Alto by San Carlo in City of London, Westminster

Tried this restaurant on a whim and to be honest I think I would need to go back when it is not badged up Lacoste. The food felt like tapas, courses were coning and going so intermittently that as a couple we never really ate a meal together. The best part was the strawberries and Italian baked meringue.. delicious. The rest was ordinary. As I say I think to be fair we just picked a naff collaboration

The restaurant is located in an amazing location. The food was lovely, unfortunately the service was somewhat poor. There were several members of staff stood waiting around whilst waiting for the food to be cooked. This would have been a good opportunity for drinks to be served. Our food was served before we received our drinks. It is a shame as the service lets down the beautiful surroundings and fantastic foods. Small tweak's would make a massive difference.

The service really let this restaurant down. Our waiter seemed completely uninterested in being there and had little manners. Calamari was attempted to be bought over to us 4 times even though we hadn't ordered this dish. No cocktail menu was offered (you have to ask for this) and if any food is unavailable, the waiter (in our experience) stood over us and waited until we had chosen an alternate dish, all while looking highly frustrated with us. Food was ok but service thoroughly let this experience down

Poor from start to finish. The waiter seemed to have an attitude throughout the meal after I chased to place our order and being sat for 15mins with no service. Grumpy from the start, impossible to get attention to order extra drinks, had to go and find salt and pepper from other tables, then when the bill arrived extra dishes have been added we hadn't ordered plus a 12.5%. Food was just okay.

If you’re the sort of person who puts your life on instagram and enjoys bang average food this is the place for you. Arrived on time for our table and we were seated relatively quickly. The tables were all crammed together, this may have been because the roof was on and the doors closed, it had been raining. We ordered cocktails which were nice. They were served with a massive ice cube so didn’t have much to drink. When we order our food we were told the food just comes when it ready as they don’t serve starters and mains separately because it’s ‘tapas’ who knew Italian was tapas or Fillet steak with chips and veg. Mains were arriving before we’d eaten the starters. Didn’t order dessert as we couldn’t get out quick enough. Don’t waste your money. On a positive note the staff were very nice.

I only gave 1 out of 5 stars to be able to write a review. The manager was worth her weight in gold ! She was the highlight of the full evening and extremely understanding. We were sat at a table next to the kitchen pick up point, not what we expected, it felt like an extra table that had been put there to get more custom . We requested to be moved table. Once re-seated in total it took 45mins to receive a glass of wine. We order calamari to start which at £12 a serving was inedible, chewy and undercooked. It was sent back and the manager was very helpful and offered replacement but we preferred to just receive our mains. We ordered fillet steak and bolognaise, the steak was ordered medium rare and once served, again was inedible, so over cooked that the steak knife could not cut it. The tagliatelle served with bolognaise was extremely undercooked to the point the pasta was crunchy. Partner did not attempt to eat the very overcooked steak, I had 4 bites of the bolognaise out of pure desperation as I was so hungry by this point. once the issues were raised to the manager the bill was comped and we only paid for our wine which we drank. Apologies for the terrible review but we expected far better and it was very disappointing. I hope in future that it is better but we will not be returning any time soon.

Awful service run by badly managed management. I would suggest don’t bother coming here try the restaurant on the second floor.

The food was fantastic, but sadly was let down by the remainder of the experience! Sat down 15 minutes after our reserved time, took 20 mins to then order food. Then when the bill came and I said I wasn’t paying the service charge I was meet with a rude and abrupt response with no apology but instead sarcastic responses at the fact I wasn’t comfortable paying 12.5% charge for a poor service. Then when leaving the restaurant staff whispering and pointing at us when we leave. Overall very poor experience but can’t fault the food.

The restaurant and food is nice and tasty but the waiting service is extremely slow. Waiters forget to bring the menu’s and waited a while before we can order our food

Appalling food which was reheated in a microwave before serving. Bland and tasteless and expensive for the mezze style they serve. Avoid despite the attractions of being in Selfridges London. A overrated place that charges the earth. Expensive for what it serves

Very disappointing experience. Service on arrival was great and manage to squeeze us in. However, the aperol spirits was watered down. Food came out at all different times. The calarmi was cold and rubbery, they failed to exchange or refund this. The chicken milanese was dry and burnt which we sent back. The pasta was okay but the bolagnase was under cooked. The scallops were dry and lacked flavour. Everything was covered in salt. The pizza and garlic bread was bland. The burrata was bland and watery. We dined with our autistic son and found it unaccompanied for him and overwhelming. Our table was never cleared away when the next meal was brought to us and again felt cery overwhelming. Will not be returning and would not recommend. £147 down the drain!

