Very poor service. First, when I asked for the menu, the waiter refused to give one to me and told me to just turn my back and read from the wall which was very unclear. Next, halfway through my meal it began to rain and the waiters only offered an umbrella to the other table. Therefore, without providing me an alternative seat or protection from the rain, my food ended up getting wet.

Picked this place at short notice for meeting old friends as our normal venue was closed. Welcome to our new normal. I had to call for reservations during lunch hours, which I hate to do, but my call was handled with professional calm, even though I could hear how busy they were. The food is good, and the service was beyond what I would expect for how busy they got. On the busyness of the place I can say this. Yes, it got a bit noisy, but it was not an unpleasant noise, it was the noise of people enjoying their food and company. The food came out well prepared and hot, and as ordered, with nothing to complain about. The menu had something for everyone and the wine list had good wines at good prices. On a busy evening, having been told we had to vacate the table by a certain time, we never felt any pressure to hurry. I would recommend booking on advance as the restaurant filled up quickly, even on a midweek evening. We came, we ate, we will return.

I can only review the dinner menu and that is spectacularly tasty! (rabbit, steak, potatoes dauphinoise, caramelised carrots, onion soup) Everything was amazing apart from salad (not enough dressing) and baguette (too dry) so I don't recommend those as starters/side dishes. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Service was helpful and responsive, however they take away things from you too quickly from tables what might be dictated by scarcity of space. Hence my one less star - the interior had seen better days, all furniture is well worn and packed to the brim. It also has a feeling of being dirty.

I was visiting Edinburgh and was really excited to try Chez jules as the reviews are skyrocket high, we had no reservations so we put our names and waited for 1 hour and a half and when we finally had our seatings and our meal finally arrived, we ordered the sautéed prawns, french onion soup, and the bolognese pasta, the food was simply inedible the shrimps still had the shit sack in them and tasted very old, the pasta tasted like it was cooked yesterday and was very cold, the soup was cold, had no cheese and we can only taste the metallic taste of the spoon! The food literally made me sick and I had to run to the restroom to puke and on top of that we had to pay for the wine which we didn’t consume at all! The worst experience ever!

Very nice place to go for lunch or evening meal, we did plan on eating from the set menu but after looking at the main menu decided to go for that, I had the Surf and turf, I had to send the steak back due to it being over cooked, I asked for medium rare but it came out well done, this was rectified very quickly which is good, my wife had the lamb shank which could not be faulted, the free bread and oil before our mains was a nice touch aswell, overall I would highly recommend this restaurant if you in the area and looking for a traditional french experience ⭐⭐⭐

Very slow service, 35min to get just the starters, onion soup was served with fresh bread and not croutons. We had a chance to see the lunch menu after we placed a la carte order... Not got a chance to ask for a straw to drink my coke as the waiter drop the drink quickly and left directly. Our main, 6oz steak roquefort sauce, was undercooked and the sauce was salty as hell and running like water. What was our surprise when plates came with just a steak inside and when we asked the waitress if their was any side with it we been told "I only have two hands". Presentation on plates need to be assessed and employees attitude with customers too. We ll come back? Certainly not.

This place is like a carbon copy - in the best possible sense - of the Bouillon Pigalle popular restaurant in Paris. Always packed with customers, a kitchen producing classic dishes and service staff who do so well to cope with the insane demand. The 3 course lunch is probably the best value restaurant meal in Scotland, never mind the middle of Edinburgh's New Town. Get the panna cotta dessert and also treat yourself to a carafe of wine (a wide range of options) too - this restaurant really deserves your custom.

We were a party of 5 who waited 2 hours for our food, which was well below par when it eventually arrived. No one apologised for the slow service yet were keen to see if we needed more alcohol. The cassoulet, barely warm, bore no resemblance to that which I have eaten in France and the rabbit was dried up. Extremely disappointed as I had been once before and had a lovely experience with good food.

Had an nice lunch here. Our booking hadn't been taken properly but they managed to find us a table when we showed the confirmation. Food excellent as always. Service not the friendliest. Visited again on 28/09/24. Again there was a problem with the booking - this is a recurring issue with this place. I phoned for a table 6 weeks in advance and my reservation wasn't taken properly. This time the food wasn't so good. The lobster was mushy which likely meant it wasn't as fresh as it could be. It's put me off returning. Atmosphere on a Saturday night too loud. We couldn't hear each other and everyone just seemed to be getting louder and louder.

