We ate breakfast here twice and found it to be very poor quality. The lukewarm buffet food was clearly of the budget variety, dried out and very greasy (cheap, fatty sausages, tasteless, dried out bacon, greasy fried eggs which I'm guessing were battery-farmed as they had no taste either, and warmed up tasteless and tough tomatoes. The toast was ok. Little plastic-wrapped squares of cheese on the cold buffet. And the 'restaurant' itself was not open any lunchtime or evening over a six-week period. We were told by the owner this was because the chef was off sick.

The restaurant was spotlessly clean and had a happy, peaceful ambiance. The seating was comfortable, tables elegantly set and the cooked Scottish breakfast was delicious. For me, an added bonus is that no animals are allowed on the premises as I am allergic to them.

Wow. I was actually staying at the very unwelcoming run down place next door - but came to Aaron lodge for dinner. I was instantly made to feel welcome, was offered a glass of wine and the owners had a nice chat to me. So friendly. I actually had a look at one of the rooms while I was there - they look very comfortable and infinitely better than the cold drab room (for the same price) next door. My self and a group of friends ( party of 10 in total) have just return from all I can say was a great all round experience. A very warm and friendly welcome, great advice and recommendations of attractions to visit etc. We were told how to save money in the form of getting a day pass on the bus. Which we defiantly got our monies worth from. And the owner and his wife couldn't do any more to make is feel welcome. The room was very nice and spacious, spotlessly clean, plenty of towels etc. We had breakfast and it too was a very pleasant experience, very helpful hosts, full choice of cooked breakfast, cereals, fresh fruit and fresh fruit juices. Couldn't be faulted at all. Service for clearing the table was very good as it's not nice to have lots of plates etc around while you enjoy your food. For us to be a very large group of ladies to kept happy I can clearly say we were, and we were well cared for and the owner and his wife I would say bent over backwards above and beyond their call of duty !!!!Would recommend to all my family and friends. Also hope to visit again and soon I hope. Thanks so much x

I feel letdown by trip advisor this place had a rating of 22 out of over 1600 in Edinburgh. So I was expecting good things. It was a Tuesday night on a cold November but a warm welcome was afforded to us once we had found the less than obvious entrance at the back. However I was surprised to find just a single price (£23) three course menu was on offer especially as there were only about Half a dozen choices. The food although basic was reasonable. But by 9 o'clock the place was empty and we felt as if we should move on.

I am a retired teacher in my mid sixties. Today I visited this restaurant with my 2 adult sons.We eat out regularly but didn't want to go into the city centre. We were treated to a very warm welcome. We were the only customers in the restaurant which was beautiful. It was chilly but we were seated near a fire. Starters were good.I then had Balmoral chicken & my eldest son had steak pie, both of which were really good. My youngest son ordered a medium rare Aberdeen Angus steak. This was not so good. It was not medium rare & was mostly overdone. The host was very attentive and asked if everything was fine. When we had finished our meal he asked if we had enjoyed the meal. We replied that it was good but the steak had been overdone (most of it was uneaten). The proprietor walked away & moments later stormed back with the plate & proceeded to cut up the leftover steak, while ranting about the steak being medium rare & that his chef was 55 years old & knew how to cook steak. We were stunned & once again asked for our bill.He stormed off & returned with the chef & the plate while he continued with his rant. I was embarrrassed. Once again we asked for the bill only to be told that he didn't need our money & there was no charge. This waiver was not offered as an apology. Again we asked for the bill & stated that we would rather pay then leave. We were ushered out.I have never been spoken to in that manner. The tone was aggressive, insulting & unneccessary. Totally unprovoked. We did not complain, merely answered his question politely.

We had booked a table at the Aaron Lodge Conservatory Restaurant, relying only on reviews from TripAdvisor. Once there, we were welcomed very warmly by the owner. We felt like long-time friends of the family. After these first very positive impressions, we were taken to our table. Ted presented us the menu with various dishes available. I opted for the steak, my wife chose the chicken. The food was divine. The Merlot, Ted had recommended was delicious. The dessert proved to be the icing on the cake (literally) of an entertaining, culinary evening in the restaurant. Best of all was that we were chauffeured by Ted to our hotel, so to speak, a small sightseeing tour of Edinburgh by night, free of charge.

