We stayed here for two nights on the “2 nights for 1” deal and would gladly do so again if offered. The reviewer who said the place was a bit sad must be able to afford more luxurious places than us as we found it well maintained and the reviewer who said it could be cleaner is obviously living on a different planet! Apart from the receptionist who had only been there 2 weeks, the staff were welcoming and efficient. It was only the chef on duty in the kitchen on the first night that needs talking to: the starter took long enough to come, but the main course took so long that the lady on the bar had the good sense to offer complimentary drinks. And when my sausage & mash came it was swamped in gravy - why not in a boat I wonder! I was looking forward to sea bass but this was off the nexus that night. The banoffee pie was so outstanding, that I had it again on night 2! But why not serve it without cream when asked to? The prawn starter was good enough, but the Canon of lamb main course was to die for! I think 4 choices for both starter & dessert, and 5 mains, is a bit limiting. Room 1 was dog-friendly and had the most stupendous views out of the window - which opened properly to aerate the room. The bed was comfortable - even for me - and there was both wardrobe and 12 drawers. The TV was enormous and well positioned for bedtime viewing. The bath was pleasantly deep but sadly rather wide and so took an age to fill. The expelair was weak which made the bathroom rather stuffy. There was a 12” electric fan in the wardrobe and an extra blanket as the windows are single glazed. The grounds are beautifully kept and dog-friendly with a poo bin. The cooked breakfast on both mornings was excellent. Both fried & poached eggs were expertly done and it was nice to have a coffee machine so that you could choose what you fancy on the day. Sadly no grapefruit juice; just apple & orange. But the best thing was the dish of bacon & sausage for the dog! As many reviewers say, the drive needs resurfacing and the hotel needs to bite the bullet and have it done. Turning left at the lane is also not to be recommended but there is not a road to be seen from the hotel! The hotel is so quiet! Room 1 is above Reception but we never heard the comings & goings of residents. Dogs are neither allowed in the restaurant nor the breakfast room, but there is a large table on one side of the bar and 3 tables on the other side suitable. I would recommend this hotel whether you have a dog or not.

We was on a pub tour of the area and passed this on a way to another pub and thought “oh this looks quaint” sometimes the most impromptu pubs are the best and this one certainly is! Four ales were on draft we opted for the salcombe gold Which was excellently kept. I loved the laid back atmosphere with dog friendly sofas. They have a beautiful boxer dog named boots who greets you on arrival who is loving in nature with people and dogs. Very chilled and dog friendly and I will certainly visit again and stay for longer when I’m next in the area. Whatpub online does not hype this place is much as it should.

Amazing level of service from one of the ladies at The Ridge Café. I want to thank the member of staff who offered and brought out to the car park, our order to me and my two rescue dogs, one of which, new to us, is very nervous following traumatic times in recent years. It was raining but this lady absolutely wanted to do it, and the dogs were able to meet her - one was enthusiastic and the new boy just looked puzzled, probably wondering who was so kind to bring out this meal to us. It was great, gentle, exposure for ‘new boy’ and a highlight for me too. I’m sorry that I don’t have the lady’s name but she was so good, thank you!
