We’ve driven by here a few times and never stopped, but today we gave it a go due to the ‘bar cafe’ sign outside. We were only after a coffee and cake. We’re so pleased we did, very friendly staff, cracking tray bakes at a really good price, nice hot coffee, and a good old English pub vibe. Plenty of parking, nice pub garden with children’s play area to the rear with lovely countryside views. We noticed the ‘street food’ Friday dates, and will be back to give that a go!!

We've been here for lunch before and really enjoyed it. Visited again last night for their steak night. Again, a warm and friendly welcome and a choice of tables. My wife and I both chose fillet steak and they were cooked perfectly. They were accompanied by tomato, mushroom and just the right amount of proper chips. Amazingly, we still had room for a sticky toffee pudding and it too was delicious. We'll be back soon... Check Facebook for their latest offerings- Travellers Rest, Slaley 23 should get you there.

Visited at lunch time today with my wife and dog, we entered the pub and were greeted by a very nice bloke behind the bar, we ordered 2 pints of thatchers blood orange cider which was perfect for how how it was today. We then sat in the beer garden which was very well maintained and had great views. I ordered the all day breakfast and my wife the club sandwich, both meals where absolutely fantastic, they were presented well, was a generous portion size and tasted unreal, you could tell all the ingredients was fresh and we later found out all sourced locally. Will definitely visit again and would love to try in the winter when the log Bruner is going!

Will have food the next time I call. They have a range of events on - street food Fridays. I was chatting to the landlord, a very nice fellah, who says they're aiming more for the coffee and cake side through the day and weekend nights for the street food. Great atmosphere, lovely fire going and a warm welcome 👍 Best check opening times before heading out there, well worth a visit.

Simple tasty sandwiches and good chips which were hot as they arrived at the table. The Hungarian Mushroom soup was good. Drinks, sandwiches etc for 6 less than £60. Great value. Cakes / scones looked fab - but for another day. Will go back. Opening times are funny but well worth adjusting plans to go there. Open fire was lovely and the staff / owners(??) could not have made us more welcome

This was our 1st visit back to The Travellers Rest in over 2 years as the last time we went the food was dreadful. We were apprehensive as to what it would be like, it was lovely, nothing has changed except that on the bar there is a selection of home made cakes and scones. Club Sandwich, 2 chicken and avocado sandwiches, 2 soft drinks and 2 cakes for a very reasonable £33.00. We will definitely come back again.

We were staying local so popped in on the off chance on day one and had a fab steak and ale pie with skin on chips, Mrs had Lasagne and chips that was also very nice so we went back the following night the pub was very quiet compared to the night before but we were not disappointed. We both had Medium cooked steak, and the Chef cooked it to perfection. This is a traditional pub serving excellent quality food.

A cosy little pub, dog friendly, local beers on cask and a hearty pub food menu. Bedroom was clean and cosy but probably not suitable if you're a light sleeper wanting an early night as a bit of noise from the pub below echos up. Deadly quiet countryside so no noise whatsoever after the pub closed though.

Very over priced, which I wouldn’t even mind so much if it was delicious food but I can honestly say it was the worst scampi and chips I’ve ever eaten in my life! The plate was swimming in grease, I don’t know if the oil used was just old or if they just use really horrible oil but it tasted foul, the chips weren’t even cooked properly. The staff were a bit rude whilst taking the order, we also sat it the garden area so our friends kids could play on the swings and things and they let one of their dogs out of the staff only area without keeping a watch on it and it lunged towards us snapping and barking and then it dedicated on the grass and they didn’t even check to see if it had done it’s business just shouted for it to come back in leaving the poop where the kids could have fell in it or for anyone to step in. Totally disgusting! We have a dog at home who we did not bring so had poop bags in the car so picked up the poop ourselves, but really very poor, will definitely not be returning!

Shocking attitude, be warned don’t go there, go to the excellent ‘Rose and Crown’ in Slaley village itself, a friendly, welcoming community owned pub with excellent food and service, (5 stars). My wife and I have eaten in the ‘Travellers Rest’ on two occasions in the past six months and the food has been ok and the staff courteous, although I did notice the chef does spend a lot of time behind the bar surveying the customers rather than in the kitchen, even during fairly busy periods. I pre-booked a table for two on the evening of 22nd July, 2021. On being seated there was a bit of a delay with the drinks order but made no comment about this as I noticed the manager appeared to be under a degree of stress in working with an inexperienced waitress. Two other new customers entered the premises seeking service, obviously looking for a table, but were ignored by staff, eventually sitting outside. My wife and I ordered drinks and two different fish dishes. Although the premises were fairly quiet the chef himself then took a party table order including fish and chips on a table next to us. After about 15 minutes the waitress informed us that there was no fish left as the last meals had now been allocated to the later party order. I pointed out we had placed our order prior to this and asked to see the manager. The manager came to our table with the two chit orders and informed us that the chef, (his partner), had decided to prioritise the later party order over ours. I told him I was not impressed by this and he immediately flounced off, throwing the two chits on the floor, saying over his shoulder ‘you think it’s the end of the world because we ran out of fish’. I was gob smacked at this petulant and unprovoked attitude, followed him to the bar area and suggested to him that good customer service may involve offering a customer alternative menu choices rather than being rude. At this point he began to shriek hysterically repeatedly yelling at me to get out of the pub. I told him I intended to place a customer review on social media at which point he insulted me calling me a ‘d---head’ and screamed at me to get out and that I was barred. All of this behaviour could be clearly heard by customers inside the pub and outside in the car park. At this point the chef, his partner, came out of the kitchen came up close to me, with his ample stomach touching me and said ‘I’m going to put you on your back’. I told him to step back out of my personal space and not to threaten me with physical violence as this behaviour and that of his partner swearing at me was unacceptable, unprofessional and unbecoming of responsible pub landlords. I left the premises having conducted myself in a calm, reasonable manner, not raising my voice and at no point swearing or threatening physical violence. My wife and I retired to the nearby ‘Rose and Crown’ in Slaley village itself, and had excellent meal and service where we were made to feel welcome by friendly staff and customers. I wish we had gone there in the first place. We later discovered a number of locals no longer frequent the ‘Travellers Rest’ under its present management due to a raft of customer service issues. Further research has revealed that other previous customers have experienced rudeness and inappropriate behaviour from the management who frequently run out of multiple food dishes on the menu. We certainly won’t be visiting the premises again and advise others to give it a wide berth.
