Outstanding culinary experience Absolutely mind blowing from start to finish. The creativity and flare in this modern British menu paired with beautiful presentation makes the whole meal exciting and interesting. The friendly service is nice and the wine pairs nicely to the food. The venue and dining room is beautiful. Highly recommend and we will be returning

Have been here many times and it never disappoints. Yes if you compare to a pub meal it expensive but not for a Michelin star. If you are looking for something a little decadent or for a special occasion I would highly recommend it. Whether it’s for a 4 or 7 course lunch or a dinner the food it so beautifully prepared, you may feel as I used to that the portions are small so you will be left feeling hungry but this is far from the case as with several courses and the richness of the food it’s actually very filling and this is coming from someone who trust can eat! The taste of each dish and balance of flavours and texture contrasts are all carefully thought out and compliment each other. My personal favourites are the current scallop dish, the beetroot dish and as someone who is very particular about deserts the blackberry dessert was phenomenal and I’ve been to many different fine dining experiences including some 3 stars. It was a delight! The staff are so friendly and helpful I’m sometimes come on my own just because why not and if they have time they are happy to chat but are also very professional and on the ball with timings and drink top ups, can’t fault them. The general feel of the restaurant is warm and cosy with an intimate feel but doesn’t feel stiff or uncomfortable as some fine dine establishments do. Perfect for any occasion whether for intimate diners for two or family get together me, business lunches, anniversary or even as decadent lunch for one and a good book. If you’ve ever thought of trying a Michelin star dining experience and felt nervous or put off because you won’t fit in or feel comfortable then rest assured this is the perfect place to try that will put all those doubts to rest.

From the moment that I arrived at The Tudor Pass the service was nothing short of exceptional. Chris greeted me at the door and made every effort throughout my visit to ensure that I had a memorable experience. Alex and rest of the team of chefs crafted some of the finest dishes that I have ever tasted. One of the most impressive aspects of the dining experience was the fact that Alex and the rest of the chefs hand delivered each dish, talking me through each of the elements and the often personal inspiration behind the dish. The pride with which Alex and the whole team present the cuisine and curate this very memorable experience is truly inspiring. Rosie the sommelier expertly complimented each dish with excellent wines and her terrific knowledge. I would highly recommend visiting The Tudor Pass and I am so grateful to have been so well looked after by this exceptional team!

This was our 3rd Visit to this lovely Hotel for Afternoon Tea, as always it was a brilliant Afternoon Tea. The food was excellent , especially the Scones. The Service from the Staff was excellent 👍🏻. I would like to give Natalia a mention, from Reception. She sorted out a problem we had, great Customer Service. Would highly recommend Great Fosters, Afternoon Tea, especially for a Special Occasion as it has added Luxury.

Having read some of the previous reviews, I strongly suggest having high tea in the garden and not inside. We ordered one vegan and vegetarian high tea and were very satisfied with the 19 choices of teas (of which we could chose 2), cappuccino, scones, sandwiches, and various pastries. We had our vegan high tea at 13:00 and stayed until 16:30, enjoying a sunny day walking the garden and woods surrounding the property. The staff was most accommodating, The only negative thing were the vegan scones which were not up to par. The vegetarian scones were wonderful!

I strongly recommend the 7 course tasting menu perfectly created by Alex and his team. The experience was very intimate with only 7 other tables, you are not given the menu before hand which I loved because it meant you could enjoy the food without an pre-conceived notions on whether you would like it. The chefs come out with every course and they provide a little story as to where the ingredients are sourced from. The presentation was beautiful and the food matched! The waiting staff were also very attentive and lovely. We also had the wine pairing and the smellier was great in describing the wine flavours and how they paired with the food we were about to eat.

My wife took me there as a birthday treat. It was food theater, and a gastronomic delight. I will definitely go again, but give it a bit of time so that the menu won't be the same. Allow 4 hours if you go for the seven course tasting option, but the time passed quickly. I only mentioned the time because I had booked a cab and hadn't realized how long it would take to enjoy the full experience.

