rings were sickly. Chicken was nice and the staff were very good.

Went for a romantic Saturday night dinner, can't fault the atmosphere and staff here with a decent choice of food from both the bar and a la carte menu. We ordered both starters and mains from the a la carte menu, and the presentation and quality of the food was great. The composition of the plates seemed confused at times, with a traditional mini pork pie in a stock-based gravy served with tangy balsamic glaze and apple compote, there was also a warm game-based starter served with a frozen pea puree which was jarring. Although the quality and skill was evident you didn't get a lot for you money and would recommend 2 sides per person to accompany a main dish if you want to avoid a trip to McDonalds on the way home. £100 for 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 side of chips and 2 non-alcoholic drinks, we didn't order a dessert and instead picked one up on the way home from Waitrose. Didn't seem to compare well to other AA rosette restaurants we have visited.

Initial glance at the menu as a pair of vegetarians wasn't promising in terms of options. However, the Maitre d and especially the waitress (Roxanna) were amazing - attentive, knowledgeable, kind and gracious. This made the food (which was very good) excellent. Restaurant visited many times but alas the standard has not kept up with either the aspirations nor the prices. On three recent visits, my food has been devoid of taste. Dishes which claim to have something spicy just don’t. Horeseradish an example in the beef sandwiches and the burgers. Bland beyond acceptability. Recent example is the KFC style cauliflower. Good concept, poor execution. Very greasy (and kfc may be many things, but rarely this). A pasta dish with crab had a couple of bits of shell for show, but the crab meat conspicuous by its absence. Dish tasted of plain noodles only. Service remains generally good with pleasant and delightful staff. Prices, as everywhere, have increased but seemingly here more than in many other places. Overall, a good place going steadily in the wrong direction.

My husband and I have had some very lovely lunchtime breaks at Bedford lodge over the past years .I took a friend of mine there last week ( July 26 ) we called in for a light lunch but were not greeted warmly and told to ‘sit down’.We awaited a menu but the waitress did not reappear .when she did she asked what we wanted to eat .When we said we were waiting for the menu she looked distinctly disgruntled . When our order came, food wise it was ok .it was just the demeanour of the staff that was disappointing .I couldn’t even raise a smile from the rather dour waiter who took payment at the conclusion of our meal. This was in complete contrast to my previous experience at Bedford Lodge . I shall hope for better service next time.

Service was so bad. They couldn’t wait to get you out of there and was asked the same thing by different waitresses repeatedly. My friend had questions about the food and they couldn’t answer the questions. I ordered a sirloin steak which was lovely apart from 40% of it was gristle. When I told the waitress she bluntly said sorry then asked my what I wanted for desert 😂 Such a shame as the restaurant was beautiful and had a lot of potential for a great night. Will not be going back, wish I went to Montaz instead.

£22 for a roast beef! 2 anaemic potatoes hardly roasted. 1 sliver if a slice of carrot And 1 sliver of a slice of parsnip NO greens offered either on the plate or as a side and the Gravy was so drenched with Thyme it took over the entire flavour if the plate! It was not a pleasant plate of food and dull to look at! I won’t eat here again as it’s not the first time the food has been poor! The only good thing to say was the serving staff for both dinner and breakfast did their best What the point in booking systems that are clearly in chaos. Treated rudely by bar staff who refused to serve us a drink as we were 30 minutes early for our table-told to go wait in reception My mackerel was akin to rubber ,my daughter salmon was Tesco quality and very lonely on its plate with some disgusting green butter tasting sludge smeared next to it My husband choice from the bar menu was ok-clearly pub food is the forte ?? Hadn’t finished our meal when staff were dismantling tables around us to prepare for breakfast Didn’t feel like we could continue to dessert and coffee as we were clearly by now in the way Why book a 2030 table when you want your patrons to have left by 2130? Doke 2 days earlier about having a cake moment for our special birthday-didn’t feel able to even ask despite having the cake with me Breakfast even worse -waited 20mins for a table and then another 35 minutes for food Eggs Royale and Benedict cold served on cheap bap bread not the bread advertised Husband breakfast was meagre No table service once order in and a very sweet table clearer had clocked we were still waiting and enquired for us to then be served with cold food Coffee cold , toast -one slice of white and brown even though there were 3 of us I could go on but clearly it’s mute as it’s seems this establishment and the hotel are struggling to meet expectations Sadly the staff are not at fault and clearly deserved to work somewhere better than this very poor excuse of a hotel Lives on reputation of a past era or simply assumes it’s clientele are worth the effort