I was booked into the Lodge and was urged to have dinner in the Conservatory by the owner. We were definitely not disappointed! Price was right (22 pounds for a 3 course meal), and the restaurant is really quite a lovely setting. Ted took our orders, and he was as enthusiastic and thrilled about the dinner as he is about his property (quite endearing, really). I had the Chicken Balmoral, and it was absolutely divine. First time having haggis, definitely won't be the last. The starter of goat cheese tart was lovely, as was the dessert. Everything, including the pastry dough, was made in house by the chef and it showed. Dad had fish and chips, which is almost a misnomer - a far cry from a chippy, it was fabulous! We only had one night free to dine here, and I am very glad we did. I would definitely come again, especially as it is open to non-residents as well.

The proprietors were extremely helpful. The evening meal which we had was exceptionally well cooked, and presented. I had a steak which I have to say was the most delicious steak I have eaten in any restaurant in many years, cooked to perfection, and very tender, a restaurant where 'medium' is exactly that. The fish my husband ordered was beautifully cooked too. I would recommend Aaron Lodge, for its lovely accommodation, friendly staff, and excellent cuisine. C & D /D

My mother and I stayed at the guesthouse next door, and wandered over to Aaron Lodge for dinner. The host (Ted) seated us in the lounge and asked us what we would like to drink. I ordered a White Zinfendel, but Ted thought I'd rather have red wine. (No, you don't want that! You want this!) He was so friendly and entertaining, we were really enjoying ourselves. He showed us the menu and asked what we would like for our starters. (Menu was one price, came with starter, meal, and dessert.) I told him that I didn't really want a starter, but he told me that I did, and ordered me the Haggis. Now, I've always wanted to go to Scotland, but I swore that I would never eat Haggis. When Ted brought it to me, he was so happy with himself that I couldn't deny him. I had a few bites to show that I could be a good sport. (It was fine, but not something that will become a part of my diet.) I ordered the steak for dinner, which was very thin. I expect that's the norm in the UK, not like in the US where steak is very thick. The flavor was very good, as were the sides. I had the apple pie for dessert and it was excellent. Oh, and by the way, Ted eventually brought me my white zinfendel. The total was 50 pounds for the two of us, which was probably the most we spent on any meal during our trip. But as we got "dinner and a show," it was worth every penny. When dinner was over, we had not finished the bottle of red wine, so he sent us "home" (next door) with our glasses and the rest of the bottle. He was such a character and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. He acted like we were old friends and truly wanted us to have a great time while we were in Edinburgh. It's too bad that we did not stay at the B&B as well.

Had our evening meal here on the second night of our stay at the Aaron lodge and were not disappointed. Ted greeted us warmly and led us to our table, delivered our bottle of wine and poured it for us, as I am rubbish at deciding what to order Ted gave me advice about what he would suggest, which seemed to be everything lol! I had the fish cakes to start which were gorgeous, my other half had the haggis starter which he really enjoyed. I had the beef and Guinness pie with chips which were really fine, very moreish. My partner had the fish pie which he was so impressed by he passed on his compliments to the chef, I had a forkful of his and it was very good, creamy and tasty with loads of chunky fish and prawns.. But was not allowed any more.. For sweet I had the creme brûlée which was lovely with a gorgeous crispy sugar crust. My partner had the homemade apple pie, he is a bit of an apple pie/crumble lover and usually has it when it's a pudding option and is quite hard to please, but he said it was the best apple pie he has had! Clearly homemade, beautiful pastry with big chunks of apple and lovely creamy custard.Service was speedy, very friendly, our wine glasses were kept topped up, and in between courses plates were quickly removed and ted and dot chatted to us about our day out at the castle.Would recommend this restaurant, if you stay at the guesthouse definitely don't miss out on an evening meal here! Very sensibly priced and the kind of friendly, efficient service of proud owners that you don't get in a large mainstream restaurant. Will visit again :)

