We arrived at the last minute but Nancy was kind enough to still serve us we had tea and cakes which were fantastic. (Most excellent as my husband says.) Danish apple cake and ginger and sweet potato cake. The café is clean, inviting, interesting with an array of any cake/dessert you could possibly fancy. We didn't even have time to look at the furniture and other arty items so will have to go again when we come back on holiday. Nancy is so nice and hospitable.

We booked two rooms as we were attending a family party locally. The rooms are spotlessly clean and of a very high standard throughout . The breakfast was delicious and the customer service was great from the moment we arrived, to the moment we checked out. We look forward to visiting again very soon .

Called in here on Sunday intending to have a meal but were made to feel very unwelcome. Staff looked stressed and were not particularly friendly. We were charged ÂŁ2.40 for half a pint of blackcurrant cordial with tap water! There was only one table with available seats and it did have cutlery on it, but as there was no where to stand we sat there. We were curtly told that the table was reserved and as another couple left we were ushered to their vacated table. One of the servers trampled on my friendâs foot and never apologised or even acknowledged it. We sat feeling very uncomfortable while the staff discussed their private lives right beside us. We will not be returning

We got there, after a nice drive, before 12, and we were lucky to hit it, before itsâ busy period, where you might need to queue, itâs very popular. Iâd just glanced at the cakes passing, and saw lots of cherries, and I did chose the gluten free cake, which I wouldnât have minded, but the kind man recommended the Paradise cake, which was full of cherries, with coconut and dark chocolate base. Very indulgent, but delicious, and worthy of being my breakfast replacement, with milky coffee ( not Latte) , which a little bit delightful Husband, likes a white coffee, and was equally delighted with his unexpected coffee pot and milk, son very happy with his delicious looking baked potato, beans and cheese with salad., and a nice can of san pellegrino fruit concoction. Really nice staff, lovely surroundings, cakes could be tempting to buy and take home, and that is an option I believe. I intend to try a a sandwich next time, as a good sandwich is worth driving for, and hard to find these days, Iâve heard mention a lemon chicken and parsley ? Is something to look out for

By a mile the best massage I have ever received from trained masseuses. For the cost an hour it was 100 percent worth it. I was so stressed out. I left walking on air. This is a Thai massage so they will work your muscle groups with some gusto. My calves did ache a little while being worked but all the knots in my neck have been broken down. You can ask or indicate they need to go easier on you and they will. When I walked out I was offered a cup of tea. This was a nice touch. The place is clean and really well decorated. The staff and lovely and friendly. If your stressed out and need some self care please support them. I promise you can't go wrong.

This one is a bit confusing, is it The Golden Lion or is it The Lion House? It was the Golden Lion the last time I was in Allendale and TripAdvisor reviewed this venue in 2021, but anyway, letâs press on with this review, a table for two booked for 1430 for the lady friend, myself and the two dogs in tow. We arrived in good time, we were shown to a nice little table located at the back wall of the main bar near a very warm fire, a lager shandy and Guinness were immediately ordered in. We had a look through the Sunday lunch menu, but soon afterwards the first disaster struck, our first choice of starters, the Harissa lamb was all gone! So I opted for the baked Camembert sharer as second but the second disaster struck as this was also all gone too! So we begrudgingly had to go for the cream of mushroom soup, I wasnât interested in the chilli prawns. I opted for a three-meats lunch, but disaster struck a third time as it turned out there was no roast chicken left, all the unexpected walk-ins had eaten everything, so I had the beef and pork loin, the good lady having beef. Extras of cauliflower cheese were ordered. Puddings ordered were sticky-toffee pudding and double-chocolate brownie, thankfully I wasnât too stuffed to eat this! All food arrived within reasonable time and thankfully was better than weâd expected, portions were huge, the soup was good, the meat beautifully seasoned and the puddings satisfyingly sticky and sweet. Service was very attentive and super friendly. The venue itself a good mix of locals and walk-ins creating a lively atmosphere and good ambiance for a Sunday afternoon. Happy to recommend The Lion House but I advise getting there earlier than we did, as random walk-ins might have been in and gobbled everything prior to you getting there!
