Disappointing and potentially overrated. The starters seemed like they had been out for a while, with dried-out leaves and slimy lettuce, offering nothing special. The main course was equally underwhelming: a dried-out duck that resembled something from a cheap Chinese restaurant best suited to pancakes and Hoisin sauce, and a fish that had more roe sacs than meat—quite unusual as I thought it was customary to remove roe from cooked fish. Of the three "Roast Potatoes" on my dish - they were supposed to be roast potatoes - only one was properly roasted; another was smaller, undercooked, and the potato was not soft, while the third was a tiny boiled potato - showing a lack of care and is the reason I felt I wanted to review. Simple things that could have made a nicer experience were overlooked. The wine and beer were satisfactory. One of us, who works as a catering manager, noticed that our table was completely blocking the fire exit, a clear fire code violation. Additionally, we were seated next to someone who constantly cleared his throat every 30 seconds for the first hour, which was extremely annoying for everyone nearby—though this is somewhat outside the control of the management, it did affect our experience. We only recently moved to the area but this is one less local venue we'll likely ever visit again.

We ate at The Linny twice whilst on holiday in the same village. We had seen mixed reviews but we had two very pleasant meals. Staff was very efficient and helpful, food was good and the atmosphere was great (no background music). It is not the cheapest but it is not that expensive either. A good selection of beers and wines, including a range of wine by the glass at reasonable prices. The roast on Sunday was excellent and good value. I would definitely go again.

We were seated promptly, our order taken, drinks delivered, food delivered promptly even though they were packed out. The food was superb, the roast beef was perfection. It was recommended as the best place to eat and it certainly lived up to it reputation. The price of the Sunday roast was exceptionally reasonable. No faults or complaints about any aspect of our experience, it was as close to perfect as is possible.

Had a great time, food very enjoyable, and a great menu, and remember to ask for specials. Also, book early, I recommend upstairs as more relaxed, in my opinion. We were 4 but I noted even larger tables were all served together. House wine not cheap but very enjoyable, as the driver, I had little so must enjoy what I had. The table is yours for the evening, no urgency for extra covers. Mobility, upstairs there is a toilet and the stairs although long are comfortable, but downstairs access ok but I think a wheelchair would have some difficulty on a busy night. Just a note if wheelchair user, the car park is very steep in places..

We been twice before. This time the service and not knowing what was included with our meal let our last visit down. The waitress only ask once what we wanted for vegetables. She did not ask induvidualy. Also food was not really hot. No one really welcomed us as we came into the pub. Waitresses stood round by bar chatting. Pudding menue did not make clear what came with it, bread and butter pudding with ice cream or custard? Shame, nice pub but service is letting the cook and his good food down.

Absolutely terrible attitude of waiter who showed us to our table only for us to be outrun by another couple who blatantly sat there whilst we were en route. Waiter didn’t care and sat us at a table near the busy door instead when I’d specifically asked for a quiet table when I booked months before. When we asked to sit elsewhere, he said if we didn’t like it we could leave! We had no choice but to stay as we’d arrived by taxi, it was Saturday night so unlikely to get a booking anywhere else at short notice and it was a birthday celebration, and he knew it. Cocky, arrogant, disgraceful, no customer service, obviously this behaviour is condoned by management who, from reading previous reviews now, are just as bad! Wish I’d read the bad reviews as well as the good before booking! Food took forever was mediocre and overpriced. A matter of time before this place folds, as obviously relying on elderly regulars. Don’t waste your time or money - go to the Barn Owl instead who know what hospitality is.

The buildings and layout are chocolate-box Devon. Booking system good. You arrive at a pub. There once were people at the bar having a drink in the only pub in the village. The bar is empty, tables are busy. The staff smile and know everyone. We approached the "Front of house" who almost shouted at us requesting a booking. The opening greeting from the person leading reception was as harsh and barked as a seargent's order. we sheepishly went our table. The ordering followed a similar process as we were taken through the process. She stomped up and interrupted all conversation with the next spur to propel us though as fast as possible. She reminded me of "Lotte Von Hildschtein" in "Every home should have one" or Helga from "ello elllo" The food ah! There seems to be a two stage menu here with "Denture-friendly" stuff at about $17 a plate (Fish pie and steak n ale pie) and good fo eat stuff like skate wing and whole plaice. Don't get me wrong, the venue is lovely, the food here is good, the main problems as I see it is that there is a solid group of reliable local diners eating canteen food every day. There is also an icing on the cake from local foodies and visitors who eat the top end stuff at around £27-30+ a plate. The bill does mount up quickly!! restraunteur heaven!! My only criticism is that the staff treat anyone who isn't local as an irritating inconvenience they wish to process ASAP. Overall, this is a good eatery in the process of losing its way. Someone has built a great setup and is currently retired or asleep at the wheel. Shame Change the senior staff and I will be back. Chef is good. We went a long way to eat here and it was nearly worth it....

