Service wasn't great, couldn't find any staff to order more drinks or get some gravy to warm the dinner up. In the end I went up to the bar, at which point I still had to wait for staff (I think the manager) to stop being angry at a booking form and look up to help. Luke warm Sunday roast, potatoes hard on the outside and dry inside (seemed like they had been sat for ages) Yorkshire puddings with a similar quality to Aunt Bessie's and a splash of gravy on top. If a pub wants to justify £19 to £25 for a roast + £6 for cauliflower cheese they need to be able to deliver on quality and service. Unfortunately they didn't on this occasion. Edit: Wife told me to put something nice, the dog was lovely 😬 and a beautifully decorated pub.

Sunday lunch - upscale prices for rather average food and service. It was just ok for us, and not good enough to make us want to return. Peculiar reaction at payment when I rounded the bill up, which amounted to about 7%, so below a standard tip, but something at least. Didn't say anything, but it was noted. (I wouldn't call an ironic sharp intake of breath and no word of thanks "appreciation")

What a difference a day makes. I had a meal last night, very good food, service, in a lovely pub/restaurant. I returned tonight, on the strength of last night's experience. Initially things went well, I was accommodated quickly, even though I had not made a reservation. Food was fair, service was not. I waited half an hour for dessert, tried to attract staff attention, and eventually gave up. I went to the bar, and asked the waitress to cancel the order. She said something about having problems. I said, had she checked on me, I would have ordered something else. She glared at me, and walked away. Another waitress asked if I wanted to pay my bill, which I did. She had the manners to apologise. The Ley Arms is priced on the higher side, the service should be high quality. It is not.

Stopped here for some lunch with a friend on a August Friday lunchtime. It's a large pub and wasn't too busy. The food was good - we had fish and chips - but was pricey for what it was at £18 (I think). There was also only a few chips served with it which was a bit disappointing. It was OK though and a nice quiet patio area to be able to sit outside. There is a large car park but limited options for parking bicycles where you could lock your bike securely, so could do with ssomething to encourage bike use.

The ley arms used to be mine and my partners go to place for a lovely dinner, since the continuous increase of price for the Friday night steak deal it only seems the quality of food has declined. Unfortunately this has put me and several others off. Also they always used to allow me and my partner to replace the alcoholic drinks with soft drinks, this is no longer the case as well. When queried, we was told the only way around it was to purchase said steak meal incl alcohol and further drinks for us to actually drink

A large place to eat as places go. So getting a table was not tricky. Unfortunately the service was poor, it seemed that there were no fixed tables for the staff to serve. This resulted in our pudding order and second drinks order going astray -which left is waiting and waiting and only after asking did the staff realize their error. And so they did remove the costs from the final bill... The food was okay a good selection of meat based dishes but my first choice has run out when ordering but not much choice of vegetarian options so do check their online menu to be sure it is worth going. The atmosphere was busy and friendly and the staff were truly apologetic for their error. An okay place to eat.

The roast was incredibly average for the price (£19 for a standard). Whilst portions were good, roast potatoes were not what anyone would call roast potatoes, but new potatoes heated to give the edges the tiniest wisp of crispiness. The seasonal vegetables (broccoli and courgette) were barely cooked and hard. Roast beef was thick, chewy and tough as old boots. Carrots and parsnips, whilst tasty, seemed straight out of a Tesco seasoned veg bag. The ‘giant pigs in blankets’ was a singular bacon-wrapped sausage cut into six pieces and placed in a small ramekin for £6. Sticky toffee pudding was okay, definitely not worth the price tag breaking £10. The cake was warm, but the surrounding caramel was cold (as if spooned on after heating). Ice cream was placed on a revolting, sawdust-like biscuit crumb that genuinely tasted of wood. What an absolute disappointment.

We were at my mother in laws 90th birthday meal with family & friends. Despite the sign stating all dogs must be on leads. One wasn't. I witnessed on two occasions a waitress trip carrying hot food over it. Sadly, due to its location, there is no wifi. The emergency services could not contact any of us when my father in law who was at home set off his fall alarm. That ended up with extended family from Bristol being called. So yes great food, livley decor. But can't ever go back with out an emergency responce link.

