A few improvements to take on board. Three vegetarians and one meat eater. Ordered two vegetarian nut roasts and it turned out to be boiled rice with nuts and berries. The roast potatoes and parsnips were lovely, the soup my husband had was lovely and the roast beef for our friend ordered was eaten without leaving a scrap. The homemade ice cream was filled with ice crystals and could not be eaten (which was a pity as it was very tasty). For thee meals, one soup and four desserts and four non alcoholic drinks the bill came to £120. The vegetarian roasts need work. I did ask the waiter if the roast vegetables had been cooked in oil and if the gravy was vegetarian and they had to return to the kitchen to ask. Not reassuring for a veggie... All in all it was good food in a quaint restaurant. The restaurant was empty on a Sunday lunch time which I did find strange. A proper veggie roast would have been nice though. A huge plus is that it is dog friendly.

Quaint little restaurant with varied Sunday evening menu from traditional Sunday roasts, to pies, puddings and fish. Dessert menu also had a good range of puddings and ice creams. Served in a timely manner, with roast lamb and vegetables cooked perfectly. A fair price for a good meal.

On arrival we were met and welcomed. Our room was a bit disappointing. Whilst being in one of the ‘roundels’ was novel it was tired and needs a lift, for example, no handles on the wardrobe, when opened it contained the ironing board, electric heater and the folding suitcase stool so you couldn’t hang anything. The armchairs have dated covers, a colourless plastic rose sits on a shelf and the toilet lampshade is full of cobwebs. On the other hand the towels were very soft and the bed linen clean and fresh. Dinner was great. Our host, Andrew was excellent. He waited on all the tables and his customer service was brilliant. Our food was hot, tasty, filling and reasonably priced. In the morning breakfast was the polar opposite to dinner. We were told to take a seat, ‘good morning I hope you slept well’, would have been a nice greeting. I expected nice thick bread for toast or forming the sausage sandwich. Instead it was plain medium sliced brown bread from a supermarket. It’s a lovely historic property but needs some TLC and attention to detail to justify the price point.

Lovely place, but how do the owners think a restaurant and bar can be run by one person who could not cope and is forgetful? Long delay for food, not asked if we would like anything to go with our pies, well yes mustard please, oh and can I please have another pint, hell no! Vegetables overcooked and slapped on the plate, presented poorly. So overall poor and disappointing, would not recommend.

Not what we expected after being impressed by the appearance of the building from the outside. The bar and surroundings gave us hope to experience and good quality Sunday roast as they had two sittings and three roasts on offer. Noon to 15:00 and 17:30 to 20:00. We chose the evening slot .. on arrival we were informed that the roast lamb was off and the choice the was beef or chicken!! We opted for beef roast with all the trimmings after being told all our food is home made!!! The beef was tough and over cooked ( top side beef joint) stuffing balls were frozen and deep fried, the parsnip was frozen , the roast potatoes looked like they were frozen , the veg was overcooked but looked fresh! The Yorkshire pudding was home made but the batter was not cooked and was raw and was inedible. Oh the gravy was dark in colour and tasted like thick dark brown Bisto type( worse than school grade lunches) the whole meals was of the quality you might expect at a care home and not a hotel/restaurant. We will not return and not recommend roast lunch here!

Excellent staff, delicious food, interesting building. The apple & blackberry crumble was outstanding. The bar man couldn't do enough for us, he made the evening. Down to earth, home cooked food, served with a large serving of great humour. A perfect evening, thank you.

Having lived in the Rye area for 25 years and often driven past the Playden Oasts but never actually been in, curiosity finally got the better of me. Some locals hadn't spoken positively of it and I was intrigued to know what I would find. The answer was, a very satisfying meal in a lovely environment which I should have visited sooner. In particular, the table service was great with the young waitress a highly able worker with a pleasant manner.

Having been here before and enjoyed it, we booked again as staying in camber sands. But this time thoroughly disappointed with the food, and more so, as when leaving , saw a lovely prawn sandwich, and queried why we didn't get that on the menu, and the lady said, she only game us the main, dinner menu, and didn't give us the lighter lunch menu.. My pork belly, apparently slow cooked, was hard to cut and chewy, and crackerling was chewy, my mum had the salmon, and it was covered with cream cheese, and once taken off, salmon was over cooked and dry.. The new potato's appeared microwaved, and tasteless. Unfortunately I wouldn't return after that experience

We were staying a mile or so away from the restaurant and someone had written on the flyer that they had had a lovely meal and would recommend it ... so we thought we'd give it a go. As it was a Saturday and we thought it might be busy, we called in during the afternoon and booked a table for 7:00 pm. We arrived bang on time and ordered our drinks and food within 10 minutes. The drinks came very quickly; not so the food. It took till 8:00 pm for our meals to arrive. When I asked what had caused the delay, I was told it was just that a family of 7 had arrived just before us and all the meals had to be served in order. Fair enough, but there were only 10 other people in the restaurant, including the family of 7. The restaurant was nowhere near full so goodness knows what the service would be like when it's busy.

