It is what it is. An unpretentious café/greasy spoon, popular with bikers and passing truckers just off the A380. Good value grub, generous sandwich fillings and bowl of soup. Good coffee. Really friendly, engaging and welcoming crew. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

The Haldon Grill is my favourite eating place. I've been going for years. Great location (near Mamhead Obelisk, and just off the A380) and lovely chill atmosphere. Try the all-day breakfast!

Breakfast very greasy, to be expected at this style of cafe but the ingredients really were of a low standard. Beans, tomatoes cold, everything else tasteless. Very unfriendly service - save your money and pop across to the other cafe on the other side of a38.

We have often visited this Cafe before and always had a good meal. However, on one particular Sunday we arrived at 1330 as the Cafe closed at 1400. we were reluctantly allowed inside but told there was a limited menu as the café was being closed, albeit half an hour before the advertised time. The lady behind the counter then switched the coffee machine off. She made it clear by complaining loudly that the kitchen was closing needed to be cleaned. I think other members of staff were embarrassed by this woman’s actions , but one persons attitude ruined what could have been a nice lunch. She made it obvious that we were not welcome and we were so embarrassed that we left. I did feel somewhat sorry for the other members of staff would always treat us so well, but this will have been our final visit to the Cafe. That is such a shame, but we found another place nearby who treated us like royalty. Why would we go back to the Haldon chalet?

Excellent road side cafe with lovely staff, great service and good food. Took a group on community bus and happy people.

Friendly staff but if you like deep deep fried greasy food then this is for you. Everything tasted greasy and dripping in fat, beans cold and toast was not toasted, soggy bread! Not worth the money we paid, won’t be back

Not a place to go for a nice experience. The old man is very rude and aggressive. Food is awful when we said it was not nice he went into one. We left as we felt uneasy.

Had seen this cafe on last visit to Devon, so decided to try it on the way to our Holiday this time round Was pretty impressed with the range of food and it seemed a decent quality meal they have a very friendly attitude towards dog walkers/owners & have free biscuits on the counter for them a good turnover of people coming here to eat, so that is generally a good sign that they are a good place to eat The Full English Breakfasts were really good with excellent fried bread, Beans & tomatoes and was just what we needed after setting off from home 4 hours before in the early hours Plus decent cup of tea & latte too will certainly go here on our next trip to Devon

Be aware if your car breaks down near this exit and you decide to wait for aid on this establishment's parking lot. Owner is very aggresive and rude and won't listen to reason. To bad we could of spent the whole morning their and have breakfast...

Breakfast was shocking! Service was great but the owner also was very aggressive, had no politeness about him, he had this “I’m the boss around here” dementor about him. 👎👎

The best breakfast, according to Hyacinth Bucket(my mother!) Staff were so welcoming. Place was packed, which speaks volumes. Will definitely be going back.

We ordered two breakfast's and two teas, one mega and a veggie for which we were relieved of £22 which after a fairly long wait (to be fair the place was full). The first thing to arrive was the toast, served 5 mins before the breakfast arrived, we notice that the waiter was carrying the plate with his thumb on the toast! Next came the breakfast though it really should be renamed heart attack on a plate it was so greasy. Cheap catering sausages full of tasteless mush, canned mushrooms drowning in butter, canned tomatoes, the only saving grace was the eggs and the bacon. Needless to say that it wasn't all eaten. Oh and as for the mugs of tea, I think it came straight from the washing up bowl.

We visited today for a Fathers Day breakfast, Dad had asked to go somewhere he could have a “proper roadside cafe Full English breakfast” We weren’t disappointed, the staff could not have been more attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The portion size was huge and it was nice that the drinks were included with the breakfast. We will definitely be back.

This is the 2nd time we have been for breakfast, (wanted to give them another go), but I'm afraid to say this visit was worse than the first. The food is very very greasy ( you could have swam in the grease that the fried bread came with), so can say with hand on heart we will never use them again.

Having visited the grill many times I was very disappointed with the food now being served there. I had the full monty breakfast which has now gone up to £9.50. The bacon was so over cooked that it resembled a piece of leather, the fried egg had a similar texture. That with the low quality sausage and cheap bread and tea that had been made with yesterdays tea bags. I am afraid I will not be calling in again.

