Always greeted with a warm welcome. Doesn't matter what time of day you go, the food is always top-notch. It's all cooked fresh to order as you can add items (extra cost, of course). The staff know their stuff and are always happy to recommend something. In all the years we have been going there, we have never been disappointed. If you are planning to go on a Friday or Saturday evening, then you will need to book, It does get very busy then, and their online booking is really easy to use.

I am not a person who likes complaining nor believes in writing anything negative, but today I saw red. I took my elderly mother out for a relaxing lunch to this pub we and the rest of our family have visited many times before. We both chose the 'special' of calves liver and bacon, creamy mashed potatoes, peas and gravy. A simple dish to get right, you would think and a dish I have cooked many times, albeit with lamb's liver. Sadly, the liver was tasteless, overcooked, gristly with the outer skin left on and quite tough. The potato was mashed but not creamy. The peas were undercooked and had been left out to go wrinkly and unappetising. And the gravy was lumpy and anaemic-looking. Ugh! My mother and I both found the liver quite difficult to cut - not what you would expect from tender, skinned liver. And finding gristle is very offputting, don't you think? I complained discreetly at the bar and our plates were removed. Quite a few minutes later, the waiter returned to report that our food had been tasted by three chefs, no less, and was deemed to be perfectly alright. That has to say something about their standards. They agreed to replace one meal but not both which I found unacceptable, but I ordered a small fish and chips for my mother to keep her from going hungry - even those chips were under par - just like chunky oven chips you buy in the supermarket and not freshly made. The manager eventually - after at least half an hour of keeping us waiting - turned up to repeat the offer and to say that they did not agree that the meal was sub-standard and that nobody else had complained. I was so angry that I did not order another meal for myself and went hungry! I did not want to cause a scene and they were not in the least bothered that we would not go back to this pub again because, of course, they have plenty of satisfied customers. Have they got new chefs, I wonder? That food was nothing like I have had in the past. Bad attitude. No apologies. No-one ever apologises any more or takes responsibility for low standards, no customer loyalty. Just excuses and 'take it or leave it, madam'. Deeply disappointed. Spoiled our day.

I’m a bit late writing this review but reminded to do so because I keep getting emails from the pub. We called into the pub to talk to them about arranging lunch for a large party after a christening. We did that especially because we wanted to know where we might be sat. This was an important event for us. We were shown a lovely area and it was explained how tables could be put together. We booked, and were looking forward to it. We were surprised when we arrived for the lunch to find we had been put in a tiny annex away from the main dining area. Chairs had been squeezed in, there was no room for high chairs or the pushchair and we had to squeeze past each other to reach seats. The children kept having to duck under the table to go to the toilet. We had been asked to pre order our meals, but many of them were wrong when they arrived and four of the desserts did not arrive and we had to find someone to ask for them ( after about 15 mins of waiting). All in all it was disappointing to say the least and we will never go there again. It felt like we were just treated like captive customers and they couldn’t be bothered. Actually we have lots of family events and our repeat custom would have been valuable.

Firstly we could not fault the food it was delicious. 2 of us had the roast beef and 3 the vegan Wellington. Unfortunately the service was appalling. We repeatedly asked for the menu and 35 minutes later they came and asked us what we wanted to eat but hadn’t actually given us the menu. We asked for two Sherrie’s as it was on menu, they couldn’t find it on the till and they didn’t know if they had it. I pointed out where it was on their shelf. They then came and said could we pick another drink as they couldn’t put it through the till. I suggested they picked a drink of same cost and put it through the till as that, or if no similar value we were happy to pay an extra 20p and put it through as water! Everyone had finished their drinks and we hadn’t received the sherry! I went and queried this and they said they were waiting for the manager to sort it out, I suggested good customer service would be to pour drinks and sort out afterwards and not keep us waiting. She then appeared at the table plinked the drinks down and said they would sort it with manger later. We had to repeatedly ask for water. When we asked to have £6 of the £16 discretionary service charge taken off as we only wanted to pay £10 they said they couldn’t do it! But after I am guessing talking to someone else she came back and to,d us they could take it all off not part and we could leave cash! We definitely won’t be returning or recommending here.

Stale scones, poor, lukewarm cappuccino, surly staff. In a village where there’s no competition, complacency sets in
