Absolutely amazing coffee shop, charmingly small with amazing staff and incredible coffee!

Nice selection of appealing cakes and pastries and the coffee was quite pleasant. However.. and this will divide the crowd...we got thrown out after 1hr 30mins... not sure why? Hadn't bought enough to stay longer?..or we were to "loud"? I was meeting up with my cousin whom I hadn't seen since his mother died almost 4yrs ago and we are both retired gentlemen 67 and 66yrs old. It wasn't a very nice experience. Waiter came and cleared the table and basically told us he needed us to leave. There were other tables available and it wasn't a particularly busy time. I was embarrassed! Won't go back.

Found this place on a morning walk in Edinburgh and could not have been luckier; had one of the best coffee flight ever and some banana bread alongside; all pastries and coffees we ordered were divine. Must go to coffee shop in Edinburgh

Hands down the best cappuccino I’ve ever had!

Beautiful little place underground, discovered by chance. The service was lovely, so as the cappucino. I had a slice of the amaretto cheesecake, just wow so flavourfull. Will come again.

LOWDOWN has been my favorite cafe while on a trip to Edinburgh. The place has a casual confidence that made me feel at ease. The cafe has a very open layout. There is little separation between the seating and staff area. You can see everything. They have nothing to hide. Excellent food and coffee plain and simple. For food there is a selection of pastries and sandwiches. The sandwiches have a great variety of ingredients. This is not a simple ham and cheeses sandwich. There was interesting flavor and texture the whole way through. The food being prepared in the open shows everything that goes into it and the care taken. For coffee I spoke with Chun who gave me a detailed run down of the coffees available. I went with a coffee flight consisting of filter, espresso, and espresso with milk. Chun gave spot tasting notes without hesitation. The staff is clearly knowledgeable and care about coffee. (filter coffee shown in image for details). Coffee flight cost ~ £11 (varies based on coffees available at the time. If you enjoy coffee, if it is a passion, hobby, or something you want to learn about I highly reccomend LOWDOWN.

Love this place, the food is delicious the service is always on point and the atmosphere is great, my husband me and my son really enjoy our Sundays brunch here.

The cakes at this cafe were delicious and moist, and the coffee was great—something we kept thinking about after we left. The service was friendly, and the interior was clean and well-organized, there were also tables to sit outside. A great place to stop by!

This coffee shop definitely stands out as being a highlight of visiting Edinburgh and that is saying something. The staff were so lovely and the vegan carrot cake to die for. Most certainly the best cup of coffee I have tasted for a while. I am so happy that we stumbled upon it as we navigated the city. I will be visiting again when we are next in the city 😍

We loved our stop at Lowdown! It was very busy on a Saturday morning, but they kept things moving well. The coffee was great and my husband said it was the best avocado toast he’s ever had and he wants to try to replicate it 😂

This is was my go to and will be my go to coffee shop in Edinburgh. I can’t fault it really. I had all their coffee preparations and they are all great. Flat white, pour over, espresso, and long black. All great. Also, shout out to the cinnamon bun. Honestly it’s the best I’ve ever had. And it’s vegan! Highly highly recommended.

Being in the vicinity and as a break from running errands, we thought we would check this place out - and I am so glad we did! The cakes were delicious and the chai latte is one of the best I have had. The staff were welcoming and friendly, doting on our slightly nervous sausage dog Toby, making him feel right at home🥰

An absolute must visit! This cafe is so cute and run very well. Everyone is super friendly and the coffee is delicious. Bonus points for beautiful avocado toast and ambience!

I was only in Edinburgh for a couple of hours and Lowdown was a recommended spot on my list. Cute space in town, got settled, offered water of the bat. Great! Got two coffees, fw and fw+o - can hands down say its one of the best milky coffees I’ve had in some time. Super fruity and aromatic. I loved it however I could see why that may not appeal to all. I think the space is in its transitional phase as the vibe and customers are not so coffee centric and visually looks more like a cosy space. Also noticed lots of staff working for such small space.