Absolutely superb breakfast which includes a hot drink. Ample parking. A friendly prompt service. Can highly recommend.

I came with my fiancé’s family (her parents are profoundly deaf) and to say the service was 5 stars is an understatement, it was absolutely perfect from the moment we entered to the moment we left, I’m a fussy eater and not many places allow me to swap breakfast items anymore, this place does providing its like for like in value which is more than fair, I made a fair few changes and they got everything right, the speed of service was also fantastic as we got our food in about 5 minutes and all cooked perfectly, they were so friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much, we will definitely be returning, thank you for a lovely breakfast!

For the days when only a bacon sandwich will do, this is the place. On a wet Sunday January lunch time, this place was rammed. Veggie options are available too….

we have visited this establishment on numerous occasions but after todays experience i will NEVER EVER set foot in here again. the attitude of the staff was appalling and the man that i can only assume was the manager was disgusting. he said he was accomodating our requests when out of 3 orders 2 were incorrect and when we complained one of the girls behind the counter came over and stated that we got what we ordered and 3 of them heard us. i thought most cafes were happy to accomodate tweaks to requests. Please please do not waste your money here because they feel they are doing their customers favours rather than providing a service that they are being paid to provide.

The breakfast took ages to come out and it wasn't even that busy, when it did the beans and tomatos was cold and the fryed break was so burnt, told them about the cold breakfast and gave me some more beans and Tom's and I was still left with the cold ones as well, should of just taken back and did a fresh plate but no, so didn't enjoy it !! And it used to be really good here now it's just kids running the place!!

Wish I read the last review, I echo the last comments. The cheapest ingredients and string money for a breakfast. Seriously sticky tables what is this all about ?? You have been warned

Superb place to grab a hearty breakfast, dropped in by mistake when looking a place to have breakfast on our journey home. The staff are very welcoming, portion sizes are huge!

Don’t know where to start, disgusting cheap deep fired pig swill. Utterly appalling food. That’s not to mention the two long hairs my partner found in her breakfast.I see this place has some really bad reviews and surprisingly some really good reviews. How this can be, I am confused????Really was one of the worst breakfasts I’ve ever had. Didn’t eat much of it and felt sick afterwards.The owner was a nice guy but had more grease in his hair than my breakfast did and needs to cut and clean his finger nails.Utterly disgusting, Dont know how this place can carry on selling such cheap crappy food.Avoid at all costs

Always stop on our way to Torquay (4-5 times a year) never disappointed. Great no frills break in your journey, good wholesome , hot food quickly served.

We stopped here nearly every time we go down to Torquay.stopped on Saturday about 11.30 car park was half full.me and my wife had ham,eggs, and chips we had not long to wait before it came out food came out lovely and hot and loads on the plates staff were polite and friendly

What we thought would be a quick stop turned into a complete not. After walking in to find a girl on her phone at the till clearly not wanting to be there, other staff trying to find peoples tables for their food, our order being placed wrong, as we stated our allergies which were clearly ignored. We will reconsider our next stop there. Luckily the leopard print masked girl saved the day after seeing our concerned faces when our food arrived. She asked if we were okay. We explained we had allergies with tomatoes. She apologised, offered drinks and had completely new and right meals served to us within minutes. If it wasn’t for her, things could have been completely different..

Called at 1230, very busy.Tables not cleaned.no social distanceing.Food took ages,didn't all come together.toilets were filthy,no toilet paper.Have called in many times before,would not go back again.

The friendly Haldon grill has reopened as a takeaway with outdoor seating to use . Their rock buns are as good as ever . Their new opening times are every day 9 - 2 . A good spot to aim for if you are out enjoying the woods on bikes or foot .

Called in for breakfast on a very rainy Saturday morning. Staff were superb recommending what breakfast to have for a cheaper and better deal. Fantastic. Beware of you order a large tea, it is very large!!! If you order the mega breakfast, wow, proper old school cafe food and apparently the bubble and squeak is superb, way too healthy for me lol but partner had it and she was impressed.Revisiting to try the burgers, hopefully they'll be old school/fairground ride style, fantastic, cosy, can understand why it gets packed in the Summer.