I really appreciated that the girl allowed us to sit even though we hadn't booked. It was Sat afternoon and packed. Service was fast but lacked depth as they were just so busy! It really felt like your in and out quick. We had the set lunch deal. Soup was nice, steak ordered was well done but came out bloody. I had to exchange. When it came again it was small pieces of burnt meat cut into small chunks. It didn't look good at all. Panacotta was nice. Though the lunch deal is very reasonable, the quality of food was not great. Nice atmosphere but noisy when full and couldn't hear the music. Lady at till who I suspect was a manager was complaining and seemed frustrated about staff. I didn't need to hear that. Might try again but choose some other dishes.

Absolutely packed at 7.00pm on a Wednesday, very loud and at times hard to hear staff and table mates. House wine is reasonably priced and fine. Food is inexpensive but the price reflects the quality. We had coq au vin, had it many times before in France and elsewhere but not like here, few or no little onions, vague taste of red wine, sauce too thick and chicken not plentiful. Sweets were disappointing too. I guess the very cheap lunchtime menu is okay but I'm sure few discerning diners will return. It's an institution but....

I've heard great things about Chez Jules for a long time but I hadn't got round to trying out their famous award winning lunch menu...until today & boy did Chez Jules not disappoint, I now know why there's always a queue outside waiting for the doors to open at 12 mid-day! Booked my table a few days ahead & I'm glad I did as at 12.30pm the restaurant was very busy & the atmosphere was buzzing. The restaurant had a real authentic feel & reminded me of small restaurants I have visited in France. All the staff we came in contact with were helpful & very welcoming. Our server took our order & within minutes we were served a dressed salad, olives, bread & butter and salami to enjoy whilst we waited for our Steak & Frites with pepper sauce. The Steak & Frites lived up to the rumours I had heard, it was absolutely delicious. The Steak was cooked to perfection; medium rare & was complimented perfectly by the pepper sauce. The Frites were freshly cooked & crispy. My dessert Vanilla Panacotta with raspberry coulis was equally as delicious, a great end to probably the best lunch I have had in central Edinburgh in a very long time. Two courses came to £10.90 and that makes Chez Jules, in my opinion, the best value 5 star lunch in Edinburgh. I'm planning my next visit already & will treat myself to 3 courses for the incredible price £12.90. If you have not had the pleasure of dining at Chez Jules then I would highly recommend you give them a visit as I guarantee it won't be your last. Bon Appetit.

You won't find anywhere in Edinburgh with food as good as you get at Chez Jules and at amazing prices! The set menu lunch is £12.95 with around 3 choices for each course. Have to book as it's mobbed all day so little chance of just turning up and getting a table. Upon being seated, we were provided with a lovely lettuce bowl with a beautiful dressing, some salami and a nice portion of olives. A large bowl of bread is also provided and this is all free of charge and which again is amazing value. We had the french onion soup and pate to start and both were very tasty. We all had the steak frites and it was delicious. You can request the sauce on the side as this was no problem for my brother who requested this. 2 x 2 course meal, 2 x 3 course meal, beers and a bottle of wine all for just over £80 which is honestly the best value around and especially in somewhere as busy as Edinburgh and in the current financial climate where everything is so expensive. Can't wait to go back through and will defo be booking Chez Jules for lunch or dinner or possible both!

Unlocked new favourite spot in Edinburgh, with 3 courses lunch for £12.90 the value is unbeatable 😍 The taste was exactly like in Parisian bouillons. I travel to France pretty often and feel confident to compare. The staff was lovely and they did they best. One thing I want to raise - I witnessed how one female member of the staff (maybe a manager? a blonde Polish woman, who was at the front table) bullied other staff. I was shocked to hear the manner she appreached waitresses, it was really rude and I personally felt bad for girls. I hope this is not a treatment Chez Jules staff receives daily as they have a really hard work and they definitely do their best.

Cheaper than some places, but the cost is for poor quality trash food. We had the lunch set deals, and all meals were of low quality, not fresh ingredients at all, and cooked so mediocre that I cannot recommend eating here. Avoid the oysters too. Just horrid. I've eaten at many french restaurants around the world, and this takes the prize as the worst I've tried. The table was wobbling uncontrollably through our meal, held up by a chunk of cardboard, the place is filthy and cluttered so there is no room to move, eat or breathe. The thing I hated most, was the fact they shamefully served me a room temperature warm beer. Just awful. I don't understand why this place is so busy....maybe people are just so desperate for a "cheap" meal that they don't care about how bad the food or experience is. Abysmal place. I'd never return, and regret wasting money and time in this place.

We really enjoyed ourselves here. It was very busy and noisy, for sure, but I have to say that we had a good time and generally enjoyed our food. My biggest criticism is that the sausage and pork in the duck casserole was quite overcooked and tough - whereas the duck and the rest of the casserole was really good. So I would suggest scrapping the pork and sausage and upping the duck content to compensate.