What comedian makes the sandwiches? Coronation chicken…? Not one morsel of chicken in six finger sandwiches, it was as if someone had wiped the bread on an empty bowl of coronation chicken, a few sultanas and some yellow colouring to the bread…… egg and cress? I think they just showed the bread what an egg looks like and threw in one strand of cress per finger sandwich. There’s no depth of fillings to these sandwiches…. Seriously, get the catering manager to sit and eat a plate of these ‘sandwiches’ and then justify them suiting a £300 bill for six people!!! Absolutely diabolical.

We had a booking for 2.30 pm for Afternoon Tea at the hotel. We arrived at 2.35 and before we were actually served with anything at all, we waited 50 minutes. The table was not only wobbly; it was unsafe: a square piece of wood placed on top of a round table! If one of us had momentarily forgotten that the table top was finely balanced and basically unsafe, the whole table, complete with kettles of tea would have cascaded on our legs and given us serious burns. The service was very slow and we were never asked at all if everything was ok or if we needed anything more. We did order an extra serving of sandwiches, which amounted to two slices of bread with fillings, and cost another £6.00 plus 12 and a half percent service charge and took 20 minutes to arrive! There was no reason for the slow service as there were only 7 people awaiting service and 2 waiters to share service! While the sandwiches were very good, there were not enough to satisfy us and at a lot of other venues they have no charge for extra sandwiches of such a minute size. The scones were excellent, although the jam was not first rate and the cream did not look like clotted cream, even though it tasted pretty good. Cakes were excellent. I felt very disappointed with our experience at £35.00 per person and next year I will return to the Talbot at Ripley for better and more speedy service and lower prices. Liz Bourke

Afternoon tea was fabulous!! Very tasty. We were served by a lovely waitress who's name we've now forgotten but we want to say thank you to how helpful she was and made sure our needs were met for going above and beyond, people are quick to criticise and put people down this day and age and we want to express our gratitude for this lovely waitress, very thoughtful and attentive, we gave her £10 tip and hope she got a little something out of it for herself! Thank you so so much! 🩷

A unique and exceptional experience from start to finish. My partner and I came here for a birthday lunch in April. We had the 4 course tasting menu but it felt more like a 10 course tasting menu as there were so many extra snacks including a bread course. The food was absolutely exquisite. We were blown away by the creativity, flavours and presentation. Standout dishes were the beetroot starter with horseradish sorbet and the turbot fish course with morel mushrooms and red prawns. The service was fantastic from start to finish. The chefs also serve each dish to the table and give a description of each dish as it is presented. Great Fosters is in beautiful surroundings and the restaurant itself is small, cosy and with a very chilled and sophisticated ambience. But without feeling to stuffy or formal. The wine and cocktail selection is also great. For a Michelin star restaurant, we also thought the tasting menu at £80 per head was great value for everything we had. Highly recommend. Thank you to the Tudor Pass team for a fantastic experience and exceptional food.

My husband and I and another couple wanted to end our vacation with a high note so we decided to dine at The Tudor Pass. We have been to other Michelin star restaurants and had high expectations and The Tudor Pass exceeded our expectations and we can honestly say it was an experience we will never forget. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant we were greeted with warmth and sophistication. The Tudor Pass interior was elegant and impeccably designed. The staff at The Tudor Pass was professional, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and ensured our needs were met throughout our meal service. The dishes that were presented to us throughout the evening were nothing short of culinary masterpieces. It does not do it justice to say each plate was an exquisite work of art. Chef Alex carefully curated and beautifully presented each plate. The flavors were bold and unexpected. I am a vegetarian and the plates that were designed around my preference were amazing. My husband (who is not a vegetarian) was blown away by the scallops -- he described them as cooked to perfection with a delicate caramelization that melted in his mouth. He’s had a lot of scallops in his life and was surprised that scallops could taste so much differently than he’s ever experienced before. The wine pairing was also excellent and it was amazing how each one complimented and elevated each dish. The desserts were extraordinary – indescribable -- you have to experience them firsthand. It is hard to truly describe our dining experience at The Tudor Pass but it was an extraordinary journey that transcends the boundaries of traditional dining. It was an adventure that awakened our senses and left us with a memory of a lifetime. We highly recommend this experience for anyone who is seeking an extraordinary gastronomic experience that goes way above and beyond any traditional dining.

