This had to be the worst carvery we have ever eaten. The beef was full of gristle and chewy, the red cabbage was like soup and full of cinnamon, the cauliflower tasted sour. I would definitely avoid

Well, after going past the sign to The Swans Nest on many times going from M5 to Dawlish, we decided to book for Sunday evening, and have to say that we will definitely be back. I had the prawn salad as a starter and was surprised how big it was and it had loads of prawns on it, it was top notch. My partner had the carvery and I had the gammon of the menu. My partner said the carvery was absolutely beautiful, she had turkey and said how succulent it was, and all the veggies were hot and well cooked. The gammon was lovely, cooked perfectly, and came with egg & pineapple, chips and peas. The gammon was also very large and even I had to leave a small piece. Our puddings were very nice, my partner had the ice cream, I wanted the spotted dick but it had sold out, so I had the treacle pudding and the obligatory custaard. It was superb. We will now use the Swans Nest every time we are down that way

Stopped for two nights in our motorhome. Lovely big car park and we tucked ourselves in a corner..field/ cows over hedge. Had Friday meal and Sunday carvery. Food good pub grub. Excellent carvery. Very quiet overnight. Felt very safe. 10 min walk into village with Tesco Express. Easy walk to canal and Exe estuary. Gave it 4* as staff didn't mention "specials board".

I am really shocked that this cost so much money as the food was so poor. The beef was very fatty, making it difficult to chew. The stuffing was soggy, and I definitely had not been in the oven. Brocolli was hard and cold. Still hungry, we decided to order dessert. My daughter described her chocolate cake to taste like a cupboard! The service was disorganised and messy, but the staff were all polite and pleasant enough.

The carvery was very dry and bland. It was one of the worst we’ve ever eaten. I don’t understand curried veg with gravy. My granddaughter got the chicken nuggets 4 and a handful of chips for £8.50 which is way overpriced. We’ve eaten there before but won’t be going back. Absolutely awful and overpriced

We visited the restaurant on Mother's Day with our family. Upon arrival, the waiting staff took our drink orders, but they seemed unsure about the available drinks. When we looked at the menu, six of us decided to have the carvery, while one person opted for a vegetable curry. The menu stated that the carvery came with only two slices of meat, which we found to be rather limited. The carvery itself was satisfactory, but nothing exceptional. However, we were deeply concerned when one of our party discovered sharp pieces of plastic in their food. We immediately called for the manager, who expressed surprise and assured us that they store all their food in tableware, so they were unsure how this could have happened. He later returned to inform us that the curry was brought in and not part of their ingredients. In our opinion, the plastic pieces resembled sharp edges of a microwave meal container. The manager offered to provide the affected meal free of charge, which we found to be an inadequate response considering the meal was untouched. He also offered a free dessert, but there was no offer to replace the meal. We regret to say that our experience at the restaurant was not up to par, and we feel compelled to share our concerns through this review.

Popped in today whilst passing as we fancied a roast dinner on our journey, walked in to a very cold pub, fire was barely lit, had to wear my coat whilst eating our very poor carvery, we both had the beef which was so dry and overcooked, the cauliflower cheese was tasteless and the suede was disgusting, roast potatoes were not well roasted, does your chef here actually try his food. All in all a very bad experience and £50 for 2 carvery’s and soft drinks I expect a lot better.

Group of friends visited mid week after walking around the marshes, restaurant was quiet but still offered a full carvery, ate turkey plus pork and a plate full of pots and veg, meat a little dry but rest good. It is a large pub with lots of rooms, looks v tired inside and not a great atmosphere. So overall food was good but pub needs lots of work to make it a pleasant place to eat.

