I love the Dolphin. Everyone there is so keen to look after you as well as they possibly can. Thank you!

It was very quiet in the pub when we arrived at 11pm after a night out in town. That's why on this occasion I had to give a low score for atmosphere but I'm sure at other times it would have a good vibe. We only delayed for 2 drinks due to the time of night. The landlady was friendly, helpful and polite. We hadn't been in the pub for years and wish we'd gone back sooner. The function room was closed off last night but is well used and booked out for many Saturday nights. They also have live music on some Saturday nights. They offer deals and incentives. They run a welcome cafe one afternoon a week as a meeting point for the local community. There are 2 pool tables and a dart board. They run teams for both sports. They have sport showing on 2 screens for a number of channels. The pub is having a full refurbishment in the near future but was still in good condition. We will certainly return.

How can you explain the fact that you started banging on the door of my room so that I would open it, after I opened it you immediately started yelling and accusing me of smoking? .After I came to my colleagues’ room, who were lying quietly resting and not smoking anything, they were also puzzled that you had “bothered” them like that. Then I decided to come down to you to find out in more detail why you were thinking about us, so I invited you into the room to check whether we smoked or not, for some reason you thought that I blamed the other rooms. You say that there was no one but us, but in the morning I saw a man who was leaving the hotel with a suitcase. I advise you next time to calmly find out what’s wrong, and not start with shouting.

Very disappointing Afternoon Tea, stale bread for sandwiches which must of been made hours before we arrived, inedible sausage rolls which were very cold (straight from the fridge). I did complain and we were given replacement sandwiches - lettuce and very fatty gammon ham. Not worth the £40 paid so would definitely not recommend.

The food was quite honestly the best I have had in a Gastro-type pub for many years. Prices we reasonable, however given the quality of the food in retrospect it was excellent value. Our server, Emily, was an absolute delight to deal with. Emily was extremely attentive, clear, and articulate, warm and humorous. We started with: White bait and squid Scotch eggs (not your usual scotch egg, amazingly tasty) Our mains: Fishcakes Steak – ordered medium – delivered the perfect medium. We went Monday night, which was nice and quiet, not empty though, still a great atmos. Highly recommended.

Sunday lunch. Sadly they’d run out of Pork, one of the trio of meats and the only one that I would have chosen if the others were unavailable. So we had the beef which was lovely. The roasties could have done with another twenty minutes to crisp up a bit but they were lovely and fluffy inside, well cooked. The veg was lovely but oh dear, the gravy had a very sticky consistency and the Yorkshire puddings were almost inedible due to being almost impossible to cut, rubbery is the best I can describe them as. We had a late lunch but still a couple of hours before the end of service so no real excuse for running out of Pork and rubbery Yorkshires. The pub was lovely and clean, including the WCs, the staff were lovely and very helpful. Beer was reasonably priced and well kept, sadly the cost of wine was almost as much for a glass as the cost of dinner. One of the better Sunday lunches in and around Newbury and reasonable value. We will go again and hope that next time it warrants 5 stars!
