Brilliant carvery; helpful staff, personable and talented chef - thank you!

Amazing service and lovely food. We hadn't booked and dropped in on the off chance. Luckily they fitted us in (only just) during a Friday lunch...it was Valentine's day, and they were so accommodating. The lovely lady who saw us to our table was fantastic. My husband could not decide on the ale he wanted as he was unfamiliar with their brands. He was offered a small taster of a recommended ale, and he has now found a new love. We absolutely loved our visit. We cannot fault it. All of the staff were so friendly and helpful, and the food was awesome. I had the prawns to start the and carvery, both super delicious.

Best carvery around by a country mile! Absolutely divine.

Having had a pre Christmas meal here with 5 girlfriends, which was really good, we decided to return for one of our meet ups. We were not disappointed. From the minute you walk in here, the staff are friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble for them. They don't hover, but always seem to be there if you need them. The food was excellent - carveries, steak and kidney pudding and tenderloin pork. Couldn't fault any of it. It's my new favourite place and I highly recommend it.

The Carvery had a choice of well cooked tasty meats. Fresh vegetables that were hot and not undercooked which is to our liking. Delicious

Just been here for lunch with my family, food was great, friendly staff and very cozy and lovely atmosphere will definitely be coming again.

Had our valentines meal here and although my expectations were high due to friends and family recommending the place, I felt it still exceeded this! We have rebooked with family tomorrow. My partner had the carvery - the portion size was just right and they had a fantastic range of sides to go with it. Everything tasted fresh and had lots of flavour! I’ve been to many carveries where the meat is dry from sitting round all day and vegetables is like baby food, but this has been the best. I had the venison which I was blown away by - hats off to the chef! The staff were warm and welcoming which always makes the experience that bit better. Can’t wait to return tomorrow!

Excellent carvery. Melt in the mouth pork and the roast potatoes where crisp on the outside and fluffy in the centre l good selection of veg too. Even my mother didn't complain which is rare.

We went here my for my dads birthday, there was 12 of us. There’s something on the menu to please the whole family. We all left very full and happy with our meals. The carvery meat portions were large and there were lots of veg options. As someone with a big sweet tooth, the deserts were incredible 😍 All the staff were very friendly. We really enjoyed our family get to together. Will definitely be returning.

Has this changed hands?? Disappointing carvery, dried up meat, cold spuds, bland caulicheese /parsnips , gloopy gravy... Price gone up and meat portions gone down... We've been going for years and it's always been very welcoming with excellent food. Went valentine's lunch and wish we'd had M&s meal deal instead. No nice welcome and grub was mediocre, such a shame

We have just had a birthday party at the Hare and hounds, we all enjoyed our amazing meals , the staff were lovely too and very helpful. We will definitely come back again.

The carvery only lost a star because roast potatoes were undercooked...everything else was delicious..bread sauce ..parsnips...very good helping of meat...carvers really lovely...and waitress with short blind hair very attentive... It was just so so busy and so very loud.. .too many people squashed in.....puddings very tasty...Will go back..thank you

Perfect service and good food. The Carvery is stupendous, tender meat and delicious vegetables. My Husband can fully recommend the Steak & Kidney pudding.

Why is it that the roast beef is always rare? Very dismissive reply from the chef when asked if we could have some from the well cooked end. Not very customer friendly to an 87 year old woman who doesn't eat rare meat. Also the turkey was under done! Usual other areas of the establishment were lovely as usual.

No peas, parsnips or beans. Meats really good, rest really nice

I'm not going to say this was bad, it's a pub it's ok but I got one of my pub food Pet hates notably a pie that's not a pie, its a casserole with some pastry as a lid. It was nice so it's a weird thing but it's not a pie and when the chefs had gone to the trouble of making the rest of the food properly like cauliflower cheese in the carvery it was a shock if you can call it that .... When it's 17 quid make the thing properly it's not hard

The no.1 place to go to for a carvery in the Torbay/Newton Abbot area. You never fail to have a bad one here and the staff are always so helpful, happy and efficient in their service. Wonderful!

