Coffee#1 Newbury in West Berkshire

I didn't eat any food, but it's a regular visit when we go to Newbury. Service is good, great place. Don't know what's happened to the upstairs part?

Great service and staff are amazing, v welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend. Only problem is the customer WFi, often unreliable and weak : (

Amazing experience today. My baby spilled my coffee all over the floor making a huge mess… it was completely my fault. Yet I was offered a replacement coffee for free. So impressed.

Slow service with loads of staff. Coffee a bit like gravy. I like strong coffee but not this stuff. Cake selection poor and unappetising.

Misleading advertising, the Frappes are nothing like the picture and are basically just a thin milkshakes with a squirt of artificial flavouring, no straws were available when we went (you are a drinks shop?)

First visit and love the place, especially the comfy sofa! Only had coffee but will certainly visit again. Could clear dirty dishes away but maybe not enough staff

Last Sunday 24/3/24 ordered 2 vegan wraps as take away . Waited long . Got my order and payed £10 . While having it , on my first bits, I realised it has meat inside . I am allergic to meat and strictly vegetarian. I was panicked. I found that they packed 2 all day wraps for me and it contained bacon , sausage, egg . Never got this worst feeling ever . How much carelessness can cause this kind of service we must think . Worst cafe in Newbury !

I like the coffee here, and the service is fairly quick. Friendly staff, family friendly with colouring pictures and crayons for the kids. Prams, dogs etc are welcomed too.

Enjoyed the speciality hot chocolate. Great looking cakes and pastries. Very busy on Sunday but quiet on Friday afternoon.

My 1st visit, I will definitely be visiting again. The coffee was good, the food that I had was good and the service was good.

Super friendly staff, very welcoming having never been to Hungerford before there local knowledge is brilliant as well. Would highly recommend a visit to them fresh cake pastries as well.

Terrible service. Slow. 30 minutes to get the drinks! 1 person serving out of 3. I suggested to the server that they might want to serve customers rather than put out the cakes on display as the queue was to the door. Apparently the cakes are more important than the customer. I was asked if I wanted Caramel sauce on my caramel macchiato! Tables not cleared. Really disappointed.

Other than the usual, which is the bog standard for any business these days, need more staff for the volume of customers. BUT!!! They have some unusual and unique flavoured coffees like peanut butter. Yum! It's definitely worth a try.

Nice cosy place to have coffee. Comfortable seating. I ate a cranberry and cheese Panini which was nice. Fairly expensive but the same as everywhere now. A member of staff locked the toilet before closing and was irritated when I asked to use it. Spoiled the visit for me.

Coffee is always great here, Staff on this visit seemed a bit rushed due to lunchtime on a Saturday, however they are usually very good. I usually go to the Hungerford Shop as this Shop is a bit narrow & cramped, there is not a lot of room for families with buggies as there are too many tables in my opinion.

I far prefer the coffee at Coffee Costa but I enjoy the pastries here, in particular their pastel del nata and almond croissant. Also their layout is cool, the staff welcoming and good loo facilities. Their outdoor seating is also heaven for people watching on warmer, dry days!

Staff are nice but tech is awful. What coffee shop these days doesn’t have a healthy supply of plugs? But that’s not my main complaint. Since 2022, this location has not had any wifi. Apparently the staff have complained to management but they ‘just don’t give a damn’. Wake up! It’s 2024!!!

I called in on a busy Saturday and the line was to the door. I decided to stick it out and found the staff to be very efficient in taking and delivering orders. My coffee and pastry were above average. Overall: a good branch of this generally good chain.

My partner and I went in for a coffee today. We ordered a gingerbread latte and an oat milk vanilla latte with a cake each. The guy serving us was very helpful however after clearly stating what we wanted and repeating ourselves we received the wrong coffees. When my partner went to collect our order one of the waitresses told us that “oat milk cost 40p more but it’s ok because there’s a chunk missing out of your cake” Despite us clearly going over the order twice. Terrible customer service.

We had the mushroom and emmental toasties, victoria sponge slice and the carrot cake - would recommend all of these - delicious! Decor was lovely too (love the fireplace at the back!) Would lunch here again

The coffee#1 is very nice inside or outside have your drink & you can takeaway. Nice to have one Newbury & Wokingham. But not Reading. The staff are nice & friendly & happy to help you. It's also wheelchair friendly.

