Glenfinnan Station Museum Dining Car

Caol and Mallaig, Highland

Gille Brighde

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland
18/04/2019: I’ll start of with saying this has to be one of the best meals I have ever had ! Me and two friends came from a local hotel and were all amazed at the hospitality we received and how genuine and nice the owner really was. All three courses were aced. Was a pleasure to dine here and we were made so welcome. We will be back throughout the summer and I would 100% recommend this place !
13/04/2019: I was so looking forward to a meal here, having enjoyed tea and great homemade cake previously. I also don't like writing a poor review of a small place but I really don't think the food I had was up to standard at all.

Ben Nevis Inn

Fort William and Ardnamurchan, Highland
18/04/2019: This is one restaurant that you must not miss when visiting Fort William. It is located at the base of Ben Nevis so is easy to find if you are a walker. A bit more difficult to locate if you are driving here. The signs are not easy to see.
17/04/2019: This inn is perfectly situated at the foot of Ben Nevis to capture weary hikers. I had the chicken and haggis rumbledethumps with a whisky and peppercorn sauce and it was honestly one of the nicest thing I've ever eaten. I thought Scots had a bad rep for food?

LochLeven Seafood Cafe

Fort William and Ardnamurchan, Highland
13/04/2019: We shared clams cooked lightly in garlic butter to start - first class. The flavour! Then shared linguine/clams as a main and some of the largest and most delicious langoustines roasted in garlic butter. Outstanding flavour and beautifully cooked.
09/04/2019: In the past, when visiting seafood restaurants, I've sometimes felt a bit intimidated by the menu, which doesn't always make it clear what is a 'starter' and what is a 'main', and I've either ordered too much, or too little. Here at this high-ceilinged modern restaurant/cafe there were no such problems. We were given the menus and told that no-one understood it, and that anything went, and that they would be happy to advise if we wanted help. How friendly and thoughtful. There is a wide variety of seafood on offer, including hot and cold platters as well as equally well-executed non-seafood and vegetarian options too. With wine by the glass at a reasonable price, I cannot fault this super little place.

Sea Breezes

Eilean a' Chèo, Highland
18/04/2019: This is easily one of the best fish restaurants I have been to . The staff are fab to boot . I had mussels to start and salmon as a main -WOW . I liked the place so much I returned 2 more times .You do have to book :)
16/04/2019: I wanted to like Sea Breezes more than I did, and I should start by saying that the other members of my party seemed to have enjoyed the evening more.

The Three Chimneys Restaurant

Eilean a' Chèo, Highland, 60-100£
18/04/2019: We stayed at this jewel for two nights recently and dined both evenings in the comfortable and relaxed dining room. The first night's tasting menu was extraordinary and the best food I can remember eating since the wonder of Massimo Bottura's Osteria Francescana in Modena. The 8 courses were all nothing short of divine. The service was enthusiastic and impeccable and the quantities and timings spot on. I can recommend this place enough... Sensationally good!!!!
17/04/2019: Visited with two friends having booked months in advance. We had the ten course tasting menu and matching wines. Hard to pick a highlight when there were so many - the duck and matching sake would probably edge it for me. Great service all round but in particular from the sommelier who was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. An expensive but memorable meal. Well worth a visit if you are coming to Skye!

Skoon Art Cafe

Na Hearadh agus Ceann a Deas nan Loch, Eilean Siar
16/04/2019: It is out of the way and the road to get to it is horrendous and they have stopped doing lunches but it is still worth going for the coffee and scones with cream and jam or other baking. The views are lovely and it is a haven of peace just to enjoy and admire the lovely paintings of Harris. Really nice couple that run it and I hope they continue to do well with other places opening up in Harris.
12/12/2018: The Café at the gallery of Andrew John Craig is on the nice rough east side of Harris. There are no beaches on this side of the island, but scenic landscape unique to this place of the world. Just a few hundred meters off the main road is the signposted Café. A carpark is just beside the house (disabled parking in front of the house closer to the entrance). The tea, coffee, snacks (fresh made scones!) and soups I had there on two visits in 2017 and 18 very, very tasty. And the pictures all around the on the walls are ranging from flowers on the beach, to local landscapes at the beaches, to expressive dark clouds over dark waters.

