We were ravenous when we arrived in Battle village and found every establishment either not serving (chef having a meltdown), limited or overpriced options heavily based on bread or pastry (not great for the gluten intolerant amongst us) or shut altogether...so against our better judgement we decided to go to the English Heritage café at the Abbey and Battleground. The offering there was also very limited, we were served by unenthusiastic teenagers and when the food arrived it was thoroughly disappointing. The level of mass production and lack of interest in the eating experience in these heritage chain cafés is quite sad really and as we ate our dry buns with two slivers of luke-warm pork and dry stuffing patty barely moistened by ultra processed apple sauce we overheard a group of French visitors expressing exactly the same sentiments...the food in England is bland and dry. We were embarrassed for our country. Please English Heritage, we beg you, can you address this?! We are members and love what you do in general but your cafés are overpriced and underwhelming.

Faultless. Friendly and professional staff, food very good, plenty of choice and is very clean. This really is the best English Heritage cafe I have ever visited.

Went here in May 2023 and was surprised by the service, food and friendliness. A good place for a quick snack. Try the Saxon cakes. Yum.

This is a pleasant tea room that is kept spotlessly clean. The staff were friendly and the coffee and cakes were delicious. Definitely to be recommended if visiting Battle Abbey

Lovely setting inside the Battle Abbey site, which is run by English Heritage. The cafe was very clean and the tables well spread about (some undercover for inclement weather). A nice selection of cakes was available

Can highly recommend the lunch bag. It comes fully loaded with more than enough for lunch, and a choice of hot or cold drink. Staff were helpful.

we visited as a family of five and were delighted. the cafe has a nice range of vegan, gluten free and other dietary foods, as well as homemade cupcakes by the newbie herself! how is she not running the place?? such a friendly lovely lady - the manager (i think his name is neil from his wonky and particularly low name badge - also has a wonky foot apparently) seemed very friendly and even offered a smile. it’s lovely - the people at bodiam are quite grumpy; nothing compared to the delightful staff in the cafe. i was slightly disappointed by the easy egg hunt but i am 62. the vegan sausage rolls taste nice - greggs should be shaking. but hey, we love a bargain. will come again tomorrow when the shop is open to buy some perplonkers (idk the technical term) plus, there was a lady (the lady who was cold and wore her ‘funny hat’) who was friendly and liked my chihuahua boris and my old pug called goose. these dogs are just great and so friendly so i expected no less! thank you national trust for your lovely welcome! but i think i brought the wrong membership card (apparently harold did the same thing which was why he lost the battle - a 17 year old told me that so it must be true). love you all! stay safe and socially distanced xox

Well done to English Heritage for having the Cafe open for takeaway. Having walked around the Abbey grounds, they were very welcome. Obviously things are limited but there was a reasonable range of drinks, sandwiches and other snacks, with toilets adjacent, all managed within social distancing guidelines. There was a picnic area outside in which we could sit in the sunshine looking over the imaginative sculptural childrens' playground which is currently closed.

This is a truly dreadful facility which English Heritage should be thoroughly ashamed of. At 12 noon on September 19th (not high summer but there were still many visitors to the Abbey), there were only 3 sandwiches available - all BLT. The available food consisted of scones and cakes. At noon, the cafe was not especially busy but many tables had not been cleared. There simply did not seem sufficient staff on duty to operate the cafe efficiently. The tables themselves were a disgrace. Although relatively new, the tables had lost their surfaces so were scalded and stained. There is no way that such tables could ever be cleaned properly. The cushions on the chairs were stained and dirty. There was only one redeeming feature of the "cafe experience". My grandmother was a pastry cook and made the most delightful Victoria Sponge. The sponge on sale here was not as good (of course!) but was better than anything else that I have tasted in many a long year.

The caffetteria is located next to the exit of the Abbey. It is not very big but there are plenty of tables both inside and outside. It offers a menu at lunch as well as tea or coffee and cakes. I suggest: - to ask the soup's flavour (I didn't and I was given a disgusting garlic soup) - to sit inside as outside there are many bees It is an ideal stop before or after the visit of the Abbey.

After walking round Battle Abbey and the battlefield, what better place is there to drop in for refreshment than the on site Battle Abbey Cafe. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was plenty of snacks to choose from and all home produced. There was plenty of seating available, both inside and outside, and, considering its location, the prices were reasonable

This restaurant was empty apart from us on a Saturday evening, could be the 70s decor thats putting off a lot of customers.

I’m down on holiday and eaten here TWICE! It’s that good. I recommend the Dansak and the naan was delicious as was the sag aloo - lovely mint sauce and dips and fresh crispy poppadums. It’s a small restaurant but better than many larger ones . Friendly staff and good value - top marks 😃
