The Grill room always has a nice atmosphere. My Mum and I find it to be A La Carte but relaxed which is a nice mix. The food is delicious, we’ve never had a bad meal. I had the Potato Gratin with baby parsnips (vedgy option) this time and it was delicious. The Chef very kindly did my Mum a chicken option, as she couldn’t eat the other options and she really enjoyed it. Presentation and portion size is very good. Reasonably priced for the quality. When we stay at the hotel we always eat in the Grill room and if we were more local we’d eat here more often.

We had dinner in the Grill Room - the food is expensive but it was delicious. I had the sea bass and my boyfriend had pork tenderloin. Our only disappointment was that lots of items on the menu contained nuts and some could not be made without.

We ate here on 2 evenings & had breakfast once. Both evening meals were very nice, although as others have said the menu isn't large. I am a fussy eater but I still was able to have different food each night. I did send my duck back as it was a little too pink for my liking, but they were most happy to oblige. The puddings both nights were exceptional - very yummy! The staff were great too - especially Kirsty & Miklosh. The wine list is good, it is a nice space & well furnished, although a little too open to the corridor for me - we stayed on the far side of the room for a little more privacy. Cost wise - not cheap - but good food - it is a hotel. We also had drinks on the terrace - an Aperol Spritz was £12 - rather costly I feel, but the Gin list is pretty special!

We enjoyed a nice meal in the grill room as part of our stay at Down Hall and had a great experience! The staff were excellent at accommodating our wishes and were very polite and courteous. However there was limited choice for vegetarians and the menu was quite pricey for the portions you actually receive - so would recommend you look for a deal as we did which got us 30 pounds each to spend on the food as that reduces the cost significantly!

I had the octopus to start and almost couldn’t believe the size of the portion - three 1cm pieces of tentacle lost on the plate. The culinary equivalent of homeopathy. This was followed by a piece of turbot that must have been prepared by a miser. Lovely flavours but nouvelle cuisine fell out of favour in the late 80’s for a reason.

We had Sunday lunch at Down Hall and I was expecting great things to come but felt very let down by everything. Our first impression on arrival was a grand building but a very small entrance with reception in a corner which was hardly noticeable. No one greeted us so we followed the signage to the Grille Room only to be met by a grumpy man who showed us to our table. I had to ask for a dustpan and brush to be brought as there was so many crumbs on the floor, the grumpy man said someone had just left and had made a mess but he moved us rather than clear it up. The dining room was again small compared to the size of the building and had a few table taken but there was no atmosphere. We order drinks and our lunch which I though was good value at £25 for 3 courses however the beef looked lovely but was tough and stringy, starters and desserts though were ok. During our visit I found the staff not very attentive they just did what they had to and disappeared through the kitchen door. No once while we were there did anyone clear the mess up on the floor by the original table we were offered ! Would we go back ?? No I don’t think so

We approached the magnificent Down Hall via their access road, wow what a sight. We were here for a look around , possible wedding venue for my son. The restaurant was a modern style in a building with an antique magnificence. The choices we made were very tasty and hot, always a bonus, the menu wasn't too big a modest choice. There was the typical 'roast' (beef), always a good choice, on the menu the beef was cooked perfectly. The 1 course, 2 course, 3 course options made it easy for those on a budget to make their money go further ( a wedding to pay for). The restaurant is well worth a visit. K:))

Not many other options in the local area for dining so this place is ideal for those staying at the hotel so that way guests can experience everything on site. Reasonably priced menu, opted for appetizers, mains and dessert. Could do with more vegetarian/fish options as these are limited but the options available were tasty. Quick and attentive service, friendly staff nice atmosphere.

We visited as a 4 for a meal for a special occasion and were not disappointed. We felt the food was carefully and appetisingly presented, full of flavour but with each distinct element holding its own, and very reasonable pricing for the quality and service to which we were treated. Even the sourdough bread with butter/crème fraiche mix for the table was a very enjoyable step up from the standard rolls and butter. The menu selection was sufficient, including choice for a vegetarian in our group, but the fussier of eaters may not find something they like, but all of our group thoroughly enjoyed all of their choices, including the cheese board with a generous serving of 5 different cheeses (of your own choice from a selection of 8 or 9). The wine was a particularly palatable Pinot Grigio which was priced at a generally expected level, and even the bottled table water appeared to be included. We all certainly enjoyed our evening and would without doubt visit again based on the quality of the experience and the notably reasonable pricing (just over £40 per head for 4 people having 3 courses and a bottle of wine between us)

We thought the food was very good. I really liked the foie gras and duck terrine with freshly baked mini loaf of brioche. The mini brioche was a little dry but so adorable. My partner had the pollock for main which was nice and came with samphire and crushed potatoes. I had the pork belly which was delicious. We thought the desserts were decent and clearly did take a lot of effort. Overall a good meal, and great service. Its £34.50 per person for a three course dinner, plus supplement charges if you go for more expensive dishes. Bottle of water is £4 for a medium sized to share. The prices are pretty much the same as London. The decor of the restaurant is traditional and well maintained, although I didn't like the synthetic hydrangeas. Good ambience and quiet.

