No. 1 Fleet Street

Dee, Dumfries & Galloway
03/11/2020: Managed to secure a table at third attempt . Current distancing restrictions have cut the number of covers but restaurant still felt vibrant as it was full .The menu had many temting options but in the end we elected to go for the specials of dressed local crab and loin pork chop with various accompaniements , in hindsight we could probably have managed with just one of each as the portions were very generous , the pork especially so and we did end up taking a doggy bag away . Service was prompt and friendly and although the price is maybe higher than other venues in the area it was justified by the whole package offered.
13/10/2020: I visited with my family (including a 1 and 3 year old). The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food and service was outstanding.

Lemon and Thyme Restaurant

Kelso and District, Scottish Borders
10/12/2020: Simply gorgeous food, well presented, and great service, with a bit of banter. The menu is really interesting and varied. I had the cod slouvaki, which was delicious. I was also really pleased to see mocktails on the drinks menu, having given up alcohol some months ago. My only gripe would be it was a bit cold, but I asked for the overhead heater to be turned up. Going back in a week, can’t wait!
11/10/2020: We ate early one Saturday evening and both had the Chicken and Prawn Pad Thai. Quite frankly I could have licked the plate clean it was that tasty! Chocolate torte for pudding was also very yummy. Decent bottle of white wine which was not extortionatly priced too. We were served by a lovely friendly Ocadian waitress. I think they could probably make the interior a wee bit more cosy though, tablecloths would have been nice. Maybe because of Covid it is easier to keep it simple? We would definitely return when we are next in Kelso.

The Steamboat Inn

Lochar, Dumfries & Galloway
20/12/2020: Always friendly andaccomodating. Dog friendly. The Steamboat is a great asset to the village and draws in people from the wider locality as well as tourists in season for its location, service and general ambiance as well as the consistently good pub grub and specials. The managemnet run a tight ship in respect of Covid but in a nice respectful way!
11/12/2020: Visited recently for a family meal. First class service from really friendly staff who spent time talking to you. Food was excellent. Really tasty and homemade. Great portions and good overall value. Will definitely return

The Horseshoe Inn

Tweeddale West, Scottish Borders, 45-60£
29/11/2020: Superb meal at very reasonable prices in a relaxing environment. Plenty of o choice on all three courses so, of course, we will have to return to sample some of the other dishes that we were tempted with. Already planning to return and given that it is over two hours drive away I think that is a recommendation.
23/11/2020: We visited on a Saturday evening and despite the restaurant being busy the service was first class. All covid safety measures in place and staff followed them correctly. The food was lovely (I had beef with mash and marrow which was just lush!) - never been disappointed when eating here.

Cavens Arms

Nith, Dumfries & Galloway
04/12/2020: Ate at the Caven Arms last night with friends who we dine with regularly. They frequent the place quite often. It was our first visit since 2014. Won’t wait as long for our next visit because what we had to eat was extremely good! Big recommendation for the fish goujons, all four of us had them as a starter, excellent We haven’t eaten out much this year due to Covid, but the regulations in place at Cavens were the best we have seen anywhere! Hand sanitizer’s everywhere. The bar and restaurant area and beer garden were very busy, especially for a chilly Thursday night. Can’t wait for a revisit
30/11/2020: Starting with the positives. Staff were great, friendly and attentive. Always seen to be hand sanitising and were always having a laugh with tables around. Great to see such a lovely family atmosphere. Plenty of money been spent on screens inside and also an outside area.Came on recommendation from a local family member. Food arrived very quickly which to me is a sign of microwaved unfortunately and, and what was on the plate confirmed my suspicions I belive! Main course was bog standard chicken breast with some melted cheese on top and some uninspiring overcooked boiled vegetables. Chips obviously a cheap frozen chip. A shame. Didn't opt for dessert.Wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend.

