The Stables at Mortonhall - Bar & Restaurant in Edinburgh, City of

One of our party has multiple allergies. Staff were very helpful and double checked with her regarding the menu. We all enjoyed the food but the ploughman's lunch being served as a sandwich was slightly disappointing. Hot smoked salmon salad was excellent.

Access can be a bit tricky if you have a pram/wheelchair. Because of the paving, maybe there's a lane of sort. I didn't see it. But t worth the effort. Decent range of drinks. Family place and back room for functions of you needed that service. Good service.

A quick stop for lunch brought us into The Stables Restaurant at Mortonhall.. It’s in a very nice setting with a nice courtyard if you would like to be outside for a drink or food on a hot day. We were just looking for a quick lunch so ordered one Fish & Chips and one Steak Pie & Chips. Food was ok , some of it very hot which we like but some veg just lukewarm and limp.

Good ok but not well presented. Ploughman’s lunch was just a ham n cheese sandwich (not on sourdough as described) and a few chips, very disappointed

Great dining room and bar area. Decent if small breakfast menu, but the food came out quickly, was good sized portions and tasty. Reasonable pricing and good staff

So glad we decided to try this place out - very good all round food amazing just very big portions - very calm quiet and relaxing - we'll be back

Funeral tea for 25 guests. Sandwiches and scones were great. Plenty of tea and coffee. Nice, comfortable area - plenty of room for everybody. Thanks.

This is pub grub. Doing breakfast rolls etc in the morning then offering a simple menu with typical choices, fish n chips, steak pie etc Just 2 in our party, scampi & chips & chicken ceasar salad. Both well cooked & presented. Salad was very tasty & lots of it. Had cake of the day with coffee/tea. Service was efficient & staff all friendly. Reasonable value for money, nothing fancy, decor old rustic & had a good atmosphere. We will definitely eat there again!! Dogs very welcome. Great for walkers.

There was a communication glitch in the first instance after I initially booked. There could also have been better communication confirming what I'd requested for our funeral tea. However I was informed that there had been problems with their internet and e-mail. We got there in the end and I was happy with the food and service we received. I would return again! It's a busy place with a nice relaxing atmosphere and the staff are helpful and pleasant.

A very special end to the day after having some time roaming the nearby fields and seeing some highland. The truffle mac and cheese was delicious and I highly recommend to order the chocolate brownie! The staff were all kind and helpful. I recommend coming here to escape the busy city center for a bit.

Enjoyed my visit to the Stables resturant. We hae been there often. Was a bit uncomfortable with the strong paint thinners smell, but I understand open windows are not an option at this time of year. Would not put me off returning.

Excellent place, best for a cosy pub meal alone, as a couple, with the family and your furry friend. The service is good, unobtrusive, and yet attentive. Over the years, this eatery has gone from strength to strength. It offers its clientele traditional pub food with unexpected "specials". The Stables also caters for larger parties who can hire a separate room fir their function. There is also generous parking.

Enjoyed our visit to the Stables Bar. Unfortunately the meal was spoiled by the “Dogs Chorus” barking. Don’t want to share our meal with our canine friends!

Fantastic place to spend your holidays, served by buses to Edinburgh and the airport, the only flaw is the games room closes at 5pm and the restaurant closes at 7.30pm... the service can definitely be improved

We were a large group of 24 seated in 4 separate tables. We had a really good dinner. The waiter was very patient and polite. We highly recommend this place.

First time checking this place out. My wife and I both got the Sunday roast. It was soooo good! Only complaint would be it was quite salty (maybe the gravy?). But would still recommend and will definitely be back! Note: if you have an aversion to dogs you may want to avoid as there are ton of them. We love them and was quite pleased to see so many!

Great service and excellent quality and value food. I ordered the fish finger ciabatta but unfortunately they had run out of ciabattas but we were still provided with lovely thick slices of sourdough bread instead.

Food was delicious and came soon after ordering . We both had blt with chips and coleslaw . There was an option to add soup for £2 which seemed a bargain but would have been too much for me for lunch . Shame there wasn’t an option for just soup and sandwich that was offered before Christmas . But do highly recommend at Stable Bar .