Unfortunately we did not enjoy our Sunday roast dinner; the potatoes were rock solid on the outside and super dry on the inside; the gravy was like water; the pork was very dry; they forgot to give us the included stuffing; the nutroast was a strange texture and personally we thought courgettes were a weird addition to a roast dinner! They also got our drinks order wrong and the service was really slow. It's a shame because the pub itself is really lovely in design but we had a very long journey so were very disappointed.

I had heard great things about the Ley Arms, and I was not disappointed. The exterior is attractive, the interior is atmospheric. The service with a smile was faultless, and the food was both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. A three course meal for two was over in a flash, helped by the professional service of the staff for both drinks and food. In what felt like no time we had our drinks and starters. Mains were quick to follow too. So quick we were impressed and worried the food may not be good, there was no need to worry. Clearly a well run kitchen, the food was top class. All done in 3-hrs, a pleasant experience from starter to dessert.

Visited Ley Arms for Sunday lunch today (21st April). A beautiful place, in a picturesque village. We had starters - mushrooms in blue cheese sauce on toast - absolutely delicious. We eagerly awaited our Sunday lunch. How disappointing. The potatoes were clearly not freshly cooked, but seemed to be reheated, being tough on the outside and dry and almost empty inside. The Yorkshire pudding, was very odd? It was very crispy and just snapped in your mouth. The lamb was disappointingly tasteless. For £19.50 for roast lamb dinner, I expected something far superior. I’m sorry, but we won’t be returning.

Five of us stopped by for lunch today. As always the service was great, friendly and attentive. Food for the most part was very good, albeit vegan/vegetarian options are limited and uninspiring. The mature cheese and chutney sandwich was very disappointing, there was no mention of tomato on the menu, yet the sandwich came with thick slices of tomato and a distinct lack of mature cheddar. Not what you'd expect for a £10 sandwich.

It's got a nice interior - an interesting vibe with dark blue paint and fairylights. The food was fine - a decent burger and chips. The prawn cocktail was a tenner, which seemed a bit expensive at first, but when it arrived it was generous with the prawns and had a couple of nice thick slices of smoked salmon. Personal taste, but for me, coleslaw with onions has no place in a prawn cocktail and it was a bit wet, but that's the only comment I'd make. Staff were helpful and friendly. A solid, pleasant experience - I'd recommend. 👌

Love this pub! We went last night, the food was excellent and the pub is so cosy. Only downside last night was the staff, I understand they were busy but the couldn't raise a smile whilst they took our order and served us, the one waitress was quite abrupt when I politely asked if my dessert was on the way (waited 3/4 of an hour), no apology....... I think they need more training in customer service. Despite this, we will be back, the food is fantastic, we had the pork which I highly recommend.

Lovely traditional country pub, wood fires, cosy seating area and a warm welcome. Special mention has to go to Naomi who looked after us on table 28 this evening. She was very friendly and incredibly professional, a credit to the establishment. We enjoyed the last tomahawk steak remaining in the kitchen which was served with a complimentary bottle of wine, thick cut 'proper' chips and we chose to add onion rings (a great addition, hand cut and very tasty) and the blue cheese sauce. Our meal was served by another waitress who upon delivering it to our table asked if we would like plates? An unusual question but I suppose there are people out there that would eat it directly off the wooden board it was served on 🤷🏼♂️ there were also no steak knives offered? Was this a mistake or is the chef that confident in their cooking ability they felt they weren't required?? Alas we were able to enjoy our meal using the usual table cutlery. Our only comment being the sauce was very thin and not very cheesy. Following our meal we opted for a dessert from the specials menu. A Jamaican ginger cake sundae with rum and raisin ice cream and fruit and nut chocolate brittle, stem ginger and Chantilly cream. Sounds delicious! After approximately 25-35 minutes this was delivered and unfortunately didn't match the wow factor our main course had. In fact I'd say it lacked everything and appeared to be a sundae glass with some fairly bland ice cream topped with a 99 style flake! Definitely not worth the wait. We bought these points up with Naomi who was very apologetic and removed the items that didn't meet their expectations from our bill. We were wished safe travels and bid farewell. In conclusion I'd say we left as happy customers despite the few minor issues encountered and are looking forward to returning. I have no doubt that should you choose to visit you would equally enjoy yourselves. Service: 5/5 | Location: 5/5 Hotel highlights Romantic, Quiet

