Love this place, have been going since it first opened. Style, atmosphere and location is perfect. Great views, easy walking distance to Elterwater, Chapel Stile, Grasmere and Ambleside. Food is always delicious, good portion size and nice menu variation. Cocktails are good and highly recommend the gin and vodka from the nearby distillery. Staff are warm and friendly with good service. Cosy fire in winter.

The Old Stamp House has a small entrance which opens out onto a tardis like restaurant with warm, welcoming decor and delightful staff. Everyone was friendly yet professional, knowledgeable and gave service which was on point but not intrusive. The chef is a delight and, having stressed him with my daughters food intolerances, gave us a taster menu full of excitement and interest. The food was beautifully served, delicious and innovative. There were many special touches, such as the welcome letter with the menu - thank you to everyone for a wonderful evening.

We booked a room and were greeted by a not-so-polite receptionist who told us that kids are not welcome. “We are adult only”. There was no information about this in the booking confirmation or anywhere visible. They kept saying, “We’ve never had guests with kids before; you’re the only ones.” They just managed to guess the hotel rules somehow. Rude. However, the manager was polite enough.

Booked for a birthday treat. Beautiful location. Staff very friendly and prompt service. Nice touches in room and beautiful rooms but windows and bathroom looking slightly tired (helm crag room, no 27). A lot of stairs. Food delicious. Not sure why they didn't use guacamole rather than garden peas (not crushed as per menu) on breakfast with poached egg. Spa is lovely but is only small so gets busy easily and then only chairs are outside.

We arrived mid-afternoon, and not realising they were closing early, proceeded to order lunch for us and our small person. They didn't tell us and let us eat - it was only partway through our meal we realised as the place emptied and the sign on the door mysteriously turned to closed. If we had known / realised, we wouldn't have put them to the trouble. But we were glad we were able to stay because the service was friendly and the food was delicious and filling. And even more special, one of the servers played games and did magic with our little girl, which she thoroughly enjoyed and has been trying to recreate ever since. A lovely place to eat. We will definitely come again - perhaps this time we will pay attention to the signs!

What a wonderful find! Amazing proper pub food which is just the ticket after a day walking in the fells. We loved it so much we came back three times during our week stay in the Lakes. My top tip is the amazing pies with meltingly suet pastry. Good
