The Red Lion Public House & Restaurant in Runnymede

Went to this restaurant for lunch to see what the food was like now as I saw their reviews have improved. Last time we went we said we would never go again but decided to give them another go. We were intending to book for 13 people for my husband’s 80th birthday but after going there yesterday decided against it. I had lasagne which was awful. It was nearly cold and burnt. I think it was made a week ago and just reheated again and again, we told the waitress and she never made any comment at all. My husband had scampi which was fine and then we both had the crumble and custard. The crumble was virtually non existent, it just looked like a dollop of fruit stuck in the middle of the plate surrounded by custard. The service was absolutely dire. That is it now, we have given them several chances but will definitely not be returning there ever again. It is such a shame as the restaurant has been decorated and looks really nice. We used to go there all the time when the previous owners were there and it was excellent then but sadly has gone really downhill now.

I have just got home from a very enjoyable meal with seven others from our car club. We all had a great time at The Red Lion, the food was very good and the owners and staff excellent. A real treat to find a traditional local Pub in this location. We will definitely be back!

Restaurant is clean and looks more like a restaurant than a pub. Menu choices were good. Traditional dishes as well as others. Good reasonable prices and all freshly home cooked. They were happy to swap a salad for chips 😁 There are also deals for over 65s such as a 2 course menu for £12 Lovely log fire too Roast dinners around £15 on Sundays. Best to book

I joined friends and family for a Christmas Day Lunch .. The main courses .. Turkey was small portions mine was like a child’s size And Beef Wellington was served in a small pastry case and the beef square was so tough ., The waiter/barman was the best

Seventeen of us thoroughly enjoyed a Christmas dinner at the Red Lion. Hosts Louise and Graham did a fabulous job of providing a hugely enjoyable evening for us all. Lovely food, exceptional service and such great value for money. Highly recommended.

This is such a great place. The service is wonderful, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the food is very good and it’s reasonably priced. The Sunday roasts are excellent. The whole thing is so well run - and I love that it’s not part of a chain. It’s the best pub/restaurant in the area by miles

What an amazing pub/restaurant. The food was delicious and at such great prices too which is so hard to find nowadays. Every dish was wonderful - lasagne, stuffed chicken and fish pie and I managed to fit in a Creme Brulee too - all homemade and truly great food. The lad who seemed to be running the whole place himself is equally brilliant - very welcoming, helpful, clearly great at his job - I wish I'd taken his name for this review. We are very much looking forward to coming back soon to try the Christmas menu.

We (3 friends) enjoyed a lovely meal at the Red Lion, the food was excellent & great value plus the service was very helpful & friendly. It was also nice to have a nice white cotton serviette & tablecloth! We'll certainly be returning and recommending to friends.

Excellent food, first time visiting in a long time! Standards still great!! Had ham hock terrine to start and lasagne for main, delicious, full of flavour! Couldn't order a pudding as we over indulged! Perfect for when you don't feel like cooking on a Sunday, definitely coming back after we've slept off our food coma! Popped in for lunch today while visiting my wife's mum. Five of us had lunch and everyone of us absolutely loved what we had. Between we can reccomend the burgers, lasagne, stuffed chicken breast and especially the duck breast in orange & cranberry sauce. One of the best meals out I've had for ages (and we ate out four days last week). Finally great service from a very hardworking lad who was doing almost everything in the pub and restaurant but still had time to check we were OK and look after us

What a great find . Went to thrope park and it was raining so came here for food and drinks . Great atmosphere and the food was unbelievable ! Footie was on which was a bonus . Any parents in need of a thrope park revival come here

We visited The Red Lion after a full day at Thorpe Park. We were staying on resort but wanted some non fast food. This little pub is less than 5 mins drive & is very welcoming. Food was good, very reasonably priced & service was prompt and efficient. Definitely worth a visit if you are nearby. Thanks for having us

3rd September we wanted a roast. We both had a bad back and did not want to cook (Not that my partner cooks!) We were lucky as only 3 mins to last orders! The man could of easily said no. Thank goodness he took my order. It arrived nice and hot. And huge portions. I definitely would order again.