I am sending this email to advise you of what happened when we visited you last Sunday, as I have not heard anything from the hotel. We arrived at 12:15, my family sat down at a table outside and I walked into the restaurant to be greeted by a young lady. I told her my name and that my booking was for 12:30. She took me through to the bar. I took the drinks menu to my family on table 203 and then I went back to the bar and ordered some drinks, I brought my lager back with me and left the cocktails order with them, they were brought out at 12:45 ish.No one come to take our order for dinner, I then flagged over a young lad and explained our table was booked for 12:30 and we want to order. He went off and no one ever came.Tables were filing up and then more staff turned up to work the tables and we flagged another lady down and explained again to her that we had not ordered. So the order was finally placed after 13:00. The lady didn’t have a clue regarding the menu as we asked for one of the scallop starters to come with no animal products as my daughter is a vegetarian.Starters came out pretty quickly must have been 13:20 ish, there was confusion of which one had the meat removed, and one didn’t have the green sauce…. Anyhow we said don’t worry.. Then we order a second round of drinks and they are delivered by a young lad. Starter dishes left on the table until 14:00!I then walk off round the garden with my daughter hoping when I return the mains arrive, but no. My wife who is upset at this point goes into the bar and explains how we have been treated, and gives the staff the dinner voucher. She then explains we are going because we have waited an hour and half and the meal was a treat from my work because I worked all through lockdowns and it’s been so disappointing. She goes to pay for the drinks and the staff say keep the voucher and don’t worry about the drinks. She then walks off, very upset. No contact was made to sort this out.I want a refund on this voucher. Please contact me regarding this.

Very limited menu and rather expensive for the quality of food, which was average/poor. The duck main had unrendered fat and soggy skin (not really acceptable when you’re paying £30) , the salmon main was dry and salty (£25). The sticky toffee pudding was only just luke warm. Booked for Sunday luch as we thought it would be a nice end to the morning going round racing yards yesterday. We have eaten many times here but yesterday was very poor in comparison to other times The lunch menu is very restricted so i asked for the bar menu but was told that wouldnt be possible . I asked a second time - having seen some verygood looking burgers coming out of the kitchen. I thought one of these would be very nice The menu i received at the second time of asking didnt have these on it so there must have been another menu I opted for a stater as a main course- usually if I do this the portion comes out a bit bigger than starter size, but this was not the case. 1 tiny piece of burnt toast was not enough for the size of the chicken liver parfait. On a table next to us whole slices of roast beef were left -I suspect because it looked so rare it looked raw. The lamb that one of had was sliced so thinly it was almost transparent Come On Bedford Lodge bring your standards upto what they have always been

Had a splendid lunch over a week ago. However was very concerned.1) Eventhough none of the servers nor the chef had face masks on, they were still not social distancing, and stood very very close and too near at our table for a few minutes sometimes. I felt very uncomfortable. 2)Secondly visitor tracking at the restaurant entry was non-existant. Yes they appeared too busy as it was a sunny Saturday, but i) there was no tracking and trace request at the receptionii) My reservation was not really prepared. (I had booked the day before) and staff were rushing around. Where was the maitre d'?Contrary to a famous hotel in Cambridge I had dined the week before they were very Covid-attentive and respectful, the servers had their face coverings, yet also kept their distance.I shan't be dining at the Bedford until all precautions are practised. Correct me if needed. We have accepted and thus adapted that this is now a new way of life for my family and me, living with Covid, for at least another 1-2 years. I hope restaurants will practice the same.

