Jordan J was really good, helpful and kept up with our orders brilliantly

I’ve been here twice now, the first time food was good but many things on the menu were unavailable. Having pre-booked today, we turned up for our booking to an empty restaurant and were told we could sit anywhere. We sat in the window to overlook canal and my husband asked if it would be possible to turn down the loud music as we were the only ones there, he was told that she could turn down a bit but we noticed no difference. We then began to order our food and again many items on the menu were unavailable. The final straw for us was being told we couldn’t sit where we had chosen because we had our dog with us. As we were the only people in the restaurant I don’t see why this made a difference. We decided to leave and find somewhere more accommodating to have our lunch. Really disappointed - we will not be returning.

We had a lovely experience at Slug and Lettuce during our brunch, and a big part of that was thanks to Cassie. She was incredibly welcoming, supportive, and friendly throughout our visit. From the moment we arrived, she made sure we were comfortable and well looked after. Her cheerful attitude and attention to detail didn’t go unnoticed, and she truly enhanced our time there. Thank you, Cassie, for making our brunch so enjoyable! Highly recommend her service to anyone visiting.

Popped in today for a quick lunch had a lovely fish finger bap with fries stunning bar - lovely service - will defo return 👍

We had a bottomless brunch here before Christmas whilst we did enjoy it mostly, the service was slow and we did wait a while between drinks, had to flag down our our waiter a couple of times, he was new so feel just a little more training was necessary. He was extremely friendly, pleasant and helpful though, which is more than I can say for the other staff we encountered after he finished his shift. It was also quite cold as the entrance door kept getting left open, we had to get up and shut it ourselves a couple of times. We paid a deposit to book (which I’m presuming most people do), this was not refunded or taken off our bill at the end (I didn’t notice at the time), so I had to message them after I got home. This was our second time here and both times were disappointing and of a similar experience, we thought we were just unlucky the first time so gave them another go

Nine of us all family ate here today. Not one of us finished our food as very poor. Starter came out 5 minutes after the first 3 meals. Chicken skewers was 3 very chewy small bits of chicken with no peri peri ! Katsu chicken curry x3 ? One had no sauce. Mac and cheese like rubber. Garlic bread rock hard. Chips cold. After asking for napkins for 9 we we’re given 3 ? Nachos was a big bowl of crisps / chips but very very little topping that was tasteless. Worst food I’ve had for as long as I can remember in a pub. Very disappointed. 3/10.

7:30 Friday night I met up with work people for a meal and drink. We were in the corridor near the entrance. The cold wind blew in every time somebody entered and the door didn't automatically shut meaning somebody from our party had to get up and shut it. It was freezing cold. Most of us kept coats on. The food didn't arrive until an hour after ordering. They said they were really busy. The place was only around half full. I suspect they were mostly busy with the food delivery service with the constant stream of couriers that kept coming in to pick up orders. (And leaving the door open.) The food itself was probably the best I've had in Newbury. Hot, tasty and original. The stuffed fried bao buns were great, Tater Tots covered in hot sauce were lovely, shredded chicken in a sweet and sour sauce were good but needed more sauce, and the sweet potato fries were a decent portion. My friends all talked about how good the food was. That was a lie. We pointed at our food and shouted "good!" at the top of our voices. That was met with a response of "Yes! Good!" from the other person. That was the extent of the conversation because the worst issue with the S&L was the volume of the music. It was so loud the speakers could barely cope so that the sound kept distorting and going 'tinny'. The lock on a toilet stall was broken. Not a big thing in itself. The lock was also broken on my last visit 3 or 4 months previously. It does give the impression that the place is left left to get on with it without much of an attempt to improve or maintain standards. Manager should hear the lock is broken and fix the lock. The manager should realise the entrance way is freezing and make sure the door closes, install an extra door or put a heater in. I'd suggest the also need to decide whether they are a restaurant or a nightclub because you just can't be both. I'm giving it 1 star. Fix the front door and it's 2 stars. Concentrate on giving customers eating there their food and it's 3 stars. Lower the volume during food service time so people can have a conversation and it's 5 stars.

There were 3 of us went for evening meal on 30th October. The staff behind the bar was very welcoming and made us feel so relaxed. When the food arrive (again very friendly staff) it was excellent and enjoyed it very much! We will be coming back. Well done to the friendly staff.

Whilst the staff were great for the afternoon tea with cocktails not much else was. The sandwiches and scones were stale, the puddings over sweet and not nice. The strawberry shot was just cream because they had no strawberries! Even the cocktails weren't great, full of over sweet cordials and sweets,. Clearly a new menu that's awful. Definitely wouldn't go back or recommend.

Abbey was working behind the bar on the 5th October we were a large party of 40 , she made us all fantastic cocktails and was really helpful and polite .

Don't get the bottomless brunch

Great venue in great condition very clean and the toilets were spotless and smelt very fresh. We ordered food which was very well prepared and high quality. Prices are very good. The customer service was excellent and friendly. Highly recommend this place.

Terrible place to eat. Ordered the chicken and bacon sandwich. It came out and the chicken was raw. Do not recommend to eat here.

The location was wonderful right on the canal and we set literally on top of the water. The combo dinner deal we had was really great and prompt. There were two individuals that stood out: Catherine and Kayne were such helpful hosts and their service was impeccable. We didn’t have to wait for anything and they were attentive and super polite. Just lovely all around their attentiveness was. Yay!😁.

Arrived with 8 people and Catherine quickly arrived a table by window do the children could see the river with the ducks & swans swimming up and down. Food came out quickly and had no problems with the order as made various changes from the original menu.

Catherine & Annie were fabulous. 10/10 on service and friendliness. Great atmosphere, and interior decor. Only thing I can say is don't have the battered fish. More batter than fish. Worst fish and chips I have had in a long time. Other than that everything else was splendid

We have lunch at Slug & Lettuce today. The venue is beautiful next to the river, the lunch deal is really worth it! Rosanna did an amazing job with the burgers, they disappeared super fast! Jess did a great job and accommodated to all our requests. Big thank you to the team for a great lunch.

Lovely environment sat outside by the river enjoyed watching the swans and ducks whilst enjoying a lovely lunch. I am in a wheelchair so being able to access this was great didn't use the facilities so can not comment but was able to get around easily and get outside easily. We found it tricky to access the Gluten free menu as it required you to download the app and put in card details which we did not not want to do we did find eventually find it on the website. Food was well cooked, presented well and taste delicious. Staff were pleasant, helpful and friendly. Thank you Jess and our chef Rosanna would defo recommend.