An amazing setting, spoilt by lack of service from the kitchen - yes dishes are meant to come up as and when - but too long gaps on basic dishes and left us eating one dish between 3 from beginning to end. Paola at the reservation is as always professional and ready to accommodate any request. Marco is always outstanding and welcoming. Rosaria, impeccable service. The food was outstanding as always. Che dire.. il locale è bellissimo, siete all'ultimo piano di selfridges e la vista panoramica su Londra è mozzafiato. Il personale è sempre stato gentile, professionale e simpatico. Il locale è favoloso, bellissimo e con una vista davvero mozzafiato. La cena è stata eccezionale, era tutto buonissimo, in particolare la parmigiana di melanzane buona come quella della mamma!! Se andate a Londra non potete non fermarvi a mangiare in questo ristorante! La location è stupenda, su questa terrazza con vista panoramica, immersi nell'atmosfera partenopea e circondati da limoni. Il personale è magnifico sia le hostess, ospitali e sorridenti, soprattutto Vittoria che ci ha accolto al nostro arrivo, sia il personale di sala, sempre attento e simpaticissimo. E che dire del cibo?!!! Divino! Abbiamo mangiato benissimo! Sicuramente da ora in poi, questa sarà una tappa obbligatoria dei NS prossimi viaggi a Londra!!!

Very authentic Italian restaurant with quality food and attentive waiters We were sat in the terrace with the best of the English sunny weather drinking Negroni and the top selection on Italian dishes. Thanks Rosario for recommending the Ravioli truffle.

Dining at Alto in Selfridges is a unique experience that everyone should encounter. Staff is super friendly and accommodating and food and drinks are the best you could ask for

I was there with my daughter. Her carbonara arrived 20 mins after ordered and cold. Sent back to reheat, 10 mins later it was presented to her. My pasta arrived after another 15 minutes by which time she had finished her lunch. Absolutely terribly slow service, I will not be eating there again.

Very mixed reviews but overall a positive experience here. Has its own entrance elevator up to the restaurant which is manned by a friendly member of staff, was seated promptly and also had a secure cloakroom for bags etc. Our server Martina was great, very professional and helpful throughout. Menu with many options (were enough for us), all dishes come out at different times dependant on when they were done. Would prefer if you could chose to have dishes as mains and starters but knew the concept when we were seated so wasn't a problem and meant that everything came out hot and fresh. A favourite element was the nudja dip that came with the croquettes. Would Return!

Poor service from start to finish Asked for tap water for the table, was given still and then charged over £5 for 3 glasses Food all came out at different times, over 20 minutes difference between pasta and pizza dishes and is cold from the start, let alone after waiting for the other dishes to be ready- not expected at all for the price tag Had to wait over 40 minutes after finishing our desserts before we were given the bill and this was only a result and attempting to get the attention of one of the staff members- we were going to order another round of drinks after desserts but decided not to bother after the lack of service! All of this to then to provided with a £20 service charge on the bill which they claim to be discretionary but we were grilled when we refused to pay which left a very sour taste and ruined the atmosphere even more Also had very bad food poisoning the day after which I believe was a result of this meal as this was the only place we ate at This place has gone completely down hill, first visited about 2 years ago and had a lovely time but based on other reviews as well I will not be returning

Cam here given the reviews. Poor food quality, not fresh reheated and service poor Complained - restaurant could not care. Get your customer service right.. Avoid there are better places for the food served. Spend your money elsewhere

Whilst staff explain that the dishes are of a 'medium' size and should be ordered as if ordering tapas dishes for sharing and that they come from the kitchen when they are ready, in no particular order, it can mean that whilst you are eating the bruschetta which is out first, the fish ravioli is getting cold next to you! If the dishes are for sharing, we feel that there needs to be, for example, four pieces of ravioli per dish, not three!? Although we did wait a while for our drinks, we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and the food that we ate.

I booked Alto as it appears on recommendations for rooftop restaurants and I thought my daughters would like it. I did read the reviews beforehand and should have cancelled but I didn’t. We arrived on time. We were taken into a busy restaurant where the staff member looked around and said that our table wasn’t ready, she said it would only be a few minutes and asked if we wanted to stay in the bar area. She then said there was only room for 2 people to remain in the bar area and the other 2 people in our party would need to go back to the reception. The reception is not welcoming with no seating, we trooped back. We hung around and then another party arrived, they were then taken through to be seated before us. When I spoke with the manager he said that despite the other party arriving late they had been seated before us, apologised and said it would be another 20 minutes. We continued to wait. Glasses of Prosecco arrived whilst we waited. If we had been asked if we’d like a drink on the house that would’ve been fine but to presume that our party of women wanted to drink Prosecco was making in my opinion a gender based assumption. We were eventually seated. Our server was fine and so was the food, small plates all tasted good but one dish arrived very late, we were about to ask for the bill. We paid, but not the service charge, we were asked why and explained that service had been poor. Alto please don’t assume that a service charge will be paid for poor service. As for the rooftop, looking through Perspex at the rooftops of Oxford St isn’t what I expected.

I’m a big fan of the Italian food and I choose this restaurant because of the decor and of course because it’s a “Italian restaurant” . I can say the decor was the only good thing. I didn’t expect to be a cheap restaurant of course because of the plece where is situated. But I was disappointed because of the size of portion and of course the taste of food. There wasn’t taste at all. So if you looking for a good restaurant where you want to taste good Italian food, I don’t recommend this restaurant, but if you want a place where you want to take some pictures to post on Instagram, definitely worth it.