We have lived in the area for a few years but this was our first visit to Down Hall and unfortunately won't be returning.First impressions were great it's an impressive drive up to the house and a lovely looking building. The bar was rammed obviously there was an event on, so as we were only a few minutes early we went straight to the grill room. The title "room" however is somewhat misleading, let's call it a "space" separated by some rather dated etched glass panels (reminiscent of a cheap Italian restaurant) from effectively a corridor, which runs between the bar and the function rooms, or the bar and reception. It felt like I was sat in a food court of a railway station given the amount of foot traffic going past our table, great if you want to people watch but not exactly conducive to a romantic dinner. The extremely bright and clinical lighting also kills any degree of ambience, which might be created by some of the lovely building features (why bother with crystal wall sconces if your going to install a million and one spot lights ??)Now to the service, we ordered drinks at the bar before deciding to go straight to our table, my starter arrived before our drinks, my plate was taken whilst I was still chewing my starter and my main, arrived ten minutes later! The dessert menu was thrust at us immediately, at which point we had to ask for some time, over the next 20 mins we were asked again 4 times if we had decided on dessert. Now there's attentive and then there's down right annoying, when we asked why service was so rushed, the waiter told us the staff wanted to go home by 11, so they wanted the tables cleared as soon as they could!Despite the speed of delivery the food was good, my main (the pork belly,)was lovely though the charred cabbage and heritage carrots were the star of the plate. However when you are spending @£200 on a meal and drinks I am looking for a bit more than just good food, I'm looking for a pleasant experience and surroundings and this place didn't deliver.

Me and my Wife booked a Table for Valentines Day and it was also our Wedding Anniversary .We had the 4 course valentines set menu .We booked the table for 6.30pm and were seated in the middle of the Restaurant which I found a bit awkward as it felt like everyone is eyeing on you .They had approx 5-6 tables at that time which I would consider as not very busy, especially seeing how many staff they had.First Waitress asked if we wanted Water, so I said Ok.I just thought she meant Table/free/tap water as usually restaurant staff would ask if they could take my Drink Order .She gave us a bottle of water and did not offer us a Wine List.Strange I thought. Every other table was offered a wine list .When I asked for Wine she was surprised and I was already a little annoyed.Maybe because we were not dressed posh enough to be drinking wine. The food we ordered was cooked to perfection and we couldn't fault it. From start to mains to dessert it was all perfectly executed .The quantity of each plate of food is also well balanced of flavour and portion control is also to perfection. I would like to say a big thanks to the Kitchen team that night ! You guys deserve a 10/10 from me ! We had salmon for starter, followed by a small prosecco ice cream, then Chicken for mains and Chocolate cake for dessert.Having said that, not Once did any staff member ask if our food was ok or if we wanted anything else etc. This is something that I am most disappointed about from this kind of restaurant, even nandos staff have a policy where staffs are meant to check if customers are satisfied with the food etc. They just literally gave us the food and collected the plates after each course and simply didn't really care about us.This was really not great customer service. However, when I look around all other tables, the staff members or managers/supervisor would spend few minutes socialicing with other customers or at least asking how their food was and if they wanted anything else. This was a big disappointing as this could have made our wedding anniversary almost a perfect night , my Wife also noticed that staff members did not seem to show much appreciation of our custom although we have spent almost £100 there.I still respectfully left a small tip although they tried to charge me for a Whole Bottle of wine when we only ordered a Glass. The Hotel was very nicely decorated and this will be my 3rd visit, but restaurant service needs a bit more improvement. It would be nice if they treated everyone the same. Maybe because we were non-White and staff thought we were simply tourist and might not come back again so they did not bother with us. But in fact I lived Local and have almost really loved this place inside and out.It was really a shame that our night was spoilt by poor service . My rating:Restaurant service team service 0/10food quality 8/10Food price 8/10Hotel decor 9/10Cleanliness 9/10Reception Service Team 10/10

We ate from the Table d'Hote Menu which was very good and part of a package. The food was good and well presented. We, also, ate breakfast here on two mornings and, although the full breakfast was good, the fruit starters did not have any flavour at all, merely, tasted of water. They need to buy better quality ingredients instead of being satisfied with inferior products bought, perhaps, from a supermarket.I appreciate, also, that this is a 4-star hotel/restaurant with a five-star rating for food hygiene BUT the wine list IS expensive for what you get. For example, a Chilean Red for GBP 21 per bottle - the cheapest on the list. This will be a 700% markup, I think. The major downfall for this restaurant as, indeed, the rest of the hotel is the lack of training of the staff who, although friendly, should pay more attention to detail. The Hospitality Inspector

