What a lovely restaurant. There was a good selection food and the sticky toffee pudding in particular was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful without being pushy in any way - Would highly recommend

Quirky eating place. Quite dark inside. A few more dimmed lamps might be an idea. The food was just ok, for the prices charged. My husband had beef shin which he enjoyed. I had seafood and chicken gumbo, (recommended by the staff), which was quite bland. (More flavour maybe required?) I ordered a portion of parmesan truffle fries, as when looking at the meal I knew I would be hungry later. £6.50 for a portion. For 2 meals and a bottle of wine £95.45. There are eating places nearby with better food and not just as expensive. If the standard was top notch we would have been happier. The staff are lovely. Nice atmosphere. Great location. Just a bit disappointed with our meal.

Delicious! Go early and take advantage of the 2-course specials. We loved the lamb meatball tangine, mussels and especially the sticky toffee pudding. Portions were very generous and the sauces were complex and well balanced. We’d eat here again! One small issue - our original server said we could have either a starter and main OR a main and dessert as part of the 2-course deal. When the bill arrived, we had the lunch pricing but the main and dessert were charged separately. It was only a few pound’s difference and we did not question it, but be sure you clarify with the server if you want the dessert option.

Having visited Merchants around the corner a couple of nights prior, we were expecting a similar stellar experience. Things started off well and we were seated promptly, despite arriving 30 minutes early. We all liked the quirky decor and new/old feel, and service was great (although potentially a little rushed). My 'Surprise Calamari' was very good (not rubbery, as experienced by another reviewer below), but my American friend was not impressed by the French Onion soup. I felt the Venison Chasseur was not as tender as I'd have liked (and the blackberries were a strange inclusion). At £28.50, the prix fixé menu was reasonable value but I wasn't tempted to prolong our meal with dessert, unusually for me. Coffee was subpar, as well.

I won’t give a one star rating, as the restaurant was open and we were served food. The restaurant has a good reputation according to Tripadvisor, and we were looking forward to spending our last night in Edinburgh here. I had the “Surprise” Calamari for a starter, it was surprisingly awful. I don’t understand how the calamari receives great reviews, is the batter on the calamari supposed to be ‘soggy’ and the squid rubbery? My partner had the mussels, they were nice. The mains….. I had seafood gumbo, it was not good, I can’t describe the texture of the fish (maybe rubber) accompanied by the microwaved blitzed prawns and the one mussel, with no seasoning. My partner had Venison….it was so bad it made her feel ill, I said it can’t possibly be that bad, so I tried a piece. It tasted like an oxo cube followed by a piece of cardboard. At this point we should have complained, however, we’re not complainers and always try to enjoy our meals out, so we opted for the cowards way out and paid the bill and left, leaving behind our £35 bottle of wine. Service was good, although the manager on his laptop in the middle of the restaurant doesn’t give the best of impressions. I can only think this was a ‘bad’ night for the cooks, as we always look on the bright side when it comes to restaurant food, and generally give good/excellent reviews, and reading other reviews it must surely have been a one off (hopefully).

Quel comble pour des français de manger dans un restaurant français à Édimbourg. Malgré tout, ce fut un réel plaisir de passer la première soirée de nos vacances en Écosse dans ce restaurant : service de qualité, staff attentif, carte élaborée, plats succulents, etc.

Really disappointing. Starter of french onion soup was watery and bland, oeufs cocottes had uncooked egg white and bland creamy sauce, main course fish didn't have crispy skin and chicken leg was tiny and sinewy. Real shame as I remember it being good but won't be back.

With a 25% off food we could not resist another visit to one of our favourite French restaurants in the heart of Edinburgh. It has a homely, quirky atmosphere. We chose the two course menu. Starters were delicious. I had the aubergine tower and hubby had the oof cocotte - leek fondue. For main I had Tagine of lamb boulettes and hubby had steak. I don’t often eat meat but these meatballs in a lightly spiced bean sauce was amazing. Definitely recommend. In fact hubby wishes he had chosen that instead of steak! Service was excellent. Anna was brilliant. Knew when to chat and when to leave us. She’s multi lingual and can speak Spanish fluently with some German. All in all a very nice afternoon leaving us with nice memories

Thin soup, small mussels in an unpleasant tomato broth failed to brighten a gloomy Edinburgh Winter day. Toilets at the top of rickety stairs might have presented urban charm, but realistically capped at a poor experience. Even the Bright waitress didn’t manage to lift the location.

A lovely little place with great food and the best staff. A great choice of good wines that complemented the food. Service was quick and the food quality amazing.

