Great selection of locally produced organic produce plus meat, dairy and artisan bread and cake produce as well as a good supply of basics such as pasta, rice etc. Ideal for provisions during your stay on Mortonhall campsite with the famous Buffalo farm meat and sausages.

Firstly the staff are amazing, have great banter and are really friendly, also the place is spotless and I have never experienced and hygiene issues ever However since the new ownership took over there has been a change, the pizzas taste nothing like they did before, not sure if it’s cheaper ingredients being used for cost cutting but I have stopped using the friary to get a pizza, and its the same staff making the pizzas as before so not sure why this has happened but it’s not great, we also ordered a donar wrap I was asked if I wanted 2, I didn’t realise why until I got home, then it was clear the portion size didn’t match the price that was paid, maybe this is just some teething problems and the issues with food could be easily fixed, hopefully the new owners will listen to customers feedback and/or get advice from existing staff as it was a great chippy and could easily be restored to its former glory food wise

We were a party of 7, booked in for lunch. All seated by 12.30 (our reservation time) but it took about 15 minutes for us to be asked what we wanted to drink and that was only because I caught the waiter’s attention and told him we were ready order. Fast forward to 1pm, the drinks arrived and again I told the waiter we were ready to order our food. The food was tasty but my own order arrived with chips instead of the mashed potatoes I had asked for - not the end of the world. Once we all finished our mains our dishes sat in front of us for quite a long time. They were cleared and we expected to be brought the dessert menus - they didn’t arrive so I asked for them. Service was poor. The lunch menu is much reduced with only 4 main courses on it to choose from (but there are light bites to choose from as well) Don’t know that we will return - at least, not if the same team are serving

Recently moved to the area and fancied trying this place out for the first time. We ordered a mixture of appetisers and mains. Every single dish was so disappointing. The salt + pepper chicken wings were in a thick and overly salty batter. The spare ribs were over done and dry. The quarter aromatic duck was over done and dry. The Szechuan main dish had prawns in it despite not being mentioned in the menu! Red flag from an allergy perspective! Worst of all, the Thai starter prawns were not properly cooked through. Straight from the freezer, into the deep fat fryer and not piping hot inside. What an absolute disappointment. Definitely not going back.

Where do I start? I booked a table for 8pm on 15th December 2024 for my family and I. Upon arrival we were shown to our table and told someone would be with us shortly. The restaurant was relatively quiet at this point. After 15 minutes of staff ignoring us a young staff member who’s personal hygiene was questionable approached us and asked if we would like some thing to drink. We all ordered soft drinks. At this time we asked to be moved tables as we felt quite cramped in the area we were in. I didn’t think this would be an issue as the restaurant was quiet. I was told there were no other tables available. A short time later the staff member arrived and put down 5 bottles of coke and 7up. At this time we realised there was a slug on one of the bottles. The staff member apologised and removed the slug but left us with the bottles. He did not supply glasses so I assume he expected My wife to drink out of the bottle that the slug had just been attached to. I then informed another member of staff of this who told the original staff member to supply glasses. He did this but offered no apology and offered no ice for the drinks. The next issue - I approached the food service area and ordered my selection of food. I noted that there were hardly any selection of vegetables or potatoes. I also noted that the service area was filthy with food that had clearly spilled over and had been sat there for some time. I then had the unfortunate experience of approaching the gravy counter. Again this was filthy (photo attached). I then realised that we hadn’t even been supplied cutlery. Once sat down to begin my meal, after I had to approach the bar staff as there was not any waiting staff to be seen to collect cutlery I looked around me and noted that the walls were covered in stains and had clearly not been cleaned in a long time. (Photo attached). I then looked up to see that the ceiling was mouldy. (Another photo attached). We were then pretty much ignored again by staff and were not approached until we asked for the bill. We then had the pleasure of paying over £92 for this experience. This experience has quite possibly been the worst experience I have ever had at any restaurant I have ever been too. My wife holds a food hygiene certificate due to her line of work and noted that staff overalls were dirty, staff were behind the serving counter, not wearing protective equipment with their hair not covered. I think I would have preferred to have eaten at Fawlty Towers.

When things go well it's very good - plenty of seating outside in the nice weather and there will be plenty space inside when (if?) they get they Saddle Room finished. However, when it is busy things can go downhill. Staff are pleasant but could be better organised and there doesn't seem to be anyone in charge. As a result it can often run out of things including beer and glasses (be prepared to get served in a plastic container if you are sitting outside at busy times). Booking is essential at peak times and the kitchen closes quite early.
