The Tudor Pass is a small restaurant in Great Fosters, the Tudor hunting lodge hotel near Virginia Water. Given the small numbers of covers it has for a sitting it is well worth booking in advance. We went for lunch where there is a fixed menu. One unusual feature is that they don't give you the menu until you have finished the meal, which can inhibit your choice of wine ot other drink. The cost of the fixed price lunch was £90. The dining room is small (around 16-20 covers) and tastefully decorated and certainly the ceiling reminds you of the antiquity of the room. We arrived early so we had a glass of champagne outside on the bar terrace overlooking the bridge and pond. I would certainly recommend the Balfour English Sparkling wine over the house champagne. They were both priced the same, but the Balfour had a much better flavour and amount of bubbles. When we were shown to our table, I was surprised to see that our napkins were not only not ironed, but were positively wrinkled, not exactly what you expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. However that was absolutely the only thing to criticise. The meal started with four seperate amuse bouches. Each was brought out by the chefs who had cooked them. Each of them were really tasty, highly imaginative and brilliantly presented. Likewise each of the courses were presented by the chefs who had cooked them. To say the first course was English Heritage beetroot with dill and horseradish doesn't do the course justice. The flavours were superb. The next course was cod with bouillabaise, lemon and fennel. The fish was cooked to perfection and each of the other elements complemented the fish perfectly. The meat course was Hoggett (a cut above lamb, being able to live longer and graze well) with asparagus and garlic. It melted in the mouth. There was then an optional cheese course at an extra cost, that we didn't participate in. The dessert was beautifully presented cuban chocolate with hazlenut and armangnac. It is definitely worth staying for the petit fours as there was a really good surprise about them. Alex Payne and his team definitely are worthy of the Michelin Star and it is great to find this quality of cooking outside of London. The wine list had a good range of reasonably priced glasses and bottles. They served high quality coffee, which was a pleasant surprise. Beyond the restaurant the grounds are well worth exploring, particularly if the weather is good. In terms of value for money for the food served, it certainly is.

As always, the food part of lunch at the Estate Grill was superb. However the service was absolutely shocking and let down the whole experience. On arrival, there weren’t enough menus for our party and no children’s menu was provided for my son. I resorted to using the online version of the children’s menu, which later transpired to be out of date and what my son wanted to order wasn’t available. We ordered bread for the table and crudités for my son which then arrived with the main meal. Not ideal. I can’t though fault the food at all - delicious as always. On finishing our meal, we then had to wait nearly an hour for the table to be cleared. We had asked for desert menus and when these hadn’t arrived after 30 minutes, I went to request them and for our table to be cleared (we were outside so were starting to be bothered by flies and wasps on the dirty plates). When we arrived, the table next to us was being used by a wedding party for drinks. They left shortly after we arrived and the table remained uncleared the entire time we were there. We were celebrating a birthday, indicated on the booking, and no acknowledgement was made of this. It honestly feels like every time we come to Great Fosters now, there is a problem. It’s really quite embarrassing for the hotel, which used to be spectacular and which we have been visiting (including hosting our wedding reception) for almost 20 years. The new owners need to have a rethink of their service model because what we experienced today was not a premium level of service and we will seriously think twice about booking again.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening here to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. Every dish of the seven course tasting menu was beautifully balanced. Stand outs were the crab apple tart to start, scallops which were the best we’ve ever had and the chocolate dessert (from someone who isn’t keen on dessert or chocolate). Each dish was presented by the chef which was a lovely touch. Special mention to Chris who was delightful, charming and shared with us the storied history of the incredible building. Thank you to everyone who a memorable evening.

I really can only say good things about Charlie's food, perfect timing and left our kitchen and everything used cleaner than when he arrived! (To be clear, Marriotts come to you, it's not a restaurant...)

They have increased the price but have lowered the quality of pizza. There is hardly any cheese on any of the pizzas and toppings are extremely sparse. The dough is hard, clearly frozen now. Only four choices of pizza, cheese/tomato, salami, veggie or bbq chicken. The pasta was cold. The salad bar is now very basic, not even cherry tomatoes just chopped up mushy salad tomatoes. Used to enjoy coming here as a treat but the quality is disgraceful.

We were tired after a long days travelling and theme parking so decided to eat here rather than drive off site. We (3 adults, 2 kids) all had burgers of some description and soft drinks. I had low expectations and the food was slightly better than that, but for the 5 of us it came to £92.00 which is twice what you should be paying. We were also staying over at the Shark Cabins so had the buffet breakfast in here the following morning and that had a decent selection of hot and cold options. As for the staff they were very welcoming and helpful which for a fast food restaurant isnt always the case. In Thorpe Park you are very limited as to where you can get a proper meal so this is pretty much as good as it gets, go in with tempered expectations and you should be fine.