Excellent Carvery, friendly and efficient staff. Christmas time so extremely busy. We were sat on a table for two on a long line of seats with tables for four either side. A party of four arrived and the lady said they were expecting a further three, she had forgotten to advise the restaurant of the extra people and no other tables were available. So seven people were crammed in next to us. We heard them say that they were unhappy, they could not possibly eat their meals. We felt very pressured and uncomfortable as they kept looking at us. Fortunately we had finished our main meal and decided although it would be fun to see them try and eat we would leave. My husband had barely stood up before one of their party was moving to our table. There was no apology from the staff. As far as I could see there are only two tables for two people.

We’ve been to the Hare And Hounds many times over the last few years, but unfortunately tonight was probably the worst experience. The barman and the chef behind the carvery were excellent, and the food was good. Unfortunately the waiting staff were so so slow, had to be chased up for cutlery after desserts were brought to the table, had to be chased to place orders for coffee at the end of the meal, sat for over 20 minutes with empty plates on the table with no staff members checking everything was okay. Didn’t have anyone ask us throughout the meal if everything was okay or we wanted to order any more drinks. This would be understandable if the restaurant was packed and there were very little staff, but there were empty tables in the restaurant, definitely not as busy as our last visits, and we sat watching waiting staff chat amongst themselves not looking after the tables which was very annoying, especially as they are now charging over £17 for a carvery, and compete with restaurants of a higher standard. I did explain to the lady when we paid about my disappointment only to be told that they were very busy and short staffed, both of which I had to disagree with and explain. I’ve seen their restaurant serviced better with the same amount of staff previously went at full capacity. There definitely seems to be a change of the team front of house, but most definitely not as efficient as the previous . The food was good, but I don’t think we’ll be rushing back.

Wont be returning. Im not sure if this has changed hands or management but its not the same. We've been coming here for years, every December for a family meal. Tonight was our last. The bar staff and the chap on the carvery were brilliant. The waitresses however don't seem to care. We waited forever to put our order in. We had to keep asking for cutlery and when we finally got pudding, one didn't come out. We had to find someone to order coffee which again took ages. My dad was missing his spoon. Instead of going to get it, the waitress stopped on route to talk to her colleague. No crackers on the table this year, no mints on the way out, no pudding trolley anymore, cost of the food has increased and very slow service. Shame but think we will try the Linney next year.

I went for lunch at the Hare and Hounds today, with 5 friends. We were seated quickly at a lovely round table, so we could easily chat together. Although there didn't seem to be a lot of staff, they worked their socks off, being very helpful, cheerful and friendly, not seeming to be in a flustered rush, yet managing to keep everyone happy. Very professional. The drinks and food orders were taken quickly and those of our party who weren't having carvery didn't have to wait overly long for their food, particularly considering how busy the restaurant was. The food was very good - piping hot, lots of it, although the chips could have been better, but the meals were tasty and filling. The cost of the meal was on a par with other restaurants, not scarily expensive and in my opinion, worth every penny. I wouldn't hesitate to return to the Hare and Hounds, in fact I look forward to going there again and am happy to highly recommend it - do book though - they were very busy!

We came here for our work Christmas lunch. The food was amazing, so tasty. Only down side was the service was quite slow, we waited a long time between finishing a course and plates being cleared, if service was a bit better would have definitely been 5*s!

Went Saturday night with mrs G, Anne and Malc. We all decided to have the carvery, which was really good. The service throughout the evening was excellent. So if you want a really nice carvery in a great surrounding with good service you know where to go.

Really lovely place to eat and catch up. The food was the best carvery I've had, so fresh and flavoursome, lots of choice. The warm ,sweet beetroot was a personal fave!