I had a very disappointing experience for valentine's day. The starter for my date was good (scallops) but my calamari was soggy, sad and at best, a 6/10. The worst bit was we had to wait 2 hours from entering the restaurant to get our main... almost 1.5hrs after getting our starter. At that point one would eat anything... The staff did not check on us and blamed it on "an absent chef", when everybody else had their food. I would have preferred honesty that they forgot. When the main came, they were small and not very good. The beef was bland and the curry was unimpressive. After a nearly 2 hour wait, being served this quality of food ruined the occasion. The wait staff stopped asking how we found the food because they already knew the answer and generally did not provide much service. The dessert was pretty good (sticky toffee pudding), but having a decent starter and good dessert does not make up for it. You would not say a burger is good if only the buns were tasty. I would not bring anybody here for a big occasion, unless you wish to be left disappointed.

Two friends, long overdue catch up. Beautiful and well priced set menu for lunch. The rabbit dish was particularly lovely. Wine by the glass was perfect. We loved it and I’ve since recommended it to others.

A lovely cosy restaurant with a quirky edge that we liked. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a few things that meant the food wasn't quite elevated to a higher rating for this review. The squid surprise was by far the nicest starter. Main courses were okay but nothing particularly special. The staff were all really welcoming and friendly, but on balance the restaurant was not for us.

A great little spot if you want a sophisticated atmosphere and delicious food. The food we had was delicious and very filling. The serving staff were very lovely but were clearly busy so it took a while to track one down and get the bill! The Baileys Crème Brûlée was probably the best crème brûlée that I have ever had. The venison and gumbo were delicious also. Oh and you must try the haggis balls! We had a lovely and memorable evening.

Sono stata in questo ristorante per la cena della vigilia di Natale con la mia famiglia. Location veramente bella, addobbata super bene. Avevamo il tavolo dalle 18.00 - 20.30, la cameriera, Fern, è arrivata per prendere le ordinazioni, fin da subito ho avvisato di essere celiaca ed incinta, dicendo che devo mangiare tutto ben cotto. Dopo quasi un'ora è arrivato il mio piatto con delle verdure crude, l'ho fatto presente a Fern e lei ha detto, senza lasciarci parlare con un'arroganza indisponente che lei ha amiche che in gravidanza mangiano verdura cruda. Nessuno mi ha cambiato il piatto. Mio padre e mio cognato avrebbero voluto ordinare del vino, ma Fern, la cameriera al piano non si è mai degnata di venire da noi, nonostante la stessimo chiamando. Ha lasciato sul tavolo due birre alla spina mai ordinate. A fine serata, prima di uscire mia sorella è andata da Fern a farle un'osservazione positiva da ex cameriera, ma lei con la solita saccenza, non ha voluto ascoltarla, al che le abbiamo consigliato di cambiare lavoro.

Friendly staff and good food. A bit pricey.

Possibly the most delicious 3 course dinner I’ve ever had as part of a large group. 30 of us were eating from the Christmas dinner menu and everyone’s meals were served beautifully hot (even the three that had to be held on to due to a plane delay!). We must have ordered every dish on the menu between us, and everyone raved about how delicious theirs was. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back again and only wish it was nearer. Thank you Maison Bleue.

We happened upon Maison Bleue today quite by chance and wow what a find!? The food was absolutely incredible and the service was superb. We both chose haggis to start, rabbit for main and shared a cheese selection for dessert. All accompanied by a lovely...

Such a wonderful, cozy restaurant to pop into on a cold rainy day. So many veg options too! Got the sweet potato cinnamon soup and the mac & cheese and got the perfect food coma after. Did an americano after to fix that. The holiday/Christmas decorations were absolutely stunning the commute to the bathroom (a couple floors up) and in general I was pleasantly surprised at how much seating was available! We were able to come in and be seated quite quickly on a Sunday afternoon without a reservation. Great place to come while you’re popping in and out of shops in Victoria street Will absolutely return during my next visit to Edinburgh!

I went today at a no rush hour and saw plenty of free tables, but I was turned down because "there was no table for 1". I want to believe the tables were booked, but regadless it felt rather bad to be told that... it takes courage to go eating alone, I dont want to be told thats the reason why I cant be seated...

Beautiful looking place in a fabulous part of Edinburgh. A very cosy bistro feel. Looked especially lovely lit up with Xmas lights. We chose the Xmas menu at £35 a head. The food was delicious and well cooked but portions were very small, I left feeling hungry. Even some veg with the main course would have helped. It all seemed a bit disorganised. However, it was busy.