We ate here one evening in August soon after they re-opened after lockdown. It was a lovely warm summer evening and the only veggie starter on offer was hot soup! There was also just one main dish available and that was mac 'n' cheese. Very average, uninspiring dishes and so disappointing that there was just the one 'take it or leave it' option. Other than that, the burgers, the club sandwich, the fries, onion rings, the onion appetizer, the tuna melt, the steaks, seafood dishes and the rest of the menu is wonderful! I have tried a good majority of the food here and it's well deserved as the ice-cream, sorbet, and other desserts are awesome! Staying overnight at Bedford Lodge we booked an evening meal as part of a package. How could we deny ourselves with the terms like "award-winning" to describe the food set in a restaurant with "artistic décor making for a charismatic ambience". However, our experience of the Squire's Restaurant did not live up to expectations. Sat on plain table next to a bar, I would suggest it takes more than a lick of dark paint to make a restaurant 'charismatic'. Waiters dressed as though it's high end dining and the wine list is impressive, but the restaurant function seems to have a split personality: A La Carte menu diners juxtaposed with a bar serving burgers with lots of chips and onion rings. Certainly 'unique'. We ordered for starters the sea spinach veloute and rabbit/ guinea fowl ballotine. First was interesting, however the ballotine was way over salty, almost inedible. For mains: Denham Venison and the Rock Pool Risotto. Venison was tough with grissle and the risotto had a rather 'robust' consitancy. Seafood was not properly prepared, mussels not cleaned properly (white worm on the shells) and broken clam shells in the risotto. There was a whole langostine on top but no way to eat this, where to put the shells and how to clean your hands after opening the langustine? Had to ask the fancy dressed waiters to sort this out. Pudding was a similar experience, with a small ramekin dish wearing a large puff pastry ' Edwardian like hat' again impossible to eat without making a mess. Menu recommend a Malbec wine with this pudding, I knew this was nonsense, but went for it anyway. Why not, as this was in keeping with the rather surreal dining experience. Of course the wine didn't go at all. We paid £162 for this pantomime. I can only assume the award winning chef had the evening off and left someone else in charge. Will not be returning unless it's for the chips and onion rings from the bar menu.

Had lunch at the hotel before staying overnight - menu uninspiring, nothing exciting - a la carte and bar menu given and as another review mentioned it seems they don't really know what they want to serve. However, it would probably be best to get a good chef. My partners T Bone was small and came with soggy chips and some dressed rocket, he asked for medium rare and got rare/blue and in the absence of a steak knife was quite hard to tackle. My burger with a soggy brioche, no better than a supermarket burger 1cm thick, slice of avocado, one onion ring, overcooked egg and same soggy chips, plus two drinks came to £78. The problem is there is no competition in Newmarket but in future we will stop off for lunch at one of the many excellent pub/restaurants on the way when we go racing. We can have a superb lunch at the Michelin starred Hambleton Hall near us for around the same price. Service was average. Restaurant manager asked if food was OK and I told him it was quite poorly cooked and overpriced and he just said that was not his problem.