Great pub with good character and chat.

I have enjoyed a bar meal at the Stables on numerous occasions over the years but yesterday I was one of the many customers heading for the exit. It was 12:30pm, the height of the lunch period, there was a sheet covering the bottom end of the lounge/eating area and from behind this sheet came the noise of workers hammering bolsters into the masonry followed regularly by the deafening noise of electric drilling/chiseling tools. The staff had been left to manage this intolerable environment. They had attempted to contact the manager at my request unsuccessfully. The racket continued so we left, along with several other groups and doubtless others who arrived later. Who on earth could possibly imagine this was an environment conducive to either eating or social interactions? This work should never have been undertaken during business hours and displayed a contempt for paying customers that is disgraceful and will surely lead to huge loss of trade and the reputation built up over many years of it is not addressed IMMEDIATELY! Furthermore the formerly interesting menu had been reduced to standard fare another factor which together with the lack of respect for customers will only result in people going elsewhere.

The staff did a flawless job for a funeral buffet - lots of food, good quality and excellent service, both in the organisation and on the day. If you are in the unfortunate position of having to organise a funeral at Mortonhall I'd highly recommend the Stable Bar for the wake.

We were a party of 7, booked in for lunch. All seated by 12.30 (our reservation time) but it took about 15 minutes for us to be asked what we wanted to drink and that was only because I caught the waiter’s attention and told him we were ready order. Fast forward to 1pm, the drinks arrived and again I told the waiter we were ready to order our food. The food was tasty but my own order arrived with chips instead of the mashed potatoes I had asked for - not the end of the world. Once we all finished our mains our dishes sat in front of us for quite a long time. They were cleared and we expected to be brought the dessert menus - they didn’t arrive so I asked for them. Service was poor. The lunch menu is much reduced with only 4 main courses on it to choose from (but there are light bites to choose from as well) Don’t know that we will return - at least, not if the same team are serving

Further Update - this is a 'local' for me. Throughout the winter the heating has been inadequate. The log burner has worked (occasionally) and it is common for people to keep their overcoats on when having drinks or dining. This has been raised with the management but they seem to be unable to even buy some logs for the fire. I hope we can soon return to a comfortable bar / restaurant. Update - they have recruited some good staff over the last few weeks and they are trying hard. I've not eaten recently so cannot comment but I would still recommend booking if you want a meal.

Update, new management have changed the day menu and taken all the nice things off. Tiny lunch menu now and mostly sandwiches with chips.. real shame because this was a lunchtime favourite for our family. The manager said a lot of people had complained about the new menu but unfortunately the complaints are being ignored. Way to ruin a business. Yay Lovely old stable, open fire, dogs welcome and a nice seating area outside.. Good pub food at reasonable prices. Been going here for 20+years and it's consistently good value for money and a family atmosphere

A strange welcome, the person seemed nervous to see me. Waited for over 40 minutes on our food, and my roast was cold when it arrived. Meat and veg both cold to the touch. If i wasn't so hungry i would have sent it back. No check ups during the meal, and then when the food was finished, no one asked us how the food was. The moody server plonked the card machine down on the table at the tip page like we were required to do so - they did nothing to deserve a tip, so none was given. Poor customer service, cold food, won't be back in hurry.

Nice little hogmanay lunch on a horrible day weather wise. Going to try Sunday lunch soon. Staff really lovely and nice atmosphere.

Nice place, has some Gluten Free choices for starters and mains plenty for dessert, place was busy when we arrived, service not the quickest but understandable, haggis pot not the hottest, butter milk burger good and the gf choice hunters chicken good as well, pasta was piping hot, no gf sticky toffee pudding as they had sold out, cheesecake was good with ice cream, overall nice we place and will be back