First time here as normally can’t get a seat. Lovely venue, like the way you come through the flower lined corridor. The dining room is a cleverly designed space that opens to the outside with retracting roof that makes you feel you are in an Italian garden. It’s a busy and buzzing space, makes for a god atmosphere. Choosing 5 plates to share we enjoyed bread basket bresaola, baby beets, melanzane parmigiana, pumpkin risotto. The melanzane was very good. I’d probably order a salad as well next time for some greens. Service was good the serving team were good fun.

Really disappointing, poor service and the food was very average veal was over cooked and dry, arancini was burnt, calamari and zucchini fries were too greasy. I would not go back.

The food was very good, served beautifully and the setting absolutely wonderful. One of our party was late and the staff were great and we were not rushed. I would recommend, although….a couple of things were annoying; the waiters kept knocking into the chairs/chair legs, the tables were too close and other guests were occasionally intrusive and they also ran out of cheese which we all found amazing as Selfridges has the most amazing food hall several floors below. Whilst I appreciate that this may be separate but it did mean we cancelled a bottle of wine and left earlier to go somewhere else.

So, we visited midweek early afternoon. Initially the walk from the lift to the desk portrayed an air of Mediterranean relaxation but that bubble was soon burst on entering the restaurant. It was rammed and we were shoehorned into a table space against the wall. I couldn’t fault the olives, they were wonderful. The bread, two nob ends of stale rolls and for want of a better word, some papidam. No for service, not everything came out together meaning we weren’t eating together. The sliced deep fried courgette was nice but lacked seasoning. The aubergine in tomato was probably the best tasting dish. The tagliatelle bolognaise arrived, the waiter only provided one of us with a spoon when there were two of us with two portions. He asked if we would like Parmesan cheese to which we replied yes please. The then went off and served other customers, no cheese! The dish was cold. I guess serving hot food in cold dishes doesn’t help. The deserts were lovely. Total bill £137.53. A waste of money. I’d advise doing some research and finding a quality Italian restaurant.

The arrival to Alto is impressive and builds your hopes up……these are soon knocked down by the disgusting cocktails and the smallest and most tasteless pizza I have ever had.

Awful experience. I had previously dined at the Isola San Carlo restaurant and thought I would explore Alto in Selfridges. What a mistake! My friend and I were seated on the outskirts of the restaurant and after 15 minutes of being seated it took eye contact with a waitress in order to be asked what drinks we would like. After we received our drinks we were ready to order, as I previously told the waitress whilst she was taking our drink order of the poor service, she made sure that the food order was punctual. However, after receiving our food; beef ragú bolognaise and a pizza margarita. The ragú was served watery and cold, with both dishes looking as if they were children’s portions due to their size. The waitress encouraged us that the portions were meant to be shared, yet we had to order a second margarita just to compensate our appetites. As a result of the poor service we were not staying for desserts and wanted to leave as soon as possible, yet our exit was delayed as it took the waitress 20 minutes just to get the bill! We were observing the waitress’s actions, and found it almost comedic that she was prioritising older customer’s tables and standing around the cutlery as we were patiently waiting. If you are in your early 20s I would not recommend venturing here with a friend. Unless you are in a large group or are over the age of 30 I’m sorry to say but my experience will most likely be the inevitable result.

I visited on a late Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was very busy. We had to wait 10 mins to be seated and was given a 2 seater table right at the end of the restaurant and next to the cooking station where the staff was consistently passing by the back of the chair with orders , it seemed to be a table added as it was full. Our initial appetiser orders came quickly but the hot food was very slow. Lasagne came first and was very basic with little meat and overcooked then we had to wait over 30 minutes for the 2nd meal so my guest had already finished theirs way before. I mentioned to the waitresses and she did remove it from the bill. I appreciate orders come out at separate times but waiting over 30 mins for the 2nd plate is too long when you want to eat together. Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience due to where we were seated, the delays and quality of some of the food which is a shame for such a stylish looking restaurant.

This place is definitely the one to visit for either a meal or only drinks at the Bar. Staff is very welcoming and makes you feel at home.

10/10! My brother and I went here for lunch for our joint birthday on January 13th, and we enjoyed this venue so much. It's beautiful and the food and service is impeccable. Our waiter was Sokol and he was a delight, and even brought us a birthday treat on the house - would definitely recommend this place!

It was amazing experience my friends came from Birmingham for the day and they was able to find us a last minute table. Our waiter was francesco. He was always checking if we needed anything during our time at the restaurant. Would highly recommend. Will definitely be back.

We have been to Alto for New Year Eve dinner along with kids and friends . The staff were amazing and paid attention to every single detail , from the welcome to the end of the dinner . Special thanks to Paola who arranged our reservations also on the floor there were few waiting staff who did the extra mile to make our night a great experience. Ernest was out super star while Feruz overlooked the success of the evening . Good food overall and a lot of fun with the Dj and saxophonist . Thank you Alto team !

Very busy visiting this venue for lunch with my daughter on the Saturday before Christmas. Great location and views across London. Service was excellent and food arrived quickly. Note this is Italian style tapas so small plates! We had Parma ham, caprese salad, seafood spaghetti and lasagne which were all delicious and just the right amount of food for lunch. Would recommend.
