I believe this pub was recently sold off by Heavitree after many years of neglect. I'm not sure they do food yet but I was very impressed by the lady behind the bar (Kelly?). She knows her job and has a very good rapport with the customers. We'll be going again.

We had a 2 night stay at the Victoria Inn. Its well located to visit Dartmoor and surrounding area. We where staying in Rooms 2/3 (there are 3 guest rooms in total) room 2 the bathroom is across the corridor but there is a sign that state the bathroom is for exclusive use of room to the shower was brilliant. The bedrooms where quite dated but clean and large. The breakfast was great quality. The pub and business is in the process of being sold at the time of our stay there was a holding manger in charge who was very friendly and chatty.the prices in the pub was fairly cheap the barmaid was lovely always happy and cheerful.the locals where very friendly Always happy to chat.

Absolutely Fabulous pub to stay in with very friendly and helpful staff. It doesn't look much from the outside but don't let that put you off as it's a proper authentic pub with a great little garden to the rear, great selection of beers and ciders and a wonderful atmosphere inside too. Room we stayed in was very comfortable and roomy with a very powerful shower. It felt like a bedroom in a Victorian house with plenty of character. Highly recommended.

Ruth and family have taken over recently and they clearly work really hard to ensure guests have a pleasant stay. We are a family of four and spent four nights there in two decent-sized double rooms on the first floor of what is an old coaching house. Excellent value stay with a full English breakfast plus cereals each morning and a great base for exploring, at the southern edge of Dartmoor. Ruth, her son and his girlfriend were always on hand to help and also provide good local tips. Ashburton itself is a small town with a good selection of shops, cafes and pubs - albeit a few had yet to re-open following the easing of covid restrictions. Good hospitality always makes a huge difference and the Victoria Inn has it in abundance.

We popped in for a light lunch and beer as we were passing and having heard there were new managers. In the past we regularly stayed for a couple of nights as the pub provided bed and breakfast and the beer and food was outstanding. On this visit the service and beer was good and we sat in the garden near the stream. Unfortunately there was no food on offer apart from bar snacks ie crisps etc or in a fridge two cheese rolls and two pork pies. Being hungry we paid for a roll each and a pork pie. My husband roll had two patches of green mould and he was reimbursed for this with no apology. My roll had been wrapped in cling wrapping for a few days but was stale and the pork pie pastry was soggy. One bad experience out of many such a shame.

We stopped off to have a look round Ashburton on a very hot day, and needed lunch. The Victoria had a small beer garden next to a stream with some seats in the shade. The bartender gave us a warm welcome, and we ordered a light cold lunch, and cold drinks. I had prawn sandwiches with Marie Rose dressing, on brown bread and they were very generous with the (small) prawns. It came with just enough side salad to complement it, plus a lemon wedge. My husband had the cheddar ploughman’s and the two mini loaves came with avery generous helping of cheese , plus pickled onions, gherkins, side salad, dressing , and pickle. He enjoyed a cold Dartmoor brew shandy, and I enjoyed a small cold Sauvignon blanc. It was quiet there, with the sound of the stream...what more could one want..oh yes..the toilets were nice and clean!

We’ll be working in Ashburton for the summer and thought we’d check out some of the local pubs for our weekends off. The Victoria is a sweet little local pub that allows dogs which we love as we have a little furry friend. The young lad at the bar was very friendly and helpful and the decor clean but classic. A nice village pub! I’m afraid to say the very reasonably priced food was not great, I had a pork and chorizo was pretty good! My partners pheasant pie on the other hand must have been frozen or cooked a few days before becuase it was rock hard- pheasant in their defence is a really hard meat to keep fresh but sadly the pie crust was so crunchy he couldn’t eat it...he’s too polite to return meals so we fed most of it to the dog- he liked it! Having seen previous reviews the owners seem very caring to their pub and will retort with a defensive message but I would like to point out people are posting unbiased honest reviews which could potentially be used as a platform to improve and be top of the game but then again you can’t please everyone (customers) :) We did notice they offer open mic nights most Fridays we’d def come back for a few drinks and some music but I’m not sure we’d give the good another go even at those reasonable prices :-/

Why did I go back - well - I thought maybe it had improved but Oh No. The owner sort of scowled at us and was unwelcoming which was very embarrassing as I had a friend over from Holland and he was treating me and not wanting to drive anywhere. I had the fish pie - it tasted like it had been in the freezer for far too long, the fish was horrible, the potato on the top didn't have any cheese topping, the sauce inside was tasteless, ugh. I didn't complain at the time because we had already been scowled at, we just got the hell out of there as quick as poss.

