Booked a table for 5 of us last night and had a fantastic evening. Despite being busy (a good sign) the food was out to us really quickly and all of our party enjoyed it. I had the fish and chips which was incredible. Since Mel and her team have taken over the pub has regained its appeal as the perfect village go to. Well done guys. See you Friday for Karaoke night

I booked this pub for a large family meal whilst we were visiting the area due to the great reviews. When booking I asked if they needed pre-booking for roasts or a deposit as we were such a large group and was told that if we came at a set time it would be fine. When we arrived we were asked if we wanted drinks and then told that they had no beef, 4 chicken (which wasn’t even listed on the menu), 3 gammon and 2 steaks. There were 12 of us at the table at 2:30pm. The lady who served us was quite rude when we asked for a moment to think about it. We would have been happy to make do if it was not for her response to us and continuing to push us to order drinks. I cannot comment on the food as we all promptly left and went elsewhere for food. The other reviews and pictures look very good, it is a shame that we did not have the same experience as others. Perhaps if you are a larger party I would recommend requesting to preorder!

We had 2 pizzas, they were advertisrd as home made and cooked to order. However it was clear that they were shop bought pizzas covered in melted cheese with sparse, uncooked toppings. The tomato sauce base was so tasteless it was like eating cheese on toast. The loos were filthy and wet with leaking rainwater and the toilet paper was mouldy and soaking wet.

I had the most delicious fish pie; well presented and very tasty! I tried the lamb burger the following day which was massive! This is an interesting place - a classic Dartmoor thatched inn in narrow Devon lanes. On one side it is clearly a Devon local's pub, on the other it has a well ordered restaurant that goes beyond pub grub. The food, service and presentation are excellent, without being pretentious. A good menu - with a wide variety of local food on offer. The name of the inn is unusual. Might go back to early medieval times when the inn could have been a mustering point for would be crusaders to Jerusalem. And don't be put off by narrow lanes. There's a good car park nearby.

We were then given a crumpled sheet of paper with the menu on it although crucially no Sunday roast which I had asked about when booking. We asked and beef was available so we ordered 2. It was poor, salty gravy, potatoes with a very harsh garlic taste, half cooked frozen Yorkshire and weird dark beef. Our visit to the Artichoke today was very good. We were well looked after and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food. I hope Acorn will be a frequent visitor.

The service couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming. The food very average. When you have a small menu and very few other customers eating, you need to get it right. One veggie option will not bring me back for food, but the warm atmosphere would.

We had a lovely dinner which was great value. The squid was expertly cooked and the burger was up there with the best homemade burger you can get. The service was very friendly and the overall atmosphere was very welcoming and great fun. Definitely worth a visit.

Stopped for lunch after walking from Lustleigh with a friend on Tuesday 26/3. She had a tasty baguette and I had the most delicious cheesy chips. The service was great, the atmosphere was warm and cosy and the waitress was so welcoming. The cakes looked amazing too. We're planning a return visit soon

We stayed here for two nights on the “2 nights for 1” deal and would gladly do so again if offered. The reviewer who said the place was a bit sad must be able to afford more luxurious places than us as we found it well maintained and the reviewer who said it could be cleaner is obviously living on a different planet! Apart from the receptionist who had only been there 2 weeks, the staff were welcoming and efficient. It was only the chef on duty in the kitchen on the first night that needs talking to: the starter took long enough to come, but the main course took so long that the lady on the bar had the good sense to offer complimentary drinks. And when my sausage & mash came it was swamped in gravy - why not in a boat I wonder! I was looking forward to sea bass but this was off the nexus that night. The banoffee pie was so outstanding, that I had it again on night 2! But why not serve it without cream when asked to? The prawn starter was good enough, but the Canon of lamb main course was to die for! I think 4 choices for both starter & dessert, and 5 mains, is a bit limiting. Room 1 was dog-friendly and had the most stupendous views out of the window - which opened properly to aerate the room. The bed was comfortable - even for me - and there was both wardrobe and 12 drawers. The TV was enormous and well positioned for bedtime viewing. The bath was pleasantly deep but sadly rather wide and so took an age to fill. The expelair was weak which made the bathroom rather stuffy. There was a 12” electric fan in the wardrobe and an extra blanket as the windows are single glazed. The grounds are beautifully kept and dog-friendly with a poo bin. The cooked breakfast on both mornings was excellent. Both fried & poached eggs were expertly done and it was nice to have a coffee machine so that you could choose what you fancy on the day. Sadly no grapefruit juice; just apple & orange. But the best thing was the dish of bacon & sausage for the dog! As many reviewers say, the drive needs resurfacing and the hotel needs to bite the bullet and have it done. Turning left at the lane is also not to be recommended but there is not a road to be seen from the hotel! The hotel is so quiet! Room 1 is above Reception but we never heard the comings & goings of residents. Dogs are neither allowed in the restaurant nor the breakfast room, but there is a large table on one side of the bar and 3 tables on the other side suitable. I would recommend this hotel whether you have a dog or not.