What a great pub .We were looking for somewhere to meet with friends half way between Maidstone and Epsom . To find a dining area with tablecloths and napkins ,beautifully clean and great food at a reasonable price with friendly efficient service was wonderful. We had sea bass,salmon,lamb shank and Lasagne all well cooked and well presented. We later had deserts and then sat in the pretty outside space with a cup of coffee. Highly recommend this pub for a leisurely lunch

Sunday roast, absolutely awesome, real feel good home made food. Went down a treat. First time visit here and will definitely return. Atmosphere, peaceful and relaxed. Spent a lovely Tuesday evening here. Planned dinner but stayed for hours. The little kids played on the climbing frame whilst the adults played pool. When it rained we moved under the cover which had ample space so we were able to continue the fun! Food was lovely!!!! Everyone really enjoyed and we had a party of 10. Staff were lovely really friendly and made us feel very welcomed. Definitely recommend

I celebrated my birthday here, it was a great choice! Good food, really friendly, excellent value for money. The kids loved the outdoor play area, and the older kids loved the outdoor pool table. I would highly recommend this lovely pub/restaurant, in fact we are already play our next visit.

Went today for lunch with my mum. Arrived at 13.20 waited In restaurant, waitress serving large table. Man came in for beer garden went behind bar I then approached him and he said take a seat at any table. Which we did again sat and waited and waited until 13.45 when we left! We hadn’t been spoken to by any staff let alone given a menu. Most awful experience in a restaurant we have visited many times over a number of years. Last time we visited was 4th April which wasn’t a good experience but decided to give it another chance - will not again.

We arranged to have a family wake at the Red Lion and it went so smoothly. Graham had all the food laid out ready inside exactly as arranged and we all sat out in the lovely big garden where the kids could play. The food was great, as always and we couldn't have been any better looked after. Thank you!

We had a wonderful anniversary dinner here. The ambience, food and service were all five star. Prices very reasonable and our server, Pearce and manager Graham pulled out all the stops to make this a special occasion.

A fantastic experience. Not only was the service incredibly friendly, but also witty and on the ball. The outdoor dining area was lovely and my lime and soda the perfect mix. (Noone usually gets it right). The food was excellent and plentiful. I had the lamb shanks and my friends had fish and chips and lasagne. All were really good. The lamb shank had lots of meat on it and the fish was the largest fillet I had ever seen for fish and chips. They also open for lunch earlier than other places in the area, which is convenient. A very positive experience.

Ordered two Sunday roasts yesterday - both turned up piping hot with all the trimmings including sauces and huge Yorkshire puddings. Food was delicious - will definitely order again and can't recommend highly enough!

We have had two Sunday roasts and two fish and chips DELIVERED during LOCKDOWN and each time the food has been very good and still piping hot. The Sunday roasts came with all the mint sauces and apple sauce and the fish and chips came with the tartar sauce.

We had my mums 70th at The Red Lion on 29th Feb . There was 29 people mixture of old and young 76 to 1 years old . The food was fantastic . Everyone said that there food was excellent. All food came on time no long wait times and good portion sizes . Staff were efficient, friendly and very accommodating. Overall we had a brilliant time , absolutely no complaints.

We had my wife's Birthday lunch with the family here yesterday. We were made very welcome the food was excellent and the staff very helpful and efficient. It made us feel they really wanted us to enjoy our celebration.

Came here on a whim for my sisters birthday as it’s local for her home. Arrived at 4:25pm to find out the restaurant didn’t open till 5pm, no issue we sat chatting and had drinks. Gentleman working was chatty and friendly and gave us a menu to look at ready for 5pm. Come 5pm we ordered. Food was served quickly, sisters kids meal came out with our starters so she didn’t have to sit waiting for us to finish before she could eat. For starters I had breaded mushrooms, these we big portobello mushrooms sliced and breaded, tasted AMAZING. My dad had the soup of the day, (carrot and butternut squash) he was really impressed (absolutely loves homemade soups). For main I had the beef casserole, loads of meat and the sauce was lovely, happy the veg wasn’t over cooked, nothing worse than soggy veg. Definitely tasted homemade. Dad had the lasagna with garlic bread, again, he really enjoyed it. My sister had popcorn chicken and then ice cream. The portion of chicken was huge, pleasantly surprised as for her main, dessert and fruit shoot was less than £5.Overall a lovely local pub with good homemade food, would highly recommend to anyone in the area. Will definitely be back when coming to see my sister!!

