An excellent pub with fine beer - there is always a great selection. The open fire is a real treat as the days get colder.

Unfortunately an unsmiling, loud, swearing barmaid did not make this a welcoming place to visit. Will need some convincing to return. Pity as it has been a good pub in recent few years.

Excellent traditional style pub with a great selection of cask ales. Our host Louise had a vast knowledge of the ales on sale as well as the gins on offer. We visit Newbury often, so will always make a point of calling in here.

Consistently the best pub in Newbury for beer. Update. Been a while since I've been there, but glad I visited. Some very interesting beers, well looked after and the barman knew his stuff

I don’t really understand what happened there Saturday night. Pub said it was closing 1am on web hence why we made our way over there. The staff member behind the bar was having a bad day which happens and explained this to us at length so I can excuse the cold behaviour somewhat later. Anyway, when the last two people left the pub and I still had a third of beer left in my pint, this person started turning off the lights around us bearing in mind there was an hour left to close. Also they were tapping their fingers on the bar whilst holding the switches saying it was ‘dead’. Never seen this before but maybe they own the place and didn’t care about my future custom. Won’t be back maybe for the comedy.

Lovely old tavern, bit of querk and old map of Newbury across the ceiling. Bar wrapped on 3 sides, friendly staff and comfy seats.

A nice comfortable pub , nicely decorated. 3 seating areas. A nice range of ales. I cannot comment on the food. As it's not always available. The current staff are really good, friendly and knowledgeable. I've gone here for many years over its various transitions.

Popped in on a recent Saturday to find the pub almost empty. It wasn’t the warmest of greetings by the woman behind the bar either. Ordered a pint of bitter and was amazed to be charged £5.60. Now I know why it was almost empty on a Saturday evening. I want to support pubs which are gong through a tough time but I can't if they charge rip off prices and are unwelcoming.

Always visit The King Charles Tavern when in Newbury, for real ales. Always a good selection but unfortunately little dark choice.

Fantastic food and great service 👍

I was alone in my first visit, and during the second, a Chinese like girl was taking pictures and a couple talked about their day routine. Cousy, nice and a place with its own beer that I would visit again.

The historic place of washer women has been transformed into a modern pub. Nice ambience to chill out with, try to find the smoke zone is tricky.

Really nice pub and location in Newbury town centre. Always have good beers on, decent gin selection and the seating areas are really nice and cosy. For such a warm pub however, the staff from our recent experience leave you feeling cold. At a busy time we visited recently it felt like we were an inconvenience for making the place even busier going by the sighs from behind the bar. And then on our last visit, much quieter, we sat round the back only for the three female staff members to have a full on argument at full volume. Really hope those in charge read this and take on board the criticism as it only takes a smile, a welcome and arguments kept behind-closed-doors to make this really decent pub next level excellent. Hope to return.

Good beer selection, great atmosphere

Great as always, this place is a personal favourite whenever I am in Newbury. Relaxed vibe and mostly 30+.

We went for a family meal the other week and the waitress overheard that it was someone's birthday in our group and brought out a dessert with a candle in it without even being asked!! The food was lovely and all homemade. The beers and wines are really nice and the staff are so friendly. A great pub for eating and/or drinking - my fave in Newbury.

A friendly pub, with 7 pumps of cask ale, which change frequently. It is situated very close to the railway station, so always a good shout for a final one before train.

Always pop into The King Charles Tavern when in Newbury. We like the atmosphere, it's a proper pub, serving real ales though could do with more dark choices. Great 50s map on the ceiling.

I’ve been a big fan of the KC over the years and popped in for a quick drink on Sunday evening. Half the taps were off and there were a small group of customers who appeared to be friends with the young staff. I sat down to have my drink as the group laughed and joked about feeling ill as one of the group was coughing and spluttering everywhere. I felt very uncomfortable and got up to leave with half my drink remaining. The staff joked that I was leaving because of their conversation. Grim experience and one I won’t be rushing back for.

Went for a tasting evening and had the most amazing food. We had, luckily, eaten at The Ritz in London the day before and although not as refined for obvious reasons it was still a culinary masterpiece by the chef Sam and his team. We had the wine pairing and it was definitely worth the extra. Well explained dishes and wine would highly recommend any one of their special evenings. I think a Spanish Tapas night is next on the agenda there and we will be booking as soon as details are available. Thank you

We visited the KC tonight as we were in the area and read about the new menu. After a warm welcome from new manager Immy, we selected starters and main courses. The menu stated homemade and rustic food to which we were not disappointed. Delicious Steak & Guiness Pie, Gammon Steak and a Lentil Dahl. All served with a friendly smile and nothing too much trouble. We enjoyed our evening so much we’ve booked for an upcoming ‘pop up’ by sister restaurant The Great Shefford chef Sam Cary. Thank you toImmy and your team for a lovely evening.

