It's in an idyllic location, and we were very much looking forward to a relaxed lunch there. It's fascinating to read the other reviews which indicate that 'we were made to feel like we were an inconvenience'. Our experience was exactly the same. On entering the pub, which only had one other couple in there, we were met with 'I can't serve you yet - you can see that I'm writing stuff down for other tables'. There was then a conversation with the other couple about the nearby Rufus Stone - the reason that the pub is there, named after the man who killed William Rufus. The barmaid mentioned that she knew nothing about it, and couldn't care less anyway, but there was an information leaflet on the bar, which she hadn't read. She mentioned that it was popular with Americans, probably because William Rufus was an American (note: he was killed nearly 400 years before America was discovered). I can't comment on pricing, as we still hadn't been served 10 minutes later, and just walked out in dismay. Seriously, if you are running a business, take an interest in customers, take an interest in why they have come there in the first place and provide the service they expect. We visit enough pub/restaurants to know how much effort other pub owners put into making their customers feel welcome and valued, but this place hasn't even taken the first step in that direction. I wouldn't have written this review if I thought that this was an isolated incident, but the other recent reviews indicate that there is a pattern of indifference to customers and a tendency to be overwhelmed by minimal levels of business which needs to change if the pub is to survive. They didn't get our business that day, so how much more have they lost for the same reason?

Happened upon this pub by chance after taking a wrong turn in the road...so glad I'm directionally challenged as my sister and I enjoyed a fantastic lunch of the lightest crispy ciabatta filled with creamy Brie and cranberry sauce, crisp freshly cooked fries and fresh salad. The beer was stunning and the staff were fabulous. Freindly, hospitable and welcoming staff paired with fab food and stunning beer, you can't go wrong.

Table booked for 15, arrived 10mins early into the pub, the land lady’s sister, Carol was behind the bar, we all stood waiting to be seated, she was very abrupt she asked us all to move and not to order any drinks. Still waiting to be seated a new customer came behind us with her little boys she said (carol) they can’t be in here if your getting drinks for outside or il get in trouble, they will have to go out! Then threw a plastic cup across the bar. The customer looks in shock at me and we couldn’t believe what we both had saw. Once we were finally seated we had a wait of nearly an hour for our food which was all pre ordered. Missing items, cold food and Wrong orders. The prices of the food and drinks were absolutely Disgraceful. The only thing good about the pub were the waitresses. They were very polite. This pub is supposed to be child and family friendly I wouldn’t advice anyone with a family to go there, other customers and the land ladies sister where so rude and made us feel very uncomfortable. We would NEVER return there again.

Such a warm and welcoming pub! Mel was an amazing pub landlady! The chef was great and food was fantastic! The pub is in a great location and easy to get to with rufus stone just a short stone’s throw away. Has a campsite attached to the pub and loads of parking around.

The lovely landlady, Mel, made us feel so welcome with friendly and personal service. The chef went out of his way to prepare us delicious food when actually we arrived late and the kitchen was closed - he definitely went the extra mile. We were really well looked after and the Sunday roast was flippin’ gorgeous! The staff were clearly an excellent team who valued each other, which added to the warm and cosy atmosphere. A delightful country pub, which would be a good base for exploring the surrounding New Forest.

The pub is in a nice location, it’s a little tired but we go there as it’s kid friendly. This time we felt the service wasn’t as friendly. They weren’t overly welcoming and were quite inflexible. It’s a shame there’s a separate, smaller menu for the garden and everything is wooden or plastic. Could be much better.

A fantastic forest location, with beautiful views of the surrounding forest, with easy access from the A31 from Ringwood or Bournemouth, and very friendly owners and staff. Traditional country pub with food prepared and cooked on site. Really nice area for sitting outside and a kids play area. There is also a campsite behind. For food, we are plant-based (vegan), and the cheerful young chef (Lee) catered for us very nicely. The rest of the menu looked good, and people around us enjoyed their fish dishes. We went in the evening mid-week in August and it was quiet, and very relaxed. Intermittent phone signal, if important. Great for a forest walk and pub visit!