A very friendly cafe with good value drinks and fryups. We also enjoy their home made cakes. A big carpark but also a warm welcome for cyclists. There is outdoors seating for the summer. Convenient for walking or cycling in the Halden Forest.

We popped in here on Sunday on our way to Torquay it was very busy inside.my wife and myself ordered ham egg chips,it did not take long for the food to come out.there was loads of ham on the plates and it was hot.

A veces tomo el desayuno grande, aunque mi favorito es la burbuja y el chirrido con tocino y huevos. El servicio es rápido y amigable, siempre está impecablemente limpio y la relación calidad-precio es excelente. Una verdadera joya de lugar.

Stopped for a very tasty lunch , good prices and generous portions. Food served quickly and hot. It looks a little run down and could do with a bit of a spruce up but the food is good and we would come back again.

I visited with a friend who had been told it was good. I must have driven past it hundreds, if not thousands of times and never been in. Well more fool me, it was warm, welcoming, very clean and comfortable. We chose a table, ordered our food and drink at the counter and sat down. Almost immediately, the waitress delivered hot and delicious coffee (I am not a fan of the bitter coffee you get at Starbucks or Costa so if that is your preference, this place would not be for you). Not long afterwards our beautifully cooked brunches arrived. I had asked for some slight variations to the advertised brunch and they were so accommodating and I got exactly what I had asked for. I hope that will be the first of many visits.

So this place is a nice small cafe on the side a road. A nice place to stop for breakfast. The breakfast sandwiches are quite expensive when compared to other places and the bacon was cold when we had it.

Forget the overpriced and overused Haldon Forest Park's Ridge Cafe. Visit the Haldon Grill instead. We had brunch here this morning (Easter Sunday) and very good it was too. All day breakfast and egg and chips with tea. Simple fare but tasty and inexpensive. No frills premises but clean and staff are friendly. Will certainly come back next time we're walking in the forest.

Such a welcoming place to walkers, cyclists, bikers and everyone. The best cooked breakfast anywhere- with as many variations as you could want. We enjoy their homemade rock buns and coffee. As well as filter coffee they have just installed a new coffee machine for folks wanting expression etc. Would give it 6 stars if I could .

Good food good price good service.. but too keen to close. It's not right to stack chairs and start hoovering when folks are still eating and it's not yet closing time.

Only heard about this place last week, after 9 years of living in the bay.

Such friendly, generous people that you ever and the coffee was pretty good too! We only stopped for drink and toilet on our way to Paignton Zoo but will certainly use this lovely café again.

We went here on out way on holiday after reading the reviews. It is a greasy spoon offering fried breakfast. The staff are incredibly friendly, the place is clean and the food is adequate. Everything is fried but it fills a hole. Plenty of parking.

Visited this morning as a family of 8.... A warm welcome on a wet day, the food seemed what I would call proper farmhouse produce and no mass produced stuff, reasonable prices and a really nice feel to the place .... Toilets are spotless and plenty of space in the car park. Right next to the main A380 and so easy to find. Well done !

What to say Good food and friendly staff. If you have come down the motorway to the Torbay area this is a good place to stop for a bit to eat. If you are going to the Plymouth area it is worth the small diversion. My regular stop

This is a great place to go for breakfast or to call in on your way to south Devon or Cornwall. Spacious restaurant with a excellent menu but the breakfast is just superb.A good sized plate of all the usual items served hot on a hot plate.Service is excellent and as it was mothers day when we went they gave all the Mums a bag of Maltesers,Nice touch.

My wife and I regularly go to haldon forest to walk the dogs and it has become a ritual to have a cooked breakfast here first. There is never a single thing wrong with the food. All perfectly cooked and piping hot. Nice people too

I have been calling in to this place for many years and I want to stick up for it after reading a couple negative reviews. Whatever I choose to have hear is always quickly served, hot and good value. How anyone can complain about the sausages I dont know because they are my favourite sausages anywhere. The place is warm, friendly and the staff cannot do enough for you. I cannot think of a negative at all.

