The most wonderful evening from start to finish - food was sublime and staff made the whole experience extra special!! A lovely treat - and that Kendal mint cake pebble!! X
Introduced to Oscar’s by my sister who lives a few miles from Cartmel, we celebrated my wife’s birthday with a family meal there a few days ago. Fabulous food and service and a great atmosphere. The sausages in honey and mustard were amazing. Highly recommended, we’ll certainly be back again.

1st time trying pizza from here. Had pepperoni and the chicken and caramelised onion ones. Absolutely fantastic. My wife had gone off pizza but loved these too! Looking forward to their next visit to bolon le sands!
Excellent little find ! We walked the full length of the high street and came upon this lovely little place. We had tuna salad and a tuna panini - cup of tea and a bottle of orange juice. Both fantastic ! Would definitely visit again when in the area.
Simon catered for a group of 15 of us, providing an outstanding three-course, vegetarian meal. It was especially special knowing he used as many local ingredients as possible.
He was punctual, worked with the kitchen we had, and left no trace of his being there! We are using his services again in the near future.
Tucked away from the main drag in Bowness it’s a little delight. Hand made sandwiches to order and delicious looking cakes. Amazing value as well. Definitely worth making the effort to find it.
So I’m not normal one to leave a review, that being said overall I was hugely disappointed with the meal I had at the Knipe Grill at Gilpin Lake House.
Firstly
- we were show to our table and and iPad dropped on the table. Yes this is a menu and yes I can work and iPad. But with the hotel boasts 5 stars I expect a little more interaction.
-With an experienced chef David with many
an accolade, unfortunately I was underwhelmed.
You quote “My food is fun, there’s always a bit of a story behind it, a bit of nostalgia and playfulness”
Sadly there was no story no fun. This was primarily down the the service and the lack of engagement, talking us through the menu, championing and highlighting locality, seasonally and recommendations. The level of service we received for the price paid just wasn’t up to standard.
- and finally whilst I know this is a hotel with a hot tub, there is something about having a group of people in bath robes walking through the restaurant heading to the hot tub a little strange. I wouldn’t expect this from a restaurant in a 3 star Spanish hotel, let alone a 5 star very expensive hotel/restaurant in the lakes
In summary the restaurant's inexperience staff led to poor service, which significantly impacted the dining experience. The lack of knowledge and attentiveness resulted in frustration and dissatisfaction. While the food showed potential, it ultimately fell short of the expected standard considering the price paid. Overall, the combination of what seemed like inexperienced staff and underwhelming food quality makes this restaurant a less than satisfying choice.
Sorry for this review but unfortunately this is a true reflection of my/out experience.
Plumgarths Crook Road Unit 7, Lakeland Food Park, England
We first bought bread from Lovingly Artisan at the market in Kendal, then later from their bakery at Plumgarth's Farm Shop. Everything we tried was delicious and if we lived in this area, this would be our go to for great quality bread. If you’re lucky you may score a free tasting on their countertop from samples put out and once you’ve had a taste you’ll be coming back for more. Highly recommended.
We were so happy to see pizzas back at Low Wray campsite!!
It is so nice to order after a day on the water.
Nomads pizzas were great about adding vegan cheese and even gave me extra olives when I asked for no red onions.
Our boys ordered a sweet pizza for pudding and lived that too.
The staff were lovely to our boys.
This is a lovely place that draws you in with the tempting aromas of the various coffees on offer. They serve excellent coffee, predominantly to take away, although there are two stools by the window should you wish to sit down. I suspect that space really is at a premium here, but if they could manage to fit in two or three little tables it would be superb.
Highly recommended.