We went on a Tuesday evening for dinner and had a lovely table with a west facing window, with a view over fields, watching the sunset and the wild ponies and deer. We went for the chicken fricassee and paella - both were really well prepared, cooked and presented. The chicken was fresh and really tasty and the sauce was wonderful. The paella was just as it should be. For desert we had crème brûlée with shortbread and an Italian sundae. We had a good chat with the chef after and his passion for food and cooking really impressed 👍👍

£8.40 for a pint served in a plastic glass! when I queried it I was told I could get £2 back if I returned the glass from the garden. Same pint in my local 20 minutes down the road is £5.30. Lack or staff so I appreciate that. But that is not my fault. Food was expensive and 'ok' but service was slow and not over friendly (staff bringing food out anyway) Sandwiches were £15 odd each and ours came out missing the chutney which is quite important when you have paid for it. Went and and said but it never came out. No offer of a partial refund or anything. Plus the plastic cups deposit scheme for drinks outside is ridiculous when it's busy. Having to queue up for ages to return for deposit. Not the worst place but even though we are fairly local wont be returning. Much better pubs close by. Shame.

What was once a lovely country pub has unfortunately aimed itself too much at the tourism trade. High prices are asked at the bar, yet if you want to eat or drink outside, you get given a cardboard tray and a plastic cup (which you have to pay £2 deposit for! And queue up to get a refund for when you leave). I'm sorry, but at £6-7 a drink and £15-22 per meal, it's not unreasonable to expect proper cutlery, crockery and a glass, plus some waiting service. Of course the real reason they're doing this is so that they don't have to tend to any tables outside and people put used disposable food packaging in the bin for them and there's no glasses to clear, but at the prices they charge, this is too cheeky I'm afraid. Oh and the place is looking rather tired. The rotten benches haven't had a lick of paint for years, the toilets are all old, and the pub furniture could do with updating.

Pub is situated in middle of open forest which is lovely. We chose this pub for a meal with friends as we were looking for somewhere that had a good play area to keep several kids amused- and this place has just that. Had I read the reviews before coming we might have gone elsewhere, but we were there with hungry kids who wanted to play, and for a special occasion, so we stayed. Staff member, lady behind the bar came across as very rude from the offset. Felt like an inconvenience to her. Weird ‘rules’ about eating on disposable plates outside and weird ‘deposit’ required for plastic cups outside (£2 each cup) why real cutlery and plates can’t go outside I don’t know- I think it is so they don’t have to employ the staff to clear the tables. Different menu depending on if you sit outside or in- why it makes a difference who knows. Lady asked us not to order all at once as kitchen gets overwhelmed, out of three couples the lady nearly shut the kitchen before one had ordered (it’s crazy on a Saturday that they can’t deal with a bare minimum of covers) and we were all ordering basically the same meals. So many rules and regulations just to enjoy a lunch. We found it quite funny that they are trying to run a business like they are. No wonder it was pretty much empty. Despite a nice time with friends and fun had by kids, we won’t be returning to this particular place, very very unwelcoming.

It got a bit crowded at that end during the weekend and the pub itself was full. The food is good but we were a bit surprised that we weren't allowed to order until all the people who had booked had arrived. Some of them came in well after us. Not a great experience. Having walked miles to get there, we were very much looking forward to some lovely food, unfortunately, that was not what happened. We both chose our dishes, which upon placing the order, were then told that they didn't have any of the meat for either dish. Once we changed our choices, one of them had to be further changed, due to not having another one of the ingredients. The staff could have simply mentioned this when we were shown the menus. The food was below par, flavourless, and the chicken burger dripped with water. For £60 for 2 main courses, it was disappointing. The staff were not bothered when we explained this at the end of our evening. We would have ordered desserts and more drinks but unfortunately were that disappointed that we did not want to stay.

