Stopped for a bit of lunch and found this place. The positive - Orkney crab rolls were lovely. The negative - the sausages were rubbery and chewy. The customer service was poor. The size of the regular hot chocolate was tiny. For the price I would expect better.

Visited this cafe today. It’s basically a sandwich bar. Ordered a crab sandwich only to be told they didn’t have any. So chose a salmon roll instead. Latte ordered in standard size. Waiting around for the food is cramped and uncomfortable. Food arrived after 10 mins. Rolls were good and full of filling. Taste was good. Luckily it wasn’t raining and we eat on the picnic tables outside. The girl serving needed a few shots of adrenaline but it was food

Got takeout. Quite expensive. £6.95 for small crab sandwich and £3.05 for coffee. Suppose the young girl serving didn’t help as there weren’t any pleasantries. My first of a few days here but won’t be visiting this cafe again.

I am honestly so sad to read poor reviews of Julia's place. One of the few places I have encountered pure gluten free options. The tuna / sweetcorn and bacon/ brie/ cranberry rolls were amazing and well worth the price. The wait is because the food is freshly prepared, just ask for the drinks to be served at the same time.

We were looking for a quick tea and treat after a day of exploring in wet and windy weather, before we got back on the ferry. Julia’s looked cute and like it had what we needed - which it basically did. The tea was fine, my caramel cake, pre-wrapped in plastic, was a little dry. My sister says her ice cream was “great.” Issues were: We don’t expect to be greeted with a brass band, but the woman behind the counter was brusque to the point of rudeness. When I stepped up to order, I didn’t realize a vendor was coming through the door with an armload of ice cream boxes. The counter person snapped at me to get out of the way. Believe me, I did. When she was temporarily done dealing with the vendor she took my order, slapping my cake down on the counter. I went outside and my sister ordered her ice cream, and said her service was fine. Both of us, however, were irked that not a napkin was to be found anywhere on the premises. Believe me, I looked. I had cake with icing, my sister had ice cream on a windy day. While the signs in the indoor eating place were adamant about wiping up the table after yourself, and provided supplies, there was no attention to personal wiping. I know the customer service issue is a personal thing probably not shared by all (maybe she was harried and working alone?) but napkins should be just a basic thing any place serving food provides. If there were any around, I couldn’t find them. If the proprietor is concerned about people taking too many, at least supply one or two when you hand over (or slap down), the cake and ice cream. Also, if there’s any way to have vendors deliver somewhere other than the very small order counter, they should consider it.

The cafe is take away style currently. You order in a kiosk (up to 4 people capacity) and then wait for your order outside. There are tables and benches outside where you can sit, or go inside the cafe building, which is currently used only as a seating area (there are also unisex toilets inside). The first time we visited was for lunch. It was the most attractive place we found in Stromness, but it was really busy. My soup arrived very quickly, although it was tomato, not pea as was advertised on the menu, and it wasn't hot, just warm. It came in a takeaway cup with wooden cutlery. I decided to eat it straightaway, without waiting for my roll, as I thought the soup would get cold before I get my roll. My husband and son ordered a burger each. We waited for the rest of our order for about 10 minutes. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I had a gluten free roll which was very fresh and soft, filled with humus and peppers. My meal (including soup which I had earlier) was very tasty and fresh. The second time we visited at breakfast time before our ferry from Stromness. The place wasn't as busy as the first time. My husband and son had bacon rolls, which they liked. My husband had a coffee which was very good. I wasn't hungry, so I ordered another humus gluten free roll, which I took with me on the ferry and later had it for lunch with soup I bought on the ferry. I was planning to buy soup from Julia's and take it on the ferry for lunch (I had flask with me), but it was too early for soup. We were told soup would be ready closer to lunch time. My roll was very fresh and delicious this time as well. Rolls are sold in paper bags with a napkin in each bag. We really enjoyed our meals, the only recommendation is to heat soup up a bit and serve it with the rolls, not earlier.

We ordered sandwiches for breakfast; a bacon bap; a sausage bap; and a piece of carrot cake. The order is at a takeaway hut and the option is for takeaway or a self service seating inside a covered hut. Given the problems with staffing, I guess this is the most imaginative way to deal with no one to serve. We didn't have to wait long. The bread for the baps was superb. Lovely semi crusty criss cross bread rolls. The sausage and bacon were excellent, piping hot and with pre ordered ketchup. Nice cup of tea and coffee and the added bonus of one of the regular locals stopping off to have a chat about the day. Very clean facilities.

