Super cute village and lovely quaint pub from the outside - but dinner was very average. Mains were about £15 each. The three of us had ham, egg and chips; pan fried hake; and a burger. It was all OK but the same pub grub you can get anywhere. Nothing special. Shame, as we'd heard really good things about The Cleave. Maybe just not as good as it used to be.

A couple of weeks ago I called here just before closing time after visiting the fascinating Kelly Mine which is nearby. I had a brief chat with the friendly Landlord while I finished my pint. I enjoyed my visit to the pub. Yesterday on a sunny September day me and my partner walked from Parke NT up to the Cleave Inn where we we received a friendly welcome. We each enjoyed a lovely warming soup before a walk along quiet lanes back to Parke. A great day out.

Party of 6 (over 60s ) popped into the Cleave for a few drinks having visited a local museum. We spoke to a male employer (suspected manager as he did not introduce himself) about sitting at a table marked "Reserved" & he agreed it was OK until 15mins before the other customers arrived, At the agreed time we all moved from the table & went to order more drinks. We were refused service & told we all were barred, this was done in a very rude manner!!! The average age of our party was 68! It was the first time we have been Barred from any Pub/Drinking establishment (I having served in the Armed Forces for over 20+ years), It felt like quite an achievement! I have since learnt it is not an uncommon event at this pub, needles to say, none of us will be wanting to return & will pass on our experience to other locals!

Should have been lovely as great location.. but... the bloke, who I not sure, may be the manager/landlord should sack himself for his outrageously rude attitude when we sat at a table that was reserved already knowing that we would move when nessesary, he came over and basically told us off for sitting there. We were a group of six. We offered to move tables but he told us we could stay for a further 5 minutes, we moved seats and went to the bar to order another round and he refused to serve... shame as we are are local and would maybe have supported them through the winter months... but not now. Beware, he can spoil an event.

The Cleave is a reasonably regular stop for us with the dogs for lunch. This time we took friends who had never been before and we weren’t disappointed. We had booked a table and were thoughtfully seated in the garden on the grass and in the shade. The. Landlord and Landlady were pleasant and accommodating as ever with swift service at the bar. Food ordered and we received it in a timely manner, all home cooked and of excellent quality and well presented. The dogs received gravy bones as well. All in all a very pleasant experience and we will return.

We booked a table outside for four adults and 3 dogs. When we arrived we were met with an extremely warm and friendly welcome and shown to our table which thoughtfully, was in the shade in the beautiful garden. We were provided with a bowl of water for the dogs along with some snacks for them too. The service was very friendly and the choices of both the menu and the special board was wide and varied. The food arrived in a perfect time frame and was absolutely delicious. The portions are extremely generous too. Can’t wait to come down this way again so we can come for another visit. Thank you.

Generous portions of tender roast meat with large homemade yorkys, very tasty veg and 4 large roast potatoes, with extra jugs of gravy brought to the table automatically! Which was very welcome. A relaxed affair with attentive, friendly staff. Home made delicious desserts where of a generous size too. All very reasonably priced considering the size and great quality of the meals. Run by a young, friendly couple, this is a simply lovely pub with excellent beers, amazing food and really good cheer. The four of us plus dog arrived at lunchtime after a long walk, there were already a few cheery locals with ruddy cheeks who beamed at us over their pints. We we had a table by the window overlooking a garden that had obviously seen lots of Devon rain and sunshine - very lovely and green. We drank loads of real ale and wine and were also tempted by the delicious Fanny’s cider. We ordered a massive lunch, freshly prepared by the chef, Matt, who is clearly a perfectionist. I had the fishcakes - honestly mate they’re like creme brulée - you crack open the fried breaded outer layer with your fork and there’s all this creamy chilli fresh fish stuff inside. Yum. We stayed there well beyond our welcome, for 3 hours, just laughing and eating and drinking, then waddled back to our cottage. What a stupendous afternoon. Thank you Carlotte and Steve for their joyous hospitality and generous humour.