We popped in on the off chance for Sunday lunch and they fitted us in which was great Having worked in a horrendously busy carvery myself I can appreciate how much pressure they were under But… We waited a while to order drink’s fortunately the chap seating noticed we’d not been seen to so prompted the serving staff we ordered 2 carvery’s and our drinks We went straight up to get our meals We noticed immediately that yesterday’s joints of beef (along with a fresh joint) and pork were out again as were the spuds. The spuds were extremely dry and tasted reheated The veg was a nice selection but the cauliflower cheese looked less than freshly cooked The building needs serious updating inside and out very dated decor and fittings Overall the impression was chaotic and poorly organised which was a shame I think with some investment and staff training this could get back to it’s heyday

When you are paying £15 for a carvery you expect it to be really good. The meat was nice but the undercooked frozen vegetables not so. Potato’s carrots and parsnips hard and undercooked, Runner beans from the wholesalers! Also charged £4 for a baby’s bowl! £4!!!! She literally had 2 runner beans and a couple of carrots! Never been anywhere they have charged for a baby! Not only that but £5.90 for a pint of Carlsberg is daylight robbery! You are not even paying for the atmosphere or ambience as the place is so outdated and dirty in place! Absolute rip off won’t be returning! We went as a family of 4, one had the carvery, and had said the meat was lovely but the potatoes was very dry and the veg was undercooked. For myself And another family member our meals was disgusting, it was all over cooked and the fish had been fried in old oil, and so over done there wasn’t much fish at all within the batter. The halloumi was completely over cooked you couldn’t even taste that it was halloumi. And the chicken burger was so small and dry. This restaurant has been taken over and for years we have been going there for family occasions and will definitely not be going back the food was horrible. Terrible meal. Steak burger just your bog standard burger from the wholesalers, not a high quality burger it suggests and misleads the staff - even our server admitted it wasn’t what it described. Chips and onion rings swimming in oil. Staff messing about behind the counter and eating deserts off the tray with their hands - no gloves or PPE worn and messing around behind the counter and behaving in an extremely unprofessional way. Staff willingly slagging table off within earshot. Manager won’t accept that a frozen burger from wholesaler shouldn’t be described as a steak burger. Won’t be returning.

We already loved this pub for its amazing interior and its sweet beer garden, and thought the food menu was pretty good too. This time, we tried the carvery. Being vegetarians or vegans, we were a bit doubtful, but I have to say that I ended up with the best pub meal I can ever remember having. It wasn't just my nut loaf that was delicious - all the accompaniments were so expertly prepared, and there were so many of them. And there was even a special vegan gravy. We were totally delighted.

When you have a party of 12, made up of three generations what sort of place do you choose for lunch? A couple of places we tried just didn't want to know, but we found The Swans Nest and they welcomed us with open arms. No problem to look after us and our varied needs which not only included young grandchildren, but hungry teenagers. The Swans Nest does a daily carvery which fitted the bill for most of our party, although there was a good "pub grub" selection as well. Prices were reasonable and the service from the young team was most attentive. The family run eatery does what it says on the tin. We would certainly use them again if down in that part of the world.

Really dissapointing experience from what used to be a lovely restaurant. We used to eat here alot and the carvery was always nice however our visit on Sunday for our mother's birthday was utter shocking. We were seated within the restaurant pretty swiftly and drinks come over in rapid speed. We qued for our food and sat down, shortly after sitting down those who had beef noticed how tough it was to the point it was almost not edible so we all left it. We had to wait forever to get a waitress attention to get another drink despite them happy to clear tables around us and us asking them but being ignored. I myself had to twice walk to the bar to ask for drinks.Once we had finished our meals we had to walk to the dessert counter to pick our pudding yet nobody came to clear our plates or even ask if we wanted pudding it was only when my wife went back to the bar to order them. When they came over they still hadn't cleared the plates and dumped the pudding at the end of the table and walked off.We asked THREE times for the bill which never came to the point we were ready to walk out but morally this wasn't right so we again went to tye bar where I advised the barmaid about the dreadful service who didn't seem bothered what so ever. This is where the fun begun it took us over 20 minutes to pay for the bill as none of the staff knew where the card machines where and when they did find them they didn't work. The restaurant wasn't busy and there were more than enough staff on to cover but there was no leadership and was utter chaos.