Julia, what has happened? This was a wonderful cafe with great food and atmosphere. It has been turned( I suspect due to covid) into a takeaway with drinks and clingfilm wrapped cake to purchase for a hut next door. Only 1/2 the seating inside exists where you take the takeaway food you’ve bought from the shed, or you can sit outside on the benches tables. I’m afraid after 30 years visits we walked away this time……so disappointing

Despite being one of the biggest weekends in Orkney when the folk festival was on, not a single establishment serves breakfast for non residents in the whole of Stromness. Julia's was the only place available, with 30 people hanging around by 9.30am as the cafe sign that said 9am was not current practice. Only takeaway so a bacon roll in a bag and coffee in a carboard cup for £7 seemed excessive. Customers are free to sit at the ourdoor tables but as it was cold, the luxurious disused partly closed off cafe was my option. Farcical experience, limited seating, no heating, windows open and door, freezing cold. Myself and other customers closed the doors only for the owner/staff member to come over, open the door and reopen the windows. The experience was like a Fawlty Towers sketch. My solution to finding breakfast was to head to Kirkwall on the bus and go to Tenabies that is an actual cafe establishment and has such luxuries as waiting staff and heating.

Popped in here before heading home, seemed to be the only cafe open in Stromness today. Arrived to the outside eating area, headed to the shed, ordered coffee and tea, asked for teabag on the side of the cup, young assistant didn't see this as an issue. Went to peruse the very limited cakes on display, although it was late in the day. Chose two tray bakes, interrupted by older apparently irritated older assistant presenting as highly adjitated, she said I couldn't have the teabag on the side as I wasn't getting a cup and saucer!? I was well aware it would be in a takeaway cup, I have lived through the pandemic and restrictions like everyone else! She was making such an issue of my teabag out request, I suggested the teabag could go on top of the lid or I could just hold the teabag, incredulously she asked with surprise if I wanted to teabag on the lid, I was ready to cancel my order and leave if she continued to question this surely not unimaginable request because I take tea weak? The younger assistant handed me my lidded water with teabag on it with no drama. Very odd situation, doesn't take a PHD in common sense to work out I just didn't want the teabag stewing in the cup.Tea was tea, traybakes were average, prices was high for what we bought. Julia's might be a case of The Emperors New Clothes in Stromness as the have the market being situated directly opposite the harbour and surrounded by ample free parking. Wouldn't return.

It saddens me to have to give a lower review than I have in the past for Julia’s as this has always been a must visit for us when we are in Stromness. We stopped here for lunch before our scheduled booking for Skara Brae, so didn’t have much time. I was very disappointed with my visit and was surprised to find the main restaurant closed, with the only seats available outside under a marquee with picnic benches. Fortunately it was fine weather (quite rare in Orkney) so we took a seat for lunch. The menu was extremely limited with only a couple of hot options, a soup and some takeaway rolls already prepared and on the shelf. The soup was served in very small takeaway cups, as were the hot drinks which is not adequate portion size for the price. We didn’t really have time to go elsewhere, so we ordered two rolls, a burger and a can of coke which came to just short of £20 - pretty expensive for eating out of paper bags with napkins. I don’t understand why Julia’s was operating in this way given that Orkney is in Level Zero, yet still charged as much, if not more for a very simple lunch. It’s a real shame for the local and loyal visiting customers - I think you could do a lot better Julia’s.

Just off the ferry and a bit of time to kill prior to bus to Kirkwall so wandered across the road to the cafe. The main Bistro was closed but Julia's She'd was open so we helped ourselves to some hot soup of the day and a couple of traybakes. Have to say the warm soup helped keep the chill away sitting on the picnic benches outside. The traybrakes had to wait until we got to the hotel though as the bus arrived. The tray bites were delicious and I would recommend a visit if you are waiting for a bus or the ferry back to the mainland.

We visited in the hope of a hot drink and some food after visiting wonderful Neolithic sites in the icy wind. The cafe was highly recommended by the guides at our last stop. But when we sat down, over an hour before closing time, a waitress told us that the cafe was closing, and there was no food available. So we made to leave, and asked if there was anywhere else in Stromness to have a cup of tea.She and another waitress said we could get a tea to drink outside! When we said it was really cold outside, and we just wanted a hot drink and something to eat, they relented and said, 'well, if it's just a cup of tea, that would be fine'. After that we were served by someone else, and had a perfectly normal cup of tea and cake. Whilst we sat there other visitors came in, and were served quite normally. We don't know why we were being hustled out of the cafe, but it was an odd, and unpleasant experience. So unlike the rest of Orkney!