We brought our dog with us, so we sat outside in the walled area near the Oast room (too close to a main road). Wife ordered the steak & ale pie and the pie was a wedge from a packaged pie. I ordered the rib-eye steak with blue cheese sauce and the steak was good but not great, lots of average-tasting chips. We shared a dessert (pear/ginger/caramel pudding) which was amazing. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Prices were inline with the average quality of the meals.

The owners manner leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the hotels and restaurants around Rye and the Peasmarsh area have been so friendly and welcoming. However, the lady owning this restaurant was not of the same ilk. She didn’t seem to have time for the customers and when we questioned one of our meals, she stared blankly and was almost hostile towards us. She made a throwaway comment about having another meal instead but there was no apology made. She then walked away while we were still considering what to do. Although the plate was left untouched, she made no comment about this or apology when taking the plate away. On the positive side, she did not charge for this meal although did not discuss this with us. We thought the customer was always supposed to be right but obviously not in this place. Will not be visiting again when there are so many pubs and fantastic hotels with amazing food but more importantly friendly and welcoming attitudes towards customers nearby.

A very happy and welcoming young lady greeted us, she could not have been kinder and more helpful, it was a refreshing change to be greeted by someone so pleasant and she was the same with everyone who came in. We ordered - a burger - huge and delicious! Salmon with cream cheese crust, and a chicken with stilton wrapped in bacon. It was all delicious, if a little too much on the plate, but we ate the lot and cleared our plates. My only 1 critique - I had roast potatoes with the chicken, which were hard, boiled pots would have been completely perfect. But overall a delicious hearty lunch,

Visited for Sunday lunch without having made a booking. Warm welcome and only one other couple occupying a table, which surprised us. Very comfortable restaurant with interesting cosy decor, circular in shape being located in the base of one of the former Oast houses.Drinks were served to the table very quickly and two roast beef lunches (there was a choice) ordered at £9.95 each. However, it then took a very long time for our meals to arrive - and my wife mentioned that her fruit juice tasted of cabbage, which it did. She exchanged it for a mineral water......The meals were served plated and looked good. The Yorkshire pudding certainly was, being home made and representing the high spot. There was a whole parsnip and the potatoes tasted as if they had been cooked in duck fat. Unfortunately the cabbage and carrots were on the mushy side and the beef, though generously sliced, was from a tough joint - our dogs enjoyed most of it when we got home I'm afraid. When we received the bill it appeared, though the bill wasn't itemised, that we had been charged for both of my wife's drinks, even though one was returned as tainted. Not the best lunch we have had, which is a great pity as we live locally.

We visited for lunch with family, having visited Playden Oasts for Sunday lunch on a number of occasions. My son wanted a burger which was on the website menu, but not the Sunday menu. After checking with the kitchen we were told this could be accommodated. My father had garlic mushrooms on toast for a starter, which was served by someone from the kitchen. This appeared to comprise a stack of very lightly toasted sliced white bread, drowned in sauce and a generous quantity of mushrooms. It didn't look appetizing, and the sauce meant the toast was a wet mush. Two of u had whitebait which was cooked ok. For mains the burger with chips turned up just before the four roasts. We had quite a delay between starters and the main, but no comment from staff as to why service was slow. The roast beef was very tough (two other diners later rejected their beef and asked for new meals - apparently this was blamed on a different chef to normal), this is below the standard we had come to expect of this establishment. We also had deserts - Apple crumble was nice, though the crumble was rather thick in places. After asking for the bill we were rather surprised that the burger with chips was £12, with the roasts being £10 that seemed a bit expensive. Overall a disappointing visit, we hope to see from reviews in the future that things improve to normal standards in due course

We were staying in a holiday cottage nearby and wanted dinner out in a nice pub, which the Playden Oasts certainly was. With Storm Angus raging outside, it was lovely to be welcomed into the warmth. We were shown through to a small dining room which was nicely busy (always a good sign). I had the fillet of salmon topped with cream cheese and a herb crust, which was lovely, and my husband had the lamb shank which, as he says, you can't really get wrong! The only negative observation I had was that the dining room was a little cramped, but understood they were short of staff due to illness, and therefore one lady was having to run both the restaurant and the bar. She did a sterling job, and we enjoyed the experience as a whole.