Ok, it was quite cheap, but that's it. Parking is good. Service was cheerful. Food not up to scratch.

We stopped here for lunch on our way to our holiday in Dawlish we usualy stop here and it normally good but this time food wasn't good chips was warm the ham was thin and fatty found it rubbish not sure we would stop here again

Visited this place on a number of occasions and its an ideal stop off after negotiating the dreadful M5. Food is good and well priced, its a typical greasy spoon cafe and quick to serve up, everything appears to be freshly cooked. Toilets are clean but could do with being updated.

Popped here for a cuppa after segwaying and wasn't going to eat until we saw the wraps on the menu. I wasn't expecting much as it looked very basic... Thought six pounds for a wrap was a bit pricey but actually was amazing, came with lush salad and i was stuffed afterwards. Three of us had different wraps - mine was a mexican veggie one and i think my friend had lamb - anyway three days later and we were still saying how yummy it was! Great little place

Over many years on our holiday travels to Torquay, Devon and Cornwall, this has been "our" pit stop for breakfast/lunch or just a cup of tea.The service and quality never varies, excellent always. The staff are always very welcoming, and the place has a variety of clients, which highlights its great reputation.If in doubt ask the staff for a "short access route" to cross the road. We did and we were soon sorted. This place is well worth a stopover any time.

We stopped here at the start of a hen do day and were not disappointed.We did book a table for 15 which was ready when we arrived.The staff could not have been more helpful taking our order at the table when usually you go to the counter.The food arrived quickly, it all arrived together, hot and the portions were generous.We were going Segwaying and it was a great start to the day thank you

On a recent day out we stopped for a coffee, planning to have lunch at this café on the hill. We ordered tea for two and were asked whether we wanted a cup or a large mug. We decided to have a cup and, after looking at the comprehensive menu, agree we would have an all day breakfast instead of looking for lunch elsewhere. We were blown away by the meals that arrived. Beautifully cooked and presented, I had the veggie option. People who had the hot chocolate raved over it and the rock cakes. Staff were so friendly and welcoming that we will make a special day out just to visit the café. We also bought some very nice local blueberry jam which is delicious. Free Wi-Fi available too! Great value, great service and great welcome.

We go here every month for a club meet, Food is basic, but fresh and tasty, cooked to order, not held on hotplates, so you can expect a wait if its busy.Home made cakes etc. are reasonably priced and very nice.Even the option of a large mug of tea.Massive car park, clean toilets.For what once must have been a transport café, it has rebranded its self, and done a really good job of it.

Stopped here for a drink before we set off on a bike ride nearby and were not disappointed. The staff were fab - friendly and welcoming and the hot choc was one of the best I've had anywhere! We were planning on getting some food on our way back but sadly they'd finished serving... Will definitely time it better get time as everything looked fantastic. Great little place.

The staff here are all so cheerful and welcoming as they serve up hearty , great value, all- day breakfast, hot drinks and the best rock cakes ever.It is always worth cycling up the hill to Halden to visit this brilliant cafe. If you have to arrive by car, there is a good size carpark too.

A traditional roadside cafe with a great bacon sandwich and mug of tea. In these days of fancy coffees and teas and an overwhelming array of modern food, the Haldon provides good basic food which is just what the doctor ordered! Carry on with the great work!

Great basic traveller's place for basic home cooking at breakfast time,lunch and dinner.Good menus with plenty of choice situated with a large car park for easy access.Enjoy yourself whether travelling alone,with the family or friends and colleagues and you don't want to waste time or be too fussy.

Cannot praise the staff here enough. After having to stop here due to our car breaking down we were a little stressed to say the least! But we went in with our children (aged 9 months - 7 years) and we were all made to feel welcome. Lovely food at very reasonable prices...and loads of it!Will be visiting here more often

My husband & I stopped for the all day breakfast at mid afternoon. There was a friendly welcome and the slight changes we wanted to make to the breakfasts were no problem. We were both ravenous & our food was with us quickly. We made short work of the perfectly cooked breakfast & lovely hot cup of coffee.