Went for a large family meal (around 30 people) staff were amazing so warm and friendly. Even with such a large group the food was served quickly, it was piping hot (not the soggy kind you sometimes get when it has been kept warm), fresh and delicious.Often when going for a meal in a large group you they make you select from a small menu, they let us select from any menu to meet all requirements (vegan, vegetarian & kids) and this did not hinder service.If you are looking for a place to eat with great food and good value for money look no further.

We have lived in Egham for 40 years and never visited this pub! My husband and I had a lovely meal there this evening. It was well cooked and presented, excellent value. There is a very large choice of starters, main meals and desserts. The young man who served us was very efficient and friendly. As it is mid week the pub was not busy and our meal was served quickly. The dining room has recently been refurbished and looked very clean and attractive, seats were very comfortable. We were so impressed that we have booked to have a Christmas meal there with friends in November!

We visited here tonight after a day at Thorpe Park...starters were nice but that’s where it ended, all main courses were tasteless...asparagus totally inedible, ribs dry and the gammon...well look at the photo!! Totally disappointed.

In Staines to drop our daughter off at TASIS and wandered into town looking for a bite to eat and found the Red Lion. Upon entering the front door we were warmly greeted by, I think the owner, and asked where we wanted to sit; the formal dinning area, casual dining area, outside dining area, or in the bar to watch the Cricket. We chose the casual dining, no table cloth, and were promptly presented with a menu. The cider was cold and refreshing. My wife ordered the fish and chips, her favorite English meal, and I ordered the salmon with asparagus. Both meals arrived quickly and were cooked to perfection. Our only disappointment was when we were told that the berry posset was finished so we chose the apple crumble.

I came in here with a friend and ordered ham, egg and chips. What could go wrong with a classic straightforward dish like that?

Went on Saturday to watch a brilliant band, dreadful atmosphere,, rude customers ignoring the music to the extent that one man stuffed large pieces of tissue paper in his ears and just sat there!! Totally ignorant, but I blame the pub. Why book a really good band for a pub whose customers have absolutely no interest in the music whatsoever..!!!

We had dinner a couple of weeks ago (on the hottest day of the year when my kitchen was shut) The food is excellent, service excellent & great value - 2 courses for £14.95 - choose any starter & any main (excluding steak) or main & a pudding - I had Camembert to start - gorgeous & the lamb shank for main - totally melt in the mouth - will definitely go again & would def recommend

As in area for weekend, booked for Sunday lunch-what a GEM! Excellent service from cheerfull staff coupled to great choice of draught beers and food that was just excellent-and very reasonable on the pocket! TRY IT!-I know we will call again-thanks for a great time.

we returned here after hearing about the refurbishment of the dining room, we visited on a Saturday and they were extremely busy,Food gorgeous as usual lots of choices and all good.Service was its usual high standard always attentive and the owners are always approachable and helpful,a truly lovely place to eat run by people dedicated to customer service and good food no hesitation in recommending this place

so just got home from their last chance with us, DISSAPOINTED, seated on time as I went to the service hatch, drinks order in time, starters order taken in time, starters came out ok, Quality not great, not bad but just ok, prawn cocktail ok, Pate was tasteless, Mains we waited 1hr 10 mins and we'd asked how long was told 2 mins waited 8 but it came, food was rushed and poor, Thai chicken had dry chicken with no flavour, fish and chips, chips were some cooked some not, fish had large bites of salt in, popcorn chicken was dry to the point our 9 yr old dustbin wouldn't eat it, famous fish pie was ok but Veg was really hard and unlike steamed veg but this was undercooked even for us, didnt even consider pudding as it was now 2 hrs into the meal, I had to ask for the bill then we waited but eventually went to the hatch to pay, 10% service charge which was added was not paid, the couple on the table next to us after 1 hr had to ask to order their starter and when we left which was 1hr 20 into their meal they had nothing, 50% off food offer so yes they were busy but bloody hell staff for it as we used to be good customers until the new owners took over and got shocking food and service so with the 50% off thought ok so let's try again, Big Mistake and Never Again, we are done here, many good places to eat around our area but this is not one of them.

