Really lovely location on the beach. Abit difficult to find. You go threw a tunnel to get to the stoney beach. Lovely young lady was very pleasant. Lovely views. Food was nice and coffee. Good service.
A lot of attempted style - very little substance. Over priced food styled on an early 2000s gastro pub staffed by people who are unprofessional and rude. We tried to provide constructive feedback but the "manager" just smirked and dismissed us.
Work in progress.
After being let go during Covid new owners have a grand master plan to reinvent the site. Give it six months and a lot of hard work should be able to challenge other nursery’s in the area.
It’s not just a garden centre!
Butter Cross High Stree, Battle TN33 0SP England, England
We were ravenous when we arrived in Battle village and found every establishment either not serving (chef having a meltdown), limited or overpriced options heavily based on bread or pastry (not great for the gluten intolerant amongst us) or shut altogether...so against our better judgement we decided to go to the English Heritage café at the Abbey and Battleground.
The offering there was also very limited, we were served by unenthusiastic teenagers and when the food arrived it was thoroughly disappointing. The level of mass production and lack of interest in the eating experience in these heritage chain cafés is quite sad really and as we ate our dry buns with two slivers of luke-warm pork and dry stuffing patty barely moistened by ultra processed apple sauce we overheard a group of French visitors expressing exactly the same sentiments...the food in England is bland and dry. We were embarrassed for our country. Please English Heritage, we beg you, can you address this?! We are members and love what you do in general but your cafés are overpriced and underwhelming.
What a great find perfect for a trip to Rye & Camber - especially as you can take the hound. Dog friendly with a dining room to take the dog in. Great food (huge portions) in the evening and a lovely breakfast to start the day. Comfy room with your own doggie garden. If you like real ale then there is a micro brewery 2 minutes walk away so a livener before settling into dinner.
Friendly service and an easy going team.
What’s not to like
Can’t comment on atmosphere as we had a takeaway, firstly, we were overcharged, because we wondered why it costs £53.20 for 5 dishes, plus 3 sauces, plus when we got our order, we had an extra chicken fried rice which was not ordered. Furthermore, BBQ sauce tasted like oily water, sweet and sour sauce was okay, and curry sauce full of oil. Chicken satay had no flavour and tasted rubbery, and beef curry was very chewy, could not swallow. Very disappointed beaches we were recommended this restaurant but won’t be using again.
Would respect a response due to the fact we were overcharged and underwhelmed.
we have been coming to the mermaid inn not quite as long as it has been open - about 40 years !- experiences over the years have of course varied .The restaurant is in 2 rooms both very attractive , the staff are friendly , efficient , human ,the dinner we had last night was excellent - lovely local scallops then for my wife pork belly and myself wild sea bass followed by a chocolate marquis and myself passion fruit soufflé , everything we had was quite delicious , a very enjoyable dinner .
We live only a few miles away , this visit will encourage us to return quite soon .
Well done the kitchen and the staff .
The staff are so rude
I was standing there waiting for my drink today and the lady behind the counter was moaning about living here and saying the water and the food are terrible. Quite loudly - how rude. If she doesn’t want to live and work I t his country perhaps she could give the job to my son who lives locally and would like a job. Disgusting behaviour Costa!!!!!

Popped in for a bite to eat on warm, sunny day. Got exactly what I hoped for - reasonable food at reasonable prices and super friendly service. Don’t expect gourmet but lots of smiles and laughter. Cakes are huge! One small...