Everything was truly perfect, the team behind all of this is extraordinary. The service is unreal and the food is amazing. One thing though, most cutleries smell like fish, which ruins the taste of other non-fish dishes. Either use different cutleries or wash them separately/repeatedly. It totally ruined my desert which is sad. Hence my four star.

Came here last week with my wife for my birthday. We live locally & had actually been to Alex's previous chef's table at Crockers in Henley (which we thoroughly enjoyed) so were excited to see what he had done here at The Tudor Pass. We were not disappointed. Firstly the location is stunning - Great Fosters is beautiful, and the room that The Tudor Pass is set is in wonderful. Only small (7 or so tables) but with a lovely ambience in a grand looking space. The staff were fantastic - couldn't fault at all, they really were brilliant & so friendly. So the tasting menu is a 'surprise' in the sense you don't see the menu until the end of your meal. I won't give anything away or post photos to spoil, but every single course was amazing - a real top tier tasting menu. The chefs take turns in coming out & explaining each course to you which is a nice touch. 10/10 cannot recommend enough for anybody who enjoys their food. Not too badly priced either for this caliber of tasting menu.

Disappointing visit yesterday for afternoon tea. Sat inside because of the weather which would have been fine, apart from the abundance of wasps circling. On numerous occasions we had to stand up and fight them away from the food. The staff did try to help but once left with our food, they were nowhere to be seen. One other disappoint was the fact that we asked for a replacement of the smoked salmon finger sandwich and the first round of sandwiches we were accommodated. On requesting further sandwiches, again with the replacement of smoked salmon, we were told that this was not possible! Mmmm … ok! So when asked again if the sandwiches could be the same as the first set, we were told the head chef had categorically told them no replacements ! For the standard and prices being paid at Great Fosters I was surprised that one small finger sandwich could not be replaced with something else. Service charge was added and we did pay this, however I would Not choose to go back again or recommend Very disappointing

Hugely disappointing afternoon tea, which had been booked in advance. Shown to our table by a young member of staff who said someone would be with us “soon”. After 10+ minutes, we had to go and look for someone to attend to us. There was no apology, but several people then spoke to us: 1 asked me to confirm the name as we hadn’t actually been checked in; another said he’d check the food intolerance information, but never came back to us; once the tea had been delivered (which was absolutely fine) no-one checked that we were happy with it. When I asked for the bill from the only staff member who came into the room, I told him we wouldn’t be paying the 12.5% service charge - there was apparently no “manager” to amend the bill, so he changed it manually - no-one though thought to ask why we weren’t prepared to pay it …

We went for an afternoon tea with family. I have been to various afternoon tea establishments and this has to be one of the worst. We were stuck in a windowless room, we were basically in a wine store. The quality of the food was not great, scones were overcooked and very dry. We had a jelly made with Pimms, it had an awful flavour, I ate it to make sure to get our moneys worth. Sandwiches were nothing special, I was not sure what type of cheese the cheese sandwiches contained but they were not very nice. The bread was nothing special, in fact it could have been a supermarket own brand. The small cakes were ok, nothing to write home about. At a starting price of £37 it was not worth more than about £15. It was terrible value for money. The only good thing was that the english breakfast tea was an excellent cuppa. I had been to Great Fosters for afternoon tea a few years ago but I would say the food was definitely of a higher standard and we had a lovely room overlooking the garden. The whole point of going to Great Fosters is the lovely house and garden of which we saw nothing. This will be my last visit and I will not be recommending the afternoon tea.

I have had the privilege of dining in a few Michelin* restaurants and The Tudor Pass exceeded my expectations. 2 of our party had specific dietry requirement - we received a phone call from the restaurant to discuss, and their menu was amended accordingly with special treats/courses being served. The service was warm and attentive, and as a special touch the chefs actually presented the food they had prepared, giving an explanation of each dish. The quality was superb, the presentaion amazing. We were left quite wowed about our experience. It is an expensive restaurant but when you have a special experience like this, it was worth it.