Been back a few times in the last few years, drawn by some great coffee and some tasty food options. They weighed in enough that it was easy to ignore the minimal seating (with half of it outside) and the hit and miss customer service. I went back today and the 11 food items had been reduced to 3; avo toast, burrata toast, and a banana choc bread. So off I popped to somewhere else without getting anything. Honestly I don't know if i'll bother coming back. If I do, it will be for a takeaway coffee, which I hope is as good as it once was. *Ammended out of respect for the reply* i'll give the benefit of the doubt on the toilets and remove it. This part i've based on overhearing customers leaving alongside me stating they overheard another customer being told there wasn't one, and may not be reliable. I have not sat inside, and cannot say I have seen the toilet (or lack of one) personally. The rest I respectfully stand by. Whilst I appreciate there are reasons for the food options being reduced, I came for food and left because nothing on the menu was desirable. This last visit you were busy, yes. But you often are, and the customer service has been variable throughout my experiences. You have done well with the space, but it is small. And whilst I'm thrilled you are roasting and using high quality suppliers, it does not reduce my concerns.

The staff were very patient and took their time explaining the coffee. They were really attentive and it was the best experience. The coffee was amazing and so flavourful!

Cool spot, flat white was faultless

I was really surprised at how bad the coffee was. The ambience is very nice. The staff were kind, service was fast, and the latte art was really pretty. We had flat whites. I couldn’t drink mine, as it tasted so bad. It’s strange, it didn’t taste of coffee at all.

I only had a flat white. It was excellent. They seem to care about the coffee they're selling - currently you can't buy what they're serving so they seem invested in giving customers an excellent in house product!

Pensado para tomar solo cafés, pero no pude resistir los deliciosos pasteles una vez que los vimos en el mostrador. Tuvimos la suerte de conseguir una mesa tan gastada una hora más o menos disfrutando de nuestros cafés, pasteles y el ambiente frío.

Stinking attitude from a member of staff, we have entered the coffee shop, and with an attitude he said” can i help you?” , we then ask where can we sit and he says “right!” We then go to take a seat and he starts to shake his head, instead of talking like a normal person. We left the shop due to the rudeness and attitude. Wouldn’t recommend it

Best coffee in Edinburgh, not to mention the cleanest floors.

Went to lowdown to sit in for a coffee as I’d heard such good things, even with such high praise around the shop I was impressed. The coffee itself was amazing, perfect milk texture, dialled in beautifully and picture perfect latte art. Water brought to the table without asking, and filled up when needed, coffee & cakes brought to the table. I was sat outside so I could have a smoke and even had an ashtray brought over to me. One thing I will say, after your original purchase, the service goes way down hill. They’d rather you drink your coffee and leave immediately. I like to sit in coffee shops and read for a couple of hrs, I make up for holding the table by purchasing multiple drinks so they don’t lose out on sales, yet still feel as if they’d rather I just left. Another down side to the place is the lack of accessibility, it’s down a flight of stairs, but can understand there’s not much they can do about this.

One of the best in Edinburgh. 10/10 selection of retail coffee. Thankfully, no dark roasts :)

Lowdown Coffee is my favourite coffee shop in Edinburgh. The coffee is consistently excellent. The staff and owner spend a lot of time dialing in coffee so it tastes as good as it can. The pastries are also great!

Undoubtedly the most delicious of London's cafes. The breakfast is avocado with eggs, my brother, very delicious, and the coffee is beyond amazing. The staff are nice and helpful, and the service is fast. I strongly recommend it.

El personal más rudo que he encontrado. Mi marido y yo hemos visitado muchas cafeterías y esto tenía el personal más rudo que hemos encontrado. Vinimos el domingo para tomar un café para llevar el lugar es peculiar y dulce, pero la chica que sirve era un horror mi marido simple preguntó si podía tener un poco de hielo para su americano y ella respondió groseramente si quieres café con hielo hay otras cafeterías en el camino que hacen eso! Simplemente innecesariamente. El personal y el servicio es todo en estos lugares y ella nos dejó tan enfadado que quería salir, pero mi marido tomó el café. Aunque el café era bueno el servicio no lo era. No pierdas el tiempo aquí hay muchas más cafeterías pequeñas y buenas en Edimburgo que valorarán tu costumbre a diferencia de esta. No volveremos pronto.

Vine a probar este café como me recomendó mi amigo y ahora entiendo por qué. El café era excepcional, como nada más que haya probado. La presentación y la explicación fueron puntuales. El servicio fue increíble y generalmente disfruté de mi tiempo allí. Tuve el pan de plátano tostado y desearía poder tenerlo todos los días jaja. Definitivamente volveré.