One time was brilliant, went in yesterday was busy, . Got no where to go. Meats very small portions, price goes up chef carvery look scruffy. Oh dear

Dropped in after being at the Newton Abbot Christmas craft fair and it was fantastic. Staff lovely, carvery amazing and a lovely Christmas atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back. Well done and keep up the good work 👍❤️

Very good food and service at reasonable prices

We’ve been here multiple times and have always had a lovely experience however our most recent experience has really put me off returning. I opted for the carvery and the ‘chef’ tried to hack at the end of the tiniest bit of meat left instead of cutting into the fresh one, subsequently it was inedible and dry. My partner ordered the fish and chips and it was disgusting and certainly wasn’t fresh. The staff are always pleasant but not attentive in the slightest. They did refund the fish dinner without quibble. I’m really disappointed.

Lovely food and service as always Great Carvery

Liked the place and food but I think they need to consider not using the same knifes when cutting up carvery as they were cutting up turkey and pork using the same knives and I don’t personally eat pork and so it put me off eating turkey. The same is also true for beef and gammon where they used the same knife. But overall nice place.

Carvery is not too bad. The roast potatoes tasted like frozen ones and could have been cooked a bit longer. Lovely pudding, I had a latte, but half the mug was foam, and only Luke warm coffee when I found it. The staff are friendly and worked hard.

Very nice food and great service, the decor is clean and stylish. Turkey Club sandwich with Fries was very good. Also, the Munkfish and Prawn Curry was excellent, spice level reasonably spicy (less than madras/more than tikka massala). The carvery looked good, and I will be back for that soon! The vanilla cheese cake and pear tart were also excellent. Another visit we had Wagu burger (Good) and Pork Belly (Excellent)

Fantastic service, food, and I lovely place. After being told at the Devon Dumpling that they stop serving food a 2pm and it was only 2:02pm I drove over to the Hare and Hounds and called them on the way and the lady on the end of the phone "said no problem" we will keep the carvery open until you get here. 🙂 They went the extra mile with their service, low on veg they brought out fresh to the table.

Lovely birthday lunch for my Dad and Sister. We had a mix of meals, some had carvery and some had menu options. Everything was first class. It was incredibly busy but the staff do a great job of keeping everyone happy and well fed.

The meal was not up to past standards. Ordered fish and chips and scampi and chips. The fish batter was dark, and the husband said, tasted burnt and very soggy. The chips were cold and also Mushy peas. Were we seated was right by the carvery so much noise we couldn't hear ourself talk. We had our main and left didn't even stayed for dessert. Service seemed to take along time to get to us. I use to love going her but after this night think we will look elsewhere.

We have been coming here almost every Sunday for the last 4yrs and more recently every Sunday when we can get a booking. The veg is always fresh the meet is always tender and the gravy is outstanding, not your standard carvery more like a home cooked meal, the staff are very friendly and we are alway welcomed with a smile when we arrive, if I could give it more rating I would. They do anything to help you.☺️

Came here tonight for a birthday meal. Cannot rate it highly enough. Fantastic food, lovely wine, friendly service and they allow dogs. What a great place !

Sadly my food wasn’t good. I had duck and it was odd. It seemed to be boiled and was dry. Not like duck I normally have. I had indigestion all night and this morning. Saying that the pudding was nice and service good hence three stars.

Lovely food served by friendly staff. A little disappointed that they didn't read the notes made on the booking that one of our party is gluten and dairy allergic so weren't prepared for it.

Good service and not a long wait for food even though it was busy. The carvery looked great but we opted for the menu which had a lot of choice. We both had a burger which was big and very tasty and nicely presented. Great pudding menu also and great to see some vegan options- the cherry and chocolate tart was great. Reasonable prices and nice atmosphere.

We went with a friend who had dementia and they looked after us superbly. Our request for a quiet table was observed and the staff could not be more attentive. Service was swift and friendly. We all had the "pensioners" carvery deal ( not on Sundays), and it was very good value. The young man serving it was very helpful and LISTENED to our special requests. Overall a good experience

I brought 15 members of the family to the Hare & Hounds for a Sunday carvery recently and had an excellent visit. The staff were very friendly and catered for all our needs with drinks and seating, the food was superb and everybody had a great afternoon. Thank you to all the staff!