We had a two night stay at the hotel and booked in to the restaurant for the first evening . At first glance the menu looks promising , £39 for a main course so we were expecting top quality food and really looking forward to our meal . Our table was booked for 8 pm , we ordered two courses in the bar and were taken through to the restaurant at 2050 , there were several free tables in the restaurant but we were seated directly next to ( on the same table ) as another couple !!! , I can understand that at Wagamama but this is supposed to be a fine dining restaurant ; we received grumpy looks from the waiting staff when we asked for our own table . Eventually our drinks order was taken at 2105 and food arrived at 2115 !!! , we ordered the mushroom mousse and cheese soufflé , the starters arrived and one was wrong so we waited again for the correct order . My husbands cheese soufflé was curdled and resembled tasteless scrambled egg ( at a guess it had been in the microwave ) Eventually at 2145 the correct starter arrived , I ordered mushroom mousse but what I received was grey frozen tasteless gunk , seriously disgusting . We were so hungry at this point that we decided to leave the restaurant and order a Thai takeaway , which we eventually ate at 2245 !! . I summary the restaurant is confused serving burger and chips and fish and chips alongside supposed ‘fine dining food ‘with a hefty price tag .The staff are polite and pleasant but slooooooow and lack assertiveness .The food was the worst I have EVER eaten , inedible and tasteless . We did speak to the restaurant manager the following morning and reiterated our experience and urged him to try the food we ordered which he said he would do . I have never been compelled to write a review but felt I had to warn others .

I come to this restaurant a lot in the past but it was my first time back for two years. The restaurant looks great the bar staff where very good, but the food was very poor. It looked good but with no flavour both me and my girlfriend where both very disappointed with every one of three courses. When your spending £39 on a main I expect a lot better. I think they really need to up there game as there is a lot better food in the villages around Newmarket.

Visited Squires today (Friday 22nd) for a birthday meal and have left feeling incredibly disappointed. The service can usually be quite hit an miss but today was just another level and has forced me to write this review. From the moment we arrived we were kept waiting for over 5 minutes by the restaurant manager (or I assume that’s what he was) there was no apology for the wait. We were seated and had to ask to be given a wine list. We ordered a bottle of champagne which arrived promptly and ordered the food. We received some complementary bread which tasted nice. We continually had to top up our own champagne as the manager or other members of staff just seem to stare at an empty glass and ignored it. When you’re spending nearly £100 on a bottle you don’t expect to have to do it yourself. The food itself was nice but the lack of any type of service ruined the evening. The manager seemed to be away with the fairies the majority of the time and not a clue what he was doing. When I refused to pay the service charge the manager came over and asked why, I explained why and all I got was, is that it... It’s a massive shame as the food is lovely, but let down by the management and service.

We have eaten at the Bedford Lodge for over 50 years at the various guises their restaurant has taken. Some experiences were excellent and others indifferent. However what we have now is an outrageously overpriced and poorly prepared and presented cuisine. To have starters and mains at circa £10 and £40 one expects and should receive high quality. Our meal was produced with inferior products, in our case wild mushrooms, scallops, beef cheek and turbot all of which you could buy better from Bury St Edmunds market ! Thus either the chef or the manager is responsible and need to change their supplier. The wine list whilst interesting is again overpriced and is obviously aimed at visiting "punters" from the city who might wish to throw their winnings away to impress their guests. The only bright spot of the evening was the staff. They are eager to please and were knowledgeable . Sadly they are being pushed into serving their guests poor food. Unfortunately as we had guests the evening we visited we did not complain so as not to cause them pain. We are really struggling with the positive reviews we have read. Obviously tastes differ widely.

We stayed at Bedford Lodge for 2 nights in July, the Lodge and staff are wonderful, however, the restaurant was a total disappointment for me, the first night I had Truffle Ravioli followed by Moues-Frites these were so bad I would not be surprised if they were bought in as cheap as possible, the second night we had Mature Cheddar Cheese Glazed Nachos to share these were OK, as a main I had Forest Mushroom Mac and Cheese, the forest mushrooms were two tiny mushrooms, one whole and one chopped into 4/5 pieces the mac and cheese was awful, to be fair my partner said her meals were very nice, I would stay at Bedford Lodge again but no way would I eat in the restaurant and finally, breakfast, poached eggs cooked with vinegar so all that I could smell was vinegar

We were very upset when our meals arrived as they did. My husband requested a rare burger with crispy chips. It was brought out as tough as shoe leather with chips that literally dripped grease. My caesar salad was meant to have a poached egg, but it came out solid egg. We sent the food back (our server was lovely about it). When it was returned, the situation was worse (if that was even possible). At the price paid here, this should have been perfection, yet the chef could not manage after 2 tries to get it right. Having wasted an hour waiting for meals, we spoke with the manager and left. No point after that. A terrible shame for such a place.