This place closes at 5.00, so lunch is the big rush for them and it gets very busy - perhaps not all of the time, but certainly when we were there. There were no tables free, so we had to wait about 10 minutes till someone left; a couple of tables were reserved, so it appears the best idea would be to book in advance to make sure you can get a meal, as there really aren't very many places to eat in Stromness. My one suggestion to them is that they have some sort of system for seating people in order of arrival, as that element was chaos when we were there. No one of the staff was within sight when I arrived. We had to ask people when/if they were leaving and finally found someone who was. While we were eating, others were coming in constantly and in one case were greeted and told it would be a 10 minute wait, then another couple arrived and started looking for a table for themselves as there was no one to greet them, but the first couple hadn't yet been given a table. At busy times, it would make more sense to have someone to greet and take names, not run off and start serving and leave people to fend for themselves or have others come in and queue jump. Sorry about the complaint, as the food really was lovely, interesting menu choices, very friendly and accommodating staff. Shame they aren't open for dinner! Perhaps they could expand both hours and seating, as it seems they could easily fill a larger area.

The place was extremely busy and we had to wait for a table. Despite how busy there were, staff were still smiling and friendly. The coffees were OK, as was the Garlic Chicken burger. This was almost fast food style of food – we were disappointed that the chicken in the burger was reconstituted chicken like you get in nuggets. We were expecting ‘real’ chicken. The Hawaiian Melt was tasty.

We visited this lovely cafe having just disembarked from the Northlink Ferry, it is so handy just over the road from the ferry terminal. A very warm welcome and a good menu to suit all tastes plus they have scrumptious baking, all very reasonably priced..Quick service from cheery staff. Enjoy!

As already mentioned, there aren't that many places to eat in Stromness so the cafe can be busy even in April. Saying that, Julia's is a bright, friendly place with a fair sized menu.

We stopped here for welcome tea and cakes on a very wet, cold and blustery day. Glad to see they had a gluten-free crunchy cookie. Clean, friendly enough and nice artwork on the walls but decor felt a little bland.

Been here a couple of times and it’s a really good place for lunch with a good variety to choose from and not expensive. The service is warm and friendly and the food is very good. If you just fancy a warm drink and a slice of cake it’s perfect for this too.

et c'est très malin que de servir durant l'après midi, tant que les clients potentiels ne sont pas dans la file pour prendre le ferry. Ce que nous y avons mangé était très bon et très frais.

Visited this café after getting bus from Kirkwall to stromness. It is a pleasant cafe to eat in, good size portions can recommend the omelettes although there was so much salad struggled to finish having said that just my personal opinion. It was a busy lunchtime and we had to wait quite a while for our lunch but staff are very pleasant. All in all this café was probably the highlight of our visit as there was very little else to do in stromness

Cake lovely, sandwiches nice but pricey not worth what you have to pay. Shame because we would have eaten there more. Maybe fresh crusty bread for sandwiches instead of thin plain sliced bread ?

Busy kitchen on the night, by all accounts. No draught beers due to 'maintenance'? The food that myself and my partner had was fantastically underwhelming...sadly, we wanted a treat as it was our last night away. Steak and ale pie with 'seasonal vegetables', small amount of mash with handful of frozen peas/green beans. Maybe seasonal in Iceland, the shop!... Mac and cheese, surely you can't go wrong? Sadly, yes you can. Stodgy, overcooked pasta, unable to pick up a full piece and very little taste of cheese. Come on! #Serve proper veg, it's cheap. #Take less bookings if Chef is under too much pressure. #Give customers a better experience. # Quality and profit can be achieved, with a bit of thought. I'd say eat elsewhere until standards improve. A fish and chip shop would pay more attention to detail. Barman was very pleasan.

Simon is the person who served us each day this week. Very dry sense of humour & not a man to be rushed! The coffee and teas are good. Small selection of eats - a fab coconut and chocolate cake and hot pies. Only 4-5 small tables available ( and takeaway). Only seems to be open around 9am or 9.30am, not 8am as advertised. Good old fashioned easy listening music.

The website says open 10-5. This is only the gift shop not the brewery. Brewery tour times change daily. Staff said they expect tourists will phone ahead to ask about daily tour times. None of this information is on their website. Drove 40 minutes from Kirkwall for nothing