Really expensive for average quality, it was a truly great place not long ago. "Would you like water for the table?" translated to here are two opened £5 bottles of spring water! Don't presume, like we did that they'll bring you a couple of carafes of chilled tap water... Ouch! Vegi stroganoff tasted fine, but it was not filling. Roast beef a bit chewy. Kids portions were fine for toddlers up to maybe age 5 but very stingy size for £8 for 8 and 10 yr olds, peas were the only vegetable accoutrement for their bland looking plates. Myriad times the rather curt waitress asked "any more drinks?", hoping maybe to get commission on more overpriced posh water? Going out to a posh pub for dinner with my family, I want to be wowed by the food, get served by welcoming staff. We skipped deserts at £9 a pop for things like ginger pudding... If it were delivered along the village stream on the back of swan for that price, then fair enough. Go and enjoy if you have deep pockets, and the appetite of a sparrow.

Table of 3 booked for 6.30, tried entering at 6 for pre meal drink, no chance, closed till 6.30! Ordered meal, 40 minutes later parts of meal arrived and the 5 minutes later the rest arrives. Our dinner companion ordered a roast turkey, apparently comes with roast potatoes, no roast and boiled ! My wife and I ordered a steak, lucky we were wearing trainers as we would have soled our shoes with the toughest piece of beef ever encountered. My wife also ordered cauliflower cheese, do not ever order this, it was absolutely vile. I asked for a glass of Cabernet, not sold by the glass but £60 a bottle! Forgetting all the downs, it was a sheer delight to pay the prices for frozen chips and onion rings. Why can’t these dining places peel a spud. To top it all, the man who I guess was the proprietor was dressed in Nike jogging trainers and a sweatshirt, his partner had made an effort and looked professional. Please learn from your partner! I will never frequent this establishment again as I did not feel valued as a customer and the attire of the proprietor said exactly the same. Food was below average and I do appreciate being served frozen products that people at home use all the time

Great atmosphere, fantastic staff, amazing food. Busy, definitely need to book, and the one criticism is we felt maybe they'd squeezed in one table too many, but it wasn't a problem. Our server was in that rare breed, certainly for a pub - perceptive and aware, yet discreet. Timing was spot on - when we were actually ready to order there she was, there was just the right gap between courses, etc. It was more than coincidence - it's something that's hard to get right and she got it spot on, whilst managing to appear that she was genuinely enjoying her job. Excellent vegan and vegetarian options, huge range of fish, plus everything else too. Traditional thatched pub done right, as borne out by reviews and popularity.

Thank you “the Linny” coffinswell I haven’t been for managing years - I used to love the place but life takes over sometimes - but our revisit was very overdue and VERY worth making We try to have a roast on a Sunday but we are often busy during the day and so like to eat in the evening Soooo many places stop serving by 8 and from experience even if you get there by 7:30 you are rushed and made to feel uncomfortable Carveries are too often the remnants that have stood around for a while. And non carveries are variable at best - all too often you can’t even get a roast as they have unexpectedly sold out - again!! We have even experienced one where after mains we weren’t offered deserts and the staff stood behind the bar chatting and ignoring us But the Linny take bookings up till 9 pm - and when we phoned to enquire they were very helpful and welcoming. This continued when we arrived at about 8:00 - amazing attentive but not pushy service, weren’t made to feel we had to rush and were offered deserts, coffee and allowed to take as long as we wanted The food was fab - great choice of roasts - my lamb was gorg and Clive enjoyed his turkey - lovely roasties and nice selection of veg. And the Desserts - salted caramel brownie for Clive and brioche bread and butter pud with a lovely caramelised crust - were a delight Suffice to say the place was still buzzing and serving happy dinners when we left at about 9:30. lots of birthday family groups as well as couples and friends We will def be back again and again and again Lovely atmosphere. (8 minutes by car) There is a paid parking lot (£1.90 for 2 hours) opposite the cafe, but coins are the only option, so if you want to pay by card, grab the cafe's wifi (no password) and use Ringgo. You can pay through the app. It's a soft, crumbly style scone, and it's large so you can eat one per person. Only the cream tea set (tea + scone + jam/cream) is listed on the menu, but you can also order the scone alone (jam/cream costs extra). It doesn't taste amazing, but the staff is friendly and it's easy to enjoy.