The Seafood Restaurant

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland
20/03/2019: We visited this establishment as part of a Back roads tour.
26/11/2018: The lady from our hotel booked us a table here and we were so glad she was able to reserve for us. Everything here was excellent! And who would think that there’s a restaurant from a very far place not everyone knows of with a magnificent cuisine! Michelin should review this place!

Kylesku Hotel Restaurant

North, West and Central Sutherland, Highland
17/04/2019: Had lunch yesterday here and all 3 adults and two children were delighted.
14/04/2019: Visited today with my family. We were delighted that we could take the dog with us. The food was absolutely tremendous. Kids were delighted with the options available. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Staff were friendly and helpful and the place was spotlessly clean. A MUST stop on the NC500. Loved it!

Happy Haggis

Badenoch and Strathspey, Highland, <20£
18/04/2019: Great quality fish and chips and the sit in option makes a nice change. A little bit expensive but good service.
17/04/2019: Found the place on the way into the centre of Aviemore. Friendly welcoming staff. We ordered a variety of vegetarian meals. All cooked to perfection. All staff were chatty and took the time to ensure that you were looked after. Great find.

The Mash Tun

Speyside Glenlivet, Moray
16/04/2019: We were looking forward to eating at this inviting traditional Scottish pub but sadly the food was a bit of a let down. We ordered the chicken breast, which was fine but a bit boring (potatoes and a sour cream sauce which basically was just melted sour cream...), and the burger. The burger was so dry (you could hit someone with it) and the outside of it almost burned (which can be nice if the inside is moist!). The fries were pale and not fried enough. And the sad salad on the side with a store-bought honey/mustarddressing is just a waste of food... sadly a lot of restaurants think that adding some salad leaves with a "dressing" is something customers nowadays want. Why not add a homemade coleslaw or beet salad? Easy and simple but delicious.
10/04/2019: We were lucky enough to spend a night here and thankfully had booked an evening meal as it was fully booked with lots of hopeful others turned away. My husband had squid starter which he said was the best he had ever tasted. I had a steak main course that was cooked to perfection and there is a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and of course plenty of whiskey. The accommodation was also fab as was the breakfast - I had some of the best porridge I've had in years - fantastic.

Applecross Inn

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland, 30-45£
19/04/2019: Staff were very helpful in taking our order and the place seemed to be the centre of the community. In reality there are not really any other places to eat or drink in this area. Having said that the meal for 4 came to £80 with tap water which was not cheap but it was reasonable. Fish is predominant on the menu.
18/04/2019: We’d arrived in Applecross, mid-afternoon, having negotiated the pass, and I was in need of a stiff drink or two! We’d heard about the inn, from a Facebook group, so in we went. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, even rearranging the furniture, so I could charge my camera battery. Got a drink from the bar (the Applecross ales are recommended), although full table service is available. Once we’d say down, our food order was taken (I had the dressed crab with smoked salmon (washed down with a large chilled glass of Sauvignon), and my wife had the gammon ham, egg and chips. Both dishes were superb! To finish, I had a scoop each of treacle (!) and syrup (!) ice cream, and my wife had the banana split, with black currant ice cream (weird choice). No menus by the way ... everything’s on a series of large blackboards, and it’s quite a selection! I bought a couple of gift packs of their beer (at £12 a pop), and the whole bill (including the packs), came in at less than £60. Loved it

Plockton Inn

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Highland
14/04/2019: Superb fish platter. Lots of different tasty fish and shellfish. Tastefully decorated and attentive service.
10/04/2019: On our way from Fort Augustus to Skye, we were told to stop off in Plockton especially if we wanted the best seafood in Scotland and they weren't wrong. We stopped off for lunch and had fresh local caught prawns and another starter of Harris gin infused smoked salmon - both were just superb and large portions. My husband had the main of fish pie which was also beautiful. The Inn itself is lovely and the staff were all great. Totally recommend coming here, we certainly intend to return.

Fjara Cafe Bar

Lerwick South, Shetland Islands, <20£
14/04/2019: Ate here fairly late, just before they stopped serving food. And it was still bustling and full of locals having coffee and small tables of people have meals. Beautiful venue overlooking the sea.
14/04/2019: We booked for lunch with family on Up Helly Aa day. It was absolutely mobbed but the staff were very calm. Our meal was lovely and freshly cooked. We love coming here!
