Having seen The Royal Oak on the 'Great Places to Eat' TV programme, we decided to give it a try. It's a very small pub, with a big garden and an undercovered area with wooden tables. It was packed inside, so The Wife & I took the drinks we'd bought at the bar to a table (shared with another couple) in the undercovered area. Food is ordered at a kiosk overlooking the garden and the choice is pretty much 'Ploughman's lunch or Ploughman's lunch'. However, the Ploughman's can come with cheese, gammon, smoked mackerel, smoked trout pate, quiche, sausage roll or pork pie, and there are vegan and/or vegetarian options available. All are served with warm ciabatta, coleslaw, pickled onions, mixed leaves, chutneys, pickles - fantastic! At £14 per plate, this is great value. Wonderful place... will revisit.

Me and my partner went for spa and afternoon tea, both was absolutely fantastic the spa was relaxing and the afternoon tea was beautiful so much choices and the service man was so polite and welcoming, all staff was welcoming and friendly with big smiles on there faces. The only thing that I can fault was the dust there was so much dust especially under the coffee machine and picture frames. Apart from that was a lovely experience thank you

It's in an idyllic location, and we were very much looking forward to a relaxed lunch there. It's fascinating to read the other reviews which indicate that 'we were made to feel like we were an inconvenience'. Our experience was exactly the same. On entering the pub, which only had one other couple in there, we were met with 'I can't serve you yet - you can see that I'm writing stuff down for other tables'. There was then a conversation with the other couple about the nearby Rufus Stone - the reason that the pub is there, named after the man who killed William Rufus. The barmaid mentioned that she knew nothing about it, and couldn't care less anyway, but there was an information leaflet on the bar, which she hadn't read. She mentioned that it was popular with Americans, probably because William Rufus was an American (note: he was killed nearly 400 years before America was discovered). I can't comment on pricing, as we still hadn't been served 10 minutes later, and just walked out in dismay. Seriously, if you are running a business, take an interest in customers, take an interest in why they have come there in the first place and provide the service they expect. We visit enough pub/restaurants to know how much effort other pub owners put into making their customers feel welcome and valued, but this place hasn't even taken the first step in that direction. I wouldn't have written this review if I thought that this was an isolated incident, but the other recent reviews indicate that there is a pattern of indifference to customers and a tendency to be overwhelmed by minimal levels of business which needs to change if the pub is to survive. They didn't get our business that day, so how much more have they lost for the same reason?

We came to experience a village where my mother's great grandmother originated The pub was a real lived history experience. We chose the scampi and locally made Tatchbury pie. All very filling and satisfying. The decor alone made our trip worthwhile.

Popped in last Friday lunchtime for a snack. A bit out our or way, and our last visit was 20 yrs ago! We had a dog with us, so sat outside in the covered area. Everything very clean, and the BLT Panini's were made with fresh ingredients, and very tasty. Outside , so tea was in a cardboard cup, but decent nevertheless. Could not leave without having an Ice Cream, so had a large cone with 4 scoops of different flavoured ice cream,(For the reviewer who complained it is watery, it is gelato, kind of halfway between ice cream and sorbet). Very good indeed, well prepared fresh food, and great value. Staff were helpful, and would certainly make a detour to visit again

The food was great and the service awesome, there was nothing bad to say, in the opposite everything went over the standard. I would greatly recommend this place. Well done.

My daughter booked this Premir inn as it is very close to Peppa Pig world at Paultons Park for a family weekend away with my 4 year old grandson. We were given our room, the beds were rock hard as were the pillows and there was mould on the bathroom ceiling however on raising this we were told as it was the Easter Bank Holiday they were fully booked. Later that evening the lights in our room went out and would not come back on. We spoke to reception who duly attended and checked the fuse box in our room. This did not work however when they went to the main fuse box they got the lights back on however on my grandson flicked on the bathroom light, bright orange sparks came out the fuse box and light switch. They offered to move us to another room however could not agree which one. The male on reception became very verbally abusive towards us and his young colleague, leaving her in tears, swearing in front of ourselves and other guests. When this was finally resolved my grandson was distraught and I was left to move all our luggage with no offer of assistance. To top it all Premier Inn, despite offering a refund had the gall to take the cost of the room out of my bank over a week later and have not offered any sort of apology or compensation
