Amazing place and delicious food.
The staff were very polite and friendly.
The tables are big and you may share with other customers, but didn’t find this to be an issue.
Abril - 15 . . En el camino de regreso a Baker Street. Entró por una hogaza de pan...
No lo entendí... ¿Está bien demasiado cobrar siete libras por el pan. . . . . . . ! ! ! !
We were a table of six and paid £60 each for bread, salad, two small servings of steak/frites, dessert, and two bottles of house wine). Although the only thing on the menu is “fast-ish” food, the taste and quality are genuinely French. I wouldn’t order the dessert again (I had the vacherin de relais, which was a bit too sweet for me), but I was happy with everything else…especially for the price in central London. The wait in the queue was surprisingly short (about 45 minutes for us at 18:30 on a weeknight - and I’m sure it’s better for smaller groups), but you do need to be all present to be seated. I probably won’t come back on my own (mostly because there are so many other restaurants in the area), but if someone else wanted to go, then I wouldn’t mind eating here again.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience at the Golden Hind Restaurant. From start to finish, everything was spot on. The staff were brilliant warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which made the whole evening feel effortless and enjoyable.
We started with calamari and feta fritters, and both were bursting with flavor. The calamari was perfectly cooked—tender with just the right crisp—and the feta fritters were a delicious surprise, rich and savoury with a lovely texture.
For the main course, we went with the classic fish and chips, and it did not disappoint. The fish was incredibly fresh and flaky, encased in a light, golden batter that was beautifully crisp without being greasy. It’s clear they take real care in the preparation, and it shows in every bite.
We finished with panna- cotta and sticky toffee pudding, and the presentation was absolutely wonderful elegant without being overdone. The panna cotta was silky and light, while the sticky toffee was rich, moist, and utterly indulgent.
Altogether, the Golden Hind Restaurant delivers everything you could want from a great meal: fantastic food, top-notch service, and a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates quality and care in both cooking and hospitality.
Can't wait to be back with my family!!
A really disappointing experience – not what you’d expect from Alto
I’ve been to Alto at Selfridges a few times over the years. It’s never really been about the food – more about the setting and rooftop vibe, which is always quite nice. But this time was different, and honestly, it was so poor I felt compelled to leave a review.
I ordered the ravioli and asked if they could swap the white sauce for a simple butter and sage. The waiter told me that butter and sage is “out of season” in summer, which sounded bizarre. Anyway, they wouldn’t make the change, so I had to go with the dish as it was. When it arrived, I was shocked to find just three regular-sized ravioli on the plate – and this was supposed to be a main course. It didn’t make any sense for the price they were charging.
But what really let the experience down was the service. The waiter we had was quite rude and just had this really dismissive attitude. We asked for a Diet Coke and were looked at like we’d made some ridiculous request. Pretty much every time we asked for anything, it was met with an eye-roll or a sigh. The general vibe from the staff was unfriendly and, frankly, arrogant.
To top it off, I noticed how scruffy the waiters looked – shirts that weren’t really white anymore, stained and crumpled waistcoats. It felt really off-putting for what’s meant to be a premium restaurant in such a high-end location.
This was meant to be my birthday lunch, and it just ended up feeling disappointing and awkward. They brought out one lonely profiterole on a plate with “Happy Birthday” written on it – no chocolate, no effort, and despite there being two of us at the table. It felt like an afterthought.
I dont usually complain, but I did ask them to remove the service charge this time. The whole experience felt careless and underwhelming, and I don’t think I’ll be going back again.
Gracias.
This pub is off the beaten track and if you can find it is a good choice when other pubs are busy. It is very much an old school place that hasn't been updated for some decades. It doesn't play music which is a positive and means it is possible to have a conversation. I had a ginger beer and a single malt.
I got a table for yesterday night.
It was an important business meal and we realized the place was closed when we were there.
I tried to call, and I sent a message on Google. no answer. It's a big shame.
Even today, no mail, anything.
I'm so disappointed.
Happy New Year!