A charming setting, the restaurant is in one of the oast houses and the food was exceptional. Lovely hostess, great staff and very much value for money. A great place to eat, and I dare say to stay at as well!

Very nice food and great service at this restaurant within a hotel. Dog friendly too, dogs welcome inside and in garden.

We went here the last day of our vacation on our way back from Hastings to the campsite. We stumbled upon it by pure chance. The staff was very kind, and the food very good. They're also very kids-friendly.

The restaurant's lovely the staff were lovely, the service was good, the food was nice, but I was disappointed as we booked 8 of us, and they asked if we could come at 2 30 , their last booking for lunch, we go there at 2 and had a drink in their garden, when we ordered they told us they had run out of pork!! so 6 of us were disappointed, also it was a very very hot day, and although they had doors open we were roasting inside, very uncomfortable, their beer chiller wasn't working, so we had to buy bottles, which increases the price of the bill, very lovely inside but when your so hot its unbearable it took away the pleasure, so we had our dessert in the garden, most of the desserts had the wow factor, and once we went into the garden every other person eating joined us out there, but I feel as a good will gesture they could have taken off a round of drinks or given us a free bottle of wine, due to the chiller not working.

The first time was with a group of ten. All meals arrived as ordered, hot and generous portions. Service was attentive without being over powering and we all had a lovely evening. I prefer a better lit dining room but that is personal choice. I ate there again last weekend with another couple. The standard of the food was equally good. They were very busy but we didn't feel at all rushed. Friendly staff help the relaxed atmosphere. One member of the party was less than impressed with a customers dog who seemed very at home on the bar - not the best for hygiene but maybe part of the atmosphere.

Raffaella is a fantastic hostess, so warm & friendly. We ate on 2 consecutive nights while on a weekend break and enjoyed both meals immensely. It is also very good value.Homely, cosy, quirky and fantastic food, what more could you want. Oh and my husband really enjoyed their local bitter.

We were staying in the hotel, so it seemed logical to dine there on the first night. The food was so good (and reasonably priced) that we chose to do so for the rest of our stay as well. Quality is first rate and portions are VERY generous.

I wrote a review of the hotel already, quaint little place with great service, like a step back in time, almost 70's but in a very cool way.

Well I'd booked a table for my mum, aunty and niece on a Saturday evening. Being a fussy lot I checked out the menu beforehand so I was surprised that on being handed the menu it was different. I questioned the waitress who said that it changes regularly but the website doesn't state that. Anyhow they obligingly made a couple of prawn cocktails which were nice. On the specials board they offered dressed crab and new potatoes which we ordered but when the potatoes didn't arrive we had to ask-they eventually turned up half way through the meal- without even an apology. I had scampi which was nice but I had assumed the waitress was coming back with a choice of sauces or even to ask if we required anything further- she didn't, so I had to go and find her to ask her for ketchup! We were charged for 4 full puddings even though I only had ice cream. We noticed that the people staying at the b&bs the place offers got so much more attention from the owner-we received nothing. Also a couple cane in with a dog and whilst I'm not against dogs- to see it being fed from the plate was a bit much for a restaurant- we were not asked if we minded a dog being present. To be honest if the food had not been 'OK' I would not have given this establishment any stars!

We ate here on our second night at the hotel and are so glad we did. The menu is varied and there is also a daily Specials board. The food was delicious, very fresh and tasty, plenty of it. We were glad that the chef actually served our dessert so that we could congratulate him on his delicious food.

We have always ate at our local befeeter but now we have tried this one I will never eat at our local again. The chef is amazing food came out hot looked amazing and tasted the best I have tasted in a long time. This chef must love his job and I hope he is proud of what he achieved. We ordered a 3 course and couldn't manage it. We have to order a 3 course at our local as portions are so small. I still can't get over how amazing my meal was. And the place its self we have never been didn't even know it was there. It was just by chance that rainbow restaurant had no heating so we googled and found this place. We was worried would end up at the one near premiere inn, but this place is so lovely. Cosy, welcoming, we have said we will travel an hour just to go and have lunch again or even book a hotel to spend the evening here as such a nice place. Everything I wanted relaxed. Warm and such friendly staff. Waitress couldn't do enough for us. Wish I had room for desert.

Really lovely location on the beach. Abit difficult to find. You go threw a tunnel to get to the stoney beach. Lovely young lady was very pleasant. Lovely views. Food was nice and coffee. Good service.

Sunday lunch with friends. Food all fresh from the freezer along with round meat. Yum. No need to say more Apparently a review has to be a bit longer.. I’d rather not waste my breath though.
