We stayed here for two nights on the “2 nights for 1” deal and would gladly do so again if offered. The reviewer who said the place was a bit sad must be able to afford more luxurious places than us as we found it well maintained and the reviewer who said it could be cleaner is obviously living on a different planet! Apart from the receptionist who had only been there 2 weeks, the staff were welcoming and efficient. It was only the chef on duty in the kitchen on the first night that needs talking to: the starter took long enough to come, but the main course took so long that the lady on the bar had the good sense to offer complimentary drinks. And when my sausage & mash came it was swamped in gravy - why not in a boat I wonder! I was looking forward to sea bass but this was off the nexus that night. The banoffee pie was so outstanding, that I had it again on night 2! But why not serve it without cream when asked to? The prawn starter was good enough, but the Canon of lamb main course was to die for! I think 4 choices for both starter & dessert, and 5 mains, is a bit limiting. Room 1 was dog-friendly and had the most stupendous views out of the window - which opened properly to aerate the room. The bed was comfortable - even for me - and there was both wardrobe and 12 drawers. The TV was enormous and well positioned for bedtime viewing. The bath was pleasantly deep but sadly rather wide and so took an age to fill. The expelair was weak which made the bathroom rather stuffy. There was a 12” electric fan in the wardrobe and an extra blanket as the windows are single glazed. The grounds are beautifully kept and dog-friendly with a poo bin. The cooked breakfast on both mornings was excellent. Both fried & poached eggs were expertly done and it was nice to have a coffee machine so that you could choose what you fancy on the day. Sadly no grapefruit juice; just apple & orange. But the best thing was the dish of bacon & sausage for the dog! As many reviewers say, the drive needs resurfacing and the hotel needs to bite the bullet and have it done. Turning left at the lane is also not to be recommended but there is not a road to be seen from the hotel! The hotel is so quiet! Room 1 is above Reception but we never heard the comings & goings of residents. Dogs are neither allowed in the restaurant nor the breakfast room, but there is a large table on one side of the bar and 3 tables on the other side suitable. I would recommend this hotel whether you have a dog or not.

We were lucky enough to stay here as a birthday gift from the family Hard to find I must admit but once we did everything was great Lovely service nice choice of drinks, the food menu was a bit limited but I don’t want to take away anything from this fact. No doubt it’s because the hotel was so very quiet! We stayed two nights and we were very very cosy! We will be back in the summer to try it out again Thank you!

The dinner was of poor quality, looked very unappetising, chicken was very tough, and vegetables were grey. Presentation was shocking. The photos placed here by management must’ve been taken when a guest chef had been employed to prepare these delicious looking dishes. What we received was of lesser quality than a canteen producing “en masse”. The restaurant area is huge and so brightly lit - not at all cosy or inviting. There is absolutely no atmosphere at all. I can’t recommend this to anyone given m own experience.

This hotel is in the country and has great views of the fields in the front, and good parking. The staff were all friendly and helpful, although not to many around. This meant when you wanted some service you had to search for it. On our stay there were not to many people there. The whole place is typical of a Best Western, very average but you know it will not be a disaster. The food and service for the evening meal was good, the Calamari was excellent, my sirloin steak very chewy, not the best. Breakfast was great. Our room was functional, without being special. The room was up two flights of stairs, which is not the best when you are 81.

The hotel was short staffed, but the staff on site went the extra mile to ensure our stay way a good one. Extra credit goes to Mary who was on reception, but double as bar person, cream tea maker and also in the restaurant - nothing was too much trouble and all done with a smile. The gardens were trim and lovely. Parking was good. Our room was clean and comfortable. The food was very good. We would stay here again.

Excellent ingredients, well cooked and presented, decent choices will return. Home made items such as carrot coriander and coconut soup of the day, and the butterscotch toffee with proper cake pudding supported great main courses. Attentive and well supervised staff add to a great experience. Lounge bar is also a nice place to be with a good choice.

My husband and I decided to buy a Halloween Dinner voucher for two and were delighted with such a lovely meal. Not only very delicious and looked appetising too. At first we thought that it would be small portions as it was £25 for 3 courses but the portion size was huge. We stayed the night and the room was spotlessly clean, had a view of the grounds and the bathroom had a huge walk in shower. Another little tick for me was the self illuminating mirror which was great for putting on make up! Will definitely come again and definitely recommend to others either for food or stay.

We had booked a table beforehand. Unfortunately it was the day of Storm Dennis so we hurried in from the car park to the restaurant. There is good outside space in the courtyard if the weather is good. We had an under 2 year old with us but the staff were able to offer him a very good child's portion of pork. We all had either roast pork or roast beef. The vegetables were excellent. We then all chose desserts which were also good. Many thanks to Fernando and the other staff members for a most enjoyable lunch. Sorry I didn't take photos

Booked last minute through Booking.com The hotel is a little difficult to find and my sat nav took me down some very narrow roads but what a stunning location when you finally arrive. Building is very old and has lots of interesting features. I was allocated a massive family room (room 30) with a large Double bed and two Singles. The bathroom was large with a very high ceiling and roof light. The furniture and fittings were a little worn and dated but perfectly in character with the building, which was spotlessly clean. The staff were incredibly friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I had fish, chips and mushy peas delivered to my room for my evening meal and the cooked breakfast in the restaurant the following morning was delicious. All in all an excellent stay and great value at £80 b&b

