A very disappointed local… Haven’t been here for a while but thought we would give the food a try for sunday lunch as it was the only place not fully booked in our area, we soon found out why…..waited an hour for our starters… there was only 3 small tables eating (including us) and not a single drinker so don’t really understand why it took so long? My starter was cold, the squid was extremely chewy. Mains looked phenomenal, but to taste- bland as anything. The staff just seemed to give the impression of not having a clue what they were doing by over charging us almost £50!!! Really disappointed. We wont be back.

I didnt stay there, but I had food and the service was impeccable! I greeted by a lovely lady (unfortunately didn't get her name) and Tommy (went there on Thursday 11th April 2024) they were both very welcoming and charming. Cracking jokes and having a laugh, lovely nice and chilled out pub. You can tell that they love it there. A real nice vibe about the whole pub. The food was very tasty and overall I'll be coming back as it has been the best customer service I have ever had.

We stayed here for the night and on arrival all was fine! The room was ok. Something missing. Not much character. Blinds run short so people can see I in bed so had to hang a towel up. Creakiest floor I have ever heard and a crazy staircase! We went to look around battle and when we came back were questioned as to why we were there. Ie we can’t eat which we weren’t, we just wanted a drink before going to our room. Had a conversation with the girls behind the bar about breakfast the next morning and told to be down nearer to 10am. We got down at 9.45 questioned again as to why by we were there. Finally sat down, and waited 10 mins for menu. Got half size lattes to everyone else and then food took 45 mins. Food was beautiful! The chef obviously takes pride in what he does. Just a shame that service is not up to par. We didn’t feel welcome at all. More of an inconvenience which is a shame.

Regarding the accommodation only (breakfast was not included, although it was good)… nice comfortable bed. Limited hanging space (no wardrobe) and the en-suite was very very small ie tiny!! Also needs a refurb. Also it was a (very) cold night yet the central heating went off by the time we got to our room (just gone midnight)… room was very very cold, absolutely freezing… and the heating didn’t come on again until we were getting up. Floor boards very squeaky but this is possibly understandable as this is very old building, with lots of character. Poor lighting especially for my wife trying to do her hair / make-up. Would we stay again? not in winter if the heating is off.

Unfortunately we had the worst meal we have had for years. My husband had cod and chips and the batter was brown and reheated so much that the fish was stuck to the batter. I had ham, eggs and chips. The ham was warm to the extent the top layer was hard and curled up at the edges. the chips reheated so much that I could not get the fork into most of them, so I left half of the food. The reason we know the meals were reheated is because we waited for only about five minutes to have it brought to our table. We have eaten twice before at this pub and had good food so it was a disappointment

Having waited for half an hour for our food, the waiter then came to say that the skate had gone 'off'. We had to wait another half hour when my friend's brill with crab ragu was inedible due to too much salt (and anyway the ragu tasted of almost everything except crab) with the melba toast (supposed to be a crunchy accompaniment) was piled under the dish making it a soggy mess. The only redeeming point was the waiter took this latter dish off the bill and the coffees were on the house. We will not be going back.

Food was good, Sunday lunch in November and the fire wasn’t on so atmosphere wasn’t as cosy as one would hope. Also got charged £3 for a slice of bread which is outrageous. Overall ok dining experience but there are a number of pubs that are better and more reasonably priced in the area so wouldn’t return in a hurry.

We stayed a night in this interesting old building, and would return anytime. The staff are first-rate in terms of friendliness and helpfulness, and nothing was too much trouble for them. The dinner was excellent, really well-cooked and original, and my vegan partner was well-catered for with interesting choices rarely encountered elsewhere. The building is full of character, with quirky staircases accessing the bedrooms, and the breakfast was very good too. The room we had was perfectly fine, if not the height of modern-day overdone luxury luxury (we don't need that), and the whole place was good in every respect. Best of all was the charming and helpful manner of the lovely staff. We'll be back right enough!

Soup was OK but when the patter arrived it was miniscule for the £15 they were charging. We had ordered 3 hummus, roast vegetable and tapenade and stated we were veganThe 'flat bread' was a small pitta bread , 3 tiny pots of hummus for 1 very very small pitta bread, roasted cubed beetroot and little else on another pitta bread and tapenade which was spread with what I thought was olive tapenade , it was in fact anchovy .Really disappointing. Dont say you do vegan food when you clearly dont know very much about it.I did tell the waitress and was gallantly rewarded with another miniscule pitta bread. So a group of 8 of us came in tonight for food and drinks. The food was amazing, service from all the staff was great but I have to mention Kerry who was super friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for her and the cocktails she made us were amazing.

Just had a 2 night break here. I could not fault the staff at all they were very helpful, polite and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are comfortable and spotlessly clean. We had a minor problem with one of our dinners which was rectified immediately. They insisted on providing us with a couple of drinks as an apology. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here.Lovely place, thank you for a wonderful stay.

Fantastic food with great service. We were worried by some reviews but thought we would try anyway. Glad we did. Lovely food in a great setting. Waiter and waitress’s could not be more helpful. The mules were fantastic!

Stopped here for lunch, unfortunately the food was terrible. Chips under cooked fish swimming in grease, came with a sauce that looked like homemade tarter but was more like a cheap branded mayo with chop spring onion in it, very bland lacking in flavour. My partner ordered Ham, egg and chips at £13 + he expected it to be good, unfortunately this wasn’t the case. Chips very under cooked too, the poached egg was good, couple of slices of basic ham with so much hollandaise sauce pour over the meal we couldn’t see the food under it. Coke was flat, as I tasted it the waitress was approaching, heard me say this to my partner and offered to bring me a fresh coke. That was nice until I was brought another flat coke. I didn’t bother finishing it. If you’re travelling threw on your holidays don’t waste your money eating here.

I have visited the Chequers Inn a few times and every time i do i am impressed with the food, atmpophere and extensive drinks list.the food is all seasonal and cooked on site. everything is made there even the sauces.I had the baked camembert to start and my friend had the fish chowder then we both had the steak to follow. the steak was sensational, it cut like butter and was perfectly cooked.the chips are always crisp on the outside and fluffy inside and the seasonal veg that they serve is so tasty. The staff are attentive and friendly and the wait time food is minimal considering how busy the restaurant can be. I would also recommend having a good look at their cocktail list. they do the best pornstar martini in the area!

Popped in for advertised breakfast for our daughter’s birthday. Not a bad day and with COVID-19 still ongoing and being over 50 we thought better to sit just outside for safety. First mistake as gent said no table service outside. Strange in these times. OK not a problem. Menu not large but adequate until he said no pancakes. Well that wiped out about half the menu really. Suffice to say I did not think the welcome was good so we took our business elsewhere. Had a lovely breakfast in the town. I like to support local business but they need to step up. Real shame.

Came here yesterday as was staying in Battle for the evening. Food was very good and great desserts too. Friendly waitress. Was a cute traditional pub and would definitely go back. (Lots of sanitising stations and tables spread apart!)

Service can be a tad slow when your table is ready to be cleared and if I were to be picky portions are a little on the small side in comparison to the prices. Other wise staff are friendly and the food is very tasty.