Theatrical fine dining at its best… wow! We had the most fantastic lunch here yesterday for mum and dads special birthdays. From beginning to end we were made to feel special and well looked after. We were running late because the M25 was being the M25. No problem. We let them know and they were waiting for us when we arrived. We were seated in the most beautiful small dining room with just 7 tables. Intimate but luxurious and very comfortable. We went for the 4 course tasting menu which was actually 12 courses 😂 😋. The surprise snacks were an absolute delight alongside a glass of English sparkling wine. The sharing bread was yummy with 2 spreads - beef dripping and a butter with delicious drizzle. Then 4 incredible courses. We had a Sancerre with the fish course recommended by Chris, our excellent host and then Australian Shiraz with the beef, also recommended. Both were perfectly paired. Each course was served by a different chef and each was presented beautifully with an explanation and often an accompanying story card. The meal finished with surprise petit fours and I opted for a cup of Earl grey. The rest of the family had a coffee. We then went for a wander around the magnificent grounds in the sunshine. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect afternoon. The whole experience was exquisite and completely beyond expectation. Suffice to say, mum and dad loved their birthday treat. Thank you to the amazing team at the Tudor Pass. We hope to see you again soon….

We booked afternoon tea here for a party of 12 to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday. The booking was made through the events team (as there were more than 8) some months ahead of the date. We were told that a table had been booked in the Anne Boleyn room ( my mother’s favourite) and as I was originally told you could only have 8 people at a table in that room, I phoned the events team to question it and was assured that we were all on one table in that room. We had spoken to the team on a number of occasions and as recently as the day before. When we arrived (from all over the country) for our 2.30 reservation, we were told that our table was not ready yet and we should wait in the garden. When eventually at 3pm we were told it was ready ( we had to ask -they did not come and get us) we were lead to 2 separate tables where some of us had our backs to the others. This was not what we had booked. They eventually laid up a table in the main restaurant and we went in at 3.15 (45 minutes after our reservation time). I had been travelling for hours and we were not even offered a drink while we waited. Eventually at 3pm I requested that they offer us something, we were told he would bring us all a glass of champagne while we waited. This never arrived and was instead put on the table with our tea, so we still had nothing for 45 minutes. The service was mostly shabby with teas served at various times instead of all together and us keep having to remind waiters of what we’d asked for.. Most of the food and tea was fine. We had telephoned that morning to say one of our party was ill so they knew there were 11 people. My mother paid the bill but only afterwards noticed that they had charged for 12 people. We then had the lengthy process of getting a refund. Such a pity as what used to be one of our favourite special places to go, her birthday was completely spoiled by the negative experience we had. Shambolic

My brother booked a cream tea treat in the Boleyn room as a belated birthday for my sister. He had made the booking a few months ago, however when we arrived tat Great Fosters on Saturday 20th no one seemed to know about our booking! We were asked to wait so the staff could put together an area for us , but we were obviously put on a hastily cobbled together place with a very small coffee table which was totally unsuitable for cream tea for 8 people. Sadly thing went downhill from there. Our complaints: 1. The table was only large enough for one tiered rack so the other tiers were placed on two high side tables making it impossible for all but two of our party to easily access the food! 2. Our champagne and hot drinks took over 40 minutes to arrive and we had almost finished our food by the time the tea actually arrived. 3.. Coffee and tea pots were also dangerously placed on the same high tables which were only accessible again by two of our party! 4. Only 3 tiered racks were brought out. Surely as there were 8 people in our party the there should have been one tiered rack per couple? 5. The final insult was being charged the 12% gratuity! We were going to refuse paying this, but the waitress who had taken over serving us had limited English & we didn't want to complicate things or risk spoiling our sister's birthday by disputing this in front of her. 6. When walking around the terrace we over heard two male members of staff having a rather heated & loud argument. My sister then witnessed one of these men shouting at a female customer who was having tea with her husband & young son! Absolutely disgusting and totally unprofessional behaviour. Having had afternoon tea previously at other venues including The Ivy in Guildford we believed that Great Fosters would surpass these & we expected a high level of service which sadly was not the case. The staff were very pleasant, the food good and the grounds beautiful, but the painfully slow service and cramped uncomfortable seating spoilt it for us. Would I return? At this point in time: NO

Lovely afternoon tea - beautiful setting, fantastic service from Eunice and Larissa (thank you!) and really enjoyed ourselves. The only negative was that I came in February and there was a noticeable difference with the sandwiches - this time not as nice, mainly plain white bread, not cut properly and in Feb we were offered more if we wanted them. This time it was an extra £6 for 4 extra finger sandwiches. I’d prefer to pay a little more for the whole tea and be offered more sandwiches - all part of a more special experience! Overall though loved it.

