Red Lion in Basingstoke and Deane

I went expecting a nice lunch but what we actually got was an experience. From the warm welcome, to the service where we were made to feel like friends, but also treated as special customers, the whole time we were there was special. When the food came out it was like being at your nans, it was just so homely and had clearly been made with love and put together with care, this was a meal that made me fall in love with food. The dessert also by the way was incredible and again was clearly home made and it could not have been more perfect. My only regret was not taking a photo so I can share it with everyone here!

We have such an amazing Christmas meal family meal here. Neither of us families were local to the area so I looked this up online. I called a few times to arrange a table and pre-order and every time whoever picked up the phone was really happy and helpful. When we got there the waitress couldn’t do enough for us and made the kids really feel welcome. We had a Christmas meal in the bar And crackers on the table which we never expected. Plus the food was Gorgeous. I thought it was quite a limited menu, but actually the food that was placed in front of us was well worth it. Highly recommend anyone either passing through this village looking for food locally.

We visited here after reading reviews here on Trip Advisor. We were staying in Overton so we went here the first night of our visit. Service was very quick and the atmosphere was fun. Dave, the owner came and talked with us for a while and seemed to go out of his way for everyone. I had the fish and chips and it really hit the spot. Very nicely done! If ever in the area again, I would make it a point to go again.

Sat with the landlord was very welcoming great host even put the rugby on for me. Went out of his way to make us feel comftable. Come from carfest to work went out to enjoy our self great evening would recommend .

Dave is the standard by which all other landlords should be judged! Despite this being the first time we'd ever stopped at his pub, he went out of his way to provide us with something to eat despite the kitchen, understandably, being closed because it was 4pm. He was friendly, hospitable and an absolute gentleman. Would highly recommend. 11/10 !!!

Bunch of us in for a roast dinner. Warm welcome. Waited an age for the dinners to arrive - meat and veg good; spuds tough and overdone. Female rest room could do with a good and thorough clean. Don’t think I’ll be returning.

Went to see a comedian last night with a friend at the Red Lion. The acts were great and we had a right laugh. At £8 a ticket it was a bargain!!! Whilst we were there we both had a burger. The food was great and a nice size portion. The service was also really good. Overall couldn’t fault it. Well done to everyone on the team. Fab night out 👌 Great food. this is the pub to be at!!! Great staff great food, fantastic 100/10 this is the only pub you should go to in overton. a homely vibe and so welcoming. from the customers to the staff this place makes you feel like home. if you don't come here whilst in overton you have wasted a journey

The Sunday lunch was delicious, we enjoyed the roast beef, turkey and Yorkshire puddings, with plenty of vegetables. The apple crumble and custard pudding was also lovely. A very friendly and warm welcome with great service. Thank you and we will be back

Warm welcome from staff and customers and able to choose our table. Friendly and polite staff so we ordered drinks. Two of us were driving so looking for low to medium strength beer. All appeared to be in the 4.6 to 4.9 ABV range. My wife asked for mineral water, only tap was available. We ordered Sunday lunch. Impossible to cut my wife's pork which was replaced by overcooked chicken; tough and inedible. Cauliflower cheese as an addition to the other meals appeared to lack cheese. Roast beef (the cut just below sirloin) , very generous portion but impossible to cut with a standard knife. Roast potatoes soggy, Yorkshire pud likewise, vegetables undercooked. Showed the boss the four uneaten dishes and he claimed not to understand our criticisms but immediately and very correctly deducted the cost of the food and charged us only for the drinks. There was no argument and we were treated kindly and wished well on leaving. Nice people, good service but awful food.

Family Sunday lunch with great choices of meats, & some good starters too! Lots of veggies included, staff great & helpful, & nice restaurant area with plenty of space & relaxed environment!! Definitely worth a Sunday lunch visit!!

While it is not cheap, the Sunday lunch was lovely, with great Yorkshire’s and roast beef lovely, more gravy would be perfect, but extra was provided.

