We had an early family Xmas bash, 16 adults of which the majority are vegetarians or vegans. The food served up was absolutely first class- there was not one complaint. Everything was just excellent. The service was fast and attentive- just couldn’t be faulted in anyway. On top of that there was a great selection of beers and quite a few 0.0 options for those driving. Thank you to all the staff at the Stanhope.

Lovely coffee, people and atmosphere. A really nice find and will certainly be returning when next visiting the garden centre

We stopped here for a Devonshire Cream Tea this afternoon, having travelled from Norfolk for a few days in the area, and were met by two absolutely wonderful ladies who made us welcome from the moment we stepped inside. Very polite and engaging people who served us the most delightful afternoon tea we have ever enjoyed. Service was impeccable, as were the scones/teas. A real delight to visit and we look forward to the next visit. Thank you for helping to make our afternoon such an enjoyable one.

I went in on a Monday lunch time mid-way through a hike. I was the only customer which gave me a great opportunity to chat to the bar man about the pub. The atmosphere was lovely with a large open fire and old wooden floors (which need to be protected from muddy boots). I was kindly given bootcovers to help protect the floors from mud by the landlady. This pub has a lovely cozy feel, local beers and a classic pub menu. I will definitely be back when walking in the area.

Excellent Sunday Lunch. Visited with my wife’s 91 year old mother to celebrate her birthday. Service was great. My roast beef lunch was excellent and beautifully presented. A shame that the look of the WW2 pub, frequented by Biggin Hill fighter pilots, has been mostly lost though.

We really liked it, the service was spot on and the food was great. The only complaint was the volume of the TV. Perhaps we are just getting old! The menu was quite small, but they also had two specials on offer on top of the standard menu. All food, I believe, is home cooked, so the smaller menu is completely forgiven on that score. One of us had the burger and the other the chilli. Both meals were excellent and really nicely presented. We also shared a starter, which was equally as good as the mains. All the staff were really good and the pub had a lovely atmosphere, really traditional which we love. The rugby was on the television in the area where we were seated, and there was just one person watching it. On full blast, it was difficult to have a conversation at all, which did slightly spoil the occasion, we did mention it to the man as he had the remote, but he was obviously a rugby fan, having said that we did enjoy it and would like to return. Thank you.

This cafe use to be fab. We had a bad experience, wrote an email voicing our concerns but no reply! We thought we’d give it another chance but sadly it has not improved. Firstly there was friction between the staff which didn’t create a great atmosphere. The chairs are mostly worn and need replacing, the middle has gone on the majority and you sink down as there is no seat support so that wasn’t great. The tables were grim, sticky with some type of residue - we used our own hand sanitiser to clean them. The food - we ordered two ham sandwiches which we had to wait ages for, it wasn’t busy. The bread was bordering on stale. There was one slice of wafer thin ham, nothing like it use to be. For this we paid £7.25, so together with two pots of tea at £3.00 each our total bill was £20.50. I don’t have an issue paying when the food & service is good but this really wasn’t. The prices have crept up but the standards & service have dropped.