It was the 18 Dec a dull day yet the Christmas tree in the courtyard wasn't lit. There were only 2 tables in so It was not busy, however the wood burner was nearly out, so much so that adding a log did nothing & it had to be restarted with kindling. There was no atmosphere whatsoever. I had recommended this place to my friend as I had always come here up until a few Christmas ago. When there was a reasonable choice of food & plate size. This was no longer the case. I opted for the Scampi it as okay not the best chips I had to use Brown & Red Ketchup, plus tarter sauce to give some flavour to the dish. My friend who is vegetarian thought £15.95 was a bit much for Mac & Cheese so opted for a scone with butter & jam plus a draft diet coke this was £8.95 still pricey, but things really went downhill when the scone arrived it was about an inch in circumference.... Shocking!!! I felt so bad as she doesn't have a lot of money, this sort of spoiled the start to our Christmas day out. After we were brought the bill the server asked how things were with the meal. I made my feeling clear on the size of the scone, he looked sheepish & said they had changed supplier's. So what there should have been at least 2 of the tiny scones on the plate if not 3 to be equivalent to a bog standard scone. There was no apology & we left. We were in & out within 20 mins or so. Absolutely shocking this place has went way down hill.

Bar lunch: soup and sandwich ok. Floor space was two areas. One half had the open fire the other had no heating. We were in the latter and were frozen. Won't go back.

We have been staying in the bungalows, we have had breakfast and lunch there several days, we can say that all the waiters were very pleasant and helpful, the atmosphere and the food were unbeatable, a place to repeat and relax, they make you feel at home. Very good coffee and food. It has been a pleasure.

Honestly some of the best food I've had in years, the steak and ale pie was perfect and the buttermilk chicken burger was one the of the best burgers I've had. Starter, main and dessert were excellent.

Atmosphere was great and food not bad. Had nice time and place is so lovely

Food and service very good. Atmosphere has lost something from years gone by. Lights are too bright and dazzling. (Reflected light is much kinder). Not a fan of the beige decor, suggest repainting far end walls in a dark colour e.g deep rust, burgundy or navy to improve the atmosphere.

The steak pie was very good. The cobbled courtyard may be difficult for anyone with mobility issues. There was a draught everytime the door opened. There were quite a few customers with dogs, so if you are allergic to or dislike dogs then this might put you off.

Anthony and his team were marvellous. I would suggest that they label the vegan/veggie food. The non meat sausage rolls did not go down well with the meat eaters. That meant I took home the proper ones and enjoyed them. Lovely day.

Absolutely outstanding food and service. I had booked a room for a large group after a funeral at Mortonhall, and I don’t think I could have chosen a better venue. The staff were incredibly polite and helpful and everything just went off with ease. I’m genuinely so very grateful to the staff for being so lovely. Really appreciated it.

Place was freezing; coffee was not hot and hot ones had to be requested; scones were tiny and the butter was absolutely frozen solid. Service was poor as were the staff. Won't be rushing back any time soon

Bar is lovely. Service was slow and inattentive. Had to chase to order drinks then these arrived and empty glasses just left. Had to chase to order dessert and chase the bill. Bar could have bade more money Hair found in burger - yuck. Roast nice but recognise it was the end of the timeline but meat overcooked. Rest tasty. Manager excellent and removed the offending burger from the bill. Disappointing as wanted to support local business

Converted stables with indoor & outdoor seating. Food is standard pub fare - fish & chips, steak pie, burgers. A few families, dogs & couples were there when we visited. Friendly service from the bar & waiting staff.

Family visiting for the weekend were keen to revisit as we used to go to The Stables with our parents. Although busy the atmosphere and service were relaxing. The roast dinners were very tasty and my husband enjoyed his vegetarian haggis dish.

Unfortunately the staff were very stoney faced and not that helpful when we asked for a tea spoon for a coffee we were told “they are all in the wash we don’t have any” not ideal is it, the food portions were small for the price and the couple we were sat next to had to send their soup back as it was really cold the staff didn’t seem apologetic about any of that and was another 20 minutes before they got the soup back. Overall not a great experience

Excellent food and a good value. Well worth a visit. Extending the Stables has made it even better and would recommend the Stables even more. Staff are really friendly and helpful 🙂

We were not happy with the girl that greeted us as we entered the restaurant. The issue was resolved quickly and handled very well by another member of staff.

We were staying at the campsite and decided to try the food at the restaurant. It was amazing, good variety of food choices and all dishes were delicious. Service was excellent and restaurant itself was extremely clean and well decorated.