Mi novio y yo visitamos Lowdown por cuarta vez durante nuestro fin de semana en Edimburgo, ya que nos encantó tanto - es realmente un café - el sueño de los amantes! Ambos pedimos un vertido - más y el barista explicó las notas únicas de los frijoles que estaban usando ese día. Se puede decir que obtienen solo los mejores frijoles de primera categoría y los preparan con cuidado. No podría estar más en desacuerdo con la sugerencia del personal grosero, ya que cada visita el personal era amable, bien informado y claramente apasionado por lo que hacen. Estaban más que dispuestos a charlar sobre el proceso de elaboración, judías recomendadas para la elaboración casera y también lugares para visitar en Edimburgo durante nuestra estancia. Es una vergüenza absoluta que alguien diga lo contrario y desacredite una joya oculta tan hermosa. Ya sea que seas un conocedor del café o alguien que aprecia una buena taza, ¡añádela a tu lista! Lowdown Coffee es una joya escondida en Edimburgo para los amantes del café. El derrame fue impecable, suave, rico y lleno de profundidad. Possibly the best spot for speciality coffee in town!

I tried their coffee, delicious salted caramel brownies and delicious lemon cake He has amazing Colombian filter coffee, and without exaggeration, it is the most delicious coffee I have ever tried in my life. The day I wanted to buy the same coffee, it turned out to be sold in a small bag of 100 grams and its value is 20 pounds. It is an astronomical price because the crop is rare, but for lovers of elite crops, you will like it.

I genuinely enjoyed the coffee here! The baristas looked very cool and experienced, and gave a very detailed explanation of the coffees they had on offer for pour-over. Having to walk down the stairs I was seated on a quaint little area within the cafe. I had a pastry which was quite good although it was the last one on offer, which was paired with quite a great pour over, in such a cute cup! The cup was genuinely the best part of all. I must say this cafe is now part of my top three cafe's in Edinburgh!

Visited yesterday and got the tasting flight and it was great. Place has a nice European coffee shop feel to it and the staff are very knowledgeable about what they sell. Visited other speciality coffee shops on my Edinburgh trip but lowdown was the best.

This is such an amazing cafe in many ways! Loooove the setting, the coffee is dripped right from heaven and the avocado toast is one of the best I had! I recommend strongly but please don’t promote this on instagram as a hidden gem and ruin the vibe!

Visited last week for some filter coffee and espresso. Coffee was excellent! Cafe is in a great location too so you can’t be forgiven if you go to Starbucks/black sheep next door - come here instead! Don’t be afraid to ask staff about the coffees and they’ll chat you through them.

One of the best coffee places in Edinburgh. Knowledgeable staff who care for the cup they provide. Always new coffee in which provides variety and different experiences. Service is always great. Excellent food too… from an avid Avo Toast fan its top! Much better than the dross coffee on offer else where.

Would have loved to try the coffeeshop but was told they can’t serve milk alongside americano. Appreciate you might want to stick to classic coffee drinks but coffee with milk is really a staple wherever you go.

Edinburgh cafe goat.... I can't remember any coffee shops in Edinburgh that only taste like milk, this is the best. This is the only Flat White that brings out the flavor of the coffee beans well. The long black also smells really good. The guy with glasses is kind and cool.

The place is small but it has a very nice atmosphere and super and cool people working there. The most important thing is the food 🥑 it's so delicious as you see in the picture 😉 and the guy recommended me a espresso 100% my taste. Thank you! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

They're so friendly and the coffee is the best. I had a flat white, and even though it was espresso-based, I was surprised by the aroma and fruity taste of the coffee beans. The balance between milk and coffee is also good. It was a coffee with a strong aroma that Koreans like. This is my first time seeing a flat white like this.

What a bland, boring ‘coffee shop’. The guy taking my order couldn’t have been further up himself and his self confidence was impressive for someone who cremated the milk in my flat white. The food was average but unfortunately the service from the member of staff left a distasteful taste in my mouth - not only from the coffee. Lowdown? The only thing that’s lowdown here is the quality of the coffee, food and service

The avocado toast was genuinely the best I’ve ever had. And as an Aussie obsessed with brunch culture, I’ve had a lot. I’d probably skip the hot chocolate next time and order double avo toast.

This incredible coffee shop and cafe had the best pour over I've ever had in my life. We ended up going here three times during our short stay in Edinburgh. You definitely should try to visit when you're in the area. I would recommend trying to get a table so you can enjoy their breakfast as well.

Properly made coffee, none of the overheated trash you usually get around the UK. Excellent baked goods too, overall worth a visit.