I am mortified that this review won't be what I hoped for. I love this restaurant and the Bedford lodge so much that I have choose to get married here. Every time i want to impress someone or treat my family or friends i take them to the Squire at the Bedford lodge. But, when i went in last week to treat some special friends i was mortified by the outcome of the dinner. The food from the restaurant menu was incredibly overpriced and undersized..... the cooking and presentation of the dinner was overall poor. We order 3 blue stake and we received them just pink....unacceptable in my eyes if you pay the London price of £40 a stake!!!!!!!!! We ordered two lamb-dish and the ordered was mixed up. No signs from the staff to sort the issue..... My friend who ordered from the bistro's menu was definitely in for a treat though. Don't even get me started on the desert.

We were greatly looking forward to lunch here, having lived in the area sometime and never quite managing to go. I reserved a table for 12.30 and a pleasant young man showed us in to the restaurant at 12.25, only to then tell us it wasn't yet open - so we took a seat in the bar. A young lady approached to take our order, but we explained we were eating in the restaurant, not bar - so she said she would let them know we were here. Soon we were shown to a table - the table was almost lower than the chairs, the second choice was stuck in a dark and isolated corner - finally a lovely table in the heart of the place - during our whole lunch, Squires was less than half full, so why offer us the worst tables first? Curious!

We dine out regularly from family owned restaurants to brassieres and fine dining and our taste in food is eclectic. The a la carte menu looked interesting but the expectation was not executed in flavours and service. One of the 4 starters was cold so had to go back and as a consequence the main course was served immediately after clearing our starter plates. The mains were tepid as I suspect they had been sitting on the pass because of the delayed first course. We did complain to the maitre d and we were offered complimentary dessert.

This is a 2 AA rosette restaurant but not all the food gets close to that standard. Some is good and some is poor. They serve sausages and mash at about £12.50 but I've had it a couple of times and it hasn't really been hot enough and there's nothing about it to suggest the sausages have just been cooked - it all just appears to have been precooked and reheated and I could do better than that in a pub. The restaurant decor is stylish. The service tries to be good but many of the waiters are foreign with poor English and appear not to be experienced or well- trained. It can be good here but it's a bit of a lottery. It could be great but it's not.

Breakfast at Squires is one good reason to stay at the Bedford Lodge with a breakfast-included rate. For outside paying customers I suspect it's expensive, as it should be. Start with a perfect continental breakfast buffet, including salmon, a very nice fruit cup, juices, buns, etc. Then order from a tantalizing variety of breakfast options including three variations on eggs Benedict (my favorite was made with salmon), haddock, kippers, all sorts of eggs, the full English breakfast (of course) and delicious Newmarket sausage. There were some server issues (related to inadequate training I think) at a couple of our four or five breakfasts there this year, but a few weeks later I can't remember what they were - the memory of all that excellent breakfast fare dominates in the memory.

We were surprised to find the Squires restaurant, pub and most outside seating taken on the bank holiday Sunday evening- but whilst the restaurant was technically full the manager did find a space for us.We had a choice of ordering from an a-la-carte menu, a fixed price menu and the Sunday lunchtime menu (which was still available in the evening). We opted for the fixed price menu. So often when you order from a fixed-price menu the food is second rate to the a-la-carte, but not here. The food was excellent. The amuse bouche was fantastic and so were my three courses (lobster wantons, duo of lamb and de-constructed sherry trifle) – the standards were that of fine dining (albeit the main course came with a sensible amount of potatoes and vegetables).Wine selection was good, but a bit expensive. The following morning we had one of the best hotel breakfasts we had eaten in a while (better than the last five star hotel we stayed in).