On arrival we were a little concerned as there is some extensive renovation work being carried out however don't let this put you off.

We found this place while looking for some where to go in the evening after being at thorpe park for the day. As thorpe parks bar/restaurant closes up around 8/9pm we wanted somewhere with a bigger menu and to be able to relax and have a few drinks, the red lion was easy walking distance and 12am bar seemed perfect. We booked a table and arrived slighty early so had a beer in the garden while we decided on what to eat. The food we had was all bang on really really good just what we needed we also made good use of the 12am bar and after asking for the bill at closing were pleasantly surprised to find our bill incredibly cheap for 4 adult meals 3 bottles of presseco and a fair few pints!! As it was late and the walk would have certainly taken us longer than on the way the landlord was good enough to offer us a lift back to the park which was way above and beyond what he had to do ringing us a taxi was all we asked. All in all great pub great food great location for a meal and a beer if your at thorpe park and lovely owners we certainly be back again!!

The Red Lion - Graham, Louise and their team have just hosted a First Holy Communion Celebration for two little girls (ours being one) their families and friends.

Today I took a party of 20 people for lunch and have to say the food was lovely. Everyone enjoyed their meal, which was fresh and well prepared. The restaurant itself has recently been refurbished to a great standard. All in all thoroughly enjoyable and would definitely recommend it. Oh and I must add well done for serving the food on hot plates!

I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Sorry to have to make this review. We have been here for many years on and off and appreciate new owners have different ideas. We have been here a few times last year when it was taken over and although there was a few minor issue, it was ok. However tonight, occasionally the service was ok and they apologised for the time our food was served. We did not mind this as the food was freshly cooked. When we asked for the bill, which we were given. The table next to us was then served after us and then we had to listen to their conversation which went on and on. To which we then went to the bar and paid as we were fed up with waiting, hence we didn't pay the service charge. I appreciate you need to engage with all customers, however we are locals and are still waiting for our jug with ice and lemon of water.

Have not eaten here since 2016 but booked an evening meal with high expectations, promptly seated and order taken. Meal size was smaller than expected for the price and the beef was "chewy". Would have been a below average but the puddings were good. Most annoying that a 10% service charge is added to the bill with little option to remove the cost.

Have been going to the red lion Thorpe for about six years, evening and lunchtimes. Went lunchtime, service was terrible, food portion shrunk, prices up and the waitress was so unfriendly she obviously didn’t want to be there. What a shame it used to be our favourite place to eat.

Took my mum for Sunday lunch on mothers day to the Red Lion...never been there before but what a find. Food was lovely served by friendly staff. The new owners transformed this place - the dining area looks more upmarket and they introduced a new menu with amazing food. The food is VERY good, with attention to detail, presentation and high quality ingredients. The menu is quite extensive and everything is cooked freshly on the day.

We had a great time at The Red Lion for my mum's 60th birthday on Saturday. The food and service was perfect, for all 26 of us. They helped to decorate the area and set the tables perfectly. We had a great time and my mum was overjoyed with it all. Also, leading up to the day they always picked up the phone when I called and were very friendly and helpful.

been here several times normally ok last time i was here food not brilliant some people on our table started to eat their food before the rest of us were served (party of 8)as food was going cold they were nearly finished eating before the last one was given their food SO thought we would try again yesterday very cold in restaurant kept our scarves etc on chicken wasn't cooked still raw when we pointed it out we did get apology but not offered any compensation of any kind on the whole very disappointing i don't think we will be back when there are so many better choices in the area