This pub serves and sells expensive food with poor service , the food was extremely expensive for the quality you receive , the food tasted so bland and basically had no flavour . Definitely won't be reccomending it or returning , they were over staffed...

Food was well below average for what I would class as pub grub, Service was poor no attention from the waitresses, Wouldn’t go back.

Honestly don’t bother, service was rubbish, food was rubbish! Had the pie and it was overcooked as where the green beans! The mash was not creamy or seasoned in the slightest more like crushed mash! Really disappointed! Food at The White Hart beats it hands down

Me and 4 friends decided to go out for lunch Saturday for a meal in a lovely, country like pub. Had a search around and found the Red Lion and it seemed like our kind of pub / restaurant. We had a very warm welcome from the staff at the bar and they were very attentive, they allowed us to choose our own seating area so we chose the snug area next to the fire. It was lovely inside, we didn’t have to wait long for our food, good service and to top it off it was delicious. We had ordered a steak and ribs, fish and chips, seabass and a pork chop. All of us were very impressed by the presentation of the food as well as the taste! As for our first time here and not being from Overton, I would highly recommend this pub and will definitely return in the future

A friend and I ate at the red lion last Friday, and the service and the food were excellent. The bar was very busy, but the staff were so helpful and the food was lovely, I had the steak and ribs and my friend had the pie of the day.

Staff very nice. Meal--- Plate was warm but vegetables cold & not cooked enough--kale & carrots hard & virtually innedible. Disappointing.

A group of us met for Sunday lunch at this pub expecting a reasonable quality Sunday roast lunch. Choice of beef, lamb or pork. Quality of beef varied greatly between the plates, but the lamb was just awful (if it was lamb). Mostly gristle and fat - not a lot of meat on the meagre 2 slices. Green vegetable watery and over cooked and at least one person's roast potatoes didn't look like they had spent much time in the oven being hard and very pale. Won't be going here again.

We went out for my partners birthday last night just us two as we was staying in Overton doing some activities near by. We was recommended 2 different pubs this and the white hart and decided this menu was more us.

Great food served again. Steak was particularly delicious. Wonderful ambience and warm and welcoming friendly staff. Always a great experience.

Came to try the Red Lion now it is under new ownership as I’d enjoyed many a fabulous meal at the pub in the past. My friend and I received a very warm welcome and prompt friendly service. The menu is extensive, probably too much so and that’s what let’s it down really as I suspect much of it will be pre-prepared and frozen.

I booked a large table on their opening evening as it was my last night in the uk before moving back to Australia. We sat at the table later than expected but staff were totally fine with that.

We almost didn't go in, only because looking at the building we thought it was probably more of a 'local' for drinking than one that offered good eating options. Couldn't have been more wrong, although few people present when we arrived (early lunchtime) when we left it was very busy. Food was to a very good standard, with the possible exception of the gravy that came with the roast pork. As regular visitors to the area, we'll definitely visit again, confident that we will enjoy our food

Had a lovely chicken Jalfrezi garnished with fresh chillies. Good rice as well. Ice cold beer and quick service. Enjoyed the Red Lion very much. It was full as well which is a good sign.

Came across the Pub as we were walking through Overton. The food was a very good standatd and well cooked. The staff were all very attentive and friendly I highly recommend the Res Lion

I booked the Red Lion for a hot sandwich lunch for 30 people - a bit tongue in cheek as to how it would go. I need not have worried. Caroline, the host, had it all in hand and tables were laid ready for us. Our orders of food arrived promptly and efficiently and all the sandwiches were delicious I am told. Certainly, my battered fish in a brioche bun with tartare sauce was very good. Many of the group spent some time outside photographing the beautiful flowers in lovely garden surroundings. A superb experience and we would recommend.