Called in quite by chance whilst on a break within Dartmoor National Park. What a gem to discover! Genuine 'Olde Worlde' building set amongst others in a truly picturesque village. Pub has two bars/dining areas - one larger with an open fire and more akin to a dining room, the other small cosy and despite natural granite walls it was kept warm by an effective wood burner. Further warmed by a happy helpful welcome from all staff, good selection of beers including local ales. Cheering atmosphere was increased by chatty local patrons playing the mysterious card game Euchre (familiar to us North Cornwall dwellers but I still don't quite grasp the rules!). A surprisingly varied menu available on an out-of-season Wednesday evening enticed us to stay for dinner and we are glad to have done so - chicken and leek pie utterly scrumptious and filling a healthy male appetite, plus gnocchi equally delicious for my partner. Scrupulously clean toilets too - always a mark of standards and customer care especially in a place serving food I believe. PS - limited parking means you might get blocked in by a Volvo driver who gets grouchy when he's asked to let you out, but hey, we were content to see a Mercedes pull into 'his' space as we left! Couldn't fault the place. Didn't want to leave. Will certainly be back.

We wished we'd found the Cleave Inn on the first night of our holiday rather than the last. We only dropped in for a drink but ended up staying for a delicious meal. The atmosphere was heartwarming, as we relaxed with our drinks the locals gathered for food, banter and Eucha! Everybody, including us, was greeted warmly and with humour. It's such a shame that our visit was tainted by the person who blocked my very old Honda in with his very new Volvo! The chap didn't even have the decency to apologise. After staff alerted him, he barged past me & marched through the hall to the front door, bearly hesitating to hold the front door as I followed. I really hope the Mercedes that slid into the space left by my old banger did not incur the wrath of Mr Volvo!

We were greeted by a snarling pit type dog in a worryingly loose muzzle in the front bar, and then pointed in the direction of an unheated room at the back, with great views of fag butts bobbing around in rainfilled ash trays outside the window, as we hadn't booked and there was no room for lunch, just a drink ( fair enough). Unengaged staff, cold dismal interior. What a shame for such a lovely village as Lustleigh.

We were very happy to find this old world English pub for lunch. However we were soon to be disappointed. We were told that even though there was a table that easily sat four of us we couldn’t eat lunch there. We were shown into...

We enjoyed our lunch very much. The beef lasagne was fabulous and was clearly homemade. Service was excellent and overall tremendous value for money. I’d recommend to anyone

Absolutely excellent food and service. The worst part is the roads that lead to it, but if you can suffer that, then treat yourselves and go!

Wonderful pub in a beautiful setting. Had a lunchtime snack, chicken & bacon baguette with a portion of chips. Bread, chicken and baguette were excellent supported by a side salad, probably the freshest I’ve ever had and quite simply the most amazing chips, just perfect....

Following a family recommendation to visit The Cleave during our trip to Devon we were amazed at what a great find it was! Total village atmosphere with superb food served on the lawn in front of the pub by friendly knowledgeable staff. The choice of...

Since we moved our roving group trail run from Thursdays to Tuesdays our pub experience has been mixed to say the least. Some pubs aren't even open, some have sent the chef home early and can only offer crisps and some seem like they can't...

Steve, Charlotte and the staff are very welcoming and will make your visit a pleasure. The food is excellent and they are extremely accommodating for gluten free requirements. All three rooms are characterful and clean in this 15th century building. The walled garden is also...

Stayed in Lustleigh for a few days and had dinner on two separate days here as the food and staff were so brilliant and very friendly. Definitely would recommend.

If I could give 6 stars I would. This place was amazing in ambiance, hospitality of the owner/barman and the exquisite, fresh food. All cooked to order so be prepared to wait (which is well worth it).

Went here for sunday roast yesterday, waited ages for our food and when it arrived it was lukewarm , the meat was cold the carrots and broccoli were uncooked and cold fortunately the gravy was hot ,my husband had roast pork which came in one lump plonked on the top of his vegetables like a huge chop, also cold , very noisy due to over crowded room , high price for mediocre meal !

Used to be a good chippy but since it’s been taken over I have to say worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Soggy batter and the smallest “large” portion of chips I’ve ever seen.

We went as a family of 8 and all had a lovely meal. Very good traditional food. Pub grub done well. The chips were very nice. I can definitely recommend the steak and ale pie and fish and chips. Others in our party had the gammon which also looked delicious and the steak. Very cosy inside and friendly service. They were helpful with my partner's nut allergy. Plenty of free car parking. We will definitely try again.

We went in because we urged to by Nigel from the bookshop (no 69, which we also highly recommend) We had a proper pasty, with faultlessly cooked veg, and the right amount of perfectly peppered beef skirt. The crimping was a creation of Cornish cuteness. My friend chose a diabetes inducing (which was what she was after!😂) lovely Mars Bar cake. Sally makes it all herself, and there was not anything that didn't look gorgeous. Sally was warm and friendly, welcomed us in, and made a point to say thank you and goodbye and wish us a good rest of our day. We left, sated, warm and happy.