I love this place! My friend and I had planned to eat at the Turf Hotel, but we felt very uncomfortable when we arrived there, and left without ordering food or drink. We had passed the Swans Nest during our journey, so decided to go there and give it a try. I'm so glad we did. It's a real, old-fashioned country pub with lovely furniture and great food. My friend is Vegan, so we were very pleased that they offered a Vegan carvery, as well as several meats. We couldn't understand why the pub wasn't full of people on a Friday evening. Really disappointing... everything seemed really disjointed and unorganised. My other half ordered a drink but I didn’t know what I wanted and so the waitress just walked off... then we ordered our food and I asked what trimmings the steak came with... the waitress didn’t know and ermmm’d and ahhh’d... I said it was fine but if there was any raw onion in the salad I’d go without (I have Crohn’s disease and it makes me really ill if I eat raw onion) she said she’d check and let us know... also asked what wines there were, again, she didn’t know but did go and get the wine list for us! None of this is her fault at all as she was perfectly lovely but it’s a total lack of training on the managements part which is not fair on her as a member of staff! We ordered water also which never arrived... minor but pretty annoying never the less! Starter was lovely. Once that was cleared we waited about 40 odd minutes for our main but hadn’t been told there was a wait on food... it didn’t seem particularly busy either... once it turned up we were disappointed! My partner ordered the scampi which was sparse to say the least... he had about 5 pieces of a scampi... a smattering of chips too... my steak wasn’t seasoned, was barely warm, medium not medium rare, tough and the meal turned up with a salad that had raw onion in it... whilst I know it’s not an allergen, I did make it known that I couldn’t eat it when ordering the meal... although, really, someone should be asking every booking/table if there are any allergies or food intolerances they need to know about... duty of care to the customer and all that! I do have 20 years experience in the industry having run my own pubs/hotels... so I do know what I’m talking about to some degree! We received no check back and when the waitress asked how the meal was on clearing the table with most of the steak left on my plate (I persevered as much as I could! It was £18!!) I made a point of saying “hmmmm it was ok I guess” which wasn’t even acknowledged. It took a while for us to be able to ask for the bill. I paid cash but didn’t really leave a tip which I always feel guilty for but I just couldn’t!Really really disappointing... another note to make... please make sure that your waitresses wear skirts that cover them a bit more... as much as she was a beautiful girl and looked fantastic (although not food service/work appropriate!) she really should have been wearing a skirt that was longer... it was barely covering her bottom... and was soooooo inappropriate for work... maybe I’m getting old and jealous at 35 but it really was just not right for a work place and especially serving food.Your management need more focus on staff training and standards... in all areas it would seem. Fine, the meal was only £60 but I’d still expect a certain level in all areas!

The swans nest is always my top choice when we are going out for a roast. From the welcoming manner of the manager to the choices on the dessert counter (my favourite). I saw the negative comments on Facebook but I have to say that the chef and the manager could not be any harder working, at the beginning of lockdown we had a drive thru carvery which was lovely to keep us going during a very weird time! Go to the swans nest, my only advise is to call before to make sure they can get you in - I saw that they now have less tables and to check the dessert counter before you stack your plate !!

Went for a late lunch here with my partner and 2 year old son while eating our meal we heard a argument between the head chef and a big table to which he was swearing and being very angry in front of children and the whole pub. He come round the corner then swearing right by son the way he was speaking about the lady in the group was so disgusting and so unprofessional and to know he owns the pub with his partner who was very apologetic is the reason I will never go back. Poorly run to be shouting and swearing in front of the whole restaurant, will never be going back and will never recommended. The apology didn’t come close to making it ok for what he did as he then went on to posting horrible comments on social media about the family very poor.

This is prompted by the review August 2020 about the antics of the head chef and the carvery. We moved to the area last September and having previously enjoyed excellent meals (albeit 50 years ago), we were so disappointed. The food is nowhere near up to standard and the carver atrocious. The best part was the scone, jam and cream which we took to eat at home.

I can’t explain how disappointed I am with what I have just witnessed I have traveled 300 miles to celebrate my nieces birth with a nice meal with my family at the swans nest in Exminster to be spoken to like absolute dirt to be sworn at by the HEAD CHEF in front of a lot of children because we questioned a few things on the bill for example £8.00 for small wine spritzer and £5.25 for coleslaw.