I stayed here for a few days and honestly I didn’t want to go anywhere else for lunch because the food is delightful. It’s a quiet little pub but the atmosphere is lovely and I absolutely recommend it for the staff, location and beautiful personality of the place. Shout out to Alice and Eden for their lovely and inviting demeanours!

We booked here very last minute as we were visiting the Bombay Distillery but hadn't booked accomodation, my husband phoned up and they were very accomodating and reasonable although I didn't initially think much more than it being somewhere to sleep, I couldn't have been more wrong. The staff, especially Caroline and Shannon, were so accomodating and welcoming, the room was lovely, we enjoyed the company of them and the locals ahead of our tour (The distillery is within easy walking distance too.) After we returned we wanted to eat there as it had been so nice beforehand, the food was very tasty, my husband had the duck lasagne which was the largest portion either of us had seen. We would certainly recommend this place to others!!

We had lunch here before going to Bombay Saphire. My husband and I shared some bruschetta - probably the best we've ever had! My duck lasage was delicious and the chocolate brownie as lovely and I'm reliably informed that the creme brulee was also excellent. Service was excellent - they even put a candle in hubbies dessert when I told them it was his birthday - will definately visit again.

Cracking gastro pub standard burger served today alongside spicy chicken salad and a very caring service who couldn't do enough for our two year old. Red Lion really serving up some excellent ideas and quality for lunch and dinner.

18 of us had a wonderful lunchtime last Saturday, the food was absolutely delicious (vegetarians being well catered for), the staff very helpful and we all enjoyed the bonus of playing skittles in the private function room. The proximity to the Bombay Sapphire Distillery was also ideal (which was our second port of call), being only a short ride away on the no. 76 Stagecoach Service. Thank you to Caroline and her staff for making our event a success.

I could not recommend this pub highly enough. Situated in the heart of a beautiful Hampshire village. The food was outstanding and so much variety, especially on the specials board. All the staff were excellent and very accommodating. Dog friendly too!!

Me and my NCT mummy friend went for lunch with our 6/7 month old babies, another friend who lives locally in Overton had cancelled the same day but we decided to go ahead anyway. When we arrived the pub was closed so we left our cars and went for a walk instead. We came back to find the landlady had blocked in our cars.

I visited the Red Lion today on a very wet and miserable day and was cheered by the lovely Christmas decorations and the cheerful wood burner. The meal was excellent I had steak and chips served with mushrooms and tomato. The steak was that tender it was like cutting through butter and was absolutely delicious I cannot remember ever having such a succulent steak. It came with chips to die for, dry and crispy. I shall certainly be returning on a regular basis

Rented the barn for our Christmas meal. Walking through the glass doors we were met with a real feeling of celebration with decorations, subtle lighting and nicely laid tables.

We stopped here for lunch after our tour around the gin factory. The three course lunch was delicious and the staff were professional and friendly. The specials were particularly good and all extremely reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend it as part of a trip to the area. The visit to The Red Lion certainly ended our day on a high!

A warm and happy welcoming for my first visit to this pub. We ordered the chicken pie with mash and peas (£11.50) and the burger with chips (£12.95) and all of it was excellent. Good flavours and textures and excellent gravy all combined to make a meal I couldn't fault. Will definitely be back.

This is what Sundays are made for - a warm and cozy country pub with an equally warm welcome. The food was out of this world! A sensational menu executed with excellence. Highly recommend this place!

Ate her last weekend, busy local pub but friendly to visitors, with a lovely meal which I had booked a table in advance.

Looked forward to going in to this pub going by the reviews but despite the website saying they are open 12-3 during the day time and we were there at 12:20 the pub was closed with no signage explaining the unscheduled closure.Unlikely I would find myself in Overton again (went for the Bombay Sapphire distillery) so very disappointed at not being able to go in to what seems to be a fine pub.

Outstanding freshly cooked food at amazing prices. Flawless service nothing is too much trouble and the land lady went beyond and above with a lift home as we had costumes too much booze. Thank you Caroline you babe.