We have known Great Fosters for years but haven’t visited recently. The good reviews for afternoon tea encouraged us to book for a birthday treat for my wife which was mentioned and noted. Our room was quiet and comfortable with just one other couple although we believe tea was being served elsewhere as well. We were asked to choose our tea and decided on Darjeeling which was excellent. We waited to be asked if we would like the champagne option but it was never mentioned even though I said we would probably have in when I booked. As the tea progressed we decided to skip it anyway as we’re soon not in the mood! The sandwiches were poor and did not seem very fresh. They were just not up to standard! My small roast beef sandwich had a piece of meat in it which was grisly and inedible which is unforgivable when one is given 2 very small beef sandwiches each. Clearly a lack of care and detail!. The other sandwiches were underwhelming as were the scones which, again, lacked spring and possibly had been kept in a cool place for some time. There was an interesting spread of some sort which the server could not identify and which was not on the menu. Upon having to ask the chef we were told it was mushroom ketchup. It was unusual but not particularly outstanding. The clotted cream was fine but not generous at all and the jam was very ordinary indeed. 2 coronation jelly trifles were pitiful and not good and the sponge was just very very average. This was not the standard of pastry we expected. There was no point in complaining because it was clear that nothing could be improved by it. No mention of my wife’s birthday was ever made and we just had to decide never to recommend Great Fosters afternoon tea to anyone nor to visit again. Service was adequate but we were not visited to ask if we wanted more of anything apart from tea which was replenished. Afternoon teas are meant to be special occasions where small quantities of delicacies are served at fairly high prices often with champagne. Well the quantities were indeed quite small and the value for money was poor for the quality of the food which which we did not quite finish.

One of the best meals we've ever had, attention to detail in the food as well as the service was immaculate. The actual dining area was extremely private and this made the atmosphere fantastic. Every course was consistently brilliant with Alex and the chefs coming to explain the ideas behind each part of the dish. Waiting staff were also knowledgeable and attentive. Attended for a 5 year anniversary and they catered for our religious/dietary requirements. Can't wait to return!

Delicious, unexpected and personal! Most surprising and inventive, yet absolutely delicious menu I have ever tried. Loved the attention from the chef, bringing and explaining each dish, it felt personal and helped to better connect with the food and get inspired by his inspiration and endless creativity. Immaculate service and setting, but the wine list needs a little bit more work, others absolute perfection! (by miles better than the Fat Duck I personally find)

A thoroughly enjoyable and top class meal at the Tudor Room. Alex Payne the new Executive Chef greeted us warmly and gave a personal explanation of his first couple of dishes on the taster menu. He brought out an appetiser his team created and it was fantastic. His brigade then came out with each of the remaining dishes of the 7 courses and explained what it was. They were all so tasty and cleverly presented. Certainly a memorable meal. The wine flight was lovely but a bit extravagant- well it was my birthday after all! Will definitely be back again.

Beautiful venue for a superb lunch. A clever menu with twists and delights. This was chefs craft at its best. Perfect cooking of in season ingredients. Subtle flavours with everything beautifully presented; each course is explained by a chef and the service is excellent.

Better than average. Overall it is tasty apart from the first tuna starter have fishy aftertaste. It is not very experimental and not very memorable either though. I would give 4 stars if I booked a normal table. However I booked chef’s table, which charges £30 more per person. Thought it would be a dining experience with chef cooking in front of you and introduce each dish to you. However it’s just a separate room with the same dishes but charges much more. The atmosphere in the main restaurant is much better. The chef’s table room is where they store the wines. Although it’s a separate room, you have no privacy with the door open and different waiters keep coming in to get wines for other customers. Also, I would say the food presentation can be better. There’s some details aren’t right.

We booked to have a cream tea here which was nice. We could pre-order sandwiches if we felt we needed more. There were 2 scones each and small pastries that my husband enjoyed. We also ordered more than just one pot of tea. The staff were all professional and friendly and overall it was a lovely afternoon. The lodge is like a smaller Hampton Court in beautiful grounds. Impressive

Booked tea for our 40th wedding anniversary and was not disappointed. Good quality food and well presented. Staff were attentive and very willing to replenish supplies of food and drink. Also a very good range of teas, coffees and other drinks available. A great experience in a lovely setting. However, perhaps what was most commendable was the way the staff responded when my husband was taken ill at the end of the meal (nothing to do with the food!) They were so kind and helpful and went above and beyond to ensure we were being looked after, for which we were most grateful.