The chicken was succulent and really flavoursome. The staff were very obliging when I requested salad instead of chips and they did not charge me extra. I was staying with family for New Year in Ashburton. We went to The Victoria pub, the one advertised as friendly and welcoming. I was horrified and appalled to overhear the land lord and landlady verbally abuse a customer at ten to midnight. They shouted and swore at her, in the most humiliating fashion, like a pack. The landlord shot out from behind the bar to manhandle the woman out of the bar! She was in tears, all she wanted was to buy a drink! It was loud and busy but I could see no reason for this calm and collected woman to be abused in such a fashion. Everybody was merry and there was no trouble, but after this the whole atmosphere changed. It was a sad embarrassing ending to an otherwise lovely evening. I will not be going back, nor will I be recommending anyone else to go there. Appalling behaviour by the landlord and land lady. A venue NOT to be supported.

Slightly off the main street in Ashburton, in North Street (well placed for the start/finish of a couple of popular walks), this is a genuine old pub, unpretentious but serving good value food quickly and cheaply - two of ate, with a drink each, for under £18. The food was advertised as home made and it looked and tasted like it - my steak pie was brilliant. Staff were friendly but not gushing, which is just what we like. There's a good choice of local beers, and a wine list (which we didn't explore). Warmly recommended. They also do Bed and Breakfast so there are some more reviews in the Hotel section.

My boyfriend and I ended up at the Victoria as recommended by the host of our B&B (The Hive - see separate review). We had been rained off Dartmoor and were looking for a decent pub meal to console us. We found it here! The bartender was friendly, as was the chef when he materialised - and so were a number of the regulars who were all too happy to chat to us. Some of the proposed conversation topics were less than elegant and this maybe would not be the ideal spot to take your mother, but bearing in mind that we were in a country pub we smiled politely and made our way over to a table for our meal.We heard that the liver and bacon had been rated as the best liver and bacon an earlier visitor had ever had, so my boyfriend decided to put the chef to the test and see if this was true, knowing that liver is very easy to cook badly. Fortunately he was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed his meal. I ordered vege lasagne which was also very nice and, after having indulged in too many Cornish/Devonshire treats over the previous few days, I was thrilled that it was served with probably the biggest and nicest fresh side salad I've ever encountered. The pub is not fancy but if you're looking for a good honest meal at good value, you'll find what you're after at the Victoria.

I'm sorry. I just don't get it. Surely we didn't go when new management were there? If so, it doesn't bode well.I rarely review badly but this was by far the most disappointing place I've eaten in years. Easter lunch time you expect to be busy but the welcome was one of cold, rushed, tumbleweed. Bit like the food really. On asking if they were serving food the response was a sigh and "uh huh" and "small, medium or large?" Trust me I wasn't being difficult. I had no idea what she meant. Had she misheard me. I repeated it and she said "roast - small medium or large?!" This was almost funny but we were hungry so went for the large. The large was certainly that but that's where the description of traditional roast ends! I started to tell you about each element but really found although cathartic for me, not really the point. In a word - Yuk!!! Actually I need to add a few more to substantiate. Reheated, pre prepared, mas produced mush!We both left the dinner and were embarrassed when the 'owner' came to collect the plates and asked proudly "beaten?" I have to say I nearly said no but the cook should be. We hardly touched it, she never once thought there might be something wrong with it. We, like the people next to us, we not amused and were not encouraged to say anything. I can assure you it would most definitely have fallen on death ears so the better option is - tell others.I'm not saying don't go. I'm saying if this is the impact of the new management, be prepared to be disappointed.Ashburton however is lovely and welcoming.
