Had a fantastic lunch at Chez Jules! I went for the steak and French onion soup from their lunch menu, and both were absolutely delicious – full of flavour and beautifully prepared. I was also pleasantly surprised with a wee snack on the house before my meal arrived, which was such a lovely touch. The staff were warm, friendly, and welcoming throughout. A wonderful experience all around – I’ll definitely be back!

Food is fine, however, service, space and the lack of attention from staff was disappointing. Our group size was large which they were not catered to deal with so would recommend going with a group of maximum up to 4 people. Pre booked for 12:00 and sat down promptly, however, our order wasn't taken till after 30 mins of waiting, followed by another 45 mins till any starters arrived. After another 45 mins of waiting the mains arrived. Prices and food are ok at best, hopefully your visit will be better.

Came in on a Wednesday still busy but managed to get a table via walk in at 3pm (Would advice to book as it gets packed quite quickly) Its quite a small place but cosy interior. service was quick even during the busy periods however don’t expect too much of a server to customer engagement. As we were placed right beside the service window we saw a lot of chatting and also a lack of hand washing from staff (we believed the managers were good at this but some servers on the other hand) which put me off however we came for the food… Decided to try the lunch menu - onion soup was 3/5 as it was quite watery and didn’t get the oniony flavour you would expect from a french onion soup. Steak en frites on the other hand 4.5/5 would highly recommend!! Only reason i didn’t give it a 5 is because of consistency. My partner got a nicely med/rare with just the right amount of charring whilst mines was too charred nonetheless still a good steak and would happily order again as the peppercorn sauce just hits the right spot. The pricing of it too with it being in Edinburgh is pretty decent. Under £13 for two course is a steal. I’ve highly recommend this restaurant since coming and would happily order again to try the mussels as i heard great things about it.

The food was amazing and so fairly priced, house wines were also really good! Love the added bonus of a free starter. Unfortunately seems a bit understaffed, we waited at least 45 minutes before we could get the waiters attention and order our final course. They were really busy but was definitely a bit too long to wait. Ended up having to go up the counter and ask for service.

RACIST SERVICE I celebrated my birthday at Chez Jules, and it was an absolutely HORRIBLE experience. The service was incredibly rude and blatantly discriminatory. The staff treated our table unfairly compared to others, and it was painfully obvious they were treating us differently based on our skin color. It’s shocking to experience such racism in 2025. I’ve never been so disrespected at a restaurant before, especially on my birthday. If you’re looking for a restaurant that judges you based on the color of your skin, then Chez Jules is unfortunately the place to go. But if you want to be treated with dignity and respect, I would recommend looking elsewhere. VERY DISAPPOINTED

The food was okay-ish. The real kicker was the service. The staff were too busy chatting to each other half the time to serve us, and the pacing of food service was awful. They bought one dish out after the next without any time I between. It felt like we were being hurried up so that they could give the table to someone else. I'd recommend napoleon up the street instead, cheaper/better food, and nicer staff.

I don't like saying it but a bit of a mixed bag. Went for a birthday meal & the first impression wasn't great as the lass at the entrance seemed off and rude to my partner. We were then sat at a table that was way too small for the 8 people we had and then unfortunately I had a 'authentic stereotypical French experience' with a raging d-bag of a server who was straight up rude. Luckily the guy in charge of service kinda saved the night not only spotted that the table wasn't up to duties but that also the server was being an absolute nightmare. To end on a positive the food was pretty great, best steak tartare I've had in years and everyone enjoyed their meals but who needs the nonsense drama.

I had an extremely unpleasant and humiliating experience at Chez Jules in Edinburgh. The owner herself treated my family and me with unbelievable rudeness and disrespect. She was openly discriminatory, making us feel unwelcome simply because of who we are. Her behavior was not only unprofessional but also deeply offensive, especially in front of my family. I want to warn all Arab and Muslim visitors: this restaurant is NOT welcoming to everyone. I strongly advise against visiting Chez Jules if you value respect and dignity. We loved our first visit last year, food was great and the staff accommodated us even if we didn’t have a booking. However, this year’s experience was different. I ordered the same food I had last year, my husband loved it too but it just tastes different this time. Soup was salty and watery. And the treatment we experienced from one of the staff was horrible. We asked one of their staff if we could move to a different table as I was feeling nauseous and wanted to be seated by the corner, staff told us we could after the table is cleaned. Shortly after that, another staff accused us in front of other customers that we’ve moved seats without telling them, it was embarrassing. I just lost my appetite after that.

I really enjoyed eating at Chez Jules. It's like a fast service, French restaurant. Finely tuned to be in and out during the day. You can't stay long as it's bijou, loud as cramned, limited space, and basic wooden table and chairs that don't provide great comfort. Food is fantastic and quickly served. Close enough to the centre of Edinburgh as a quick detour off the busy shopping streets will have you there in 7 minutes. Try it, lunch menu is do cheap and you'll have a great time and lovely food.