Was visiting about 20 miles from Haldon Chalet Café but decided as it was the best breakfast around we would make the journey. We weren't disappointed. We had the full monty breakfast, and as usual it was very good value, well cooked and even though the café was very busy we didn't have to wait too long. The atmosphere at the café is very friendly and the place is very clean, scoring a 5 on the Environmental Health Inspection. There is plenty of car parking space and this café is well worth a visit. We'll certainly be back again the next time we are within 20 miles of it.

In line with many other comments I would say that it is what it is, ie. a good old fashioned greasy spoon transport cafe. No pretentious food just basic snacks and meals. There is plenty to choose from and next time I will avoid the big breakfasts and choose poached eggs or a sandwich!

All that you would expect from a good roadside stop. Large car park. Good spread of meals and snacks at reasonable cost and well cooked.

really good fried food (they do a lot more, but that was what I chose.) I would recommend it to anyone, a decent meal at a good price, and is easily accessible also really close to some excellent dog walks.

I stopped here a couple of days ago on my way to Torquay. There was an assortment of trucks, vans and cars in the car park so the place would seem to have a varied clientele. They offer an all day breakfast with a mug of tea at £5.35 which at first glance appears to be good value for money. For this you get one slice of bacon, one sausage, a fried egg, beans, fried bread and a hash brown, plus a slice of toast.It was so awful, it's a job to know where to begin. The bacon, which I had asked to be well done, came out cooked to a cinder, looking like it probably had been thrown in the deep fat fryer. The sausage was cheap, full of filler and not much else, including taste. The egg? - it was fine but how hard is it to cook an egg? The beans were cold and had been slopped all over the plate, the hash brown was luke warm and, saving the worst for last, the fried bread was soaked in pungent, well over-used fryer oil, one press of the knife on the bread and out it seeped across the plate.I ate what I could and as the place was filling up, decided to put it down to experience and never bother calling here again. Did they make a special effort for me as I was wearing a suit rather than overalls or did they really just not give a hoot? - I have no idea. Deep frying oil has a "use by" date, so please, change it occasionally so that not everything on the plate stinks and tastes of it. Terrible.

Visit there bi monthly with our motorcycle group, Blue Knights England XIV, for Saturday breakfast. No this is not a motorcycle cafe, just a good place to eat, especially if your heading for the 'Riviera', just 20 miles from Torquay. Food is good and plentiful for the price. Whilst most of the group go for Big Boys Breakfasts, we like to give the Treacle sponge and Custard a going over, absolutely the best we have had out anywhere. Staff are great and helpful.

Went in this morning for a breakfast and opted for the mega breakfast priced at £6 what we got was 1 cheap sausage, 1 rasher of bacon, fried bread, an egg that had been cooked within an inch of it's life, beans, mushrooms, black pudding and tomatoes. The whole lot was swimming in grease and I mean swimming that made my partner and I feel physically sick afterwards. The coffee was all milk with a slight hint of coffee. The staff were very pleasant and everything was very clean just let down by the breakfast. Altogether a big let down and will not be visiting again.

No pretentions with this place - it's an old fashioned roadside cafe. That being said the food is very good (especially the bacon sandwich), its served piping hot, everything is clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The coffee mugs are like buckets but who cares, if you want a break with a bit of "local charm" this is for you - so much better than bland national chain cafes.

Nothing compares to the english fry up in the area.Not the prettyist of cafes,.not the most comfortable, but the food is always well cooked, price is right too, and the car park is always full,wish they would open a bit earlier.

Called in here with 2 year old grand daughter on the way from bristol to Plymouth. Plenty of parking close to entrance, staff carried over food to table without being asked as i had my hands full with bag and young child. Plenty of high chairs and corner with small table for children and toys.Decor is little dated but the food looked reasonable, I only had coffee and biscuit. Makes a change from the big roadside service areas.

This is a cafe which is almost like the Little Chef of the 'Old Days'.Very nice clean surroundings and basic food - good size portions and cooked fresh.Good cakes to have with afternoon tea or coffee!A pleasant good value stop whether you are driving miles and want a break or you just fancy a coffee!