Drove out the hospital and 500 metres towards Edinburgh and we came accross the Aaron Lodge. When we arrived we were met by the owner (Dot) came out to see if she could help as it was 16.30 and the restaurant didnt open until 17.00. She invited us in and made us feel so welcome, gave us a drink and spoke to the chef to see if he could start early. The chef agreed and Dot left us watching the football scores in the small lounge and looking over the menu. Ted then arrived to take our order, waited 25 mins for our food as it is all cooked from fresh which is great and it was lovely and hot. Ted was very attentive making sure everything was fine and ensuring we were enjoying our food. The food (piri piri chicken) was lovely piping hot and very tasty. I stayed at Aaron Lodge this week to celebrate my birthday. My partner and I were given complimentary wine as soon as we were seated in the lovely conservatory dining area. The service we were given was first class and the food on both nights of our stay was the best we have had in a long time. I am normally fussy when it comes to meat and tend to stick with chicken dishes, however I decided to try the steak and Guiness pie which was tender lean meat and delicious. I have been to well known more expensive hotels through my job and found the food not half a s good as the food produced by Ronnie the Chef at the Aaron lodge. It was quite nice and good for a small guest house outside Edinburgh Centre but def. not number 1. I am sad that visitors to Edinburgh may think this is the best our fine city has to offer.Food was Average to Good, Steak was excellent and chips were lovely. However i wasn't allowed them- i don't eat steak and tried to swap my potato for chips to be told, quite abruptly Chef wont do that.In a pretty conservatory, nicely converted but next to a loud, busy and very visible road it just dosent have the atmosphere i was looking for and the service was ok but not spectacular like some of these reviews. What was a great touch by the owners is the shortish menu which was much appreciated. When there is so much on offer it is often very difficult to make up your mind. Although not an extensive menu, there is plenty there to whet your appetite, all at an inclusive price of £22.50. mmmmm the goats cheese tart to start was to die for. I was intrigued how and why a restaurant linked to a guest house well outside the centre of Edinburgh was top rated of 1190 restaurants. Now I know!!There is so much that is great about this restaurant - beginning with a very warm and personal welcome from Ted. Just the beginning of highly attentive and friendly service throughout the evening. The restaurant is based in a long conservatory - certainly a perfect environment on a warm light August evening. In the end however it is the food that is the main "hero" Haggis and scotch broth were highly contrasting starters - but both were full of flavour in their very different ways. Balmoral chicken and fillet steak provided the main courses - both perfect in every way. Both us had apple pie to finish which was equally tasty. All this for £22.50 per person. Oustanding experience - even more outstanding value for money. I could not be be more pleased that we took the trouble to take the short journey from the centre of Edinburgh for what turned out to be be one of the best value and enjoyable meals we have had anywhere in the world.

We visited Aaron lodge to celebrate my fathers 70th in mid June. I had spent a lot of time researching as being a Great cook himself it can often be hard to find a restaurant that has food he really enjoys. We were not disappointed, the owners were possibly among the nicest hosts you could meet and the food they served was amazing. We were in a group of 5 adults and 2 kids under 5. There was no kids menu so they specially prepared chiken breasts cut into nuggets dipped in bread crumbs and seasoning which the 2kids loved followed by a huge ice cream each, they had a ball. The adults meals are a selection of dishes served over 3 courses. Every course was delicious and there was not one disappointed person at our table although I wish I ha been more adventurous and had the chicken and black pudding rather than the steak as having tried my partners it was possibly the stand out dish. Cannot thnk the owners enough as they truly went out of there way to make it a great night for us.A note to the reviewer who gave an average review, perhaps try before you judge! Unfair to knock somebody's ratings down without eating, it is a restaurant review after all. After our visit here we spent 3 weeks visiting many areas of Europe both myself and partner agreed that Aaron lodge was deffinately in our top 3meals of our trip.Keep it up guys, you got a great thing going.