Wonderful coffee shop with delicious cakes too at competitive prices. We also enjoyed the old world atmosphere too with some antique style chairs! Recommended for quiet relaxation & people watching!

Very busy cafe and in a good location. We had to clean our table ourselves, the staff does not have time to clean everything. Coffee is not bad, desserts are delicious. The staff were nice and friendly, they were happy to talk about drinks and help me make a choice.

The revamp is really nice, However they should have continued it to the toilets. Dirty, no soap, broken tiles and toilets that do not flush properly.

It was my first time I found it kinda confusing but I could see the appeal and it was a nice coffee. I'm willing to give it another go see if I feel better about it.

The place looks pleasant and the food etc well displayed. And that draws you in. Don’t bother. The service is at best indifferent, the staff devoid of manners and the ability to ignore you offensive. The hot drinks served in disposable cups and the food I will never return to try.

Long queue, poor staff, could only have a take out cup to drink in - if you get kids who are unsupervised to run your coffee shop you’ll let the standards plummet. Kids can’t be bothered to wash up - I would give the place a wide berth.

I've been here three times now and each visit has got worse. The ladies behind the till always look annoyed and snappy when you order from them. They are always busy so maybe it's an understaffed or stress issue but whatever it is it always gives me massive anxiety to the point that I'd rather not go in when there's so many other cafes to frequent. It's always quite loud in there too. Last time I went I ordered a large smoothie, went and sat down with it, then my friend came out with her large smoothie...which was in a larger glass than mine, the queue was so long and the ladies seemed annoyed already I didn't dare go back and question it. Overall not a comfortable experience for me and won't be returning.

Love going in here for the friendly staff and good coffee. However...I was shocked today to find out Rebecca did not make her probation. She was simply one of the best staff members there, and was one of the main reasons for my visits. She was always very polite,courteous,professional and an asset to the cafe. Why oh why have management got rid of an excellent member of staff?? It simply does not make sense.

Very pleasant place for coffee and catchup with friends! Highly recommend the cheese & tomato toasties - I think they are sundried tomatoes which makes a tasty difference. Worth asking for coffee to be "hot" as there is an adjustment they can make to the machine.

Weekday visit. A Thursday. Late morning. Two ladies serving. Short-staffed as tables full of unwashed cups and plates where people had been sitting ..but when trying to clear up...oh ..it was literally as if they were throwing ceramic mugs into a ceramic sink. Smash, crash, bang. All customers stopped drinking coffee, neither of the two ladies seemed to have any clue about the noise they were making. The couple nearest us were aghast with the noise and shook their heads bowing not to come again. No care or apparent knowledge re: noise or how heavy-handed they were. Awful experience and female manager there can be quite blunt. Not a nice experience. Won't be going back..shame as coffee was good.

My car in for service today, so had 2 trips to Coffee #1. First visit was for breakfast. Banana and cinnamon porridge, with little pot of honey on the side. Delicious. Washed down with pot of English breakfast tea. Tea is always good here with proper leaves in a pot. After passing time wandering around town, returned for a lovely vanilla latte and salted caramel slice. Coffee was lovely. Slice, thought it may be over sweet, but no, it was lovely balanced flavour. Staff are always very friendly. Atmosphere always feels relaxed. Definitely my favourite place to relax and spend time in Newbury.

Coffee #1 has excellent coffee and is worth visiting just for that. Sadly the food is all a bit mass produced. Stick to the coffee and you won't be disappointed.

Friendly staff, nice and clean now they have new managers and they are always happy to help.

Pleasant enough visit. With Coffee #1 you know what you're gonna get - they're a good chain and serve good quality coffee. This morning's Pain Aux Raisin was nice, but a bit too greasy/fatty. That said, I was kinda hungry so I did devour it.

I've been here a few times so it's probably only fair that I leave a review. It's been great seeing how much the vegan menu has expanded, and the wraps we had today were far more enjoyable than your average "vegan option at a coffee shop". Though it can get quite busy at times, there's almost always room to get a wheelchair through and the toilets are all clean, spacious, and well equipped. I would say, the smoothies are served with a paper straw by default, so if that's a problem, I would encourage you to bring your own straws from home, however this seems to be pretty common for most places now. Three years ago, I had one of the most important conversations of my life here, and I'm really glad to see that it's now an even more pleasant and welcoming place to spend time now than it was then, so that I can make some positive memories here to balance out the very "complicated" memory I have of that time. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a coffee in town.