Arrived late on a busy lunchtime as the kitchen was closing,told if we could wait for30 mins whilst they finished a large order ,would be pleased to serve us.There were six of us,simple but adequate lunch menu with a few exciting specials.Each plate of food was generous in quantity and faultlessly cooked,as a very picky diner,was impressed.Oh we were allowed in with the dog who was made a fuss of.Purpose of lunch was to celebrate son buying a house in the village,looks like we have found our local as well,many thanks for making it a special day.

Arrived very late on a busy lunchtime when the kitchen should have closed,told with great politeness that if we were happy to wait for 30 mins whilst they finished serving a large table they could accommodate us.Six of us happily waited and were served huge,beautifully cooked plates of food.I should say that the lunch time menu was simple but adequate and the specials board had a good number of not so simple things too enjoy.Oh and we were allowed in with the dog who was fussed over.My son had just got the keys to their first house in the village so we were celebrating.Thank you Red Lion for making it a special day and we are delighted to have found our new local.

Excellent value for money. Chips were amazing. The chef wouldn't reveal the secret of these. The hanging baskets in the garden were spectacular. A great visit.

Found this on a trip out and were immediately struck by the warm reception even though it was very busy. Great choice of food which was promptly served and first class. Will certainly revisit soon.

We had dinner at The Red Lion on Friday (17th Aug). The whole experience was great, staff really helpful and friendly. As for dinner we nearly didnt stay but so glad we did it was fantastic would definitely recomend the miso salmon and the haddock & chips. The manager was really friendly and she spent time chatting with us and to top it all off our dog was allowed in with us in the bar/eating seating area. Would totaly recommend and much better priced and service than the White Hart down the road.

We both enjoyed Lamb Kofta Burgers from the Specials black Board at The Red Lion in Overton together with a glass of Pinot Grigio and Malbec wine. Service was attentive and the atmosphere relaxed.

My wife and I visited here for lunch after a visit to the nearby Bombay Sapphire Tour.

We'd not eaten at The Red Lion for a while so didn't know what was on the menu or wine list. Delighted with our order of steak and lamb. Both delicious, cooked beautifully and accompanied by some excellent Spanish Red wine. Busy restaurant but nice and quiet with subtle background music. Lovely service too.

Not to bad went based on recommendations from trip advisor and google. Hubby had a lovely starter- crab and salmon-pate- small portion quite expensive - well presented. I had Chicken dish was tasty but small portion. Hubby had a burger said chips good, burger nothing special. Garden had beautiful summer pots gorgeous but noisy bouncy castle rest if table area was like sitting in a car park !

This is an excellent venue with a landlady that goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure her customers well being. Would highly recommend a visit.

Hired the skittle alley which is housed in its own function room situated just across the carpark from the main pub and ordered a buffet for 11 people. If you have food you don't pay for the hire of the room. It was my parents 50th wedding anniversary and although the function room has a minimum hire of 15 people they kindly accomadated us and the dog!

Excellent food and the chips are to die for :-) Lovely staff and the flowers at the rear of the pub and magnificent.. Highly recomment this venue

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime having visited the excellent Bombay Sapphire Distillery which is close by. The pub was fairly quiet so parking was easy. We were presented with a very sparse looking lunch menu that at first glance was disappointing but we then discovered the 'specials' board' which had some very appetising dishes both starters and mains. The fishcakes appeared to be homemade and were delicious and filling as there were 3 of them. The service was very friendly and prompt and we were all impressed with the food.

We popped in here before a visit to Bombay Gin just up the road. We had a roll each, mine was served with chips. They tasted very nice, the chips were good, the staff friendly. It cost me £17 for two rolls and two soft drinks, which I think was good value

I love food in this place, reasonable prices as well. Pubs and restaurants in Overton are prettty good overall but this is my favourite.