We dined at this restaurant as the result off winning a meal for two as a raffle prize, and would not have considered coming otherwise,as we stay at the other side of the city. However having experienced the friendly atmosphere created by the owners, Dot & Ted,and tasted the quality and freshness of the food, and the service, which were all excellent,we will certainly return and would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to friends and family.

Our stay at the Aaron lodge was quintessentially outstanding in the respect of cleanliness, friendliness and convenience of location for our purpose. We have stayed in many hotels during our travels and it was so refreshing to have the personal touch that the proprietors Ted & Dot gave in abundance. The food was well presented and cooked to perfection, the ambiance in the dining room was both pleasant and relaxed which in essence equates to very happy guests.

We arrived by taxi at the conservatory restaurant Aaron lodge, it was pouring with rain. Immediately the door was opened and we were greeted by a smiling face and made very welcome. The menu was fairly limited but sufficient dishes to choose from, a three course meal for £22-50 was very good value for money. Each course was simply presented but the quality was superb. Ted and Dot are attentive without being overbearing. When we were ready to leave Ted had arranged for one of his friends to take us back to our accommodation a lovely gesture and much appreciated. We certainly recommend this restaurant and from other comments on the accommodation this is a place we would like to stay if the opportunity presents itself.

We stumbled upon Aaron Lodge when looking for somewhere for lunch (which they don't serve) but were convinced to come back for dinner by the menu and the friendliness of the owners. All three of us got different menu items and everything we ordered was amazing. My dinner was delicious and everything tasted unbelievably fresh. The owners (Ted and Dot) were the waitstaff at dinner and they were solicitous and chatty without being overbearing. This was definitely one of the highlights of my trip and I look forward to staying at the hotel next time I visit Edinburgh.

We had dinner in the restaurant on Saturday and can only say fantastic. The Aberdeen Angus Steak was second to none, suculent and perfectly cooked. The starter of Goats Cheese tart was delicious as was the poached peaches, strawberries and ice creamThe price was more that reasonable £23 for a 3 course a la carteI would highly reccommend, you will not be disapointed

I enjoy eating out and this experience was one of the best I have had. The homemade soups were a great way to start but the main courses were even better. I had the steak one evening and this was so succulent and made you wish it would not end. But the other main that I had (on a different evening!) surpassed even that - the Chicken Balmoral. I have never tasted Chicken Balmoral like this - it was a different level from most restaurant food I have tasted - this is highly recommended. I always have cheeseboard at the end of a meal and that can be hit or miss. Not so here, a selection of 5 different cheeses, all extremely flavoursome. Accompanied by Quince jelly, grapes and some 'to die for' thin oatcakes. All rounded off by Ted and Dot's friendly service. I will be back and you should give it a try.

lovely little place to eat and the food was just as good , if not better, than some of the restaurants we ate in , in the city. Definitely try this. You do not have to be a guest at the lodge to eat here. The value for your money is superb!

We are a little predictable when it comes to food, or at least my husband is! We both had soup of the day, which was a lovely spicy lentil and chilli, fantastic flavours, really hot with a fresh roll. this was followed by 10 oz steak that simply melted in your mouth, the best steak we have ever had, with home made chips to die for, along with the usual mushrooms tomato and onion rings, all perfectly presented. Finally we had the most amazing apple pie and anglaise, nice and hot, total recommend this instead of a pricey restaurant in the city centre.

As a family we could not have asked for a nicer place. Ted & Dot the owners were outstanding. The food was outstanding and the chef even catered for our 7 year son. I would highly recommend the Aaron Lodge for a nice quiet meal for 2 or even a group as you are made to feel very welcome and like part of their family. It's a must if you haven't. Been already. Thanx Ted & Dot for making us feel so welcome. We will definately be back. The Brown's

This welcoming space was across the street from our hotel. Although service was on the slower side, it was made to order and very good. The restaurant was light and clean and a perfect place for a leisurely breakfast.