Nothing good I'm afraid. When everywhere else full due to Gov scheme the fact that it was really quiet should have been a warning in itself.Food poor quality. Tasteless and chips undercooked and greasy. Homemade pizza was a frozen base with little cheese and tomato thrown on top, haloumi sticks (ridiculously priced) where spongy and powdery ..inedible. Girls serving were sweet but had to ask for sauces etc. they were a bit clueless.Offered our feedback at end thinking they may appreciate it as we are local but manager who was just stood at a quiet bar couldn't even be bothered to come over . This place was so very popular years ago. Shame at what it has become . Wont be returning any time soon!

Myself and my partner have recently moved to Exminster and having tried the carvery we wanted to sample the dinner menu.I had a Thai red curry and it was one of the best I have ever tasted. The service was really warm and attentive and we felt really looked after. We also loved the beer garden with lovely views of the country side. A couple of teeny points is that my white wine wasn't overly cold. The second, my partner ordered a homemade pizza which was lovely, but weren't keen on the pizza base. The carvery meat pizza topping was really nice though! Apart from that we loved it and will be back with friends soon!

My partner and I went for a lovely Sunday Roast today. Good selection on meats, but the nut roast was average. There was a good range of vegetables. A little tight on the stuffing, but there was more than enough extras to make up for it. Very nice Haze Cider on tap. And a beautiful cheesecake for Dessert too!The inside was a big surprise, lots of character and a cosy feel for such a large space. The highlight of the visit was the friendly attentative staff, the one that stood out was Betty (at least that was the name on the bill). Very friendly!

Called up yesterday evening at very short notice for a group of 5, was told no problem and so were there in a few minutes.Arrived to a very warm welcome and even the dog was allowed in (which was a bonus as I forgot to mention that on the phone).Table service for drinks and then food was quick and unobtrusive, the waitress was very knowledgeable, patient and charming.Very good food enjoyed by all and our friends from London very impressed by the lovely country pub atmosphere. We will definitely tell all of our friends and be coming back.

This was not only our first post lockdown meal out. It was also our first carvery in 4 months. We turned up without a reservation and on our arrival we were warmly welcomed and orders for carveries were taken.Although not terribly busy, there was clear evidence of social distancing. The meats were cooked just right. Turkey, pork and beef. The chef was very attentive and ensured minimal (gloved) contact with the plates. We, customers were required to don gloves prior to taking our plates to the Carvery. It was a bit awkward to know where to put the gloves when removed on return to the table. We were advised there would only be one size of plate issued but could return to the carvery station for top up if required. We were not disappointed with the presentation, portion size and quality of the food. A really enjoyable experience. Thank you Swans Nest. One supportive comment. I like ‘incidental music but the in house muzak was a tad louder than needed. Shouldn’t be needing to raise voice to speak. Conversation of diners on other side of restaurant was loud in order to compensate.

Been meaning to visit here for a while. Met a friend for a post Covid catch up. All the right Social Distancing measures without losing that pub vibe. Big welcome, great Carvery menu £17 huge portions plus dessert. Chef was lovely. Really proud of his station. The beef was melt in the mouth and the choc orange gateaux gorg. We couldn’t finish as hot day so they let us have a doggie box for both. Sat in the big garden for a Very pleasant couple of hours. Our waitress was a little treasure. Very attentive but discreet service and went the extra mile. She had gone off shift when we left but memorable for next time. All in all a very nice experience and highly recommended. .... and the loos were spotless.

I don't usually go for or like roast dinners out at pubs/restaurants because theu usually disappoint. The choice of vegetables swayed me to go for the carvery. It was really good, about 10 vegetable choices inc. cauliflower cheese, leeks, roasted parsnips, mashed swede, spiced red cabbage, carrots, green beans etc. The roasties were very flavoursome. The Yorkshire puds & meat were good but the veg were the star of the plate.Dogs are allowed in a large section of the pub and the staff were really friendly. The car park is very large inc plenty of room for our motorhome. The children had puddings which were ok but I thought overpriced.Overall I would definitely recommend.

This was our first visit to celebratemy husband's 60th birthday. Our friends recommended it. We went for the carvery. Great price and great choice of meat and veg. Followed by dessert, cherry cheesecake and black forest gateaux. Good selection of drinks, especially the Dorset cider.Staff warm and welcoming, clean and tidy pub with plenty of parking. Would defiantly recommend it.