Quaint little restaurant with lot’s of charm in ‘diagon Alley’ (aka Victoria St) food has lots of influence from French, Scottish, Vietnamese and North African, emphasis being on French. Quality and execution just manages to get there with great calamari dish, haggis balls and a very tasty bouillabaisse- fish of the day accompaniments was below par. Service was fast and cheerful. An above the average quality for a picpoul and other tempting wine offerings. Recommended

Liked the place but the food wasn't up to a 5* standard. That might be because they were also handling a large party, but there it is. One of the mains arrived barely luke-warm. Mine arrived hot, but it was not as good as I had expected it to be. "Your mileage may vary! "

Very cold approach from the beginning, I ve order a Old Fashion with laphroig, I didn t like it and I ve asked politely if I can change it with an other drink, the answer was no because was so expensive he said (11£) ... the place was lovely but the service unfortunately was not the same ... maybe my expectations was high..

The food was good, but terrible service. Seemed like the waitress was preoccupied with some personal/workplace issues. Though we agreed to dine in the waiting area, she didn't take us to the regular dining area even when the tables became available, and instead gave it to people who came in after us. Many of the items on the menu were not available.

This could have been a good experience. Good location, nice decor, food was good. Service was dreadful. A £45 of Chablis came barely chilled. The wait for drinks and water was very long, they were not organised on glasses, ice nor drinks stocked in the fridge for service. I suspect they survive on tourists coming once and never again. Really disappointing experience

The food is absolutely fabulous. Each dish was better than the last! We went early and were able to get a seat before 6pm. The staff was attentive and pleasant.

This is one of the worst meals I've ever had in my life. I got food poisoning from the French onion soup. Decor very pretentious and cringey and staff seemed confused. No cocktail glasses. Waited 40 mins for the wine. Chips are oven chips and came with package cheese. All my friends hated it. Absolutely always tip but honestly couldn't bring myself to do it. I don't even know how one messes up soup and chips that badly and it was so overpriced. Normal pub food is better than this place. Literally a tourist trap. Don't go here !!!!

We Had the most amazing birthday lunch at this restaurant! The building is fabulous and very chic thorough out. Staff were very attentive and informative about the menu. We had the haggis balls,Saigon beef,prawns and surprise calamari which were all delicious! I’d Definitely recommend this...

Three of us went for dinner last night before the tattoo.. My two friends are ill today , both had the mussels to start. The food was awful, we ordered mussels and bruschetta to start then 2 chicken curries and a veggie one. The curry was more like soup and I had to use a spoon to eat it. The veggie one had hardly any vegetables, when I asked the waitress where the veggies were she said there was onions and peppers. I counted 3 bits of yellow pepper ! The bruschetta was soggy too. Think other people were complaining too, never again.

Firstly, we are not review people. especially not in our own city in a restaurant we have eaten in many times but our experience was noteworthy! The food was great, portion sizes were a bit variable and not sure of the theme of the presentation/menu...

If you know you've been given a "bad batch" of draught beer from your supplier - DON'T SERVE IT. First, was served a gross tasting, flat beer. I was given another, gassed up one and drank a little of the new beer and it was even worse. My stomach started to hurt halfway through the meal. Got about four blocks away after eating here - and not even half pint of their sour, still flat beer that tasted like the tap lines needed to be cleaned, badly - and had to THROW UP in an alley because the sour beer upset my stomach so badly. Nice ambience and the salads were ok. However, the fried haggis balls were cold as ice in the middle - had to wait for them to come to room temp before eating, then they were just barely ok. And I like haggis. Not recommended, although I don't blame the staff as they were nice, rather the quality control is very lacking. I wouldn't have commented had it not been for the beer making me sick. Terrible stuff.

Me and my friends decided to go for some food in town and seen this place so we went inside to be sadly dissatisfied and disappointed with the food quality was mediocre at best and for the price we payed you could go to Undine just next door or any other restaurant around who offer much better dishes for similar price and the reason for 1 star is not because of food probably would have left 3 stars but seen one of the managers or owner(because he wasn't doing anything too help with service) he started screaming at one of the waiters and being incredibly rude and one of the girls he shouted at left soon after looking visibly upset it is unacceptable in my opinion to treat your staff like this in front of your customers or ever to be honest.... would definitely NOT recommend this place, skip it and go somewhere else you will be better off.

We booked a table pre a concert at the castle. From the minute we walked in the service and welcome was second to none. The staff were lovely and accommodating. Jess in particular was super. All our food and wine was great, could not fault....
