Absolutely relaxing, friendly, comfortable and the food was great.

Superb from checking in to checking out. Room excellent, bed extremely comfy and a shower to die for. There was even a complimentary sloe gin for guests. Breakfast was excellent, from cereals to juice, continental to full English, best poached egg I have had for ages. Also had an evening meal. Lovely food and if its on the menu try the scotch egg for the starter, absolutely amazing.

Took my girlfriend for her birthday last night and I couldn’t fault them. Such great service, was very refreshing to go into a pub and have been treated so well. The food was amazing and the staff. Specially our waiter thank you for a lovely evening.

First visit. Super new decor in what looked like reclaimed oak and pine. Very light and airy. Excellent front of house with good wine knowledge. Hos siggestions were spot on. I had really tasty river trout, and my wife had scallops with asparagus and watercress salad. Delicious. Plenty of car parking, and easy location at North end of Newbury. Gone to our No 1 local spot!

Fantastic room in the lodge, called The Fox, never seen a prettier more well equipped room. Extreme attention to detail. Everything you need, plus more, posh filter coffee, pish tea bags, beautiful shower room. Fabulously comfortable bed and bedding. Beautifully colour matched with a country feel, decorated to an extremely high standard. Perfect. Food in the restaurant was very high quality and service was superb. Breakfast was a beautifully thought out menu catering for all and cooked perfectly. Staff were extremely attentive and went the extra mile. Ps live the fresh milk service idea and lemon served in pretty netting with the fish and chips!

After several months of being really disappointed with food and service at this place, we decided to give it another chance. Well I actually think it's got worse. You wait 15 mins to be seated, you ask for water but there are no glasses, you get the wrong dinner delivered, the other dinner was cold. Never ever again, so disappointed and they weren't even busy.

I have been here a few times for birthday occasions, the food has always been good and the portions too. We went for dinner as a family, expecting an amazing experience. The staff seemed understaffed for a busy Friday night. We had two burgers and two Rissottos, the portions size were a joke. The risotto size was like a starter and the burger was alright but not for the price we paid. (£18) If you went for the set lunch menu then this is the place for you, if you want a classy evening don't bother... You will go away feeling robbed and you will need to eat again.

I had a great experience while visiting, everything was of a very high standard and the staff couldn't do more to help. I will definitely be returning.

My first trip and it was pretty good.

What an absolute delight. We've been working away from home all week, and on route home chose to 'drop in' for a meal on route home. From first walking through the doors to eventual departure, we were treated to some of the best service I've received and 2 exceptional plates of food. A fabulous menu, cooked to perfection and plated/presented like any of the very top resteraunts. Thank you. A truly delight 😊

Stayed for one night after a family recommendation, what a fab find. The pub/hotel has great character, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food both for dinner and breakfast was excellent. We will certainly be back, probably brining friends as well 😊😊

Had a lovely birthday dinner here last weekend. The food was delicious with an excellent range on the menu. The service was top notch. Our waitress was outstanding and the manager dealt with a question about a birthday email offer with absolute above and beyond customer service. My in-laws live locally, within walking distance, and this was their first time dining here. Absolutely recommend and will definitely be back. Thank you so much!

Spent a couple of nights here over the bank holiday - our room was great and the bed was very comfy and large! They’ve done a great job of the interiors in the pub and the rooms. Everything was super clean and tidy. All the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive all weekend. Little touches like blankets to sit outside and log fires in the garden really made a difference. We ended up eating here both nights for ease and can’t fault it, especially the BBQ! Really good value for money for rooms and breakfast included and easy to access surrounding villages for a break from London. Would absolutely stay again!

My partner and I came here for Sunday lunch. We had great expectations as the pub/restaurant looked very nice and well presented. The service was ok too but we left very disappointed as the food was below average. The starters had been over cooked and greasy. The main we both decided to go for the lamb and it must have been the worst bit of lamb we have had. Not too mention the veg tasted like it had been sitting out for a while which was surprising as we was the first customers in that Sunday to sit for lunch. Very expensive too for what you get. £7 a beer £5 for water and £20 for a very poor roast. We felt very grieved for paying the bill and I wish we didn’t. Overall we won’t be returning. Shame. Mixed feelings. Beautiful interior, menus reads very well and very friendly bar man, he’d only been employed there six days. Now the food. We ordered from the brunch menu at 11:50. The pub was very quiet. It took 50 minutes, for 1 x scallops and 1 x eggs Benedict. I had to ask a girl on the bar after it had been 40 minutes, to be told, yes I’ve just asked chef and it’s coming now. Turns up 10 minutes later. Needs better communication with guests, rather than guests chasing where the food is and then taking even longer. Seemed to be lacking management, didn’t appear to be a manager on duty. Bill came, missing a coffee. Has a lot of potential. Would like to return, as the rooms look beautiful.

Service was shocking, food very average. This place has definitely gone downhill to the point I won't be returning. Took ages to get an initial drink after being seated (20 mins) and no further contact from staff thoughout meal (except when meals were bought out). Didn't get asked about additional drinks/how was the food etc and then they sting you with a £25 service charge.

An unearthed gem! We stayed here when attending Newbury races, it looked as though it had recently been refurbished, the room was stunning with quality furniture and linen, the pub was just as beautiful, a full range of drinks a good menu and the staff were very polite, professional and attentive, all in all a very pleasant stay and will be returning.