We attended the restaurant on a Sunday at 4pm with our friends. The service was poor, and the food average. The young waiter , whilst very pleasant , insisted on calling us ‘you guys’ ... not appropriate for 4 people well over 50. Our drinks were delivered to us at the table still with the lids on the bottles. Our salmon and prawn cocktail starters were very nice but the potato skins were bland and floury. The main issue was the dreadfully salty gravy that accompanied the main meal - it was really very unplesant , and one of our party was unable to finish her meal. We bought it to the attention of our young waiter when he came to check we were ok - he disappeared and the matter was not mentioned again. We then told the other waiter who arrived to check on us .... again we heard nothing . There then followed a lengthy wait ( in an empty restaurant apart from ourselves) for anyone to come and clear the table and ask about desert/coffee. By then we just wanted to leave , so we paid the bill and walked out of the restaurant which was, by then , devoid of all staff . We felt that our complaint should have been acknowledged by the staff/chef at the very least and an apology offered. We won’t be returning .

We were checked in by the superb Steven, who went out of his way to make sure we were aware of all that the Hotel had to offer. Wife, myself and 18 year old daughter in Exeter to look around the Uni and were on a B and b basis.......until we arrived at the Hotel and were introduced (by Steve - who else!!) to their upgrade add-3-course-dinner for £25!!! Gave it a go first night, as had enough time in the car (although daughter was ill and didn't take part), but wow.....what a choice!! No restrictions or supplements, so Scallops followed by seafood linguine for me and Calamari and Chix Jalfrezi for my wife.......all home cooked!! desserts were Cheesecake and Choc something, but amazing value!next night, there was no decision to be made, so more Calamari, Chix strips for starters....a lovely Rib-eye for me and Salmon for mum plus desserts. Chef was a lovely young lad who fussed over our dogs (they had set up a lovely window table especially in the Lounge) as he owned 3 himself.......a youngster with talent for sure!!

The food was amazing and the chef came out to see if we were enjoying the food. Enjoyed a loud and cheerful Christmas Party here. About 100 of us being good humoured and somewhat over the top. Food was fine, beer was great and the service was very personal. This is a non corporate hotel. Despite appearances, it's pretty small but has a great view back towards the city and a good site for fireworks. I reckon it would be great for a summer wedding with lots of outdoor space and it was certainly well suited to 100 for a company Christmas bash.

So went to the hotel for dinner on Monday 14th July with my family to celebrate my 43rd birthday. Such a huge disappointment from start to finish. I wish now we had gone some where else,I am so unhappy it's was horrendous. Firstly my pre dinner gin and tonic came with a slice of lemon and lime, yes both in the same glass, why I have no idea. We ordered in the bar then moved through to the restaurant. The tables are so old they are considered retro now and the decor is so dated it was like sitting in an 80's lounge, you no the type with the chintzy stripped curtains and pelmets. The food was mediocre at best, my pigeon starter was so tuff I actually flipped my knife of my plate trying to cut it,no check back either. For mains myself and my dad had lamb cutlets again a throw back to the 80's, it came with funny little barrel shaped veggies that had no colour and no taste. My dad asked the waitress when we ordered "how many cutlets would there be" her reply "oh 3 or 4" actually there were just 2. A bit of knowledge goes a long way.The cutlery we had was so old again I think it would now be called antiquated. Never once did anyone come and ask if everything was fine. To top it off the waitress with ginger hair started to clear the 3 plates That had finished before my dad Had finished eating. Very very poor service. Then When the mains were cleared the waitress left all our side plates from the starters and loads of unused cutlery all over the table, very messy and to think they were going to top up our wine well forget that right now. The real crux was when I ordered a floater coffee for my dad, I know it's old school but that's what he likes he is 67 after all. I did explain it was coffee with cream floating on the top, what arrived was a coffee in the glass with steamed milk yes steamed milk on the top. So what In fact they made was a really bad latte. Her excuse was " sorry it's not very good I couldn't get it to float" no wonder you couldn't love you used hot steamed milk instead of cream and no sugar so it's hardly surprising we got served a latte. The service in General was shockingly bad. The ginger haired waitress disappeared for nearly 20mins I'm guessing to eat and the other girl stood chatting to a couple for 15mins leaving no one to pay attention to the guests. The table next to us of 5 called her twice but she still ignored them and stood chatting. They eventually just left and went back to their rooms. When our bill arrived none of the food was itemised it was under "open food" on the bill with just an amount. So it was difficult for my guests to work out what their share was. The hotel is outdated, shabby and provides such shockingly poor service and attention to detail that watching paint dry would be quicker. The service was so slow In fact my mum compared it to Mrs Overall from acorn antiques. It's a dreadful place to eat and is so old fashioned and of Very low standard. I know privately owned hotels are normally pretty tired and left to decline but come on you need to do way better than this. I Would never recommend the hotel to anyone. After my 25 years in hospitality and as I was a managers at Michael Caines in Exeter and in some of London's top hotels and restaurants I know what service is and good quality food and this comes no where near. Who ever is the owner or manager You should be ashamed you allow your staff to govern themselves when they clearly need a lot of intensive training in basic service standards and need guidance from some one who is strong and capable.

Having had quite a few meals here in the past, my latest visit was very disapointing. The restaurant has always felt slightly like an old peoples home, but was made up for by the quality of the food and value for money. Since my last visit the set menu has gone. With mains at £15-£20 it just doesn't represent value for money and the food was okay, but just not up to scratch. Unusually we skipped desert as it all looked very stodgey. For a restaurant trying to be 'quality', it was a shame to see they were happy for the people at the next table to be sitting there in trainers and t-shirt.