Amazing traditional country pub. Very dark inside with lots off nooks and crannies for dinning. Staff where great except for the older lady possibly manager/owner with glasses pulled a face when I requested condiments for my sausage and mash. Sausage and mash Which was ok mash tasted a bit like packet mash. There own sausage recipe was ok good size banger. Prawn cocktail lacked mary rose sauce. Calamari starter I found boring. The hummus and crudités came out as a bread sharing platter olives hummus (which was very course with a lot of garlic. Which they left and went and got the crudités and hummus. Arrived with just crudités no Hummus.. Overall it was ok but for pub food it just lacked pub food vibes especially for the price. Definitely the better pub in the area.

Wow! This is a truly special pub. It’s really large inside with lots of nooks and crannies. The decor is very traditional and the atmosphere really cosy and relaxed. We visited on Saturday lunchtime to celebrate Mother’s Day. It was very busy and we were really impressed that the tables were laid out in quite a spacious way, rather than crammed in like so many other pubs do. We always look for dog friendly venues when dining out. Several dogs were visiting today including two of our own. All dogs present were impeccably behaved. I’m sad I didn’t get to meet Bertie the Pub Dog (hopefully next time). The staff were all friendly, polite and helpful. The food was fabulous. Most of us had Fish and Chips. The batter was crispy and perfectly cooked. Desserts were presented beautifully and also delicious. Our Mum’s were delighted with their day out. If we lived closer, we would be regulars!! We will be booking up again soon for sure.

We visited this pub for an evening meal prior to a large family get together planned for March. Externally, when my wife and I arrived, liked the look of the place. This however proved to be to high point of the evening. On entering, I was disappointed by the temperature, not cold but not warm enough to feel comfortable. I had been informed prior to our visit that it was top end for a pub restaurant and therefore I was expecting a more inviting and professional table dressing, but all we got was knife and fork on a paper napkin, salt & pepper pots and menu/wine list The lighting was inadequate and I had to use my phone torch to read the menu. Seating was of a minimum standard, not good enough for a long meal. The staff where variable, one disinterested, the young lady however tried hard to be pleasant and helpful. Overall the food was just ok, my steak was tough, lacking flavour and taste, my wife's fish was not the best. We declined a sweet or pudding and left, both in agreement that this was a one off occasion and was not the venue for us.

Stopped off for a Sunday Lunch after a dog walk at Dawlish. We've been here a few times before and the food is very good, literally can't fault it. However...... the service on this Sunday afternoon was very ordinary. The restaurant wasn't busy, but the staff treated us as though we were invisible. I went to ask for a menu and a lady walked past me with three in her hand and said "wait a minute". No problem. I got two menus. Fifteen minutes later I flagged a waitress down to take our order. 40 minutes later our food arrived.I feel like this is quite a long wait for a fairly pricey Sunday lunch. Now, as I said, the lunch was really good, but I do have a gripe - £5 extra for Pigs in Blankets, (not enough of them for a family of 3) and £5 extra for Cauliflower Cheese, (not enough for a family of three). Our meal for three adults with one soft drink each came to £79, which I don't think is cheap for a roast dinner. I don't mind paying if the food and service is good, but on this occasion I don't think the service was up to scratch. Hopefully it was just an off-day.

I liked the idea of a small portion size which was perfect for us although to add extras such as cauliflower cheese would have added £5 each. We declined puddings when we saw they were asking £9.50 for basic puds like sticky toffee etc. the serving staff were excellent and couldn’t have been more helpful and the pub was packed so clearly lots of people like the atmosphere here. Ordered A roast beef lunch£18. Beef was so tough I asked for a sharper knife, which I was given. Extras such as cauliflower cheese were £5. Premier prices for mediocre food.

First visit for a Sunday lunch, very nice it was too. Liked the idea of a smaller portion size which suited my wife. Well kept local ales available. Cosy atmosphere with log fires . Oh and tempting puds.

We absolutely loved this pub. Delicious food a cut above your average pub meal, very friendly staff, and a special atmosphere that’s been made thanks to a great deal of care and attention to the details.