The place has a nice vibe and it seems pretty popular given the queue. However, the waiter was a bit rude by telling me we don’t have spaces without even giving a specific time to when we can come back (unlike what he told others waiting). And when I asked him when can we get a seat, and he said you can come back after more than an hour! And he literally gave the couple behind us a seat immediately. This was probably the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to. I had booked a table a week in advance to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and everything was ruined. The table was dirty, it was freezing cold inside, and I had to sit in my coat the whole time. We waited 45 minutes for our food, and when it finally arrived, it was absolutely awful. All I wanted was to leave and forget this place ever existed. To make things worse, our table was right next to the bar, and the staff kept banging glasses and throwing cutlery around — we could barely hear each other speak. We booked a table for lunch on 24 February 2025 for our wedding breakfast. We were seated in the corner behind a pillar, presumably for privacy. However, this corner was very cold dispite the aircon blowing hot air. Not helped by the fact that we were near the front door which would be left wide open by people waiting to be seated, hence the low score. The service was very slow but the food was good when it did arrive. This is a very popular restaurant and we hope to return for our first anniversary, requesting to be seated further in the room. We look forward to giving a better review on our return.

The stand out, endorphin releasing, Apple wallet sigh of relief-ing, aspect of this restaurant is the amazing lunch 3 course deal they have. With plenty of food being served, consumed with a bottle of red, the evening couldn’t go wrong. Jolly and scrumptious. Alas, If you look closely and cajole your tastebuds into Michelin mode, the greasy French onion soup, non-chocolately chocolate mousse, and stale bread can be a bit of a let down. Nevertheless, the service was good and the atmosphere gives the right impression of a classic French style restaurant that starts with ‘chez’. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by an unbearably cramped environment, with tables so wobbly they could barely support a glass of water, let alone a meal. The staff? Completely uninterested, and service was so slow it felt like they were deliberately trying to ruin the evening. Now, the food - thought it would be the saving grace but was sorely mistaken… My chicken was so overcooked it was practically inedible, dry and tasteless, and drowned in an obscene mess of salt and rosemary, as if someone thought that seasoning could make up for the complete lack of skill in the kitchen. It was a disgrace to French cuisine. Every single aspect of Chez Jules screamed incompetence and indifference. I wouldn’t return if you paid me. Chez Jules? More like Chez Jizz. Booked a table a month prior for Valentine’s Day via email and when we showed up were barely greeted by a manager with a clear attitude problem. No hi, No Bonjour not even a welcome smile, just “How did you book.” Then she sat us right by the pass which was noisy and we could see the chefs taking the bins out through where everyone was dining. We also noticed that this manager treated other customers the same and gave death stares to the other poor waitresses running around like chickens. Her professionality was shocking. Took 20mins to get served and I’m certain they forgot because they took everyone else’s orders who came after us. My partner had to ask one of the other waitresses who said she would find our waitress. We could finally order drinks which took 20 minutes. When we finally did order the chips were cold (from frozen im certain) and steak medium rare but parts were literally raw. Cheap steak, cheap chips. We were ready to be done and asked for the bill to which a waitress was shocked that we did not want to order dessert and said whilst she printed our receipt that she was disappointed we didn’t order dessert. Well we were disappointed at the service and poor quality, who in their right mind would want to stay longer and order a dessert? We chose to dine here as it reminded us of our time in France, what déception.

Very nice French restaurant Only downside, too bad they are frozen fries... For a French restaurant, I expected to eat good homemade fries like they do so well in France

Our waiter was great, helped us pick a great wine to compliment our meal. The additional sides which accompany the main meal are a lovely touch. I had the macaroni as a main- it was the best macaroni I’ve ever had. The lighting is also very aesthetically pleasing if that’s your thing!

Chez Jules has an amazing atmosphere – it's the kind of place where you can just relax and have a good time. The food's great too, especially the seafood and steak. They have a good wine selection for a really reasonable price. The only downside is that it's nearly impossible to get a table without a reservation.

Booked over a week in advance and arrived to find it was closed. No attempt at contacting me in advance.

Incredible French restaurant! We went for the lunch 3 course menu which was £13 for 3 courses! The vibes are very homey here and the food is delicious, especially the steak. It’s always packed here, so I recommend you book in advance !

Gem for lunch. On crazy busy Victoria st there is a good quality French bistro with good service hidden behind a blue exterior. Had a great lunch with gluten-free options. Wish we could have been back for dinner. Beautiful presentation and inventive menu in quaint old building. Stairs to washroom might be challenge for some...check with staff if alternative w

ORDER THE SCALLOPS. Our servers were amazing and the food was top notch - my friend was insisting we try this "elevated Scottish food" and I was feeling more like getting pub food, but I'm really glad we went here. I also had the haggis-stuffed chicken and a sticky toffee pudding, and thoroughly enjoyed every single bite of the experience.

Was very underwhelmed by the food, especially considering the price. Service felt rather cold too.