I treated members of my family to afternoon tea but was very disappointed with the overall experience. We had to wait nearly an hour for our food and everything seemed very chaotic. The sandwiches were dry an we had to ask for more tea. For the price they charge I would have expected much better and will not be returning.

My reservation was at 2pm. I was trying to call Tudor Room since 14:05 to say I was running 15 minutes late. When they finally picked up the phone at 14:15 (being very precise) and I was few steps from the place, I learned the chef had left. That’s the way they treat their customers. I’m very used to fine dining, but this is the first time ever a restaurant refuses to serve us for being 15 minutes late. There are so many Michelin starred restaurants in the U.K., therefore I would never recommend anyone to try this place. By having no choice, my husband and I are currently having afternoon tea at the hotel.

Went for Anniversary treat - very disappointed with the whole experience.Well below average, and overpriced. The sandwiches were unimaginative, the cakes nothing special and the scones were hard, didn't seem fresh. The staff were pleasant but inattentive. For a 5 star hotel it leaves a lot to be desired with regard to their afternoon tea.

Firstly the positives, plenty of free parking, staff friendly and very helpful. We had booked to sit inside, as the British weather can be unpredictable. The weather actually turned out to be very nice. We were taken to a smallish, dim, stuffy room, the only window was blocked by the plants outside. We asked if we could be moved to another room, which we were without issue. The sandwiches were dull and uninspiring, the chef must be really bored, ham, egg, chees & cucumber, all on plain white bread. The filling was so sparse you could barely tell what you were eating. You got 4 finger sandwiches per person. Cakes were dull and unexciting, a chocolate brownie, lemon sponge (like a tray bake), a macaroon and a tart. The only saving grace were the scones which were lovely.£35.00 plus service charge is way over priced for this uninspired tea. Go to the Christopher Wren in Windsor, so much nicer and cheaper including a glass of Prosecco.

Dry sparsely filled sandwiches. The egg one smelt of fish. Just four fingers each. Hard to attract attention from staff to ask for refill of tea and coffee. Expensive for poor service and mediocre food.

We did have a slight hiccup with one waitress who was a bit abrupt with us upon our arrival. We were unhappy with how she had spoken to us, and felt upset as we had travelled an hour to get to Great Foster to celebrate our mum's 84th birthday. Before we could call someone over to talk to them, Manfred, the Estate Grill Manager approached us. We talked to him and he was amazing. He found us a lovely table in the shade and gave us a complementary glass of bubbly. He was very attentive and the rest of the waitresses were lovely too. We had a lovely tea which included sandwiches, cream tea and petit fours. It made my mum's birthday feel very special. Want to give a massive thank you to Manfred....went above and beyond.

Have visited Great Fosters twice before for afternoon tea and it was fabulous but so disappointed yesterday. Before the sandwiches would be brought separately and once eaten them a large tray came round so you could pick more of your favourites and they were on different breads like beetroot . Yesterday we had 4 finger sandwiches which were on dry bread which looked like hovis. Before the cake stand would arrive with scones wrapped in napkins to keep them warm and then there was a Victoria sponge and on the top beautiful patisseries (like seen on Professional Bake Off). This time there was no Victoria sponge just a tiny tart, piece of lemon cake, chocolate cake and little choux bun (more like the cakes you would make at home ). This is not a cheap afternoon tea and we have had better for a lot less. Very disappointing I just hope they read their reviews and go back to the fabulous teas of yesterday

Took my best friend for a birthday treat but felt let down. Sandwiches had little to no filling and the bread was dry on one side. Scones were very nice but lemon sponge cake and chocolate fudge cake were pretty average. Tea was so weak we had to send it back. The bill was £78 just for the above. It really should have been better.