Excellent food, but 18 quid for Sunday lunch plus 5 for cauliflower cheese and 5 for pigs in blankets is alot of cash for Sunday lunch....71 quid for 1 starter, 2 dinners and 2 drinks each is little bit of a rip off..so only 4 stars...

I love this pub as its so oldy worldy! Lots of places to sit, lots of different areas to choose from, really cosy and always decorated wonderfully. Good selection of food at reasonable prices with good portions. 👍🏼

Nice pub, food nice but rather expensive for a pub. Strange bubble and squeek: potato and carrot! With rocket on the side.

We both had a small fish and chips which was huge and only £13 per portion so excellent value for money, good service and atmosphere, nice food, friendly, loved the dogs! Interesting varied menu. Relaxed environment.

Table of 6 for the Sunday Carvery, overpriced and were disappointed with the standard of the meat, both the lamb at £19.50 and beef at £18.00 were over cooked and a bit tough, the whole meal was not that hot, so obviously the food had been sitting around before being plated. You had to pay extra for a small dish of cauliflower cheese at £5.00, what a rip off, for the price of the carvery why wasn't it included. To be honest it was just as though the meat had been cooked earlier in the morning, or even the day before and reheated, it was the same of the roast potatoes, they had the taste of being reheated..... such a shame. The sweets, although very nice, were very over priced. at £9.50 We will not be going back for the Sunday lunch and would not recommend. On a good note, the staff were very friendly and attentive and the actual pub was lovey.

I had been to The Ley Arms a few years ago and loved it, so booked dinner here with friends who were visiting this weekend. The atmosphere was very nice, lots of fairy lights, lovely decor etc - but the food was very underwhelming. The patè starter was small and came with bog standard sliced brown bread like you'd get in a supermarket rather than anything special, and the arancini balls starter didn't really taste of anything much. At £9.50 each for starters, we expected something a bit more than this. The pork belly main course wasn't 'melt in your mouth' as it should be, it was OK but tasted more like it was out of a packet. The beef main course again tasted OK, but was basically a casserole with small cubes of meat - not quite what I expexted from the menu's description. Overall the food was fine, but very overpriced and all 4 of us felt we could have cooked something tastier at home unfortunately. Nobody came to take our payment so eventually we went up to the bar to pay the bill and the staff member asked if everything had been OK. We gave polite but honest feedback and rather than just saying 'sorry you didn't really enjoy your meal', she said things like 'well I had that dish for lunch and it was delicious' and 'we've sold 30 of those today and had no other complaints'. We won't be returning for food unfortunately.

I have to say this lovely 12 century pub, has to be the cleanest pub I've been into for a while. The staff were all really helpful . The veggie nut roast was the best I've had in Devon, not just a mush but more like your traditional nut roast. We were a group of 8 all meals came out at the same time piping hot. Fabulous, thank you.

Used to be a good chippy but since it’s been taken over I have to say worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Soggy batter and the smallest “large” portion of chips I’ve ever seen.

We went as a family of 8 and all had a lovely meal. Very good traditional food. Pub grub done well. The chips were very nice. I can definitely recommend the steak and ale pie and fish and chips. Others in our party had the gammon which also looked delicious and the steak. Very cosy inside and friendly service. They were helpful with my partner's nut allergy. Plenty of free car parking. We will definitely try again.

Went here for sunday roast yesterday, waited ages for our food and when it arrived it was lukewarm , the meat was cold the carrots and broccoli were uncooked and cold fortunately the gravy was hot ,my husband had roast pork which came in one lump plonked on the top of his vegetables like a huge chop, also cold , very noisy due to over crowded room , high price for mediocre meal !

Rainy day, no menu visible from outside so we went in. Whilst the server was busy chatting we looked at the big board, but there were limited offerings for lunch so when she turned her attention to us, I asked if this was everything they offered (thinking there might be a written menu as well or something). She told me, fairly rudely, that that was everything they did and if we wanted something else we could go somewhere else, "not that I am trying to get rid of you.. ha ha", And so we did just that. Cant tell you what the food was like, but we did have a very nice lunch elsewhere!