We headed out to the country to visit the Bombay distillery with a lunch stop at The Red Lion. Killed a couple of hours eating, drinking and playing pool. Lovely pub, nice food, friendly staff. Has a good genuine country pub feel.

Met a couple of friends for a catch up and ordered the fish (haddock) and chips from the menu. It was absolutely scrumptious. The chips crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Mushy peas perfectly creamy. The fish perfectly cooked in a light crispy batter. Will definitely order this again. (the bigger portion next time, I think!)

Popped into the red lion for a bite to eat after being recommended by a friend and I wasn't let down. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Ordered the 3 burger sliders and chips which was outstanding, I will definitely stopping by and having these again! Food arrived promptly and arrived with a smile.

Popped in for a quick bite at lunchtime, but nothing seems quick in the Red Lion. After 30 minutes I gently enquired whether there was a problem, but there wasn't, other than that things happen slowly. After 40 minutes our food arrived.

We visited the Red Lion over the weekend and it was a very pleasant surprise. Lovely pub. Lovely atmosphere & the food was amazing. We just had lunch and the menu of 'filled rolls' is deceiving... Didn't know what to expect. We were very happy with our food it was lovely and very filling. Our taxi then did not arrive to take us to the Bombay Distillery, the amazing land-land of the pub kindly took us. If she hadn't we would have missed our tour and cocktail making. If that's not customer service i do not what is. WILL REVISIT!!

Had dinner here on Tuesday and partook in Taco Tuesday. Had Cajun steak, chilli chicken, shredded lamb and fried white fish which were all equally excellent and good value at £2.50 per portion. Highly recommend this gem of a pub/restaurant.

A friend and I met here one weekday evening and really enjoyed the food. We had the chicken pie and tuna and both were of a high standard. We shared a creme brûlée for dessert which was delicious and big enough for two. The pub was cosy and the waiting staff were very friendly and helpful. Not the quickest service I've received, but the food was worth the wait.

you could quite easely pass these hidden gem by as you travel from Basingstoke to Andover on the B3400 but once you have parked in the good size car park behind the pub you will happy that you stopped!

Real mix of locals drinking pub, and nice separate dining room. Had the platter, baked Camembert, stuffed pepper shooters and and a great dessert. All very generous servings and good quality. Specials looked good, but didn't have them. Lovely friendly staff. In terms of pub grub, atmosphere and staff, would give this place an excellent rating, don't expect fine dining, but we loved it.

What a lovely place. Great Sunday lunch served by delightful people with a world class starter of asparagus with Parma ham wrapped Brie with pesto. Brilliant. The roast beef and roast pork were also good excellent as were the vegetables and the desert. And if you like red wine , go for the house red, a Tempranillo which is very good. 6 people on a Friday night, with a number of different combinations. All excellent. Steaks, Lamb special, fish, wild mushroom soup, ciabatta... no one had a poor dish. Good selection of lagers, gins, wine list and beers.

Food was superb. I had the salmon special and it was just delicious. You can't beat the Red Lion for food in Overton. Shannon's cooking is top class. If you like steak you can't go wrong - he's from California. 'Sweet' Caroline (the landlady) always finds time for a natter (when she's not helping Shannon in the kitchen). The pub has recently started doing quiz nights to raise money for local causes. You pay a reasonable entry fee (which includes a buffet), teams of up to 6, Wednesday nights - next quiz 4 October - in aid of Overton Rugby Club. Nights are drawing in - if you're local, give it a go and give something back to your community. If you don't use it we'll lose it! #supportyourlocal

Best sole I've tasted since I was on holiday in Italy aged 11 (and that was a long time ago!). Also for a pre-dinner drink there is a large choice from the gin menu which I am gradually working my way through each visit.

The food was good and the staff friendly. We preordered our food as there were 11 in the group, 1 dish was incorrect but this was quickly sorted out. A nice pub with a good atmosphere, busy for a Thursday night. Overall we had a great evening and would return to the Red Lion.