We had a Mother’s Day lunch here, the food and service were exceptional, great atmosphere and busy, my only minor grievance I felt it was a bit over priced but I guess that’s what you get when you book on these occasions, however that won’t stop us going back again

Mothers Day meal organised by my son and his fiancee for both Mums with Dad's included. Polite knowledgeable staff, clean premises, good atmosphere, wonderful food....congratulations to the Chef. Would definitely revisit.

Had lunch here today and it was delicious. The staff were really lovely and we never felt hurried. My vegan friend loved the menu as she often finds the vegan options in restaurants repetitive and boring but these weren’t ! The menu overall for all diners was interesting and our food was so tasty. I highly recommend and would return. The restaurant itself is beautiful and there is plenty of parking.

Lovely pub with tasty ale and excellent food menu. Had the Beef Rendang from the specials board, it was excellent.

We arrived for our booking and waited to be seated for minutes . No one acknowledged us. Our starter arrived half an hour later and still no drinks. We had to chase the waiter for these. Another very long wait for our mains. We both had Monk Fish Thermidor. It was over cooked, very dry and no sign of any sauce. We noticed a few meals being sent back. Requested the bill. The first time it was completely different to what we had. The second time we were charged for a bottle of wine instead of a glass. Eventually the correct bill arrived To their credit one of our meals was removed, without us asking. Such a disappointment and we won’t be returning.

Visited today to celebrate my birthday and left feeling disappointed, the restaurant was cold literally everyone kept their coats on. Starters came and were good, mains courses 3 out of 5 were either over cooked or cold, puddings were expensive, 3 miserable looking profiteroles on biscuits crumbs. Service was slow, we said at least twice we were on a timescale, had to chase desserts, had to chase the wine and water and then the coffee was only warm not hot. 2 main courses were taken off the bill but service was still added on. We won’t be back, shame as it’s a beautiful restaurant and bar area.

A family group (ages 5-70) of us arrived and the staff could not have been more welcoming. We were made to feel at home and nothing was too much trouble. A splendid afternoon during the Christmas break

Recommended by a friend but disappointing. Starters were nice enough but not particularly noteworthy. Mains were very nice although another tables food was initially brought to us. No follow up on either starter or main and had to chase to get a follow up drink order. Had to chase up on a bottle of wine ordered, which was billed incorrectly. Glasses not cleared and generally slow and inattentive. We’re not asking to be pampered or pestered but literally had to do all of the chasing to get orders. However, they weren’t shy in putting 12.5% service on. Overall the food, especially mains were nice and a lovely space. Service was the big disappointment of the night.

We booked a table for 6.45 today - welcome was all fine etc but our starters were messed up - my partner asked for bang bang cauliflower but to upgrade to prawns and I had scotch egg. The order came out wrong with my partner having normal cauliflower, not prawns, leaving me to have my starter on my own and him having his on his own. During our main, at no point did anyone come and check if we were ok nor if we needed anymore drinks. The moment we finished, then we were seen to, and as soon as we said no to any puddings (as service had been a let down thus far), a member of staff appeared with the card reader machine - making us feel less than welcome and hurried out of the restaurant. I had high hopes for the Hare and Hounds - but no, we won’t be returning anytime soon

We pre-booked for a table of 10 and were not served for an hour and a half. They were clearly understaffed but our table was completely neglected. After a couple of hours, I approached the manager on shift ‘Annabel’ and asked for an explanation. She instantly became defensive and aggressive as she was clearly stressed. I explained to her that I run a restaurant so i understand the pressure but the service was just abysmal. Food was below average at best. I contacted the manager after a visit and didnt hear back with an explanation or compensation. We travelled an hour and a half for this meal and it is the only chance our friends can meet every year, so we were all bitterly disappointed. Waste of money and time and we will not be back.

We are staying for dinner, bed and breakfast for 1 night. Beautiful, clean & cosy room. Very nice staff and dinner was wonderful. We brought our dog and she was made to feel very welcome. Would definitely book again.

Sadly this venue has lost its way. We are friends that meet regularly on most Fridays for years now. The reduction in staff and disturbing drop in food standards, portion size and quality are so sad.

Came here for a Sunday roast and all started well with a warm arrival and friendly front of house, unfortunately once the food arrived it started to go downhill. We all ordered a roast but were told the Yorkshire puddings were running a little behind and they would be sent out shortly. They never arrived! It was then disappointing to see everyone else being served theirs's but ours ignored. When we commented that these were still missing, no apology was given. We then tried our luck ordering dessert, but after a long wait we were finally told the item we all wanted was not actually available! This should have been mentioned when the menus were handed over. Shame we then had to pay the full amount on the bill with no discount offered for the missed items. Beautiful place but service really needs to improve when charging the higher prices!

Lovely place , very busy , service slow , had to wait a long time for mains , disappointed that the only fish on the menu other than battered fish and chips was sold out , we were not told this till after we had ordered . And being an early supper odd to run out so early . I was sat opposite kitchen and the extraction fans didn’t work too well and I was getting a lot of fat cooking smells and fumes making my eyes sting , quite unpleasant . The meals were nothing special, had to ask where our deserts were to be told we are very busy , also had to chase up coffees . So in all a disappointing experience . Won’t return .

There are better places to go for Afternoon Tea than here. For the money (£9 for one glass of Prosecco...) it wasn't really worth it. Slow service, forgot the pot of tea and the drink for my friends child but couldn't get anyone's attention from the table to had to get up and chase down someone. Pretty inattentive and the bill came out wrong as we had paid the necessary deposit when booking but this had not been taken off the bill, so watch out for that! Won't be going back - this was for my birthday and was a bit of a let down