From the extremely friendly and efficient staff to the delicious quality food, this restaurant is an all round perfect restaurant. The atmosphere, the vibe and buzz of the restaurant makes for an perfect dining experience. Wether it’s an intimate first date for two or a group gathering Chez Jules is the place to go! I had booked a table for 15 people which they were kindly able to accommodate and when I realised that there were more people attending than expected, I rang them back up asking to add on an extra 5 which they were happy to accommodate. This was for my 25th birthday and it defiantly was a memorable one celebrated in the best place. A massive thank you to all the staff that catered to our very boisterous table and who were so accommodating and patient with us. A special thank you to Iona, Kasia, Hannah and Marta who worked to make the evening extra special. Lastly, the food. Huge thank you to the kitchen, even though it wasn’t seen I understand the pressure that such a large booking can put on the kitchen but the food was extraordinary. This place lives up to its hype of affordable good French food. Very few places like this remain and we really enjoyed every bite. They start you off with some bread, French salad, and rosette saucisson. Great house wines and a menu bound to please everyone. Steaks were cooked perfectly - which is crazy to think considering how many they need to churn out. Only thing to note is it’s a VERY loud venue as it’s quite intimate so if you have any sensory issues this place might not be the one - especially if there’s live accordion going on a Thursday. Booking is pretty much mandatory and your best bet is to email them.

The service was really annoying and the waitresses were arragont and unpolite. It was a really bad experience for us.

One of our favourites in town! Food is lovely and their weekday lunch menu is a bargain. Staff are always friendly and even if it’s busy, they endeavour to get you a table. I personally feel the setting is sometimes a bit claustrophobic however my partner disagrees and is clearly a matter of personal preference. If you can overlook this, I’d highly reccomend Chez Jules!

I had a disappointing experience at Chez Jules in Edinburgh. We walked in and were told there was a 3 hour wait. Additionally, she mentioned the outdoor seating was first come first serve to the man in front of us. When we walked outside, the outdoor seating was available. Shortly after, a staff member came outside and, instead of welcoming us, she began yelling, claiming she had never seen us before. This was incredibly embarrassing and confusing as there were no other guests at the time, and we were seated at an empty table. She then said we had a reservation for another day after claiming to have never seen us before. Despite explaining our situation, she refused to let us stay seated outside and rudely dismissed us. What made the situation even worse was that she seated another group that had just arrived, at the very spot we were asked to vacate. This kind of treatment felt disrespectful and unprofessional. Overall, our experience at Chez Jules was quite unpleasant. The lack of clear communication and the hostile behavior of the staff left a bad impression, and we won't be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants in Edinburgh that value their customers and treat them with respect. I'd recommend choosing one of those instead.

Starter and main were good but the salad looked a bit off so I didn't touch it. Main problem was the service – it was hideously slow. A lunch menu should be turned around rather quickly but spending well over 90 minutes in the restaurant is not ideal. The staff don't seem to like it when you chase up your main course. It is good value for money, especially if you like steak frites. They seem to prioritise turning over tables than actually serving food.

Walked in at dinner time and was surprised to get a seat for 3 people. The place was buzzing for a Monday. Dope spot, excellent food and vibes. L'endroit est authentique!

Chez jules is hands down the best value in Edinburgh and I’ve been bringing friends and family here for years. Fantastic food! I will say the qualify of the service can differ depending on the night, but you soon forget about that when your steak frites comes out.

The bread and olives at the start were the best part in all honesty the meat wasn’t seasoned or cooked right and the egg was so raw! Very disappointing for an anniversary dinner.

Will never recommend this place the lady at the reception is bitterly rude and she’s in the wrong place where the city is filled with such lovely and welcoming people around! Don’t stop by to waste any second of your time here.. there were people leaving the place complaining about bad service and below standard food

Service was impeccable after sitting in, but not so great when I was trying to get someone to show me where to wait for a table as the demarcation of the bar and the restaurant was a bit confusing for first-time customers I suppose; something they may be interested to improve considering it is a hotel establishment in general. Food was good and the menu had a very good variety for causal French dinning options.

Arrived and pleasantly greeted, wishing my Mother a Happy Birthday. The menu is incredible with such variety. The food itself was outstanding and the service matched, being very attentive and friendly, with a few extra touches to make it memorable. The team also provided us with recommendations for breakfast the next day which was also a hit!

Lovely little place, we felt comfortable walking in for something small without having to commit to a meal. The staff were kind and talked us through the menu too. We only had an onion soup but unfortunately it really wasn't to my taste. Perhaps I'm unsure on how it's "supposed" to taste, but the onions weren't caramelised, and tasted more like boiled onions still in the water.

Good lunch in a classy restaurant but with decent prices. Much was reserved, but the friendly staff quickly arranged a free table for us.