Very beautiful place with irresistible wood fires. I didn't take advantage of the cuisine option, but the variety of drinks is excellent.

Food was great, as usual, but the service was much poorer than expected. We took visitors here for the first time and they weren’t impressed. Staff stood around chatting, forgetting some of our order; bringing incorrect food items, and never cleared any glasses from our table despite there being around 6 or 7 staff available. It was quite cold also and we had to ask a staff member to close the door as she walked back and forth past it after it was left open. Atmosphere isn’t as good as it used to be due to the strange alteration at the back of the room where the carpet has been lifted and there is a large gap in the floor space.

Food and atmosphere of Stable Bar was great as always, cosy place to be as dark nights drawer in. Although we did have a problem in either a drink had been spilt or there was some kind of leak on the seat next to me where I had put my coat/scarf/bag, which were literally soaked when I picked them up. Coat and scarf unwearable as they were so wet and my bag is now not useable since drying out as covered in water marks and all contents have had to be thrown away. Thankfully my phone wasn't in the bag as it would have been completely broken and water logged. Management/bar staff didn't do or offer anything, it was abit of a shrug of the shoulders, which was hugely disappointing

Always good. Staff are lovely and helped us out with our two Jack Russells who tbh are a pain in the butt with other dogs. Food is delicious.

The quality of my beef burger could have been better but the chips were fab. Was a massive portion so make sure you're hungry! My friends liked their steak pie - clean plates all round but wanted some more mash. Staff were nice but could have been paying more attention. Good value for money though. The place looks lots better after the refurbishment, especially the updated bathrooms, but it lacks a cosy feel which is a pity.

When Meadowhead took over this bar several years ago, the service and food went rapidly downhill. Glad to see it has improved, although will never be as good as when it was independently owned. Young staff need a bit of training , it wasn't busy but we were left staring at our empty plates for quite a while before they cleared them away.

Food is always good but this time all of it was excellent. One star off service as one of the dishes was not what was ordered, but this was rectified quickly.

Food on both occasions was very good, however the service was utterly abysmal, a confused couldn’t care attitude along with people simply standing around chatting with no direction. Very long waits for attention meaning staff were called over three times, no knowledge of dishes on the menu and longer waits whilst basic questions about the dishes were clarified.

Booked to go for a Sunday Roast before 5pm. Ordered Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. It came minus the Yorkshire Pudding! No communication that they had run out of them and nobody asked if I still wanted a Sunday Roast. I would have chosen something else. Beef was chewy and all veg was frozen veg. Very disappointing but the most annoying thing was the Waitress who brought it, couldn’t have cared less. I am a local and I just think this could be a whole lot better..food and service. It’s put me off going!

We had a table booked for 7.30 It was later than we wanted. As they were very busy we took it. We went earlier hopefully to get taken. We managed to get a table thanks to the staff. Had a good meal and service was great. Especially when they had staff off sick. We would go back again, good pub grub

The food was really delicious and there were some good options to choose from. The service was also very good and the waiters were friendly and helpful.

The Stables restaurant was lovely, very good service, staff were very attentive and efficient. My only complaint was my wife ordered a King Prawn & Chorizo linguine which we sent back as it had been I er reduced and the cream had split. It wasn't a subjective opinion about taste it just wasn't made properly and we still received it on our bill. I thought to charge us for a meal that wasn't eaten because it wasn't made properly was very poor. Other than that the rest of the food was very good and I know mistakes can happen but the customer should not have to foot the bill for kitchen mistakes.

Kids food terrible and expensive. Overcharged in the bill corrected by waitress at table. There seems to be little control over standard and delivery quality. Monopoly over a very big captive audience.

We had a great meal and were impressed with the staffs service . Also the great night continued with the entertainment that was provided as Ben Darling sang and played a great selection of songs that had everyone joining in. What a great night in a great venue.

Enjoyable meal as always. Haggis neeps and tatties not the biggest portion compared to the other meals ordered (steak pie and scampi). All were very tasty. The haggis appeared to have more sauce than haggis.