Having had a lovely drive around the New Forest with mum, we decided it was time to quench our thirst. Of course, being a Sunday, we knew most places were busy to the point we couldn't get through the front door and other places we wanted to avoid due to poor past experiences. We spotted the sign for The Sir Walter Tyrell pub whilst driving through Brook (near Lyndhurst) and decided to chance it. On arrival we could see it was busy in the beer garden with families but thankfully there was a space in the large carpark. We walked in and found an empty table near the door and were greeted by the landlady (wish I had asked her name). She moved us to a bigger table away from the front door and said there were just the two of us she said it wasn't a problem taking up a larger table. I had a sample of an ale I hadn't heard of before, not to my liking I opted for The Green King IPA. Asked if they had a jug and they did. Easier for me to hold. Mum opted for the Mojito, she was very happy with her decision. As we were staying inside we got proper glassware and were able to start a tab. Those outside were given a £2 refundable rigid plastic drinking container. Food and drink had to be ordered at the bar and unsure if running up a tab was available. We were given menus and I was pleasently surprised there were other food options beside the roasts (I'm not a roast lover). I got up to go to the bar to order and was told they would come to the table instead which was nice espicially being rushed of their feet. To start I had the boar pate and it was plentiful and very tasty followed by the seabass. Beautifully presented and extremely delicious. Mum started with the crispy spring rolls that she said were excellent followed by breaded whitebait with homemade tartar sauce served with fries. She looked at mine and wish she had chosen what I had. She said her whitebait was lovely but would've been better as a smaller starter portion. Sadly no room for desert. Will definately be coming back and 100% recommend this pub. A really lovely landlady and great staff members.

Good friendly service, but the problem is that the food is hideously over priced for what it is, and adequate. Beer selection isn't very good.

We stayed in the accommodation above the pub. The landlady was very accommodating and super friendly couldn’t have done more to help us out. Even let us charge our bikes, would definitely be back.

Many years ago this used to be the place to go when a chap called Tony kept it , we went to see what it was like Sorry to say could not hold a candle to the former owner from the 80's who knew how to put food on a table We wont be going again

The food was overpriced and was nudging gastropub prices for very much 'standard' pub grub. Some of the massively thick chips weren't cooked, and the sandwich which we were assured by the waitress (who checked with the kitchen) would be toasted, wasn't toasted. On the upside at least the ingredients seemed fresh. The interior decor was ok but quite tired, and all the seat cushions were strained which was quite off-putting as we couldn't find unstained seats to sit at. In the end we decided to ask for the '10% discretionary tip' to be removed from our bill ... the first time I've ever done that in a restaurant. A pub of this calibre shouldn't be adding tips by default.

Although at the beginning of the season, we were welcomed from day one, as we were starting in the camping field for 10 days. The food is excellent and highly recommended. The service was second to none, and the staff were extremely friendly.

Becky was extremely helpful and attentive, amazing service and so lovely. The food was also really tasty and well worth the wait. Considering it was just Becky serving everyone, she did a fabulous job.

Absolutely love the Tyrrell, great location, good food & drink as well as lovely staff & landlady. My only gripe & maybe others won't agree was the suggested service charge of 10% when paying, tipping is my choice & I declined the charge & did tip as intended but I don't agree with the charge when just 2 people eating. It was the only negative. (For me)

Simply one of the best Sunday Roasts in the New Forest and believe me, I've tried a few. Everything on the plate was sublime. Perfectly cooked medium rare beef, succulent chicken and perfect pork, yes I had the triple Chef Nick brought the roast to the table. Mel and Nick are phenomenal at hosting. It brought a ray of sunshine to a wet and bleak day.

Reliving childhood memories. Used to go here with my sister and parents as a child in the 60's. We were greeted by a very lovely lady, chatty and very friendly. Ordered 2 baguettes 1 with chicken and bacon and 1 with prawn with Marie Rose sauce with chips. A side of coleslaw which was massive 😀 I have a fish allergy so chef did my saute new potatoes instead of chips as they couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be cross contamination. Half a larger and lime and a perfect glass of Guinness. The place doesn't look much different from what I can remember, big outside area, big car park and they accept campers and motorhomes. Overall a lovely few hours and topped off with a quick visit to Rufus Stone.