I can't even tell you how disappointing this meal was, we walked in and I was under the assumption they were fully booked with the chaotic approach to finding a table... the restaurant was empty and the whole time we were there, there was only us and another table of four, the service was ridiculously slow, we waited on drinks throughout the meal, the Italian server "forgot" and we just kept having to attempt eye contact for a drink, we ordered 3 x fish and chips and one Caesar salad the salad arrived with the root/ core of the lettuce in the bowl, it was brown and just off putting, there was a poached egg on top of the salad which is unheard of with a Caesar salad and not mentioned on the menu but my meal was nowhere near as bad as the fish and chips my Mother ordered, she couldn't break the burnt overcooked batter when she finally did by hitting it against the table there was barely any fish inside, this is the second time this has happened in the same restaurant, she sent the meal back, when we finished our meal my Mums had still not arrived again when we reminded the waitress she had "forgot" and ran to the kitchen to get it, the second meal came out, the peas had a crusty too to it because it had been sat there waiting, there was no rush or urgency at this point she was too hungry to make a further complaint, the bill came and there was no apologies for the disgraceful service we had received, we flagged this to the Manager who took the cost of the fish and chips off the bill and gave a further 20% reduction, £85 for three fish and chips, a salad, a side of fries and two rounds of drinks consisting of 2 shandys, 2 peronis, a water and a Diet Coke?? I will never go back to this restaurant, by far one of the worst meals I have ever had, over priced, horrendous poor customer service and the cook needs sacking!

Visited here last night with my mother for dinner. Lovely outside seating area although could do with a few more tables as it gets quite busy in the sun and we almost didn't eat as we wanted to sit outside and had to wait a while! Glass of wine extremely over priced - £7.50 for a small glass of rose! Nice size bread selection to start and the caeser salad for main was nice although not very 'caesery'. My mother thoroughly enjoyed her crab salad. Would definitely visit again but try something else on the menu.

After receiving a voucher towards a meal as a Christmas gift we decided to visit Squires restaurant as a couple for a special treat. On arrival we were had a drink at the bar before being greeted by a member of staff who showed us to our table. In the restaurant it's actually quite dark and the tables are unnervingly close together, I know that you can sometimes overhear other people's conversations, but it was like they were at the same table! The waiting staff were efficient and brought out the various menus to choose from.It almost seems a shame in a "fine dining" restaurant to be sat very close to someone else eating pub-like fish and chips. The food was nice, overpriced, but nice, however no sooner had we finished our starters than our mains appeared, without even chance for a quick sip of overpriced wine to wash down the starters. We never had a desert although looking next door, you didn't get a great deal for your money, so I'm rather glad we didn't.We ended with coffee and some chocolates back in the bar and sadly that was probably the highlight of the evening. Those who provided our voucher had hoped that we'd enjoy a nice meal for two, but having to add more than £50 to cover the rest of the bill they were rather surprisedOverall if you like overpriced uninspiring portions of food, go for it, but for a 2 rosette restaurant I have to say I've eaten at better pubs.Sadly I don't think we'll be returning for a treat for two any time soon :(

We were looking forward to eating at this restaurant as we were staying in the Bedford lodge hotel and last time we ate here it was a lovely experience. This time we were 'greeted' by a rather snooty head waiter who sat us next to the door on a low table in 2 armchairs?! We were going to have a formal 3 course meal and we felt like we were in a pub. When we asked to move to a table with normal restaurant style chairs we were told no. After some fuss as my husband has a bad back we were moved to a table which was virtually identical but the chairs were slightly higher armchairs. The food was nice if a little over priced and the waiters kept trying to take my plate before I'd finished eating. As we were so uncomfortable we only had a main and then left. Not the romantic meal we'd hoped for!