The Clachan Inn Restaurant

Castle Douglas and Glenkens, Dumfries & Galloway
18/12/2020: Just about all round perfect - good food, pleasant unobtrusive staff, warm atmosphere. Everything was well managed to cope with the restrictions but again unobtrusive. A very cheering experience in these difficult times. Thank you
05/11/2020: Booked a table for 6.30pm. Had to wait for someone to come and seat us which was ok. All table service due to current guidelines. Prices very reasonable. Things went down hill for my husband, he wanted the venison, they had ran out. Then ordered the beef for a main. I had Haggis scotch egg and husband Mussels to start. They were lovely and came quite quickly. However, we have quite a wait for our mains and we're getting worried as we only had until 8pm to eat. The mains arrived at 7.20, I had the Scottish battered fish. Batter was a little soggy and the chips were frozen chips, even tho they are advertised as triple cooked, I would have expected home made. My husband then was given Hake, which he didn't order. Due to the time limit he had no choice but to have it. Wasn't offered an alternative either. He did enjoy it. We then asked for the bill after rushing our food, only to find they had still charged us for the more expensive beef. I understand in the current climate things are busy but maybe done have some many people in. We were going to return tomorrow before for our last meal before going home on Saturday. Unfortunately we won't be. The fact there was no offer of a reduction in the bill isn't really great customer service. We had to ask to have the meal amended to the incorrect on and then nothing to say sorry.

The Cream Chimneys

Kelso and District, Scottish Borders
30/11/2020: We've visited here a few times sometimes for lunch or just a coffee. Pleasant smallish space right on the main square in Kelso. Always good and so popped in today for a soup and sandwich lunch. Very tasty lentil and vegetables soup (if a tad salty) and we both had delicious cheese sandwiches - one brie, the other blue cheese - with interesting chutneys. Excellent coffee and large, yummy scones. Good Covid precautions in place. Sensible prices. Friendly and efficient service. Recommended.
17/11/2020: Warm welcome- food is absolutely delicious. OMG the home made soup! So tasty. Lovely meeting Piper the golden retriever dog. We will be back. Thank you.

The Black Bull

Leaderdale and Melrose, Scottish Borders
20/12/2020: have never had a meal in the blackbull before so decided to go today lovely restaurant lovely surroundings and lovely staff we decided to have the fish and chips it was ok but prefer battered fish but the hotel was let down by unruly noisy brats who love to scream and annoy customers, so my advise would be to put all brats in a section of the hotel where they cannot be heard, or go when they are in bed or nursery0r school !
19/12/2020: Stayed at this hotel overnight. Excellent accommodation and the evening meal was delicious. We had a lovely cooked breakfast and the staff very helpful and friendly. We will definately go back in the near future.

Kings Coffee and Books

Nith, Dumfries & Galloway, <20£
15/10/2020: Was in Lockerbie for work, and decided to pop into Dumfries on way home to grab a coffee and sandwich for on the go.My original choice in the town was shut due to Covid, but Kings Coffee and Books more than made up for that.Located just off the main shopping street, its a great cafe, and their menu looked so good that I ordered a bacon roll to go with my coffee. Both freshly prepared in no time and were really tasty. When passing through again in future, will be sure to stop here again.
12/10/2020: This is a big statement as hubby and myself are coffee coniseurs but we called here this morning with the in laws and I had the best flat white ever. Was so delicious I had another!!!Toast was lovely bread very soft and enough butter and marmalade.I wouldn't go past here now.Normally Costa or Marksies but this place was seriously so much better.Just one thing I would replace the seats with more comfy chairs and get more pics up as it's a little bare and I reckon people would soon be queuing out of the door.Highly Recommended and staff very friendly too

Adam's Kitchen

Hawick and Hermitage, Scottish Borders
17/11/2020: Great meal with really big portions. Goulash and prawn cocktail starters were excellent and sirloin steak and lemon sole mains were excellent. Great gin menu and nice wine list. Very friendly service too at a great price. Highly recommended!
15/11/2020: We hadn’t visited Adams Kitchen for quite some time and reserved a table for a Saturday evening. The ambience was great and service friendly, attentive and professional. The standard of our meals which we had were truly tasty and presented to a very high standard. An excellent, varied menu which caters well for coeliacs. Nice to see Tyskie available as an excellent lager to compliment the fabulous food. Can highly recommend and won’t leave it so long to return for another visit