Well I have to say the best pub in newbury. Ruth, jess and Martin are amazing bar staff always looking after you and always on the ball Nothing is to much trouble for them very accomadating The banter and craic is good with locals ie wee Andy and Les .. I highly recommend this pub it's a home from home

Top Sunday lunch with tasty home cooked food. Big Yorkshire, good roasts, veg and nicely cooked beef. Pub has lovely decor and ambience with excellent cask beer selection, one of best in Newbury. Passion fruit pavlova was also great!

Gorgeous Tavern v near to Newbury train station. Grade 2 listed and just refurbished. 3 fireplaces with real fires and an amazing front of house lady called Grace. I had a wonderful lunch here and had the pumpkin and aubergine lasagne served with tender stalk broccoli and 3 beautifully cooked roast potatoes. Absolutely delicious and a just enough. So tasty and a lovely ambience. This is a must go to place for good food and lovely place to be. Highly recommended

Very VERY Nice, but get Fosters,

Very odd visit. The pub was pretty empty on an early Saturday evening which seemed a bit strange as everywhere else we’d been was busy. Stood at the bar for around 10 minutes while a couple of children faffed around serving one person and playing with their phones without acknowledging us. Gave up in the end and went somewhere else where they were happy for us to spend some money……may have been an off night but there was clearly nobody there who had any interest in the business.

It's been 5 years and lockdown since my last visit. Still a nice local pub but not so much ale choice as before.

Had two roast from the King Charles Tavern recently and they were tasty, cooked really well, presented and served by professional staff. Excellent atmosphere especially under such difficult circumstances.

As always with the KCT you can’t go far wrong when it comes to their real ale customer service and vibrant atmosphere. They make the best of what I can with the 10 o’clock curfew And as always I look forward to going back in the future.

A decent little pub between the train station and the market place. We don't mind an afternoon drink when we remember it's there, the one negative in mind is that it doesn't have much seating in the bar and we usually end up standing.

A town pub with parking close by. Nice cosy place with a friendly welcome for strangers. Enough music to give atmosphere but quiet enough to chat without needing to shout! Comfortable, clean, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Had Sunday lunch here as a group. Was a bit disappointed in that everything was over cooked. We were there and ordering by 12:30 so it's not like it was at the end of service. Both the beef and the lamb had been cooked to brown all the way through. The broccoli was a bit soggy and the peas were like shot. Not sure why you got a Yorkshire pudding with lamb, but this was fine, nice and light, the meat itself was great, just ruined by the cooking. Gravy was a bit thin and oily. Given the price and the portion size there is better value to be had else where, demonstrated by the fact the place was half empty. Service was great, beer and wine was fine.

Ever since it was refurbished a few years ago, the KC has been a great town centre pub/bar. Frequently hosting a different range of ales, it is a cosy place to enjoy good beer in a relaxing atmosphere. I haven't eaten here for a number of years, so can't comment, but I enjoy going here for a nice pint of beer with a historical map of Newbury on the ceiling to peruse.

Beer good and well kept if somewhat expensive compared others locally

Don't be put off by the Greene King signage - there is a good range of ales on offer, mostly from smaller breweries. A few minutes walk from the railway station, the pub has been tastefully modernised inside, but retaining two separate bars. Food is a fairly straightforward affair, decent pub grub rather than somewhere you would go for that special meal. Prices are about average, with a main meal setting you back around the £low-teens. I opted for the Aberdeen Angus Burger (£12.95) and a very good burger it was, but annoyingly served on a piece of slate, with the eight chips in a mini replica deep fat fryer. Needless to say, bits kept dropping off the edge whilst eating. Regular readers of my reviews will know one of my pet bug bears is pubs serving food on anything other than a china plate. Other than that, this is a decent town centre pub, albeit some way short of being anything really special.

This is by far the best pub in Newbury town centre for real ale. During my stay in Newbury the King Charles Tavern had eight ales on tap which included their own King Charles Ale, Yardbird Pale Ale (Greene King) & Ferryman’s Bitter (Loddon Brewery). My favourites were Loddon and Yardbird. They also serve the best pint of “Good Old Boy” (West Berkshire Brewery) in Newbury. An interesting feature in this place is an old map of Newbury which is printed on the pubs ceiling.

Must say that this pub deserves million stars . Loved the beautiful atmosphere with great staff who attended us . The landlord and lady took personal care for making our visit memorable . The food was scrumptious and can't fault with anything . And must mention the cleanliness of the place ! It was spotless! Will visit again .

Relaxed pub with good beer and inventive cocktails menu in relaxed and mixed aged venue. Close to the town centre and the railway station the perfect bolt hole.

Booked a table for 9 for our works Christmas do. They served us a 3 course meal that was excellent. The service was brilliant, they couldn't do enough for us. Thank you Kealey and crew.
