Work in progress. After being let go during Covid new owners have a grand master plan to reinvent the site. Give it six months and a lot of hard work should be able to challenge other nursery’s in the area. It’s not just a garden centre!

We were ravenous when we arrived in Battle village and found every establishment either not serving (chef having a meltdown), limited or overpriced options heavily based on bread or pastry (not great for the gluten intolerant amongst us) or shut altogether...so against our better judgement we decided to go to the English Heritage café at the Abbey and Battleground. The offering there was also very limited, we were served by unenthusiastic teenagers and when the food arrived it was thoroughly disappointing. The level of mass production and lack of interest in the eating experience in these heritage chain cafés is quite sad really and as we ate our dry buns with two slivers of luke-warm pork and dry stuffing patty barely moistened by ultra processed apple sauce we overheard a group of French visitors expressing exactly the same sentiments...the food in England is bland and dry. We were embarrassed for our country. Please English Heritage, we beg you, can you address this?! We are members and love what you do in general but your cafés are overpriced and underwhelming.

The staff are so rude I was standing there waiting for my drink today and the lady behind the counter was moaning about living here and saying the water and the food are terrible. Quite loudly - how rude. If she doesn’t want to live and work I t his country perhaps she could give the job to my son who lives locally and would like a job. Disgusting behaviour Costa!!!!!

A few improvements to take on board. Three vegetarians and one meat eater. Ordered two vegetarian nut roasts and it turned out to be boiled rice with nuts and berries. The roast potatoes and parsnips were lovely, the soup my husband had was lovely and the roast beef for our friend ordered was eaten without leaving a scrap. The homemade ice cream was filled with ice crystals and could not be eaten (which was a pity as it was very tasty). For thee meals, one soup and four desserts and four non alcoholic drinks the bill came to ÂŁ120. The vegetarian roasts need work. I did ask the waiter if the roast vegetables had been cooked in oil and if the gravy was vegetarian and they had to return to the kitchen to ask. Not reassuring for a veggie... All in all it was good food in a quaint restaurant. The restaurant was empty on a Sunday lunch time which I did find strange. A proper veggie roast would have been nice though. A huge plus is that it is dog friendly.

Getting a 2 because you order at 23:55 when the place says it shuts at 01:00. What's the point of letting me order online and it saying on your website your open at 01:00 and then driving round to pick it up to find our your shut. Not ordering from here again same thing happened twice now