Lovely family pub and restaurant . Staff so helpful and kind . Nothing too much trouble. Our dog Bruno says it’s the best pub ever! He was given a water bowl and a huge amount of scraps from the carvery to eat from the waiter! Food fantastic and good portions . Play area for children are great too . Arrived without booking but they said no problem and found us a table . Will come again . Thank you so much

Amazing place. Staff are very prompt and very polite. The place is very clean and the food is the best I've had in a very long time. Visit here every year on holiday.

We had our wedding reception here and everything was just beyond perfect. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Planning it was made so easy, we went in twice to chat about what we wanted, and the team just got it done - they checked in with us a week before to ensure everything was in order. We were accommodated in the garden room for a casual gathering of 25 adults and 10 children. When I couldn't get my playlist to play on the TV, the chefs lent us their Bluetooth speaker!!! All chefs will know a bluetooth speaker is an integral member of the BOH team so this was a HUGELY kind thing to do and I will never forget this gesture of kindness. It is clearly a very well run establishment. Staff are well presented, polite, attentive but not overbearing, and everything was done in a professional and streamlined manner. We were given white tablecloths and little confetti bits and everything! Nothing was too much trouble. The carvery was absolutely stunning, the crackling is literally the best I've had anywhere. Writing about it is making me hungry! Such a good meal! I want to live the day over and over again. It felt like a dream and I honestly don't think we could have had such a joyful day anywhere else. There was a park for all the kids, staff amazing, gorgeous venue, stunning food, everything just 10/10 perfect. Whether you're after a meal or a bigger family gathering or celebration, this is the place to come. We are so so grateful to all management and all FOH and BOH staff. From the food, to the service, to the gorgeous flowers outside, it was PERFECT. THANK YOU EVERYONE xxxxxxxxx

The starters were perfect but a number of the main courses were served with Luke warm chips and over cooked peas.. not the most imaginative of sides!

Beautiful people there to help when husband was hangry at the garden centre. Kitchen open, did not close between lunch and dinner very unusual. We went for sandwiches and ended up with a two course lunch/dinner

We visited the Hare and Hounds for an evening midweek. We ha heard that the carvery was really good there. We were really disappointed, it was a very basic carvery choice of beef, turkey or pork..no gammon or lamb. The veg was also very plain nothing too exciting...looking at their reviews we wonder if the carveries are better at weekend than midweek... We decided to spoil ourselves and have a sweet..we wished we had not..we both had white chocolate raspberry meringue which consisted of one very large and very solid lump of red meringue, fruit compo and a very small bit of white chocolate with clotted cream...both of us left the large lump of meringue as we could not get our fork/spoon into it..it was totally inedible..really bad

Disappointed with the carvery this time. I was only given 2 slices of meat and considering its more expensive on a Sunday I felt cheated. Don't think I'll go on a Sunday again.

Amazing food & friendly staff. We shared a squid starter & had the Torbay sole & shared a bottle of wine . The sole & veg were piping hot & the sole was huge. The squid was soft & both starter & main were delicious. Highly recommend.

Years ago i was a regular here and was passing this evening so decided to give it a try. Please to say its still the best for miles. Wonderful camembert starter followed by carvery. The three meats on offer were cooked to perfection and succulent. There was a large choice of vegetables all of which appeared fresh and not overcooked as is common with most carveries. A wide selection of accompaniments and sauces were also on offer. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Well done to the team. The service was very prompt. Highly recommended. Will definitely be back soon

A lovely meal, I had duck with orange & ginger sauce, my parents had steak & Ale pie, my husband langu burger, all served with chips and pies, my husband had coleslaw also with his.

Best carvery restaurant around but with a great choice of alternative meals if that is not to your taste.
