Very good takeaway coffee. On our way into the Penrith Museum we passed this coffee ‘van’. The Museum didn’t mind us taking our drinks in as we looked around. A perfect pick-me up on a wet morning!

I’m really hesitant to give this place 3 stars because I want to love it, and I understand what it’s like behind the scenes at a café. But after visiting four times—three of which were disappointing—I don’t think I’ll be returning. The service is very slow. While others around us were being served and receiving their food, we hadn’t even been acknowledged. Maybe it’s just bad luck, but we were polite and clearly ready to order, so I’m not sure why. Drinks also take a long time—staff always apologise (they are generally very friendly), but waiting 20 minutes for a drink is frustrating. The food itself tastes fine, no complaints there. However, on my last visit, I ordered a cake that was forgotten. After waiting in line at the till to get someone’s attention, I reminded them, and they mentioned it needed to be heated due to the caramel topping—no problem, but of course, it took even longer. When it finally arrived, the top was burnt (not just browned, but charred), and the cake itself was barely lukewarm. It tasted nice, but after a few bites, I noticed a hair in it. The staff apologised and didn’t charge me, which I appreciated, but it was still disappointing. It’s a shame because the café has a great atmosphere and is clearly popular, but the slow service, forgotten orders, and little mistakes—like a hair in my food—make it an unreliable spot for a quick coffee or lunch. I wish I could give my usual 5 stars, but unfortunately, I just can’t.

I went with my mum as a treat for us both. I knew she’d appreciate the menu and she did - and I did. We took my patterdale terrier who sat quietly watching us enjoy every course. The wine advice was spot on, even with a sample to taste before we selected. Mum had the cheese soufflé, lamb and hogget finished off with crème brûlée that was crisp on top and beautifully smooth underneath. I had scallops and black pudding - I’d not had either before and thoroughly enjoyed them, next it was the venison suet pudding - delicious but I wasn’t so sure about the beetroot done in duck fat - the duck fat was too much for me but that’s my choice. Finished with dark chocolate soufflé and sauce with cherry crème fraiche ice cream. £69 for 3 courses each was amazing value for such good food, service and ambience. This is a pub that has a Michelin star. It’s not fine dining, it’s a pub. But what a pub.

Home cooked food, always piping hot and fresh.if shopping in Penrith we always eat here and have never been disappointed, it’s not high end but good basic and tasty food. The staff will go out of their way to accommodate requests and substitute items if available.

Went in with wife I had chicken potato and tarragon pie with mash and veg, she had jacket potato and tuna mayo with salad. All excellent and including coffee cost £21. Polite staff, very clean.

*Booths*: £4.25, coffee 6/10 (no flat white option so too milky), roll 7/10 (good quality, no butter/only marg). Overall 7/10 *Cranstons*: £3.85, coffee 2/10 (just not good), roll 7/10 (Cumberland is best of all deals, very peppery/spiced, no butter/only marg, nice chutneys, bread roll a bit doughy) Overall 5/10 *Greggs*: £2.85, coffee 7/10 (actually decent, a bit highly caffeinated for me), roll 5/10 (decent at the price point, always bacon though as sausage are low quality, no butter/only marg) Overall 6/10 *Tim Hortons*: £3.50, coffee 3/10 (just go black coffee in which case 7/10, everything else far too milky), wrap 5/10 (tastes kind of nice at the time, but you know it’s crap - like crack) Overall 4/10 *Rheged*: £4.25, coffee 8.5/10 (no flat white option so too milky), roll 8.5/10 (good quality, butter, lovely crunchy roll, bacon or sausage as an option are fine and an extra quid for both) Overall 8.5/10

The food was amazing, can’t fault it. Service/staff was also good and attentive. One thing that’s letting the place down is the price of drinks & food. The food was great but I paid £9+ for a large glass of house red!!! We also paid £26 for a bottle of wine, which is standard but when you’re paying for an expensive meal you’d expect the wine to be poured as well for that price. We didn’t mind paying for the food expenses as it was delicious but some stuff on the menu was shockingly priced and couldn’t justify it, so left with out making most of the menu as the food was really good!