Main was Jacobs ladder which is slow cooked rib of beef. The meat was succulent and melted in the mouth and was beautifully complemented by the smokey mash and spring greens. Desert was the cheese board with some excellent cheeses, lovely crackers and the most amazing chutney, no blue cheese which is unusual but that's ok I give that to my wife. It was supposed to be a special Christmas Day lunch after staying Christmas Eve - It couldn’t have been more of a disappointment! Firstly the wait for dinner was unacceptable (3 hrs) and then the food that was served was disgusting, still had the plastic around the stuffing (it looked like dried up rubber, YUK) couldn't eat it, nowhere near 5 star quality, which it should have been. My mum suffered severe food poisoning after eating the breakfast (which also looked vile). I complained at the time and received a refund for the dinner; however, I expected reasonable compensation for completely ruining Christmas 2013 for the family, as we needn’t have even stayed overnight. I had the steak fillet, lovely bit of tender meat but a little over medium rare, my wife had the sea bass which was good and presented well but missing the gnocchi but that was quickly resolved by the waitress. Starters and desserts were both good. Wine by bottle at the table was good and priced reasonably. We visited this venue recently for a drink in the bar with a view to looking at it as a potential wedding reception venue. Based on our experience we are unlikely to look at it any further. We had to clear empty glasses from a table in the bar ourselves before sitting down with our drinks - bar staff seemed unsupervised and not overly attentive. The hotel looks a little tired in places despite being such an impressive venue from the outside. Disappointed.

Pricing wrong with over half the menu subject to supplements. The staff are inexperienced, with a good restaurant manager training them on the job.Periods of inattentiveness - prompting the manager to tell staff what to do

My partners chicken risotto was stunning, really tasty. My main of sea bass, cockles, razor clams and pesto pasta was lovely, though a bit dry. Deserts were stunning. Ask for tap water, and be prepared to wait between courses. It was nice food but we wouldn't come back - the prices mean it's a once in a while thing for us, as well as the fact that we have good food and much more fun in your usual chain restaurant and time to do stuff afterwards, instead of going straight to bed as the service took so long!

We loved the Grill Room and the yummy food.Well done Chef and all the staff !!!! The maître d' was excellent, very friendly and attentive. The breakfasts were fresh and wholesome. It was a shame that the leisure facilities were not open after events of a few weeks ago. We were offered the chance to use the leisure facilities at the nearby Hunters Meet Hotel.

I hosted a party of 8 guests for dinner and the food was of reasonable standard and the service satisfactory. I can't say it strayed beyond a three star rating because whilst there was nothing to complain about the prices are a bit steep for what you get - especially at the bar beforehand.

The food was fantastic. The only reason I would say this was not 5* was because of the price, £30 for 3 courses was a bit steep.

Restaurant was dirty, food was made of cheap ingredients, was over cooked, dry mush. There was dried food on the table base, the menu was boring, and extremely expensive considering you had to pay supplements for items. Also had breakfast here which was conjealed and cold. Clearly the chefs need to be re trained

The food was very average and i was very sick that evening, it had to be either the food or the water. For starter i had pate which was ok but it was a large piece with only a small piece of toast, main course tuna was over cooked and not how described hardly any sweet and sour sauce, the pasta was very overcooked and so hard i couldn't cut with a knife, dessert was nice brownie. My husbands food was better he quite Liked the goats cheese, beef average but dessert sticky toffee pudding was nice. Staff were friendly and pleasant.

Would have liked a change of menu on the second day,as there were only a few thing to choose from. a lady we spoke to was on her third night and said she was dissapointed that the choice was not as good as it had been when she had stayed before.

We had a lovely evening meal here. Three courses for £30 a head and wine was included as part of our hotel deal. Service was quick and food delicious. The restaurant is well presented, although is very bright. Not really for a romantic meal for two. Children and large groups made the restaurant noisy and lively, but not in a bad way. If we had been there with our children it would have been perfect! Staff were very attentive and helpful.

food was very poor. we saw so much going back. it took 45 min. to get our drinks. Horrible flouescent lights, no table cloths/candles, poor service. The staff spent the whole time piling used glasses/plates in the centre of the restaurant - so it looked terrible and was very noisey - why not take the rubbish straight to the kitchen? maybe have flowers in the middle instead. we were not asked how our meal was....

We stayed at Down Hall on a KGB deal £99 for 2 dinner b & b.We ate dinner in The Grill Room. We discovered that people on the KGB deal had a very limited menu, however the food that we had was very good. My husband and I both had chicken soup with truffle oil to start, then chicken breasts wrapped in parma ham & fillet of hake as our mains followed by mango creme brulee & black currant tart - all washed down with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. The staff were very attentive and appeared just when you needed them to which was impressive.