I was given the gift of afternoon tea for two for my birthday. My husband and I were so looking forward to a scrumptious afternoon tea experience but only disappointment was on the menu. The sandwiches were sparsely filled, the bread was turning slightly hard, the clotted cream too hard to spread easily and the cakes very unimaginative. We told our waiter, he could have been the manager not sure, and he gave us a bottle of complimentary wine but to be honest this gesture really made no difference to the disappointment we felt. As it stands Great Fosters will not be a place I recommend or return to. If a complimentary future tea for two was offered I would give them another chance to prove the scrumptious afternoon tea they promise can actually be delivered.

We were frankly made to feel unwelcome during our experience at Great Fosters, which was for my mum’s 70th this weekend. One or two servers were very pleasant and accommodating but the head waiters leading the service (particularly gentleman with white hair) had a shocking attitude and were more interested in speeding us out of the building than they were giving us the high end service you’d expect. Another waiter seemed to be offended at the prospect of us wanting more sandwiches, which we were happy to pay for! Extremely underwhelmed. I won’t be back, even if anyone tries to lure me in with a free return. No thanks!

So disappointing - gorgeous setting, lovely sunny day - but the 'picnic' afternoon provided was really poor and unbelievably bad value for money. 2 crispy-edged sandwiches (cream cheese and limp cucumber and ham with too-strong mustard), one giant brioche bun with a thin strip of egg-mayo (all obviously made first thing and possibly with bread that was already past its prime). Scones/clotted cream and Jam were fine. Cakes again not fresh tasting and most just OK. Choice of very average English Breakfast tea bag or Peppermint - how hard is it to source a wider selection of tea bags? All this for £25. Gardens are lovely and if the sandwiches and cakes had been decent quality and fresh the inflated price would have been acceptable but they need to up the quality to match the surrounding.

We had a wonderful experience here with the delectable afternoon tea, treating some relatives for their wedding anniversary. We had requested to eat outside but the staff kindly informed us of a wasp invasion and advised remaining inside which we gratefully did. Of course there was far too much food but we were given charming little boxes to take the surplus cakes home. The icing on the cake, if I may be excused the pun, was the decorated plate of brownies delivered as a surprise (and unsolicited) treat for our guests. Despite the ubiquitous masks and hand sanitisers it hardly felt like lockdown,

Booked for 12.30 Sunday 3 November lunch for four of us. The restaurant was very quiet to start with. We sat down at 12.30 and finally got our starters at 1.45. Main course came out at 2.15. Service was slow and we ended up not having a sweet or coffee as a large party of 20+ arrived for a baby shower. The beef was inedible and so we left it. Really poor customer service, no follow up on drinks and the staff just kept walking away. £120 and two and a half hours. Really disappointing service.

So bad, it was deserving of my first ever review in 30 years (I'm 30). Please take into account I have never complained about service before in my life, so I will try to give a fair and balanced review. We came on the 24th November at 2pm for a Christmas roast. Firstly, the atmosphere was pleasant and staff were polite. Secondly, they did remove the cost for one of the meals due to it's abysmal quality, I thought it was a joke at first (as seen in the picture). They also removed the service charge after we asked for it to be removed due to poor service, which I will give them credit for. However... We waited for over 30 minutes upon arriving and was not offered food or drinks. We had to ask the staff, not once, but twice, until they came over to take our order. The food came in reasonable time when ordered, however, some meals were either lukewarm or cold. The quality and quantity of the food was shocking (plus one meal missing a Yorkshire pudding). We was given 5 roast potatoes between 3 people. With a very small handful of vegetables. When we asked for more, this took over 15 to 20 minutes to arrive. In summary, I have quite low standards when it comes to restaurants, however even for me, this was an absolutely terrible experience and would not return. Update Following Oliver's comment; If you look at Oliver's replies on Google and Tripadvisor he gives very generic responses and doesn't state how he intends to fix problems, work on feedback or even apologise for said problems. The majority of the time, he tries to deflect or blame the reviewer and doesn't take criticism well. Which sounds 'Distasteful' to me, much like the food. Detecting an ego or complex from him. If I wanted to be insulted I would have gone to Karen's Diner, which would have still been an upgrade. If you're local or visiting the area, please check out; 'The Barley Mow' or 'The Red Lion', if you want a lovely experience.. Or perhaps a local prison which I'm sure serves higher quality food. P.S. They even charged my friend twice for her ...'meal', a rather distasteful experience overall.
