I went there with my sister and a friend to try they cafe upstairs and the food was amazing, you could tell it was all homemade and the man that served us was so friendly and nice, keeping an eye out in case we needed anything else. The nice lady in the main shop also asked how our experience was when we left too, which I was really nice. We’ll definitely be repeat customers.

Turning left off the ferry from the mainland, Richan's retreat is the first house on the right, 100 yards up the road. Step inside to a genuinely warm welcome and a trip back into the island past. Run by a Westray lady married to a Mancunian exile, the cafe offer's excellent value basic fare - the soup was homemade and utterly delicious - accompanied by friendly conversation and a genuine insight into island life. The cafe also features handcrafts, all made on Westray itself. Not to be missed on any trip.

Simon is the person who served us each day this week. Very dry sense of humour & not a man to be rushed! The coffee and teas are good. Small selection of eats - a fab coconut and chocolate cake and hot pies. Only 4-5 small tables available ( and takeaway). Only seems to be open around 9am or 9.30am, not 8am as advertised. Good old fashioned easy listening music.

After a bit of a walk for a disabled person this place is permanently closed. We ended up at the St Magnus Cafe opposite St Magnus Cathedral. This seems to be one of the few places offering breakfast in Kirkwall if your self catering.

Stopped for a bit of lunch and found this place. The positive - Orkney crab rolls were lovely. The negative - the sausages were rubbery and chewy. The customer service was poor. The size of the regular hot chocolate was tiny. For the price I would expect better.

Arrived in Kirkwall on a cruise ship. We were so looking forward to a meal other than what was served on board. We were not disappointed. We had Panang Chicken Curry with Rice, served with nann bread. Orkney Beef and Ale pie served with broccoli and peas and a generous serve of chips. Both were delicious and just what we craved. £16 each but well worth it.

Busy kitchen on the night, by all accounts. No draught beers due to 'maintenance'? The food that myself and my partner had was fantastically underwhelming...sadly, we wanted a treat as it was our last night away. Steak and ale pie with 'seasonal vegetables', small amount of mash with handful of frozen peas/green beans. Maybe seasonal in Iceland, the shop!... Mac and cheese, surely you can't go wrong? Sadly, yes you can. Stodgy, overcooked pasta, unable to pick up a full piece and very little taste of cheese. Come on! #Serve proper veg, it's cheap. #Take less bookings if Chef is under too much pressure. #Give customers a better experience. # Quality and profit can be achieved, with a bit of thought. I'd say eat elsewhere until standards improve. A fish and chip shop would pay more attention to detail. Barman was very pleasan.

A small shop serving predominately ice-cream treats plus the sort of fudge, sweets and candies that your grandmother bought for you when you were small. The ice-cream treats are ice-cream based deserts with all manner of toppings and flavours (a normal scoop on a cone is also available!). Downside is that there's nowhere to sit inside; there's a bench outside (though you may - as we were - be attacked by midges) and you're next to a busy main road.

Nice find passing through Kirkwall, Gemma was a very attentive and pleasantly natured lassie.... made for a nice experience and good to meet a local who shared his thoughts and experiences 😉 I'll pop in the next time I have more time to explore Orkney...thank you!

After standing for several minutes, feeling invisible, we finally got offered a table. The server was slow to clean it from the previous customer, and it was left bare. Thankfully, the table next to us offered their menu. I could see that all staff were working at the speed of slugs and with the personalities of potatoes, so we kept out order simple... 2 lattes, and two soups with cheese scones. The lattes were slopped down, saucers swimming in coffee, with no apology or napkins offered. Oddly, they both looked completely different too! The soup was so salty it was inedible, so I went up to the counter to inform them. After blank stares, she shuffled off to the kitchen, and came back offering a refund. No food replacement was offered, and not even the vaguest of apologies given. Needless to say I won't be back, but would strongly advise that the staff get training, even in the most basic skills such as smiling and welcoming people. They all looked so miserable, and were collectively as charismatic as a single cell amoeba.