Carvery remains very good, popularity and size of place means extraordinary long queue. Used to have amazing sweet options, sadly no more, probably wasnt viable given most people create a carvery mountain so no room for sweet. Place is shamefully dated, under the guise of traditional with characterful and could do with a real upgrade and a deep clean. No fire lit that day and we had a seat by window...old windows, draughty so was cold.

This is a beautiful building inside. The decor is warm and welcoming, very olde worlde. The carvery had a really good choice, the food itself was excellent. The staff all extremely pleasant and helpful. However, the thing that makes this place outstanding is the manageress. I think her name was Kerry Ann. She is so helpful, and nothing is too much trouble. How ever many problems you throw at her, she deals efficiently, and smiles through everything. I'm so impressed. The only negative about this establishment in my opinion, is that they don't open until 12.00 at lunchtime. It would be a lovely place to come for morning coffee, or even a cheeky glass of something before thinking about lunch. Apart from that - top marks.

Gracias : )

Went with another couple and my wife for dinner and the food was awful! 3 of us had lasagne and one had beef ribs - the meat in all meals was fatty even though the lasagne was meant to have no fat in it what’s so ever as it was brisket beef and slow cooked for hours as explained by a member of staff. The chips we had were not cooked and the sensation was almost like they were frozen. Our complaint was completely ignored she only argued back about the fat and the chips but the complaints of the fat of the ribs was completely ignored. Will never go back now which is a shame as we used to like coming here for their carvery.

We've been a few times to the Swans Nest in Exminster and like to go at 1200 when everything's been freshly cooked. You pay at the bar, get your ticket then queue up for the carvery.Great selection of meats and veggies and enormous Yorkshire pudding. Great place for large groups. Friendly staff. The internal decor is a bit dark and tired, but it's the food that matters!Easy parking.

Excellent quality and good selection of vegetables. All very freshly cooked and delicious. Meat was very tender and plentiful. Lovely home made Yorkshire pudding. Food was piping hot. Good selection at the bar. Lovely garden area if the weather is good. Was lovely to be able to sit outside. Good area for the kids to run around too. Staff very cheerful and helpful. Definitely one of the better places for a decent carvery. Also a great menu if you do not want carvery. Will definitely be back and can thoroughly recommend.

The carvery served us well in the spring when we called in, but on a wet Monday in September we could not bring ourselves to eat what was on display. Probably because we arrived at 1:30pm, so we opted for menu items which were very disappointing. Hard lumpy and boring. The service was cheerful but sadly this feels like somewhere whose days are numbered: big and empty.

We came for a carvery on and evening after a day at work. Years ago The Swans Nest had a really good reputation. The man putting out the food had add and did not have a beard net on..or a hat. The roast potatoes were gross, warmed up potatoes have a particular taste...these definitely weren’t fresh. The Beef was chewy, the parsnips overcooked. The best bit was the Yorkshire pud. Will we go again ..NEVER

Visited on a Sunday afternoon. Used to be a regular here but it went a bit downhill so we moved on and haven’t been for a couple of years. Popped in on our way past yesterday and had the carvery. Really enjoyed it couldn’t find fault. Everything was hot and tasty even had plenty of crackling you could help yourself to. Staff were all pleasant and helpful and at £11.95 good value too.

Met up with family as we had come down to visit. We were very surprised 😯 with the sloop, being a hungry horse we are used to them being noisy and dirty. We were so surprised and we were allowed to take our 🐶 in. The staff were lovely and most importantly so was the food.

We was on a pub tour of the area and passed this on a way to another pub and thought “oh this looks quaint” sometimes the most impromptu pubs are the best and this one certainly is! Four ales were on draft we opted for the salcombe gold Which was excellently kept. I loved the laid back atmosphere with dog friendly sofas. They have a beautiful boxer dog named boots who greets you on arrival who is loving in nature with people and dogs. Very chilled and dog friendly and I will certainly visit again and stay for longer when I’m next in the area. Whatpub online does not hype this place is much as it should.

I have been to The Dolphin Inn several times now and the staff are always very friendly and welcoming. There are homemade traditional pies and roasts offered on Sundays, and bar snacks during the week. I had forgotten my scarf and Sam had very kindly looked after it for me. I wish them a very happy and successful 2020!
